Parque del Retiro, Paseo Venezuela, 2, 28001 Madrid, Spain, City Center
Built 1881–1883, this restored neoclassical building houses rotating exhibits of contemporary art.
Beautiful full of History and amazing art.
Lovely place to spend some time. You can enjoy a walk in the park, explore the exhibition that changes from time to time or spend lazy time in the sun. There are several places to buy snacks or drinks.Very good place to spend time with the kids
This free art gallery, with excellent aircon, displays temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Designed by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, who also created the nearby Crystal Palace, the building is worth a closer look, as well as the art. It’s a cool (in both senses of the wordplace to walk around and has nice loos!
Modern art, depends on your tastes. Architecture is nice. It is free. Only problem is the long line for a toilet.
Always great exhibits in this space.
Small museum with free entrance within the Park. Good AC inside, perfect stop after a walk outside if its too hot/cold. There are some timed exhibitions, mostly interesting paintings. Nice building inside and outside as well.
Stunning architectural landmark housing a modern museum and a great exhibit of modern mixed media artwork. We loved it so much !
Its very open and airy inside (and air conditioned!but its also "restored" in the same sense that an anatomical skeleton is. Cool place, dont go expecting a palace.
Beautiful art and place. Very calm. I recommend to visit it! And it was free.
nice Place! but the Velázques Palace is closed today 😕 the weather is quite good, i think it‘s not because of this?!
It was free entry so can’t complain, but it’s just loads of random contemporary art put together. If you’re “Arty” you’ll probably love it.
It had a good exhibition by Vivian Sulter plenty colours and materials as you can see
very beautiful!
Classic decorated building from the outside and modern looking inside. Nice exhibition.
Velazquez Palace (Palacio de velazquezis another palace located inside the "Retiro Park" (El parque del Retiroand it is also free as the Cristal Palace and the entrance ro the park, they are all free. This place looks more like an Art Center than a Palace, in my opinion. This palace is not big at all, high ceiling, tall walls and natural light. They currently have an exhibition of Susan Suter Art, very interesting and you have nothing to lose since it is located inside the park and it is free.
Great building for exhibitions. Great location. Didnt enjoy the Vivian Suter exhibition. Free admission and toilet.
Really not much to this place. It seems to be simply a display hall. I wouldnt go out of my way to visit it unless you wanted to see whatever was being displayed.
Building is beautiful, exhibitions are..well, not too inspiring (depends on a taste). However, it is free.
A smaller, but interesting museum to visit for free while in El Retiro Park.
Free art gallery in the huge Parque Retiro in Madrid. A stroll from the Prada. Free entrance.
It was free to get inand see the exhibition, so you can not complain
Nice building with impressive spaces inside. There is an art gallery inside. Entrance is for free!
Palacio de Velázquez is a wonderful, airy and truly beautiful space to exhibit art in the middle of the Retiro Park. Whether you like the art on display or not depends on the time that you visit. If youre lucky, your visit will coincide with the exhibit of an artist that you will appreciate. But even if the exhibited art is not your cup of tea, go in and see the space. Its free.
Sadly, I couldnt visit any exhibition but the architecture is gorgeous.
Originally known as the Palacio de la Minería, it was built in 1881-3 for the Exposición Nacional de Minería by architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco (and named after him), engineer Alberto Palacio, and ceramist Daniel Zuloaga.(Wiki..). Its a hub of art and culture.
Located inside Retiro park. A good subtle visit. Good art.
I visited the Palacio de Velázquez during an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Tetsuya Ishida. Much of the work seems to focus around the de-humanising automation of modern work (because breaking you back working in a field was better?). I loved the way the works invoked a feeling despair by workers struggling to adapt to social and technological changes in contemporary life and working demands.A fantastic exhibition. The building itself is also worth seeing for its mix of Neo-Classical and Neo-Mudejar, with its lovely polychromic brickwork and especially two winged lions at the entrance.
If you go for a walk inside "el retiro" park, this is maybe the main stop, as well as its sibling, "Palacio de cristal". Bes of it is on its outside. The feature of the palace is its architecture rather than its content. You wont miss anything big if you cant go inside unless you are a big fan of any forum of modern art.
Big palace with some important exhibitions
Free entrance, great exibit
If you read my post on Palacio de Cristal, it is pretty much ditto for this place and this park as a whole!
If you have a long layover in Madrid, I would recommend this museum. We all enjoyed it.
This is an extension of the Reina Sofia museum in the giant Retiro park, offering rotating contemporary art exhibitions. Unlike the main museum building, admission is free.
A Place to take a stroll and enjoy a free exhibition of art
Superb exhibition of paintings by Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida. Very personal work of expressionless people entrapped by various aspects of modern life. Images of solitude, his subjects are dehumanised and become part of the technological landscape.
We visited the exposition of Tetsuya Ishida (Japanese artists). Only paintings. It was really interesting; kind of creepy, perturbed but cool. Access is free. The space was not too big, just one floor. Spacious and not many people so it was easy to walk around to appreciate the paintings.I believe it was open until 22.00 on a Saturday.
I went to see paintings by the Japanese modern artist Tetsuya Ishida. It wasnt crowded so much for Sunday afternoon and it was a great exhibition. A rare opportunity to see his works in Europe.
The 2 pavilions in Retiro Park: the Palacio de Velázquez and the close Palacio de Cristal are the temporary exhibition spaces of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.So if someone is not amazed by the beautiful architecture of these pavilions, and their fantastic setting in the park (especially for the cristal palace- the well curated exhibitions might do the job. It is a great experience to transfer between the natural environment of the park and realm of the arts, forth and back. The entry is free into both pavilions, and after the exhibitions coffee or ice-cream is close by in the neighbouring café.
Very beautiful exterior, although the interior is whitewashed and bland. Admission is free and there is one unisex bathroom (often with a long line). There are rotating art exhibits in the interior of the building.
It’s a shame that the caliber of the exhibition working doesn’t align with the marvellous architecture of this building. Admittedly, it is a free exhibition but this space has so much more potential considering that some of the tile work on its facade is absolutely lovely. A saving grace is that this museum is quieter than any other in Madrid as it doesn’t seem to be on the tourist list despite being so close to other sites which are absolutely packed
Palacio de Velázquez is an exhibition hall located just south of the lake in Parque Del Retiro. This is a 19th century covered pavilion designed by architect, Ricardo Velazquez Bosco, for whom the building takes name. The building was originally constructed for the National Exhibition for Mining, Metals, Ceramics, Glass and Mineral Waters Industries in 1884. Afterwards, it continued to host overseas exhibits.Today it is organised and operated as an extension of Museo Reina Sofia, hosting contemporary arts and related exhibitions. Opening hours are 11am to 8pm during summer. Check their website for exact hours at other times of the year.Architecturally, Palacio de Velázquez is an attractive building to see as well. This is a red brick and tile structure. However, Velázquez made use iron and glass as well, allowing in natural light to illuminate the interior. He also decorated the outer walls with colourful ceramic patterns which are interesting to see and worth a few clicks from your camera.Note: Not far from this location you can also view the Palacio de Cristal building which Velázquez designed in 1888, as a replica of Londons Crystal Palace (from the Great Exhibition of 1851). This is another very attractive building well worth seeing if you enjoy architecture or seeing historical structures during your travels.
Great architecture masterpiece. The exterior its especially interesting. The effect of those "azulejos", small pieces of ceramic forming big mosaics is striking and look special (for me personal).
More of a gallery than a museum. The building itself is very beautiful, though I cant tell about exhibitions - they change
The most amazing exhibition space for contemporary art.
Queen Sofias art gallery offer free admission exhibitions around the year.
Great free collections that rotate frequently. Right in the heart of the beautiful Retiro Park, the jewel of Madrid.
This was a wonderful space which is well maintained. The exhibitions on display were modern and visually appeasing, however, there was no further information offered on the pieces offered. The only staff in the building were the security, and when my mother and I asked for futher information he replied "solo el seguridad, no se de estas cosas y la realidad es que ni me interesan" translation: I am just the security, i dont know about these and the reality is that they are of no interest to me.... We were a bit shocked at this reply. Shortly after he recommended that we visit another museum in the park, Casa de Vacas, where there was a colourful acrylic exhibition which he expressed that he was fond of.
At the time we went, the exhibition on display was of the works of Franz Erhard Walther. While the exhibition wasnt necessarily for my tastes, the building itself is great to showcase works of art such as the one on display. The building is located inside the park. It has air conditioning which is an amazing break from the blazing heat. The staff there were all nice and for those who need it, there is a bathroom there too.The most amazing part of our trip to this location though was the local artist posted just outside the entrance of the building. His name is Yonathan and he has many local pieces of art for sale should you be interested. My wife and I bought a few of his pieces during our trip and would highly recommend them to others. However, the highlight of Yonathan was not just his artwork but he is one of the most friendliest, nice individuals to talk to. He has many great tips for visitors and has a great story to tell should you be interested. Definitely recommend talking a moment to speak with him!
Fantastic looking building with free admission and very powerful air conditioning for a warm day. Exhibition was so so. Plenty of staff looking bored.
Great air conditioning, good exterior, but the exhibit (true at 14th Aug 2016was just a series of pictures of text spread thinly around the large interior.
