R. do Museu, 5150-610 Vila Nova Foz Côa, Portugal, Vila Real
Archaelogical park with tours of major paleolithic carved rock art sites & a modern museum.
Tourist trap! 6 euros is too much. Only 4 rooms with some monitors and some reproduction of rocks to project images.Nothing to do with a real archaeological museum. The panoramic view is beautiful.
Very nice, but the lack of information made the visit not so goof
The museum is fantastic both for the exhibits but also the views. In addition, the building itself blends well. From the museum you can buy guided tours and boat tours to the Parque Arqueológico. There is also an amazing restaurant on site.
Nice story of the park and better understanding of human evolution.
Incredible value for the price!Very interactive, educational and also comfortable, especially for adults. The app is quite good, but the wifi signal could be improved (needed for the app).Additionally, we went there before our schedule night tour to the Penascosa site. Very good preparation and complete experience (7€ for the museum and 20€ for the guided tour in Penascosa)
Beautiful massive concrete structure.
Very modern, very beautiful, most displays in Portuguese.
Archeological site and Museum. This UNESCO classified as World Heritage. Open air engravings will amaz you.
Well explained reconstructions of stone age art show that these ancient humans were not so different from ourselves. A clean, well designed experience.
Excellent experience. Great architecture, good exhibition, not overwhelming, about the engravings and their explanation.
Very interesting archeological museum exhibiting replicas of paleolithic rock carvings and artifacts found over many miles in the Vale do Coa below when a power company tried to build a dam and a hydroelectric plant. Thankfully, neither the dam nor the plant were ever built due to a change in political power.
Very interesting museum. Rare to find rock art. Explanations let you really understand their significance. To be completed with the visit on site elsewhere in the valley (Penascosa)
Its very interesting but you need a tour guide to explain what you are seeing. Very nice views so it well worth a visit.
A great place to learn about prehistoric art. The Audio guide gives you a lot of information and the replica with the explication are worth seeing.Plan around 2 hours to make the most of your visit.
Outstanding archeological museum! Great use of technology to help guide understanding of the layers of information. Fantastic guides with deep understanding of their field and the Coa Valley historical area.
Theres not much original carvings to see in the museum and the exhibits are confusing. Cafe was great but no outdoor seating (great views).
We were doubting to come all this way but are so glad we did. It was very cool seeing the rock art and the guide was amazing. Antonio knew everything there was about the valley, even what flowers the bee get their honey from. He was also just a nice, fun guy. This is so worth it!
Really nice museum and the view from the bar/restaurant is breathtaking. highly recommended
Unique and well organized museum. Had no idea about the sheet rock carvings in the Paleolithic and pre-history era. Well spaced rooms and interaction exhibits.
A must see and visit at Foz Côa.Excellent museum, excellent views, the interactions are top. The museum restaurant is just amazing. I recommend the wild mushrooms with rice, a typical dish from Trás-dos-Montes region.
Interesting place but finally few information to contextualize the litographies. It looks more as a museum for children... Only copies are exposed in the museum, you have to pay an extra fee for each excursion you want to do if you want to see real pieces and you have to reserve for thatA walking parh along the mountain would be far better but is not possible.
The museum is a joke. I could put everything thats inside the museum in my living room, and still have enough space for a bar.
supposedly its beautiful but I didnt get to do the tour.
The location and the museum building are very beautiful and the museum presentation of the history of rock art is interesting . However j did a guided tour of the rock art itself and found it a bit underwhelming, its very difficult to see the designs because they are very faintly etched on the rocks. Theyre obviously very very important historically, but perhaps not the most exciting thing to visit!
The museum is well designed and it blends nicely into the surrounding landscape. The view is nice and you can contemplate the river below. Theres free parking next to the biilding but there is a small entry fee for you to visit the museum.
Great place. You should call and book a tour to a sites well in advance, as there is a lot of people.
Booked a slot to take a look at the rock art and it was truly an experience. The guide was always ready to answer any questions and was truly passionate about explaining the rock art that we saw. There were only a few of us in the group so there was no rush at all and we took our time learning about the rock art. I spent some time at the museum too, and while it was quite sparse and I think I was there when it was undergoing some exhibition renovations, I did enjoy myself wandering around and listening to the audio guide. Its a small museum, so youll probably be able to spend about 2 hours there. Do spend some time going up to the rooftop though - theres amazing views there too.
My favorite place in Portugal. Great museum. Great restaurant with great view of the river valley. Very peaceful to just sit on the chairs outside the restaurant. So quiet. Never very crowded.
Amazing place to visit. We were here some years ago. We have enjoyed our trip here. Very friendly people and a good story was told about the history of the stones. This is something that you must visit. Dont miss it
The museum itself is amazing and we were really surprised there is such a place in Portugal but... only one of the personal at the info desk spoke English, the beautiful tours outside museum are difficult to arrive to (20minutes ride with a taxi driver who does not speak English and you have to pray for him to appear on time and bring you to the meeting point). The museum is so thrilling architecturally but there is not much use out of it. Lack of promotion and logistics of operation.Still can’t believe that we got to see Paleolithic rock art on UNESCO site and there were only 4 other visitors with us.
We hadn’t visit the museum, but the view is amazing !
Fascinating area with paleolithic rock art dating back 12000 to 25000 years
Great museum. Very interesting and impressive presentation of the prehistoric images. We combined the visit with a tour of the Penascosa site. Many thanks to our guide - we had a great day.
Great museum, make sure to book ahead to see the rock art, we unfortunately didnt get to see them this trip but hopefully well come back to see them.
Good museum with good explanations of the valleys rock art, much of it 20,000 years old. Many graphic panels, some replicas and some very good animations. Brutalist concrete building is not to my taste. It feels like a nuclear bunker. But the cafe/restaurant is bright and beautiful with views across the mountains. The terrace outside has a beautiful view down to the river.
Hidden treasure in Portugal. I little hard to schedule the walking and kayaking excursions online or via phone. We only did the museum and it was impressive.
Very neat arqueological explanation and beautiful landscape
This place is fascinating! The natural beauty is breathtaking. Then you have the stone carvings and all the wildlife. Well worth the effort to visit.
Very interesting site! Enjoyed it more than I thought I would! Would love to come back!
Must seeTo realize how historic is this placeMuseum only 6 euros
Impressive and unique!Extraordinary architecture that fits perfectly into the landscape! If you have a chance, go for a guided tour to the valley, don‘t miss, but check on times with good light conditions, so it is easier to see the „paintings“Thanks again to the wonderful staff that supported us so well! The restaurant is worth a visit - the view on the Douro and Coã is breathtaking! Perfect for a sundowner 😁#letsguide
Great day out of scenic cruises duoro river
Guide passionate about his work made our visit memorable and exciting, in the workshop after the museum tour he showed three ways to make fire, four different ways to tie arrow heads (which he made in front of usonto a spear, and showed other features of day to day life uncovered at the site. The building itself has won an architecture award, it resembles a cave in many ways, including the low light levels - be careful, one member of our group fell over a seat she didnt see.
After our 6th audioguides battery died we finally gave up on trying new ones. Some rooms have English flyer but others dont. Then there are many panels with short movies where you have wait all the time until a movie in your language starts.
Visited the museum and I was very disappointed - audioguide out of charge (after trying 6th machine I just gave upand English describtion of rooms missing half of the time. I only enjoyed paintings, mostly on screens, for which I didnt need to visit a museum.
You must go and look back 22,000 years into human history
We didnt visit the museum but took the guided tour of the Rock Art. Wow!!! The guided tour was very informative. Our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and spoke excellent English. The Rock Art is amazing to see. We went with our two boys sons who learnt a great deal (as did wefrom this very informative tour. Highly recommend. Not suitable for people with mobility issues due to terrain.
The view is fenomenal, the museum itself I think it is not worth seeing. It would be more interesting seeing the prehistoric arts themselves on real life, which are only a few kms down the valley :p
A lovely museum with great exhibits on Paleolithic and Neolithic rock art, globally and in Portugal. The tours are most worthwhile and are best booked in advance. Notable exhibits include lithics technology by age, stratigraphic sequences and specific site descriptions. Members of the staff take themselves very seriously but otherwise a pleasant experience.
Its nearby Foz côa and it has a privilege view through the landscape of Coa river entering Douro river. Strong and interesting architecture. The museum itself its interesting to understand the history about côa prehistoric civilization. Its also good to know a little bit of the villages on tis surroundings, fauna and flora.
