Patna Museum is the state museum of the Indian state of Bihar. Started on 3 April 1917 during the British Raj to house the historical artefacts found in the vicinity of Patna,it is in the style of Mughal and Rajput architecture and is known locally as the Jadu Ghar. Most of the early collections have now been transferred to Bihar Museum. The Museum was constructed by the British to conserve and display the historical artifacts found in the vicinity of the state capital. The concept of having a museum arose in 1912, after Bihar and Bengal were separated. Patna Museum started functioning in 1915 from the commissioners bungalow, on the campus of A. N. Sinha Institute.Items on display in the multipurpose museum include archaeological objects, coins, art objects, paintings, instruments, textiles, paintings, thankas, bronze images and sculptures and terra cotta images by Hindu and Buddhist artists. It has a rare collection of British-period paintings depicting day-to-day life, as well as a fine collection related to the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad.

The museum is very good. The entry is ₹15. The most enchanting part of the museum is that it stores & displays in demand at ₹100 the Buddhas relics. That was really a spiritual experience. Most of the artefacts in the museum belong to 9th & 10th cent. There is one fossil of pine tree 58 long some 20 crore years old too. Some bring to the collection of Raja of Mungeyr & Raja of Betia etc. There is one gallery of modern art on Gandhi as well. The museum is worth a visit. It might take about an hour & half.

Disappointed to visit it.Patliputra was the centre of one of the most glorious and powerful kingdom of ancient India and birthplace of Mahavira and work land of Budha. The museum lacks to show all these. In painting gallery( at first floori found one mistakethey have mentioned malda painting style of Rajasthan but I guess it should be Malwa not malda Rajasthani school of paintings. One thing I want to mention please open the doors of terracotta and budha gallery.

Least informative museum I have seen in my life. The problem with the museum is that it is not a museum. It is rather a modern artwork collection with paintings as new as 2017.Also the real precious items like stone sculptures (from 6th Century ADare kept outside the building like they dont deserve to be inside. They are subject to rain and sun which might soon destroy them. There is no proper markings on the stone sculptures. They have written idol names on it with nailpolish perhaps. That too in poor handwriting.Half of the cases are empty. Most of the rooms are closed. Ancient Buddha and Vishnu idols are kept outside a public washroom in the central garden.Overall, very very disappointed.

A good museum altogether. But my advice is that you have to be sure of what you want when you are visiting this place. I visited this place last in 1995 and back then there was only one museum in Patna. With Bihar museum around, you have to have some interest in specifics displayed here to come and visit this place. I came here to see the Natural History part as it has a rare Fossil of a 200million old tree which is not something that you will find in a regular museum in India. I am a Fossil enthusiast and this place is therefore great for me. You have to have your pic. Nevertheless, a good Victorian architecture building to see and enjoy on a sunny day in Winter. Do visit once. :)

A truly remarkable place to visit in Patna. Established in the year 1917 this museum has artefacts on Lord Buddha, Ashoka Empire, Gupta Dynasty, Nalanda University and much more.Today it has lost its little bit of charm to Bihar Museum still both of them are equally great places to visit.Entry fare is Rs.15 per person and Rs 20 separately for photography.

One of the Pride of Patna..A good museum . A rare Fossil of very old tree is available here which is can not find in a regular museum in India. The Buddha casket is worth to visit. You can see some of the collection of ancient ornaments, places, animals, Palace etc.Lack of guide. Many places inside are not opened for public. Nothing is special here, only some instrument and rifle are available of second world war. Better to visit Bihar Museum in stead of Patna Museum.Rs. 15 per person visiting chargesRs. 5 to keep baggageRs. 20 for clicking photo.

The Buddha Relic casket is worth visiting. The natural history hall looks forelorn. The Metal hall and the Rahul Sankrityayan Hall are very well arranged and labelled. After the opening and shifting of exhibits to Bihar Museum, this one looks like a stepsister of the other one. The architecture however is still worth a visit.

During the British Raj when Bengal state was bifurcated into Bengal and Bihar, in 1917 , the Patna Museum , known as Jadu Ghar to the locals was established and later moved to the present site- a magnificent two storey building combining the Mughal and Rajasthan architectural styles . Set up in the center of the city, this splendid museum was created by Sir Edmund Gair, the Lt. Governor of Bihar and Odisha whose bust is exhibited near the entrance gate- and houses a large collection of vaeious types of exhibits ranging from the ancient times , to middle ages and the modern India. .The museum building consists of 2 large floors, each floor having well-organized galleries to exhibit the various attractions totaling more than 40,000 in number. It is best to spend a few minutes to watch the video at the entrance to know the specific locations of the galleries. The three most wel-lknown attractions which one should not miss are 1. The life size statue of the exquisitely expressive Yakshani - about 2300yeard old .2. the millon year old 53 foot fossilised tree .and 3. The Buddha relic casket , containing the ashes of lord Buddha found in asimple mud stupa in vaishali. This holy relic casket Is found in the Buddha relic gallery in the first floor, closed to normal visitors; one needs to buy a separate ticket for the Buddha relic gallery. The museum is open on all days except Mondays from 10-30 am to 4-30 pm.There is an entry fee, separate fee for the Buddha relic gallery .Locked lockers are available at the gate.A must-visit attraction for museum and history buffs.

Patna Museum, built in 1917 during the British Raj. There has been a wonderful use of Rajput and Mughal style in its architecture. Its windows are reminiscent of the palace of Rajasthan. The biggest attraction of this museum was the statue of Yakshini of Didarganj with Chander in her hand. One arm of the idol was fractured. So far it has been removed from here and sent to the new museum.Rahul Sakrantayan donated 10,000 handwritten Manusmritis to this museum which were written from the past gold and silver on hand made paperHere are some rare, ancient books on Buddhadarshan that were taken to Tibet seven hundred years ago and therefore survived the destruction of Nalanda UniversityThere are ancient rare coins, weapons, utensils, jewelery clothes. There are documents of the historical battle of Buxar. Here is a tableau of the lifestyle of the tribals and their contribution to the freedom struggle. There is much that makes this museum rich and worth visiting.Students of Patna Art College are often seen making still life sketches here. This museum is also known as "Jadugar". It will be enough to call an auto or rickshaw-wala simply as a magician to reach here.In its compound, there were earlier metal, life-size statues of some Englishmen, and walking around the museum you could see its architecture not only from the front, but from all sides. Now most of the part is covered and construction work is going on inside which is going to be covered with sackcloth after being made. Yes, the words of the officers will become separate and they will become silkRight now only one statue is visible, that of Viceroy Lord Hastings... will the rest survive or will be crushed... Dont know..!

This museum mostly contains modern artworks and a few exhibits that were found in and around of Patliputra. Most of its contents have now been moved to the new Museum. There is a wildlife and minerals sections which is quite unique. The park situation outside offers a soothing and scenic view. A good place to spend few hours with friends and family especially children. Entry fee is quite low and separate passes are required for mobile photography.

The vibe is great overall. There are a lot of places inside the museum which are still not open for visitors...eager to see what would it hold and when would we able to see it. I dont know if there are any guides available or not but it would be great if there were actual people interested in telling us the history behind the artifacts. The place has great potential.

A good filler museum, nothing special. Security guards more invested in its success - and more able guides - than the government employees sleeping in the corners, who didn’t seem to want to showcase the museum and the history. The best sections are the contemporary Bihari art gallery and the Buddha’s ashes - though the latter cost an extra (steepfee (Rs 500and not really worth it (especially given the actual museum worker makes rude comments to the helpful security guard wanting to make it an experience for a visitor; the half asleep bureaucrat must have thought a gora doesn’t understand his Hindi insults…)

The museum is surrounded by a beautiful scenery park. A number of statues, such as of Lord Hardinge, Viceroy of India dots the campus. The museum has a collection of over 45,000 exhibits, out of which only a small percentage of it are on display due to space constraint. The Relic casket, containing the mortal remains of Lord Buddha is one of its rare possessions. However the most famous collection of the museum is Didarganj Yakshi, the statue from 3rd Century BC. A brick sculpture of lord Buddha and stupas, named as Satabdi Smarak is situated in one of the corner of the museum. A cafeteria (Sangrahalaya Viharmanaged by Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation and a souvenir shop managed by HHEC (Ministry of Textile, GoIis present in one corner of the museum. The museum building also houses few government offices like office of the National Mission for Manuscripts, Govt. of India and Bihar Research Society. The museum also houses an auditorium, named as Jan Nayak Karpuri Thakur Auditorium at the back side. It was inaugurated in 2000.The museum building consist of two floor, with each floor having dedicated Galleries to display the artifacts in a proper way. The galleries are Natural History Gallery,Stone Sculpture Gallery,Orissan Stone Sculpture,Indian Stone Art Tradition,Terracota Gallery,Budda Relic Gallery,Bronze Galley, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayana Gallery,Art Gallery & war-weapon Gallery,Painting Gallery,Patliputra Gallery, Rajendra Gallery etc.Date of experience: December 2017

Must Visit place if you love architecture and building. If you belong to architecture related field then its a paradise for you.Talking about Artifacts in museum- if you are a history lover then this museum will disappoint you as most of findings and artifacts are moved to different museums from here. It has very little artifacts from ancient civilization. It is good for the younger school going children as it showcase different eddifies of wild animals and basic history related models. It has very neutral painting exhibition.Talking about Architecture of museum - it was made by British using Rajputana style of architecture with magnificent courtyard and openings. It shows how great our architecture was as it still meets the climatological and lighting demands. It magnifies the royalty of the inhabitants of those times. Must go there.

The new Patna museum is about an year old creation of Nitish govt but out of world concept. The campus is so well organised with proper parking, good signage everywhere. The walkway is partly covered with roof to protect from sun and rain. First of all a movie is played in the auditorium to brief the visitors about museum. The different sections labelled A, B, C, D etc display old historical and archaeological monuments, sculptures, paintings etc.In section D at first floor one must see the Sculpture of Yakshini, one of the best pieces of art.Children section displays wild life and artifacts and lastly the digital wall painting playing with background music is extraordinary.Canteen of course is non AC. It takes 3-4 hours to see all sections. Museum closes at 5 pm so better to go in the morning or early afternoon. Tickets are very nominal.
