The self-proclaimed "inventor of cheesesteak" offers classic versions of Philly's favorite sandwich.
My friend and I decided to do a taste test between the 2 dueling Philly Cheese steaks. Pats and Genos. There are kiddie corner from each other which was convenient. While my friend disagreed with me, I felt Pats was far superior in taste. Pats uses sharp provolone, chopped steak and fried peppers and onions that seem to have a sweetness to them with a hint of spice - possibly paprika. Whatever it was it was fantastic!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
First hesd to head for me ( got one of each same visitand Ginos was the clear victor. Pats bread and cheese are great, but the flavor and texture of the beef are vastly inferior to Ginos. Still a solid cheese steak.
Its was our first group trip to Philly and we tried both genos and Pats . Our group all preffered Pats. The cheese and flavor exceeded our expectations with every bite. It was so good that the next day we bought more for our ride back home.
A classic staple, of course there are better cheesesteaks across Philly. If you ask a regular they are going to tell you anywhere but Pats & Genos. But they are the original so it’s good. Unless you come on a 5a Thursday when they are actually closed cleaning. Then they open and quickly throw together a messy steak.
The cheesesteak was not what you hope to experience from the self proclaimed inventor of cheesesteaks. The bread was tough to chew, the meat didn’t taste quality, and the cheese was cheap like the kind you get with a pretzel at the theater. The service is fast as they have a system that keeps the line moving. That’s definitely a plus but you better know what you want when you get to the counter!
Have to say for the line that they had (high expectationsthe staff was pretty much extremely rude and unpleasant. It looks like that translated to their steak. No seasoning and the taste was bland. The bread was stale. I am not going to lie, I had higher expectations. The worst part is that they price gouge...close to $20 for the hero and $10 for 2 waters and one soda 😧
Great fast food.It was my first Cheese Steak in Philadelphia and its worth it.The food is delivered as fast as the first fast foods did (you order and you get your food right away).Their cheesesteak are delicious (it was my first one so I can tell if its better or not than other cheesesteaks but theyre marvelous). It was just a bit expensive but worth it.I recommend !Ps: yes its the place where Sylvester Stallone stand !
The guy who takes your order is not only rude but “0” hygienic. We saw he grabbed our cash money and immediately touched the bread 🥖. We told him to be more careful and he started screaming at us and threw out money to the ground!! 😳 saying he does that all day long (not wash his handsand serve food. GOOD LUCK with Moneky Pods, COVID etc. This place should be closed for sanitary reasons and that employee should be fired. After this we went to Geno’s and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Clean, people so nice, and they even gave us some pens as souvenirs.GO TO GENO’s just in front of this terrible place.
We did a taste test between Pats and Genos. Pats won. Their steak had a much better flavor and texture. Genos left a funny aftertaste and the meat was tough.
High key Pats > GenosI did like Pat’s better due to the pepper bar on the side, napkins, utensils and ketchup. Overall better food and self serve
Not my first time in Philadelphia but was my wifes so we were doing tourist things. I made sure she would get to experience different sandwiches on this trip !!! It would be incomplete without the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Had to try Genos steaks as it is popular. We decided to give them a try (split the sandwichthen head to the competition and do the same. Definitely not disappointed with the decision.. We went for the Wit peppers and onions steak with shrooms, provolone....and oh my, it was so delicious!!! I added some peppers for extra kick and it was perfect. I highly recommend.Only negative... it’s cash only.Line wasnt long when we got there.Pro tip the have a line just for sandwichesThey also have a line just for fries and drinks.Respectfully,BryanOklahoma City
Even with the line, its was super quick to get our food and drinks. I love the bread, super lite! Perfect sandwich.
We did the Pats vs Genoa challenge and I must say I liked Pats meat better but Genos had better bread.... neither was seasoned or super flavorfulit needed salt pepper and anything else you threw at it...overall neither has the best cheesesteaks
I think this place is overrated. We drove 2 hours to try Philadelphia cheesesteak. We decided to try Geno’s and Pat’z steak since it has a total of 11k reviews.Pat’z Steak —We ordered philly cheesesteak with provolone cheese - the steak is oily, though I’d say the taste is a little bit better than Geno’s.In addition, customer service at Patz was poor - cashier was rude.Geno’s —We ordered cheesesteak with whiz but the steak was tasteless - the sandwich only has slice steak that doesn’t have any seasoning, but onion and cheese whiz…and that’s about it.First picture is philly cheesesteak from Geno’sSecond picture is from Patz steakAll in all, Geno and Patz philly cheesesteak is just made of plain steaks with no ingredients (other than cheese or onion and there’s nothing that made these sandwiches taste special.
Ordered a cheesesteak with peppers and onions with cheez whiz. Everyone working was super nice, very fast and efficient. The place seemed clean and employees took an interest in making sure things were kept up.So I have to the cheese steak was good, not excellent or great. It was just good! Whoever made it didn’t put a lot of the cheez whiz on the sandwich. there was a big blob in middle of the sandwich which sadly is what is making me write this review. The meat on the cheese steak was ok.When I bit into the cheese steak I didn’t get any onions & peppers, or cheez whiz with that bite so I got a real good taste of the meat and there was little to no flavor in the meat. Once I opened my sandwich and evenly spread the toppings it was better but still lacked flavor. I wanted to give them 3.5 ⭐️
As a New Yorker, it honestly tasted like a White Castle Burger, but that’s just my opinion. We went because we happen to be in the area but I wouldn’t make the trip just for this. Too much hype for no reason.
First time having an authentic philly cheesesteak. What better place to get it from than the world famous Pats. No complaints about this experience! Ordered through DoorDash. Sandwich came well wrapped and packaged. The CheezWiz was just starting to get a little dry but this is why I ordered with provolone, if you prefer the wiz, best to order onsite and eat while its hot! Wasnt that big of deal for me.
Famous cheesesteak spot in Philly. Cash only. Cheesesteaks are $13+, fries are $5, sodas are $4. Seating outside and service is usually very quick.
Didnt do the comparing test, so my next visit will be to Genos. My opinion. The meat was a little chewy but was still well flavored and the added onions and cheese took it to another level of flavor. Would very much recommend and eat Again. Cheesy fries was also a hit. Dudes back there were also pretty helpful.
Listen…When it comes to Pats vs GenosFood wise its Pats that wins for me. There steaks just hit. I get the mushroom pepper steak with onions and wiz … GAME CHANGER. Now the out side is a lot less appealing looks wise but I think Genos is just compensating. Patsfood speaks for itself no need to do anything more.Good luck finding parking, you’re better off parking down the road and walking. The bar across the street is really good. It’s B.Y.O.Cheesesteak.But I’m from Ohio so what do I know about cheesesteaks..
Bread is better at Genos but the steak is better at Pats. We shall return here.Check out our travel youtube channel called Coolest Life.
Really loved Pats! Super quick service, prices ranging from 10-20 USD, great service. Got the Philly with extra Provolone, it was amazing!Had to use Pats spicy sauce and some chilis they had to add a kick to it.Note: they only take cash.
Great experience! Will be back— clean, no line, plenty of seating. No designated parking, but plenty of street parking in the surrounding blocks! Got the cheesesteak, no wit, whiz! Delish!
While this place has Philly steak that can taste good drenched in cheese whiz, I had mine without any cheese and just with mushrooms and onions so I can taste the quality of the meat, the bread, etc. The sandwich was tasty but I would not say it is the best Philly cheese steak out there. This place is just now a tourist attraction and they make their money from being famous but they are just downright rude. Maybe they are just playing their part being "south Philly". I also tasted Genos sub and liked their bread better as it was softer, their onion was cooked better with more flavor and their meat was of better quality. Genos was a cleaner place, more updated and quality of entire sub and everything that went into it was of better quality even their napkins were better and thicker. The people at Genos were nicer. Pats subs were bigger and if it is drenched in cheese whiz it can make it tastier I suppose.
We didnt get a change to eat at Ginos but Pats was good. I wouldnt say they were the best Philly cheese steaks Ive ever had though. We did not get cheese wiz which is probably were we went wrong but it was still a decent Philly.
Best cheesesteak I have ever had. Although it sounds weird, you must try the Cheese Whiz on the sandwich- it makes it that much better. Also, their cheese fries are phenomenal as well.
Its ok the cheese Wiz makes the Philly cheese steak taste good but other than that its overrated good tourist spot and they open late. I recommend the cheese fries they on point.
Cold $13 cheesesteak. Not even that full of steak as you can see in the pic. I’m definitely disappointed in Pat’s because I remember they used to be good during the last time I had one in 2018. I don’t think I’ll be back this year.
First time in Philly and was told Pat’s is the place to get a cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was delicious. I had a cheesesteak with added mushrooms and peppers. It was amazing!! They obviously have this down, you order your sandwich at one window, drinks & extras at the next. It is cash only so be prepared, although there was an atm there.
When I was in Philly I had to try the original cheesesteak. It was very good, they didn’t hold back on the onions or cheese which is great and the service is extremely fast. There’s nowhere to park in the area so I took an Uber. Not really the fault of the business though as it’s an old location not meant to accommodate the very high level of customers today.
Ffirst timers in philly: it is a MUST!!It tastes better as you delve more inside the cheese whizz. Go basic .. cheese steak with cheese whizz and carmalized onions. Pick some jalapenos from the side cart and Enjoy!!
Sometimes you can be a victim of your own success. Pats, the originator of cheesesteaks, is the king of steaks on this corner. But of course, there are now even better examples elsewhere. But forget that - theres something about coming here and trying the sandwiches against each others. Pats beats Genos. And while youre enjoying that cooked steak with gooey cheese, thats all that matters. Worth a visit for sure.
Well the hype is there and I decided to try it out and come pay my respects to where it all started and that was in Philadelphia home to the Philly Cheesesteak. Definitely reccomend if you are a visitor or wanting to be apart of what probably Philadelphians call the tourist trap. But I dont mind it at all I had to come and take a look at it.I got the cheesesteak with extra cheese. I hope I ordered the right one. I think next time I am here I am going to ask them what is the local favorite. Also and lastly this place is cash only so make sure you have money and not a credit card.
I found myself in Philly and had to get a cheesesteak from the same place Rocky Balboa got his from. I was shocked at how fast they can make a cheesteak to order. Approximately 10 seconds for any made-to-order steak. When you have one of Pats steaks you have now had the original Philly Cheese Steak. This place has been open for 100 years and is not far from the famous Italian Market. No Rocky pilgrimage is complete without putting one of these steaks in your glove.
My favorite Location for Philly Cheesesteak. Absolutely worth a visit. Often my first stop in Philly! The service ist fast and friendly even when it is crowded. Unique as only cash is accepted, at least on my last visit. It is recommended to consider the tips for ordering. We will come back for more Cheesesteaks!!
Not bad overall. Steak is a little dry, but they get you in and out of there. Definitely could’ve added a little more wiz to the hoagie. Check our YouTube for the full review: @TheGrubGuys. Follow us on IG: @realgrubguys
My first time in Philadelphia and my trip would be incomplete without the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Based on recommendations from the locals Pat ‘s king of steaks was quite poplar. I decided to give them a try and i wasn’t disappointed. I went for the cheez whiz steak and oh my, it was so delicious!!! I added some peppers for extra kick and it was perfect. I highly recommend.Btw, it’s cash only.
This place is a Philadelphia icon! Theyre cheesesteak is legendary and hard to beat. And of course the age old debate is which is better Pats or Genos and honestly it comes down to personal preference, but for me its Pats.. I prefer the style roll they use, slightly softer bread, and a little less heavy on the cheese, makes for an overall lighter sandwich.
The best sloppy cheesesteak in town! Good bread and meat ratio. Good flavor. One of the best in Philly.
I tried 3 cheesesteak place on my first trip to Philly. Genos was decent but I felt the steak didnt have any seasoning, Pats was seasoned much better and cheese wizd perfectly, then I hit Campos which was easily the most flavorful and friendly staffed. After their cheesesteak I tried their Roast Pork sandwich which was the bomb and what I would go back for.
Have no idea what all the hype is about! Im from Scranton PA and was in Philly to watch the cowboys romp the eagles. And figured Id stop at Pats to see if they really are as good as everyone says they are and I can honestly say that nobody goes there for the food. The best thing there was their fries which is $7 for a little complimentary cup! People are definitely only going there for the experience! Extremely disappointed with the quality of food. Might have been good quality steak but absolutely no flavor in the rolls were not fresh at all. What you would figure that they wouldnt have stale bread because how many hoagies they sell but thats not the case.
Their food are good but not for the amount you paid for! They dont have ample seating. Place needs an upgrade with the cash they are getting. They are CASH BASIS ONLY.
Amazingly done in a beautiful old-fashioned style place. Probably the best cheese fries I ever had and also a yummy cheese steak. A must if you visit Philly. 5 star.
Am amazing gastronomic institution in Philadelphia. I was 2 miles to get my Philly Cheesesteak from Pats, and then 2 miles back to my hotel and it was worth every step. Any visitor to Philadelphia must go for a Cheesesteak from where they originated from in 1930.
Visiting Jersey? Make sure your host brings you here!! Excellent Cheesesteak! Absolutely delicious and I added the cheese fries to boot! Happy!! Authentic!
Super fast and extremely tasty! The cheesesteak here is a must if you are in Philly. Dress appropriately for the weather! You will be outside so dont be complaining if you wore shorts and a T-shirt in the middle of December. Just sayin. Seriously get you one of these and enjoy!
Based on multiple consultations with locals we encountered - Pat’s won out on our decision on which place to try between here and Geno’s. Very tasty steak sandwiches! I had mine wit cheese wiz and wife went with provolone. Well with the trip.
Was so excited to sample a true Philly cheese steak. Efficiency amazing quick the steak was a little dry for my liking and I the cheese was a little too thick which I use the cheese whiz and it didnt get down into the meat. Pricing is average. Possibly could have been a little bit more friendly of an atmosphere but all in all not bad.
Always enjoy. Genos used to have better meat but Pats had better bread and if youre going to have a sandwich then the bread has to right. But now I think Pats meat was as good or better. Definitely recommend. Always enjoy my meal there. "Wit & whiz" Best way to go.
I have heard about this fame of the Philly cheese steak couple of years back and eagerly waiting. I tried with onion and American cheese. It is of course meaty, but lack in taste. There is no or not sufficient salt. Not sure if that is expected. Bread is rubbery. To make signature dish, the main ingredient should also be signature. They should really add grainy bread rather than rubbery.
