227 Argent St, Broken Hill NSW 2880, Australia, Broken Hill
Built as a coffee house in 1889, this eclectic hotel featured in the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It's a 7-minute walk from Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery.Lodging options range from simple bunk dorms to kitschy 2-bedroom suites. Some have shared bathroom facilities; upgraded rooms and suites may include balconies, en suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and/or minifridges. Themed suites have wall and ceiling murals. Wi-Fi is available (fee). There's a colourful restaurant/bar with a balcony, as well as off-street parking (fee). The property is renowned for its quirky, landscaped-themed murals.
Where else would you stay when visiting Broken Hill. The room didnt disappoint
On my last night in BH we decided to come here for dinner given there was so much hype. I wholeheartedly regret this decision. The restaurant was utterly disappointing in every aspect - the service, the warm tap water that was put on the table, the decor is highly outdated and unkempt, parts of the roof were held together with zip ties and other parts were falling down. The wax paper laid on our table was very unappealing to the eye and slid every time I moved. We ordered the “ crispy roasted pork belly “ it came out almost an hour later which I’m ok with if the food is worth the wait. This came out with undercooked bland veggies, packet mash potatoes with no flavour and the pork was rock hard at the base that I had chipped my back tooth on it. I initially thought it was bone then realised it was the “meat” the crispy crackle I was expecting was simply chewy and slight crisp on the corners. The meat was dry and unenjoyable. This high priced meal was ok to look at but I would never recommend it to anybody who has tastebuds and standards with their food. When we raised our concerns with the wait staff upon paying we were told “ oh, yeah they just must of been under the pump” no apologies for the bad experience. This place need a lot of work done to it and if that’s done then I’m sure it would be a great place but unfortunately they seem to be living off the notoriety from the film being made there.
Stayed for a week for work and was shocked at the state of the place. The room was filthy and had clearly not been cleaned to an acceptable standard. The bed sheets we’re riddled with something as I woke up covered in bites. The communal bathroom wasn’t cleaned the whole time I was there. Towels left on the floors and soap bars all over the cubicles. No amount of movie novelty can make up for the state of the place and lack of care by the ownership.Had a decent snitty though to be fair!
It was a great respite after camping in the Simpson Desert in the middle of winter for a couple of weeks.I was hoping our balcony-facing room would be as interesting as the foyer and the Priscilla room but it wasn’t.The views of Broken Hill from the balcony was worth the extra money we paid for the privilege. But the noise from the street did carry upstairs as the party revellers left for the evening. The pub had fab meals…it was nice to feel civilised and get dressed up for dinner after our outback adventure.
Enjoyed the festival weekend. Very friendly, helpful staff. Hotel has lots of character.
Very slow service and it had been ordered ahead by tour bus. Disappointing that there was not more attention to a group booking if 37. Place was not packed either.
A grand old lady that is tired and showing its age... I have mobility issues but was told with great enthusiasm that we (partner and Iwere in a newly renovated room, up 2 little steps to a small side hallway. The room at first sight was elegant as was the bathroom... But! ☹️
Didnt stay at the hotel but ate there most of the time due to closeness to worksite. And I have to say, it has the best food/consistency Ive ever experienced. The steaks were delicious, sides were amazing. The sauces though is definitely the part that takes it to a new level. The depth of flavour in them is above and beyond. Staff service is great too, always friendly and open, will try to help with things, make suggestions etc. Legit would say its worth an interstate trip just for the food alone.
The place to be when you are going to the Broken Heels festival. Spent a lot of time on the balcony. 😍 Thank you, loved my stay here.
Fun place to be food and drink were great the karaoke night was a lot of fun. In sept they have a drag show weekend but sadly we left the day before but the hole town gets into it
Pleasant experience, I enjoyed the pasta from the pub lunch.
Had an excellent meal 🥘 thereFood is good 👍- decore well1960s with brown Kraft paper ta blue cloths
Great pub for a quick drink friendly staff cold beer
The team has been very friendly and the food was good
Came for dinner and waited over 1hr for a Mexican parmi and schnitzel. Informed staff that it’s been over an hour and they said the system had been playing up all night yet a lot of people had received their meals after we had ordered ours. When we finally received our meals the Mexican parmi was very dark on top also dry and no sour cream like it stated on the menu. When I went to pay I told the waitress about what happened and I get told that their system doesn’t let you take meals off the bill and I had to pay the full amount and have to come back tomorrow when the office is open to get a refund?? What hospitality establishment does this?Wouldn’t go back again for a meal that’s for sure.
Did not stay in accommodation. Had dinner in the restauant, was dissapointed. Grain fed rump was tough & chewy like Yak akaBraham. Vegs was the saviour, the Chicken Oscar was flooded in the sauce could not find the avocado.Over rated. Please teach your staff not to remove someone plate whilst the rest of us continue eating. Common in all dining places. Covid is not an excuse.
So it seems that staff can play with cutlery and drop it on the floor and put it back for customers to use not knowing!!!! Certainly won’t be eating here. Kia Ora girlie 🤮 🦠 🤮 🦠
Its pub grub and not bad. But a ser charge on your card is a but rich.
What a great piece of history. Great to sit in and have a beverage
Quaint and comfortable but in need of refresh. Everything was clean. Bathrooms very dated but that’s part of being in a historic building. Price very good so didn’t expect modern luxury. Restaurant attached was ok, food decent.
Food was great and atmosphere was as expected as per Prescilla. However, customer service was extremely poor, my family and our friends were spoken to in a rubbish manner by the poney tailed bar staff. Unable to play the jukebox as it was too loud? Why have it on? Kids were ushered out of the bar even though it was the only way through from the front doors! Cant sit here, cant do that! Hardly the appropriate attitude for a sunday lunch at the pub! Utterly a sub par experience and will not return.P#$% poor customer service.
Service was slow.. price for a parmi was expensive. Well over $30. Considering you can get the same in melbourne for $24 to $26 and dont need to add extra toppings..
We stayed for one night... I reviewed the website and contacted the venue - we booked a "Family Room" and was advised it was the only one that could accommodate us - queen bed, set of bunks, shared bathroom. We arrived late, picked up our keys from the bar, and went to our room. The room was anything but a family room! no heating, freezing cold, no towels, bedding was a cotton sheet and light blanket, it smelt musty, lights didnt work - the Balcony Budget Room on the website presented better. After advising staff that it was nothing like what was presented on the website I was told "nothing ever looks like it does on a website does it?". We were given some alternative rooms and found one that was suitable and available - a queen bed, single bed, and trundle (after having been told they only had the room we were allocated that could accommodate us- we paid the difference in price and settled in for the night. We were put in room 106 which is the Standard Room with Ensuite on the website. The room was comfortable, warm, and well presented.I dont know why we werent offered the option of that room when we booked other than the fact we were only staying for one night. If traveling as a family check the room youre going to be given and avoid 225 - its more suited as backpacker accommodation at best.I have raised my concerns with the venue before writing this review but have received no reply
Stayed in the Priscilla suite for a couple nights for $710. The hotel is tired and needs a refurb and a very good clean. Ate at the bar (tried to get a restaurant seatbut couldn’t as it was fully booked. Did suggest they perhaps ask hotel guests if they want a booking in advance. The restaurant manager wasn’t particularly receptive to this idea and told me to take it up with the “guest manager”. The food was okay. Would def come back to Broken Hill wouldn’t stay again.
Great place. Nice dinner. Good music too.
Atmospheric.Friends and family from Mudgee came out and we hit the Palace for dinner. Quick excellent service with friendly knowledgeable staff showing the way with descriptive explanations of the menu. All seven absolutely delighted with their choices from the menu of fresh tasty food. Absolutely recommend the Palace for a meal and drink .
We didnt stay here but we were happy with our meal, the mixed mushroom rissoto was amazing, the staff were lovely and we enjoyed look around.
Its an absolute MECCA for Priscilla fans. I was absolutely tickled pink to be in this iconic pub where my favourite film was shot. The ode to the film, and the original artist, Gordon Waye, is beyond a tribute. Service and food is wonderful. But just being here, immersed in the "Priscilla" vibe, is beyond satisfying 👠👠👠🌟
Dinner at the Palace restaurant was excellent. The mixed mushroom risotto was delicious. The beef schnitzel was made with a nice thick slice of tender beef and generous in size. The accompanying chips were crispy and salad was good. A good lively atmosphere in the restaurant on a Monday night. Service was quick and efficient and prices reasonable.
Didnt stay in the hotel but had dinner the restaurant. Food was amazing and staff were helpful.
Shared a meal. Short staffed like everywhere. Good food in bistro
Like the rest of Broken Hill, my view is that this establishment is in decline and running on past reputation. Day time staff very lacking and food nothing special
Great venue. Spectacular interior. Good food. Friendly staff.
Quirky pub with very interesting history. Seen of course in principle queen of the desert movie. Heaps of murals. $2 in the box gets them all flood lit. Huge karaoke stage and auditorium. Unfortunately drag bingo discontinued.
Iconic Hotel that has seen better days. The whole place feels unloved and in need of a makeover. The rooms are shabby but cheap. The bathrooms are dirty but the hot water is great. Meals are okay... Ish. Pity it could be great
Top place....Ice cold beer....Great meals and all the history an old pub can give you....Staff were on top of their game....😁
Walked in... waited over 5 minutes at the bar behind another group of two people. No acknowledgment from staff members to either party. Not even to say "hi Ill be with you in a minute" ...walked out quickly followed by the couple in front. Zero service. Disappointing.
Great place to see the Priscilla memorabilia. Bar staff were fantastic with a nice spot to sit out the front. The food was great and an interesting souvenir shop on the corner. I heard from a fellow traveller the rooms were amazing but didnt stay there myself
Went in for some lunch. Iconic pub to take a look at, friendly staff, but the pie of the day was more like leftover reheated pie of last week. Worst bit of pub food I have ever been served. The schnitzel however was good, and we had some hot sides that were also good.
The restaurant meals were absolutely amazing, the best fillet Mignon I have had in over 15 years. Perfectly cooked and friendly service. Well done to the chefs.
Iconic pub with good food. Interesting wall mural to look at while there.
Designed by Melbourne architect Alfred Dunn, and originally opened on 18th December 1889 as the Broken Hill Coffee Palace, this establishment received its liquor license in 1892 and was renamed the Palace Hotel.Adorned with painted murals on the ceiling and walls, the hotel has preserved its unique and eclectic style. The full-fledged bar, restaurant and the 48 rooms add to its charm. The 1994 Australian comedy-drama film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, filmed many of its Broken Hill scenes in the Palace Hotel. On 2nd April 1999, the Palace Hotel was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.I enjoyed my drink, meal, and the little chats I had with the welcoming barman and the sociable locals at the pub.
Had a couple of beers each night we were there. Mainly because of the wall and ceiling paintings. Great stuff! Very Broken Hill
Stay here for 1 night, temperature was 44 degrees outside and about the same inside. The air conditioning didnt work so it was an uncomfortable nights sleep. Carpet thread bare and the upstairs accommodation part very run down. Even the upstairs hallways where like an oven. Not cheap either $170 for the night. No food the restaurant wasnt open stayed 12th of Jan not sure why it was closed. Walked across the street to the Demo club had a nice steak there. Would visit for a beer but wouldnt stay there again.
The atmosphere and old world charm is superb. The service, the murals, the music etc etcThe bar lady introduced us to a locally sourced gin…Fosseys gin which has a variety of flavours. Forget pink gin try Fosseys, lime, rose, tea, salt bush & strawberry with lemonade and slice of lime. You won’t be disappointed.
I so wanted to visit this hotel as it was in the movie "Priscilla Queen of the desert", so interesting all the murals on the walls and the ceilings, go there for that not food, think they need a visit from Gordon Ramsey, but maybe it was just a bad day when I was there, you cant judge a place just from one visit.
That blonde staff with left arm tattoo.. she was so rough to us when we were called out if we checked in and asking for our vaccination… i mean she can ask us politely after we were standing outside for more than 5mins waited til someone will take us inside.Miss blonde tattoo, learn some manners and don’t be rude to your customers… being kind is free. She is very entitled as if who she is no word of “please” and or “thank you” If you are not happy to work, just leave then as you are bringing the hotel a bad name. But all other staff were so nice and very friendly… thank you so much to those staff who apologise in behalf of her.Would like to visit again though to see if she is still around. Hopefully not anymore.
Must visit legendary pub in Broken Hills main street. Has become famous for its appearances in Priscilla Queen of the Desert but is still an icon in its own right due to the magnificence of the building and its interior murals. The front bar is good for a drink and pub grub with the adjacent main restaurant has a top shelf menu but with a higher price tag. Photos are allowed inside but they prefer a gold coin donation.
Its a fantastic place to visit especially if youre a Priscilla fan!!!! We went on a Wednesday night which is karaoke night so be prepared to be patient (its busy!!!). I have to say the food was worth the wait. But it was quite a wait. Almost an hour to place an order and close to 90 minutes to get ur food. Like i said...... u gotta be patient 🤔
Was booked out the first night we were in Broken Hill so we booked for the next night and had a fantastic meal.Group of 4 and we had 2 x Chicken Oscar, Sicilian Pasta and Mushroom Risotto for mains and all the meals were fantastic. We followed up with Nut Sundae, Sticky Date Pudding and Afogato which again were all fantastic. You dont want to miss out on a meal here so remember to book ahead.
