Chinese fare with a Sichuan spin is the forte of this busy grill with a simple, green-walled design.
Perfect timing for us. A quick visit and meal with our daughter. Waitstaff was on point as we were looking for a quick turn to see a show. We got our P.Chang hot and numbing experience and made the show easily.
Excellent food and excellent service. Our waitress Jenny was outstanding.
Food - 5/5Service - 5/5Value - 4/5Atmosphere - 4/5One of the closest you can get to authentic Chinese food in Charlottesville. They have sichuan peppercorns, stone bowls, a wide variety of duck and pork dishes, actual Chinese customers; hallmarks of good Chinese food. This is not a cheap place to come to get 5 lbs of substandard food for $5, this is a place you come to sit down and enjoy and get fantastic food. We come again and again to explore the large menu!
Best Asian food in town. The bamboo fish is amazing. We had some old favs and tried some new things. Incredibly delicious. We are never disappointed.
Orange chicken was flavorless. Been disappointed twice by this place already that is supposedly top notch Chinese food.
Some good dishes some not as good alot of spicey dishes on the menu i love the spicey dishes but my girl does not so limited to what she can get.Dumplings were not the best
The food was ok, not great. And the ambiance was meh! Considering how expensive this place is, I was expecting to have a decent ambiance and great food.
Scallion bubble pancakes, wood ear mushrooms and seafood hot pot, oh my!
That’s not your long-Covid, the food is just boring. And the fried pork dumplings are actually just boiled then thrown in a frying pan for about 30 seconds, judging the coloring on only one side. And now my stomach hurts. Will not go back. Three stars is a little generous.
We have been coming here for years but the quality and cleanliness have taken a turn for the worse. Walls have mold along the baseboards and table was only partially wiped clean. We ordered a specific dish containing chicken and eggplant in a pot. Another chicken meal was presented wrapped in aluminum foil No pot, no plate. The waitress was beyond rude and insisted loudly that we did NOT order what we wanted. She stalked away and 10 minutes later ANOTHER person Delivered the correct meal. We will never return and advise everyone to do the same.
I purchased a take out order that cost $60 + tip for our family meal this evening. Upon our return home (30 minutes drive), we found that the $21 Kungpao shrimp and scallop meal only had 5 shrimp and 2 halves of a single scallop. I phoned and asked for the manager, but was informed they were not working. Fine. But then upon asking why it had so little ingredients I was told, “We increased the price of our food and cut down on the quantity”. Then the Peter Chang employee told me if I didn’t like it, to bring it back. He was very rude and we are so disappointed. We’ve been regular patrons at Peter Chang’s for seven years. No more.
Food was okay but not great! Overpriced! Definitely not what we expected!
The food was delicious! The menu expansive. When they say one chile of hotness, it is more than enough! Enjoyed it thoroughly!
The building is starting to show some wear. The food was OK. Service good. I got the table that rocked, that made my experience worse
Have been only twice one several years ago when it was packed and recently it was empty. Could not get a refill, food was overpriced for the quality and taste and yes there was a cockroach crawling up our table, should have took a picture of it but we just wanted to leave
My wife and I have been to almost every Peter Changs restaurant. This was our first visit at this location since we are here for our nephews graduation tomorrow at UVA.This is a very typical scenario... Service was good, atmosphere is ok, and food is slightly above average. Nothing to brag about but it is adequate for our taste.
Avoid. Simply avoid this restaurant to save your health and mood. I have visited this restaurant many times, but its getting worse and worse recently. About two weeks ago, we ordered beef with scrambled egg, which was seriously sour. We told the waitress (the elder ladyand she helped us void the dish on the bill before we left. This time we found steel wire in the food, which was after I paid with card. I told the waitress (a younger woman), who was dismissive and simply said "this was not my problem, have a good day", and left, with a contemptuous smile. No help on checking with the dish or express an apology (even for the sake of the restaurant).
We have visited 3 or 4 Peter Chang restaurants, and this location is just as good as the original in Williamsburg.
Great place! Great food!I think maybe indoor seating is a little understaffed, but the one server was doing a great job today around 1pm!
A restaurant has been overrated. Really disappointed.I ordered Sautéed diced chicken with Szechuan chili peppers and got clots of chicken without any flavor. The other dish is Beef tendon & tripe in Szechuan sauce, which is good but not always.
Had a fantastic lunch here, great food
Food itself was ok. The duck was very dry, the other dishes we had was ok.Service is meh... And on top of that, after we paid, I was asked by the waitress to leave more tips?! It was during lunchtime and she said you guys are a big party usually its 15% or 18% (we are a group of 5...)!
Ok noodle queen here. They arent a noodle place but they did have some dan dan noodles at a good price. The food is authentic szechuan and realllllly good. I recommend anything with the hot/numbing sauce on it. We got hot and numbing flounder with Tofu in clay pot, basil eggplant, fish rolls, and dan dans. All were excellent.
The food was mediocre. I was expecting it to be the same quality as the Richmond Peter Chang’s but food taste and quality were completely different. The Richmond location is easily 5 stars.
Bland general tso, how the hell that happens I don’t know. But I figured I would be disappointed after I called in an order and requested shrimp fried and they said they couldn’t accommodate that with the general tso order. I don’t believe Charlottesville has any good Asian restaurants around. This is the second restaurant to let me down.
Good service and decent food. Spring rolls were refrigerator cold. Egg drop soup was very good. Kung Pao was a bit too sweet. Beef with ginger and scallions was great!
As chefs we search out various cuisine when traveling for inspiration! Had Numbing Clay Pot dish that was very flavorful but not over the top heat and the vegetarian with tofu in a brown sauce that I requested they add "heat" was nicely warming.... everything was exceedingly flavorful, pretty presentation and the service was excellent. Classic chinese restaurant decor with a few whimsical touches and we were greeted warmly upon arrival. *read Peter Changs bio on wikipedia we did after dining there ...made for a fun addition to the experience. We will definitely return!
Peter Chang has always been great. As a customer, and a delivery partner through Uber Eats the staff has always been inviting, the food is great, as well as the service.
Dry hotpot was great. Others were very plain. A little disappointed. Normally there should be good Chinese/Asian restaurants around university campus in todays US. Probably here in Charlottesville, VA, there seemed not many Asian students.
Had the sesame chicken and fried steamed pork belly. Food did not taste good at all. Many pork belly pieces were completely gristle. Also the prices were very high, especially considering the low quality. Rice was also mediocre.
We have been coming here for over two years. Happy to say the seatings open! Do yourself a favor and get something authentic--the servers are usually great at making recommendations. If you can brave the spice, get the braised fish in szechuan sauce. Ive also really enjoyed the three pepper chicken and szechuan hot plate options. People can get turned off by the prices, but one dish can feed three easily. Bear this in mind a and bring some friends! We had Ander as our server this time and I was very pleased with the service. Professional, timely attentive--and thank God, my water was never empty. 10/10
Has gone downhill since the Pandemic. Wont disgust you with food pics. Hot and sour soup was flavorless and cold. The fish Stone pot was cold. The chicken and mushroom tasted sooo sour and off.
You wont find more authentic Sichuan anywhere else in Virginia other than another Peter Changs. The food is spicy, and well-seasoned. The staff is friendly, and helpful.
Terrible service! I was a server and bartender for years and the staff did everything wrong. They won’t tell you their kitchen is closing but will rudely push you out of the restaurant. They served the entrees first and when we got the egg drop soup it was cold. At one point a guy asked us if he can put chairs on our table as he was doing his closing work. Food was decent but not worth returning due to how poorly the staff were towards us.
Not a place to go during Covid. There are no apparent capacity restrictions during Covid. There is the possibility of ordering takeout and eating in a sitting area just outside the front door. That area is shown in the photo. Restaurant management emphasizes that there is no service in the waiting area and it didnt appear very inviting. Also, staff seemed very curt when asked about accomodating customers who are concerned about Covid exposure. Best to order takeout or go somewhere else to eat.
Ate there with wife. I got shrimp and scallop dish. Only had 2 small scallops. No ice tea. Hat and Sour soup had one bean.sprout, 1 small piece of mushroom. 1 small toufo. No sour to it no broth flavor St all... All an all not good
Peter Chang’s is the most delicious place in town! The food is fantastic, especially dry fried eggplant and the items from the specialties menu. Everything is a good value, and I can’t remember ever leaving without leftovers for the next day.
Delicious, my favorite dish is mapo tofu with ground beef added. My favorite Chinese restaurant in town. The negative reviews complain that its expensive. It isnt expensive, it just isnt cheap. Neither is the quality though. Great comfort food, especially for a cold day.
Chinese cuisine lovers beware....This was our first and last time eating at any Peter Changs. The food prices are much higher than other Chinese restaurants and the food quality is poor. I wish we had read the reviews before deciding to go here. The wonton soup was ok but nothing to brag about. Weve had much better. The Golden Mountain Chicken consist of shredded, breaded chicken pieces the size of a toothpick and smaller. The chicken was tough and dry like jerky. The beading is supposed to be crispy, however, it was doughy and mushy. Regardless of the menu description, there was no carrot in it anywhere and only four tiny pieces of spring onion (the green tops only). The mildly spicy sauce had no spice at all. A couple of bites had a strong chemical-like taste. We ate about a third of this dish before tossing it in the trash. We ended up sick a few hours later, lasting for about 12 hours.
My wife and I ordered dinner from here for the first time and it will be the last time. I ordered the Orange Chicken which was terrible if had frozen Orange Chicken in the bag that tasted better; the accompanying fried rice was just some white rice that they seemed to have poured a packet of soy sauce in. Extremely underwhelming is and understatement. The shrimp General Tsos shrimp has the same sauce as the orange chicken. Also it had a horrible after taste.
Always a great experience. Unmatched flavor and generous portions. Have never left without a bag of leftovers.Any of the reviews complaining about the price must equate a big mac to a prime rib.
Should have gotten both a 3 and a 5. Food quality was excellent. Golden mountain chicken is a lot. BBQ ribs fantastic.Other dishes also outstanding. The stone pot of seafood was disappointing. 3 small scallops, 5 medium shrimp and 3 very small pieces of fish was inadequate for the price. Taste was fine. The prices were just too high for what you get. Almost every selection is $20. Appetizers and soups $12 and up.Our takeout order for 4 people was over $150.Great quality but not worth the price. We are unlikely to return.
At first I didnt even know this place existed but because of Peter Changs name I decided to try it. We ordered the scallion balloon breads, crazy beef with ghost chili, mapo tofu, and beef tendon & tripe with szechuan sauce. They were all very flavorful and tasty. As you can tell I love to eat thing spicy and these guys made it really well. I wish we could have ate the balloon breeds right away but because of pandemic it has to be take out for everyones safety. But the taste was still good although shape changed later due to it being in container. Overall I recommend them =)
I think Peter Changs is a pretty decent Chinese restaurant - it is definitely in the traditional sense with some Americanization and of a better quality than other Chinese restaurants in the same vein/style. The food was tasty. The atmosphere of the place is pleasant, well-spaced, and very clean. Overall a good experience.
This is a fantastic restaurant. The prices are pretty decent and the portions are generous. We ordered a couple different things and everything was amazing. The food is more Homestyle Chinese, although I noticed theres not as many vegetarian dishes as a lot of authentic Chinese restaurants have. There are still many, its just a more American proportion of meat dishes.I would encourage you to order one of the specials instead of your normal American Chinese order, I did this and I found a new favorite dish.
Ill preface this by saying we have been coming here for years. Last two experiences have been extremely mediocre. We ordered General Tsos Chicken and their shrimp hot pot special. Both were overcooked and bland. Weve had better take-out food in town than we had last night. Considering their prices, we were extremely disappointed. We went at about 7:30PM and the staff seemed much more interested in preparing the kitchen and dining area so that they could leave early, than serving their customers.Wont be coming here for a while. Very sad, because we used to love this place.
Great authentic Chinese food. NOT the typical greasy, cheap, take out. Pork belly appetizer is pleasantly spiced. Bang bang shrimp is sweet and just a little zesty. The pork soup dumplings are worth the wait. And those are just the appetizers. Try the sweet and sour chicken here and you will never order it anywhere else!
Great place for fresh, authentic Chinese food. We get the stir fry hot pot (aka dry pot or ma la xiang guoevery time and have, more than once, gone multiple times a week.
Amazing variety of Chinese food. One style was Hot Numb I think it was called, which I enjoyed since I gravitate toward spicy Asian food. My partner doesnt like spicy, and she was happy with the non-spicy shrimp dish that she got. Good service, great food. I want to go back!
I always come here when I visit Charlottesville to eat the bamboo fish, which I havent been able to find at any other Chinese restaurant in any other city. The rest of the menu is great and fairly priced.
