Site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896, now hosting ceremonial events & live music concerts.
Historical stadium where 1st modern Olympics were held in 1896.Impressive size of marble construction. Many events take place here such as musical events as well as the finish line of the Authentic Athens Marathon.
Really enjoyed our visit here . I did not know if it was really going to be worth the entry fee or if we should have just took a picture from outside but it was! The audio guide gives you a lot of information. I’m glad we went inside
Great experience seeing where the first modern day Olympics was help. Amazing place and also a mini museum (not the car).. steps are very steep for anyone who is not actively mobile.Must see in athens.
Great site steeped in history close to the National Gardens. Tickets €10 adults and €5 for students and over 65s. Under 6s enter free. Audioguide included in price and available right by the entrance.
You do not have to pay the entrance fees - its a stadium made out of marble. You can read & take photos from the outside. Worth a visit but everything can be read and experienced outside without paying the entrance fees.
Birth place of the Olympics.10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children.Very small museum onsite with posters and Olympic torch to see.The only white marble stadium.Impressive to look around.Spent 40 minutes here
This was worth the 10 euro per ticket admission price. This includes the audio guide, the small handheld device, which I think is essential. There are 12 stops on the audio guide in total, and all of them were fascinating. The venue itself is spectacular, and for me one of the highlights of my entire trip to Athens.Make sure to walk up and down the steps, get a complete view of the stadium, and head into and up the cave and stairs to view the Olympic torches and posters. The BEST view is from section 21-24 at the very top row, which gives you a beautiful view of the Parthenon and temples, as well as the National Gardens. It takes about 60 minutes if you take your time and soak in the atmosphere, although if you were in a rush you could do it in 30 minutes.
What a well kept beautiful piece of history. Absolutely loved being here. Love at night when the light comes in ut looks like the seats are made of gold. Worth the visit
Not that important in my opinion. You can just get a complete view from outside without buying tickets. Tickets will cost 10 euros. Climbe up to the top to appreciate the view.I have seen people come from the hill next to the stadium, obviously not paying anything. I dont think its a bad place to visit. I just dont think they need to take money from tourists if people can reach the stadium from the adjacent hill.
Best site to visit. The rest were all poorly constructed and have fallen apart. The Mexicans! They know how to make lasting monuments. Athenians, not so much:-)
Many might miss this if they are blitzing through Athens since it its 20+ minutes outside of the main city center, but this was the most impressive attraction we visited. The stadium is well-preserved and looks like it was abandoned only a handful of years ago, instead of being several centuries old. For 10€ admission, you get to run the track as if you are an Olympian athlete, stand on the podium, and climb up the stairs to get a birds eye view. Incredible piece of history that is a nice break from the Doric style that comprises most of the ancient Greek architecture.
A must visit site. So much history of the first Olympics site. Facilities are very well maintained and friendly staff. Yes, you can get some good photos without we entering, but you dont get the full experience without entering. Worth the entrance fee.
The panathenaic Stadium is great to visit if you have spare time in Athens but I wouldnt be too disappointed if missing it. You can see a lot of the stadium from the outside without entering. The adminission fee is quite high (especially when travelling as a family/group). During our visit we were told we couldnt walk on the track because they were preparing it for a concert/show. You are given audioguides which have numbers linked to different points in the stadium. We found the audioguides quite difficult to use and hear. I would recommend going to the museum inside the stadium if you enjoy the Olympics, its very small but has torches and posters from various games over time. You can spend about 15 minutes at the stadium if you just want to see what it looks like, or 1. 5 hours if you are listening to the guide, climbing the stairs and going to the museum.
Amazing stadium. Entirely made of marble. It really is breathtaking when you climb all the way up to the stadium. Only $10 euros for adult admission. Make sure to bring water and sunscreen. No shades at all!
To be fair, I had my share of doubts about this place. I couldnt be more wrong. So interesting to see and experience. Its a large stadium, the view is amazing and you can even explore this small museum about the Olympics. Also packs a small exercise as you definitely will climb up the stands to see the view from the top. Thats an unmissable thing to do in Athens for me.
An inspiring place to visit for dreamers, historians, & anyone who has ever been part of a track team. Go late in the day so you can have the place all to yourself. Stand on the podiums, close your eyes, and imagine the roar of the crowd as you become a part of Olympic history.
Awesome to be there is so differentWe had a audio guide part of the ticket very informativeWalking the track being where the torch was lit onceLearning about the history of the place seeing the photos on the walls well worth it
Fantastic piece of history. Get an audio guide as part of the €10.00 entry fee. We ran around and took photos. It was a great monument to some awesome athletes.
Loved walking round here, beautiful stadium. 10 euros to get in which I thought was quite expensive but youre only here once. Dont forget to go round the museum which is located through the tunnel.
Its 10 euro to get in so make the most of it while you are here. Most of what is can see is it. There is also a small museum in the stands so you can walk through the tunnel to that. Its good fun for photos or if you want to run
The birth of the Olympic games. Its enormous and has so many things to see. The marble seats, the thrones for the king and queen of that time. They will provide free audiobooks that comes with the entry ticket which is translated in many languages. It will take an hour to see the whole thing. Theres also a room inside where the torches and posters of previous Olympic games are held. Its a must visit. You will also learn about the history of how it came to be and how the games were held at that time. Its an architectural marvel.
I have no words to express this fantastic monument. I am grateful that I got a chance to walk and see the place where the first Olympics took place. This stadium is more than 2300 years old but looks newly constructed as it is fully built with marble that never ages. There is a 10 euros fee per person to get in, but it is nothing compared to what you get out of it. They give you an audio guide when you submit your ID card temporarily.
Great place to visit for both the history buffs and those who love sport. Do go into the museum, some interesting artefacts from previous Olympic Games including posters and the Olympic flames. Good value for €10.
A must-see attraction of Athens. Allow at least 1h and highly recommend to use the audio guide they provide on entry.
Overpriced for what you can see (10 euros for adults and 5 for students). Does not come with a free audio guide. If you stand outside you have seen it all. Locals climb from the hill inside (which is very easy to do so, it even has stairs in and out every 100m). Nice place, but do not pay just watch from outside or be a local 😌
Its an amazing experience to see where the Olympic Games originated. With the tour guide in your hand, you discover the history of the stadium. You can also see a lot of torches from all the previous Olympic Games. I recommend you run a 100meters on the track to get the full experience.
Our children were keen to visit so we went along. Very dramatic site, although quite expensive for the amount of time we were there. Certain worth going if part of an Athens combo ticket
A beautiful place, full to the brim with history and sports culture. The entry ticket it €10 for adults and €5 for under 18s. At first we thought not to go, but then we did and it was definitely worth it! If you walk to the top you get a view of the city of Athens as well as the Acropolis. The audio guide comes free and it is very interesting. A must go!
One of the best stadium tours to treat yourself to for those who are fascinated by Stadia and its construction. The audio guides provided take you on a tour through the ages and offer concise yet informative insights into how this stadium came to be, its association with modern Olympic competition and the world’s most significant athletics event. The architecture, aura and views from all around are spectacular. This gem has its place in the golden age of Greek history and owes its solid marble exterior to Herodes Atticus, a prominent second-century Athenian Roman Senator. This is not something any tourist in Athens should miss out on.
Amazing site to see, huge when inside. Only costs €10 for entry which also includes a audio tour you can collect from a Booth near the entrance but it wasnt manned when we went in so didnt collect a tour on our visit. Some of the steps are quote steep in parts. The Olympic torch museum element of the stadium is down near the rear left and is a great part of the stadium too containing a great collection of torches used over the years. There is also a 3 tier podium where you can have some pictures taken of 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions. Easy location to get to if using the hop on hop off busses as they have stops across the road from the stadium too.
Absolutely incredible. The stairs are very steep, but if youre able to climb to the top, its worth it. It feels so surreal and the view is beautiful. If you arent able to go up, standing in the middle of the stadium and admiring it all is just as breathtaking. I recommend checking out the little museum as well, its cool to see all the different olympic torches.
The spectacular Panathenaic Stadium remains one of the city’s most popular attractions and is a shining beacon of modern Athens. The stadium when through several transformations over its long history, it eventually became the home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and remains the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble.Beginning in the late 5thcentury BC when the great orator Lycurgus sought to build Athens an appropriate venue to host sporting events as part of the Panathenaic Games, one of the city’s major celebrations. The stadium originally had a rectangular shape that was typical of ancient Greek stadiums (such as in ancient Olympia and ancient Epidaurusand would be used for the first time in 330BC.A few centuries later and after the site lay buried in soil and stripped of its valuable marble, the Panathenaic Stadium was set to start a new life as the idea of hosting the first modern Olympics in Athens took hold from the mid 1800’s.When the French gathered a world congress in 1894 to discuss the concept of a modern Olympic Games, it was agreed that Paris would host it in 1900 to coincide with their World Fair of the same year. The Greek representative Dimitrios Vikelas saw an opportunity and suggested that Athens host the Olympics in 1896, but did so without the consent of the Greek government. The world congress agreed but the problem for Vikelas was that Greece had declared bankruptcy a year earlier and the government could not fund an Olympic Games on Greek soil.
Great historical place. Only 10 euros for adult admission, which came with an audio explanation for 12 locations. Each audio location was only about 3 minutes, so it was exact, concise, not overwhelming. It took about an hour to see it all.We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of the Olympics, past and present.
Excellent visitor attraction, with a well paced, informative and right length audio guide.Great to also run a lap of the track with the ghosts of past Olympians and imagining the roar of the crowds!
A must be in Athens. I recommend to visit for photos in the evening. During day can be crowded. (But if u want to visit- go inside, go until 19:00).
The location of the Olympics birth. a stadium that is truly made of marble. the Magnificent place that gives people hope; it provides a platform for the athlete to shine in the particular sport every 4 years. interestingly, you can see the Olympic logos on only one side but not the other side.I would highly recommend obtaining the audio guide otherwise it is just a stadium that has no meaning without knowing the story behind it. The entry fee now is 10 euros per person well back then that used to be 5 before the pandemic. If you want to save up the money for entering it seems like you can climb over on the side on the top where people jog around by the mountain.
Great experience to see this stadium. All marble, grab an audio to listen to the history and facts. The tunnel is cool, and the torch displays are great to see. €10 for the tickets, take some pictures, walk or run around it and feel the grandeur of the stadium. It does get hot and there isnt any shade. Bring some water and walk towards the tunnel to cool off. Enjoy.
Great place to visit for Olympic and athletic history. Visit the museum for posters and Olympic flames from past Olympiads. Visitors can run or walk round the track. Theres even segments on Strava!
Cool place. Didnt climb up to the top. Too hot. Scorchio! Not busy. Free talking guides. Expensive souvenirs inside shop but cheaper from outside official shop.
Oh my, what an atmosphere, what a place.Audio guide device is included and I recommend you take one and follow the narrator, such history is revealed and fascinating facts about the place that you would otherwise overlook. There are no off-limits areas and you can sit in one of two pairs of royal thrones as you please.Be warned all that polished marble makes for heat in a sunny day so take it easy and hydrate. Its quite a sight and you cant help but imagine the great spectacle of the early Olympians competing there.Cheap entry and no time limit, there is a small Olympic museum up the atmospheric gladiator entrance tunnel carved through rock and marble, worth a visit, Ill leave the audio guide to tell you about the naked dancing maidens 😉
Amazing historic place where the first modern Olympics were held...Walkable distance from city centre and Plaka region...Discount entry tickets for students...Great view...There is a separate museum of Olympic artifacts inside...A small souvenir shop outside the entry gate has nice collection of some good souvenirs...One can also see a beautiful view of Acropolis from the top seats of this stadium..Overall, it was a great experience for me to visit this place....
Really cool historic stadium. There is a discount for students and young kids.In the stadium, there is a nice view on the Acropolis on the east wing upon entry on the top stairs. There are many opportunities for nice pictures, a track where you can run on and there is a small museum with nice facts about different Olympics being held over there entire would with some cool posters and real Olympic torches being used. The Historic Olympic Stadium is definitely a must-visit when you are in Athens!
The audio guide provided for free was excellent. Highly recommend even though it is not part of the combo ticket and will cost you an extra 10 euro. The architectural significance of the stadium is second to none. Its a must visit.
A must! A very beautiful venue, host to the first modern Olympic Games, built of stunning white marble. Dont miss out - its totally worth it. Excellent destination for photography too.
Lovely experience. Getting to see history always an amazing adventure. Greece has many site to see. This being the worlds only white marvel stadium makes it that much better. You wont believe it till you see it. Its 10 euro to get in and worth it
This was one of the highlights of our time in Athens which was totally unexpected. The stadium itself is amazing, a marble covered structure that sits 50,000 and is cut into the side of a large hill is bound to impress anyone who sees it. But the true beauty of this place is the aura you get from standing in the birthplace of the Olympic Games!Pop of the audio guide and walks around learning about the history of the site, the games and how it was transformed a set of games to honour the gods of Olympus to an international way of creating harmony and peace between nations.Highlights included the perfectly framed view of the Acropolis, getting to walk the tunnel the athletes use from the changing rooms and hearing the audio guide soundscape, see the collection of posters and Olympic Games torches from every on of the modern games.
Great historical place, although has not a lot to set from inside our worths a short visit. From there you also have a great view of the Acropolis.
Im runner, for me this place is special and must have to visit. But for everyone itll be very good place for visit. Its wonderful antique stadium, very old and interesting. Huge history and very interesting fact that its still using for Rome Marathon!! Awesome. So if you want to try to run on this stadium, you can do it ( I paid about 5 euro for this opportunity)
Astonishing and wonderful place! This is truly a raw and rugged landmark of ancient times and worth an engaged visit. It boasts incredibly panoramic views of the entire stadium and the history of it is very palpable. To stand where the Olympics of countless years past were held, is truly both thrilling and wondrous. The stadium is great for pictures as well, and you get bountiful views of other classical Athens landmarks on all sides of your view. Truly recommended to visit and enjoy! This is beautiful Greece and Athens at its wonderful best!
Really amazing place. Audio guide is included in ticket price so you dont miss anything. Additional you can see collection of Olympic torches and posters for each Olympics. Strongly recommend to get here when there is little less sunny ;)
