Castle & former fortress offering scenic views from the hilltop, plus souvenir shops & a museum.
Beautiful place to touch history, culture, relax and think
Amazing place, you can find it romantic and majestic at the same timeA lot of interesting locations, sadly its Covid pandemic, so we werent able to enter each exposition, but a lot of them were opened. Highly recommend for visiting
Beautiful, well-preserved castle. Amazing views from the top. If you are really into history and fortress engineering I recommend taking a guided tour (300 UAH as of February 2022), ask at a cashdesk. Prepare your vaccination certificate, will be asked before entrance. In the castle there are some interesting exhibitions: historical, small arsenal, torture chamber, picture gallery. Also small souvenir shop (nothing fancy), small cafe with coffee and local wines, public WC - neat and clean.
Best castle in Ukraine. No caps! You won’t find any better castle in entire Ukraine. Pleasant guide tour, revitalized buildings and brilliant view onto Mukachevo city. Fond of Palanok castle.
Wow. A must visit! Gorgeous castle dating back almost a thousand years (with changes over timeand stunning views of the surrounding country and Eastern Carpathians. If you do one thing in Mukacheve, do this.
It was nice overall, you can learn about history, legends and have a view over the town of Mukachevo. The only issue is that more than half of the museums were closed as usual. You have the opportunity to get a tour guide and some souvenirs. Also, its a good idea to visit the castle 🏰 for the night view of the town, the castle closes at 5pm.
Fantastic castle in the area. Has a great history behind. Hungarian history in Ukraine
Great experience full of history. Got there early, an hour or so later was packed. So I was happy to get the place to "myself" for a little there. Very interesting exhibitions and great views over the city.
Quite interesting castle. Unfortunately, many of the exhibitions were closed for visiting.
Fantastic place! Big castle to explore with a lot of history and great views of the city. A torture chamber to explore the evils of humanity while sipping on mulled wine. My only critique would be that instead of hosting a few modern art galleries in some of the wings of the castle they should recreate the rooms with how the room world have looked at certain time periods with furniture, etc. No one wants to see modern art in a castle.
Great castle even if you visit it early morning when its closed))
This place is not pet friendly.I drove 200 km to visit it. But staff didnt allow me to go with a dog.Plus! We have a quarantine now, but staff doesnt wear a mask!Сотрудники не соблюдают карантинные предписания!
I loved visiting it after many years. I loved the structure of it and the local legend about Ilona Zrini. The whole Transcarpathia feels like a little hidden heaven in Ukraine.
History always had a dark side to itself and this castle is not less than any other. The castle was build for sake of love but the Queen left the castle and ended up in church too clean up after the ceremonies and Sunday gatherings. Not like castles you will find in England and Europe.
The castle looks tremendous as when you are approximating it, as when you are inside!
Castle is really cool. Would be nice to let people explore all secret rooms and paths.
One of the best castles in Ukraine. Very cosy and romantic locations, great view, ancient touch
Great view on Mukachevo. I had a guided tour here a couple of years ago (and I strongly recommend itand I came here once again cause it’s a wonderful place to explore.
Awesome place - history, view and atmosphere❤️
Nice castle in Mukachevo. Easy to get, easy to find parking. Is in good shape, new rooms and expositions open from year to year
The Palanok Castle or Mukachevo Castle is a historic castle in the city of Mukacheve in the western Ukrainian oblast (provinceof Zakarpattia. The Palanok Castle is delicately preserved, and is located on a former 68 metre high volcanic hill. The castle complex consists of three parts: the high, middle, and low castle.
Excellent chance to see an old castle with great views of the surrounding area.
A very interesting place that has a lot of history. The guide explained things well and the castle itself is unique and beautiful. Would recommend visiting if youre near the area and like old architecture.
I like this place! Very beautiful medieval castle in Mukachevo. There are many sightseeings in this castle. Many tourists visit it. You can take wonderful photos, buy some sovenirs, listen to interesting stories about history of the persons, with their legends in this castle. I hope to visit it again!
Great place. A lot of observation decks. Inside of the castle you can see exposition with torture objects, old well, art gallery, animals hide and ither expositions connected with history if the castle
Simply amazing castle! I enjoyed immensely exploring every bit of it I could. The views are enchanting, one can just imagine how life a few centuries ago looked like.I’m admiring the staff’s attitude too - you only have to pay for the entrance (and for a guide, if you like), there are no extra charges of any kind once you are in. Btw, there is drinkable water pumped from the well - just the thing in the hot summer!
Very cool place. Has plenty of potential. Many of the exhibits were closed for remodeling.
Im satisfied for spending time here. Very nice historical place. Amazing view. Interesting legend of its well
A very special place. My kid loved it. Everything is cheap accessible and you actually dont even need a guyed to tour the castle. The cafe there is also quite nice. It is very cheap and tasty at the same time. A small bat that lives there is just hilarious and kids love it. Excellent spot for the weekend trip.
Cost 50 UAH which was reasonable and had many small exertions inside. Nice view of surrounding areas. Good for an hour or two visit.
Nice historic place and nive view
Very well maintaned castle, may be one of the most beautifull castles in Ukraine. Astonishing views on the Mukachevo city. Historical expositions of old furniture, war ammunition and torture room. Sure exposition is not as large as in medeival cities in Europe. But worth to visit and see.
Amazing! Nice sightseeing place. A lot of different rooms and museums inside. Great views from the hight mountain. However, its really hard to get there. You have to hike up there.
Despite the great view from the bastions, which is somewhat compromised by the ugly post-soviet outskirts of Mukachevo, the castle is not very interesting. The museum expositions are about marginal and mostly unimportant historical figures and the only really interesting event from the castles history, the 3 year long siege during the Kuruc war, is completely glanced over. Definitely not worth the trip. Also the city of Mukachevo itself is unimpressive and boring.
Probably the most developed castle-museum in Zakarpatska oblast.
Very nice and interesting location. Great view over Mukachevo
Nice castle, lot of potential but when we went there many exposition were closed. The presence of some signs, explaining what you were seeing, wouldnt hurt anyone.Worth to visit, but can be better.
Beautiful place with long history.
Amazing view and history lesson from our guide Tatiana. Incredible place with intriguing wine cellar.
Every turist have to visit this! You can get there by bus number 3 from Center. Just for 1€ you can buy ticket to the castle and visit many galleries and exhibition with nice views!
Very well preserved, however many doors remain closed and there is a feeling that castle mostly is empty (most rooms do not have expositions or other content). Pretty nice place to visit and climb on, good for a small daily trip.
14th century never looked so good. This castle built centuries ago is a centre of attention and attraction for tourists visiting mucahevo from all over the world. It speaks to you as you move from the outer castle to the middle and the highest castle. At the highest castle you can see the wonderful view of the city. Most monuments in the castle have English translations also.
Maybe the best old Castle in Ukraine.
One of the biggest castles in Ukraine with interesting history and strategic location. The adult entrance costs 40 UAH (1,3 EUR), there are 5 museum halls inside, but the exponents are old and not very interesting. There is a picturesque restourant and wine cellar, a couple souvenir shops. The historic spirit inside is unforgettable. Local taxi is cheap if you order it by phone.
The second star goes for a spectacular view from the castle. Otherwise, the pompous title of Historical museum on the receipt will leave you with nothing but a breeze. Half of the castle is closed to the public: just imagine that the Knights Hall is closed (at the Medieval Castle), the three castle guns inside the castle are pointed at the inner wall, no information of any kind for those wandering without a guide (just come inside, look around and that is it). That was such a waste of money! People from all over Europe come there to see the ruins of the stolen glory.
Impressive castle location. Its builded on the hill nearby of Mukachevo city. There could take an amazing photos on castles terraces.
Im from New York but originally was born in Mukachevo, immigrated when I was young. Had a chance to visit the castle in summer and winter. Both times had an excellent time. View of the city is great, also view of the Carpathian mountains. Plenty of history to learn while walking throughout the castle. Also I love Mukachevo because its a small city and lots of cafes and restaurants where the food is always delicious. Ive visited Mukachevo 3 times since 2015 and all the times Ive been there for a month, never wanting to leave but of course had to return to NYC because of work......Visit Mukachevo and the Polanok castle, you wont regret........
This castle is, without doubts, among the most interesting places in Ukraine. It seems to be always crowded above average — even when it is a cold and rainy autumn day, buses full of people still arrive to the bottom of the hill, each visitor complete with a plastic raincoat. After literally squeezing through the incredibly narrow crowded entrance, one will finally get inside the beautiful skeleton of a castle. Beautiful but not alive, it creates the impression of a fully gutted being, where seldom galleries, silly souvenir shops and soulless museum rooms just do not stick to the bare bones. One could pay for a guide, who will then lead the group through the stairs, enthusiastically telling a much simplified fairy-tale based on the castles part in the humankinds game of thrones. The best way to visit this castle is not taking guides, taking your own tea or coffee with you, and staying for some minutes at high balconies of the castle, watching the dull town sceneries from the old walls while checking out corresponding Wikipedia articles.
This historical monument is no comparison! The most beautiful view of the castle is at the entrance to the city from the Beregova.
Very nice castle. High on a mountain top of Muchacevo. Great overview over the city of Muchacevo.Parking space at the top at the castle is small. So better park earlier. Also there are some little shops at the castle.
