Papa Chou's Yum Cha & Chinese Dining - Chinese restaurant in Dunedin, New Zealand
Very delicious yum cha … clearly made in house… very good quality…..
I tried this restaurant for the first time and was very impressed. The dishes were very tasty and the staff were very happy and attentive.Get a verity of meals and do a banquet with friends its a great way to try everything! We parked on the one way and walked down it wasnt far or theres parking outside which is easy after 5pm
Great service, food and extremely good value for money. The $30 pp banquet is a ton of very tasty food. Great for big parties.
The prawn roll and har gow prawn dumpling outer wrapper for yum cha was too wet and didnt hold together well when picked up. So probably not the best yum cha masters yet.One waitress was grumpy (probably the owners daughter and the other was friendlyso service was average.
Good service and generous portion, tasted quite nice
food was average but some are good. waiters/waitresses’s customer service needed to be improved, your tone, voice, and manners are represent your restaurant. Unless you see your restaurant as a fast food restaurant.
Great taste and very generous quantity of food as well.
Fantastic Chinese food, best I’ve had in NZ and maybe the world!
Delicious yumcha but that menu is a little small for me. desserts are amazing! the Deep fried bao bun is divine!
Went for Takeaways last night. Purchased combination fried Rice and a Broccoli dish. The rice was tastlessand glungy. Meat was too chewy and the Broccoli was over cooked. Very disappointing 😞 and probably wont go there again. They use to be so good.
Takes too long to come out, dishes are salty; especiallly the sizzling prawns
Always tasty, huge portions of great food. A little understaffed when we visited but who isn’t right now!
Crispy spring rolls were soggy ,and our chicken satay was terrible. Very disappointing as we have had good food previously.
Amazing customer service and authentic food. Every single I tried was perfect. I had deep fried sweet and sour pork, shu mai, prawn dimsum, deep fried squid, fried pork with rice, duck with rice. Except for deep fried squid to be a bit salty, all plates were fantastic. Highly recommended
4 of us and we had yum chai. I was very impressed with their dim sum, we have order 15+ dishes . My favorite was the deep fried squid and I would rate their dim sum over 4/5 easily, even better yum chai than the ones in the bigger city I.e. Hamilton. The only let down was the chicken fried rice with salted fish, the salted fish was great with generous amount but they have used fresh cooked rice so they were a bit soggy and without the high heat "wok hei" taste. Apart from that everything were pretty good!
Some of the best ever Yum Cha that I have ever tasted...and we are avid yum cha consumers.. great service and nice ambient atmosphere..will certainly include it on my must go to list..thanks.
Excellent service and outstanding food - would definitely recommend the seafood stir fry noodles.
Very authentic Chinese dishes. Dim sum is tremendous. Great variety of dishes. Service friendly & efficient. Reasonable prices. Recommended for sure......
Best chicken fried rice in Dunedin.
Excellent service and great food. The staff is always very nice and friendly and the food never disappoints.Highly recommended
Delicious food and the staff are great. Came in here based on the reviews and it completely surpassed what we expected
Delicious food, friendly staff and great value for the money, probably one of the best chinese restaurant in Dunedin.
Went there every weekend, Good overall. Just recently changed dim sum chef? I had the pine apple bun Everytime, it was good until today, dont fix something thats not broken, bring the old recipe back plz..
Delicious food and very attentive staffs. The place is a bit small but clean.
I felt stressed the minute I was lead upstairs to my table. The staff are incredibly loud frantically running about when the place wasnt even very busy. Staff do not check on you and you have to work hard to get their attention. Food is quite mediocre and pricey for the quality. Rice is very low grade.
Very yum yum cha 😍. There are options for vegan and vegetarians. I would recommend the crispy fried pan cake. For vegetarians, the try the tofu (vegetarianoption.Hopefully in the future there are more options for vegan and vegetarians alike but for now I would say its one of the best yum cha restaurants for vegetarians or vegans in Dunedin
A characteristic Chinese dine in, they have specials for steams and special Egg Tart. You may have to do reservation for dinner specially on the weekend.
Arguably the best place for dim sum in Dunedin. Really tasty food and nice, rich flavours.
Big disappointment today. Been there before and its always been great. Took a group there for lunch today. Eventually we just WALKED OUT after 2 hours of watching others who had arrived long after us being served.Service was unbelievably slow, surly and totally disinterested. Some food arrived eventually but it was so late (and wrong dishesthat everyone was totally over this place.Wake up guys!
Very nice, enjoyed all our food. Highly recommended
Tasty food, friendly service. Food fresh and hot, served promptly after ordering.
Awful. Just awful. The crispy chicken spring rolls were just cabbage and soft and old seeming. Steamed buns were rubbery and the pepper squid was soggy tough and tasteless. Oh and the wontons had peanut sized filling and soft wrapping, completely tasteless.
Not often Im in Dunedin but, Papa Chous is always on the list! Simply amazing food. Just go and enjoy people ☺️
Amazing custard buns and chicken fried rice and the salt and pepper squid is good too
Delicious and generous portions. The sweet and sour pork is a must try.
Perfect place to have a nice and tasty lunch with your friends. Food is amazing and service as well. Very authentic
This place is the same owner to chopsticks 101 but much worse. Food was tasteless and not good priced. The only reason we went there was because we stayed across the road at law court. Will not come back when we visit Dunedin next time
Food is fresh and tasty. Decor is beautiful. Staff are friendly and efficient. Tea selection is huge. If you like yum cha you’ll love this hidden Dunedin gem. Pity they don’t do egg tarts but apart from that, this place is excellent. Try the kumara hedgehogs for dessert!
Yum cha here is okay. Very different from what Im used to in Auckland and Wellington. Its edible.
Dim sum is delicious but not amazing, Ive definitely had better. Main dishes are average, just the same as Chopsticks101. They are both owned by the same family, but its cheaper at Chopsticks, so just go there for main dishes, unless you want to pay for the atmosphere that Papa Chous provides.Ive read so many reviews on here mentioning poor service, and yes, staff needs to be retrained. Waitresses were harsh and rude. And constant screaming at each other makes for an uncomfortable dining experience.
I love walking into a busy restaurant as that is a good indication that you’re about to have a wonderful food experience. And that we did - my expectations were surpassed! Lunch was delicious and there was so much food I even got left overs (automatic 10/10 on that front - who doesn’t love left overs of a meal that was an absolute hit?!). Every dish was cooked perfectly, it was fresh and flavoursome, and the staff are lovely and accommodating . One of my top Asian eateries here in Dunedin. If you are looking for an authentic food experience, you can’t go past Papa Chou’s!
Amazing food! Amazing Service! Went for the first time with my fam (6ppland we didnt know what to order -so many options! Went for the set banquet and it was awesome. No shortage of food, no awkward *having to take less than you actually want cos youre with a group* feels. My family can put away a lot of food and we left with 3 dishes in a doggy bag. Our banquet was 30pp and I wouldnt do anything different next time. Such good value. Our server was a younger guy and he was so great I had to let him know on the way out. Great service makes a huge difference. 14/10 would recommend. 👌👌
Couldnt have asked for better! Service was perfect. Friendly attentive staff. BYO wine $7 bottle which is great. Four of us ordered the $30pp banquet... and there was too much food which they were happy to wrap up so we can eat for lunch tomorrow! Lots of people seemed to over order so they could enjoy later! Food was great. Crispy fresh veggies... we will definitely be back ☺
Summary: your food is better than the other restaurant in the middle of town. My commendation to the chefs. I tasted yum cha from the North down to the South island and the chefs dishes are a notch above the rest. However, please consider reviewing services by the head waitress and her colleagues.I came by on Saturday lunch at a quiet time and found service was slacking and lukewarm if not downright half heartedly. Not once, twice, but thrice. So it was somewhat disappointed. The staffs at the other restaurant who do not speak English as well as your waitresses do were more friendly and attentive than what i exprienced here. There was a distinction of service provided between E & A guests. We are in Dunedin. Food is not just tasted but also experienced by the service.Nothing and no one is perfect. We can all learn a thing or two from each other. Ill be glad to provide fair and detailed explanation should you wish to improve. For the time being, food is great.
I think around 12 of us went there on Friday night, but booked 5:30 so wasnt too busy. All sat there and food came reasonably quick, dont think we needed to wait long, I got Sweet & Sour Pork which has huge volume I should have shared with someone, but I ended up taking away as souvenir for my family. Taste was decent and staff are all friendly, very responsive. Nice to know we have Asian food restaurant very near from Octagon.
Perfect! Will definitely come back here again 😊 Thank you for giving such a great service.
After wasting $80 in a taxi fair driving to Glenfalloch Gardens only to find it closed due to a private function (albeit a beautiful drive-note to self-in future call ahead to check!🙄)Papa Chou’s Yum Cha was 2nd on the list...so there I headed. SO glad I did!!! Probably THE best, tastiest and freshest yum cha I have ever eaten (and I’ve been to a few😉)The Prawn Hargow were spectacular.Apologies for the photo, it was an afterthought.Delicious..,so glad I stopped. No trolley-order off menu
Good food for a quick yum cha lunch stop. Service was prompt and very helpful. I have heard great reviews from friends about the Portuguese custard tarts but ours were soggy. Amazing crispy and chewy fried pork dumplings pastry dish that seemed to be very freshly made. Pictures on the menu help very much when selecting what to order on the cards, instead of carts coming around the restaurant. Large upstairs area that we prefer over the smaller noisy downstairs.
Sooo good! Always worth booking to he sure of a table. Service is fast. Prices vary from cheaper for Yum Cha dishes to typical prices for a main on the a la carte menu.
A new restaurant in the town centre and next to the popular Dunedin Railway station. A Chinese restaurant with Yum Cha (Cantonese ways of eating).
