Guanacaste Province, Bagaces, Costa Rica, La Cruz
National park rich in flora & fauna & covering nearly 49,000 acres, established in 1990.
This is an awesome cruise you will see crocodiles, birds, iguanas, in their natural environment , the restaurant serves a great lunch.
Great park we took a tour with a boat ride and had a good time. I am not sure you would see anything without the boat. The dirt road getting there was fun and is an adventure in itself.
Beautiful. The best place to see several birds in natural areas .
Great place to see deer, pecaries, monkeys and lots of birds
We were on a Tempisque River safari of sorts. We were able to spot crocodiles, iguanas, Tiger Herons and other tropical birds and a number of monkeys. No need to spend more than 60-90 minutes on the boat.
Absolutely amazing great place for birdwatchers! 🤠
Love it great day out
Awesome place to go for a series of small hikes. And at the far end of the park is a boat tour of the river that is amazing. Do NOT miss the boat tour.
Great boat ride to see wildlife. We saw crocodiles, iguana, kingfishers, howler monkeys, white face monkeys, and more. Beautiful scenery too.
Great park, in total I saw three other groups of people on the day I went, I arrived first thing in the morning. I went on the first 2.1km hike which if I were you I’d pass on - very buggy and not much to see unless you stumble across wildlife. I also went to the lookout labeled #1 on their map, a short but tiring hike up. Bring lots and lots AND LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER. Hot! Also a lot of bugs so either a lot of bug spray or a long sleeve. I also did the boat tour which was cool, the guide had a great eye.All in all I say an array of wildlife.
Super cool river tour with our tour guide Jacob. Got to see crocodiles and monkeys...birds and lizards as well
Beautiful even if very dry at the moment. We were barely the only visitors… and yes, don’t forget that mosquito repellent for the hike going up!!
We did a fun eco tour by boat, saw lots of wildlife, including two differents species of monkey. Gorgeous. Guide was also passionate and informative.
We went down the river and saw crocodiles, monkeys, birds, bats and iguana. It was great!
A lot of different hiking trails available, mosquitos are not as bad as people make it seem to be. Im sure later in the evening it is worse, so go early! The boat tours were not operational when I went, I think you need to book with a private company.Lots of wildlife: iguanas, cappuchin monkeys, many different birds.$13.65 US entry for non locals. The roads are also not that bad, Ive seen a lot worse. Just drive carefully on the rockier sections. 4x4 isnt necessary but always useful.
Remote location makes for few visitors. I stayed here as a student in 1995. It was nice to see that its gotten even better over the years.
Very interesting wetland national park. We saw a lot of wildlife and the trails were well maintained. Not very touristy (I think we were alone in the park!Bring your bug spray and look our for crocodiles! We went all the way to the Tempisque river, such a calming hike.
It is a beautiful place to be visit, you can see many birds and animals. Important to use sun protector and mosquito repellent.
Amazing place. Saw deers, birds, frogs and reptiles on a flash visit. Looking forward to cime back!
Excellent river tour!
Highlight of Costa Rica. Awesome nature, tons of crocodiles and pretty birds. The sunset is beautiful here!
Amazing place, quite and relaxed, almost no people around, just great wetland nature. Many birds! don’t miss the sunset on the bridge! We stayed for one night and had a boat tour in the morning, everything was great. Had a privet tour with a great guide (from the Palo verde station).
Very good place to see howler monkeys and alligators along with tropical birds. Wide range of iguanas. You can skip this place if you don’t like wild life and nature. If you do like wildlife and nature take the Pali Verde Boat Tours and don’t miss their lunch. It’s a traditional organic Costa Rican lunch served with hospitality that supersedes all hotels. Great place. pura Vida
We used Hacienda La Vieja Wetlands tour to go on the river and they were excellent. We went in December and there werent any mosquitos. Highly recommend the river boat trip. Saw monkeys, lizards, crocodiles, tropical birds.
Still holding on to traditional tour o the river. No feeding animals allowed here.
Wonderful place to see wildlife and great scenery
A must see! Alligators, monkeys, bats, rare birds all in natural habitat
Palo Verde has a river cruise. If you ever have an opportunity to take it you will not be disappointed. The river is alive with wildlife, crocodiles, Birds, lizards snakes. A naturalist dream come true..
Love this park! Not crowded.. bird migration in dec and Jan are spectacular!
Its hard to write a review of this place because in one hand you have beautiful nature, places to walk/hike around and great views; but in the other hand you have so many mosquitoes that will not leave you alone a second and will make you feel miserable! I recommend to go during January or so (when its very windy!so first confirm with the local station when is windy so you really enjoy it. The people is very nice, super friendly and the food is always delicious, however the infrastructure really need maintenance. The rooms and specially the bathrooms are very abandoned!
Saw so much wildlife, really fantastic.
The park is amazing, the tour was okay. We were only on the boys tour for about 40 minutes which wasnt enough time to see much, although we did see a fair amount. We were able to see bats, iguanas, monkeys, Jesus lizard, crocodiles, birds... The tour of the traditional (historicalsugar processing plantation was also interesting.
Very vast and beautiful park. Lots of trails and area to roam around. We felt we were the only ones as we didnt cross any other tourist. Nice for birds observation but we also met few dears, monkeys, crocodiles and lots of iguanas.Things to know: they dont have card machine so you need to pay in cash for the entrance and the next town, Bagaces, is 22 km away. Also, there is no restaurant/shop to buy food or drinks so you better come prepared!
Go and feel Costa Rica virgij & protected nature It is not ZOO but place with crocodiles swiming suntenting taking care about kids small crocodiles.
José knows his stuff. Lots of hiking trails. Interesting natural history. Just make sure to bring lots of bug spray. Our group of 4 went through a "family sized" can in one day.
This was an experience I will never forget. We were able to see 3 species of kingfisher. We saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, Crocs, heron, long nosed bats, and so much more. The guide we had, Ira with Nexus tours, was very knowledgeable and if she didnt have an answer she would dig into her books and find it for us. Highly recommend checking this place out.
Really beautiful park, unfortunately when we were there it was a high amount of mosquitos so we couldnt hike many of the trails. Did get some great photos of monkeys and Cuaties though!
Beautiful park with some trails. The walk up the La Roca trail was short and the Vista view from there was beautiful. We were there mid-day so didnt see many birds but got to see some iguanas and a white-nose coati.
Good place for hiking and bird watching. Lots of white face monkeys.
Great place to admire dozens of different types of birds, monkeys, iguanas, spiders .... The trip on the river Tempisque is really awesome.
Coco tourspicked us up at Occidental Papagayo Resort. Took 4 of us on a private boat trip .saw crocodiles ,monkeys and a wonderful authentic lunch afterwards. Very reasonableSafe company from Playa de coco(Coco beach)
One of the finest places in Costa Rica to see wildlife, very good!! In late March we saw over 20 crocodiles, lots of iguanas, basilisks, tiger herons, bats, white faced monkeys, lots of other birds and a turtle!Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses and your camera. Our kids enjoyed using binoculars to see the animals, you might want to consider that as well!
Amazing park! The trails are some of the best Ive ever been on. The park staff is SO FRIENDLY. They deserve all the praise in the world! Make sure you buy one of the necklaces from the cook.. he makes them himself and they are beautiful.
A great nature park with plenty of wildlife, great views and dense forest. Several trails, with lookout points, and plenty of roads throughout the park to see everything. In addition, there is a paid boat tour available at the far side of the park, with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. On our 80 minute tour we saw alligators, green herons, iguanas and monkeys. Highly recommend paying this park a visit.
One of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful and very good accessible by car.Be aware you have to drive back (despite on the map it look like you can exit at the end of the trail). The park closes at 16:00. So calculate that in.
A great place to visit and see wildlife in Guanacaste. We picked it because of the relatively proximity to the resort we stayed at (~2 hour drive). The tour guide, from Swiss Travel, and boat ride was very enjoyable and gave us access that we normally would not have. Rodrigo was knowledgeable of the wildlife and history of Costa Rica. I was amazed by all the topics he covered on the ride to and from Palo Verde. It was definitely a great educational experience for my kids too.
We stayed at the Biological Station. The area is a dry deciduous forest. When we went near the end of March, the temperatures hovered around 100 degrees F. There is a beautiful wetland nearby that you can walk out into (but be careful of the crocodiles! We saw one feeding one morning when we went out on the dock to watch the sunrise. It was far enough away that we felt safe, but close enough to get a decent video. We also saw horses that appeared wild, but they probably werent. There were also ctenosaurs (black iguanas), howler monkeys, white faced Capuchins (most near the mango grove), and spider monkeys, as well as coati, peccaries, and lots of cool insects!
The drive out there was beautiful. We took the boat tour which wasnt that exciting, but still fun. Climbing to the top of the mountain on hike #5 was an excellent 360 view!
It was a great visit. Saw all the animals.
We drove ourselves and found the place!! The boat excursion was very good as got some great pictures of Iguanas , White face Capucians and lots of Crocodiles. Worth the trip to see.
