5-3 Minamiyamatemachi, Nagasaki, 850-0931, Japan, Nagasaki
Stately, Western-style Catholic church built in 1865 & featuring stained glass & sculptures.
The church and its museum were good places to start visits for christianity in Nagasaki. The road leading to the church was full of stores which made me think of approaching a Buddhist temple instead of a former Catholic Church. No mass is held at the moment.
Nice spot to take photos outside, but I didn’t feel that it was totally worth going inside.
case closed by other country prefecturebut its usj harry potter
What a divine place to visit, first catholic church in Japan,Museum is must visit, a lot of history about christianity in Japan.
For me there isn’t much interesting to see. The ticket is 1000JPY, which is also a little bit expensive.
Inspiring church with a museum dedicated to the difficult history of Christianity in Japan.
Absolutely stunning and beautiful
Ridiculously overpriced. ¥1000 for a place of worship? The place isn’t even special. It will only take 5 minutes to see the whole thing. Skip!!
its place is house of God , we pray and praise here, keep its always holy like your body as temple of God inside your heart
Its such a beautiful historical Catholic Church. Its the oldest Christian Church that exsists in Japan and became a world heritage in 2018.I was still 14 when I visited the church for the first time.It is always breathtakingly beautiful and sacred.Official name is The Basilica of the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan. There were some sad histories there. They break my heart just thinking about them as a Catholic.Lots of Hidden Catholic came to this church and confessed their faith to priests. They had been keeping their faith in secret for almost 250 years, all throughout Japans long prohibition on Christianity. There is another historical building right next to the Church. It used to be a Seminary school which St. Maximilian Kolbe(Polish Franciscan frierestablished and was teaching some Seminarians in there in 1930s.Many Catholic literatures, documentary records and pictures are exhibited in there.
1000yen entrance fee to enter church is kinda steep. I hope they can make it free so non tourist can enter and pray
Didn’t go inside. Too high entrance fee (1000 JPY).
Overrated and overpriced.
nice church, but cant take picture of the inside.Quite expensive for the ticket (¥1,000)
wonderful
Too expensive
Ok
So pricey entrance fee. Does not worth it.
A good place to visit, learning quite extensively on Christian history at the local site in Japan.
Great place to visit. The Cathedral is stunning. Its also a great place to learn about the history of hidden Christians in Japan.
Not much to see with comparatively high entry fee. No photos allowed inside church & museum.
expensive
Admission fee is expensive
Not really interesting and very expensive for what you see... And to add, tought it was glover Garden entrance and paid 1000Y for this 😶
Apart from the historical importance itself, the building is not particularly significant (architecturally speaking). Besides its a 1000 yen ticket. Better take a picture from the outside.
The ticket fee is ¥1000, which is absurd. As with most historical churches in Japan, pictures are forbidden in the church interior. That being said, Oura Church is the oldest extant church in Japan. It is quite beautiful. It is dedicated to the 26 Martyrs of Japan, and a museum next to the church gives a brief overview of the tumultuous history of Christianity in Japan.Included with the ticket is a booklet giving a more detailed history of Christianity in Nagasaki.Oura Church is one of the most interesting and beautiful attractions in Nagasaki, but the price is shameful.
The entrance fee is 1000 yen, which is quite pricey, but do come here if you want to learn more about the history of Christianity in Japan! Theres a lot of interesting facts about the growth of Christianity and how that affects many aspects of Japanese culture. No need to worry about not being able to read Japanese, they provide a good and detailed brochure in English about this place, and related information regarding the subject around Nagasaki.
Way too expensive. Paying 1000 yen to enter a Church???! The exhibits are not very good. Go to Shimabara Castle to see real artifacts from the time and not just cardboard signs
We were blessed to celebrate Mass at the beautiful Oura Church on the 4th if July. This is the oldest church in Japan and recently recognized as a World Cultural Site. Such a wonderful experience.
I will admit, the entrance fee is expensive. It has been raised quite a bit since 2015, but overall I still enjoyed coming to this church. If you know the history of the Nagasakis catholics, this church has huge cultural signifigance. The courtyard beneath the church is very nice as well. Its a literally a japanese garden with catholic accents.
Must visit.
¥600 to enter a Catholic Church. Not worth the money unless you are Catholic.
Outrageous charge of US$7 to get into a very mediocre church. Would never consider contributing to this organisation that has institutionalised child abuse !
The Cathedral is now under renovation so i wasnt able to go inside but outside was still ok. They still accept visitors though even its undergoing renovation. There is an entrance fee to visit the church.
The oldest church in Nagasaki built in 1965 as dedication to 26 martyrs of Japan. A beautiful exterior with very much european style. It has the statue of Our Lady of Japan in front of the church. Wooden dominating interior adds the sacred feeling. Its an old painting of 26 martyrs being crucified in one side of the altar. It survived the atomic bomb blast with very much eveeything in tact except for the window glasses.
A short stop coming down from Glover Garden. Its very nice and quiet there. Theres an entrance fee to enter.
Not worth the 600 yen entrance fee at all. Extremely small with very limited stained glass windows. Exterior was under construction. Street to and from the "cathedral" filled with tourist shops.
a very important history of the city. the walk up to the church is more interesting than the church itself.
Interesting from outside only. Not worthy to pay the entrance fee. Interesting for people who doesnt know about catholicism.
Just took a photo outside. Mightnt be worth the money for some people.
I would suggest to skip this place and just have a look at the images: the entry fee of 600 ¥ for a visit that takes approximately 10 minutes and includes a small guide/ flyer with further information is quite expensive. In front of the church you will find a small garden with a pond and some statues. You wont find anything special in the church itself if you have seen a catholic church before.
“Great old church”Lots of history in this old church, in 1981 Pope John Paul visited and after which a bust of his holiness was displayed near a beautiful pond, its a great old church that has been around for about 150 years.
Nice gothic chapel, cant take any photographs within the church
Its a bit expensive for the entry
very first visit to a catholic church here in japan i was in tears reading the history of the place.
Too expensive entrance fee, cheesy atmosphere.
It is expensive and there is not much to see if you compare it with European churches. Nevertheless, the story of the church is very interesting and of the people who run it as well as the contrast of christian images with japanese kanjis and culture.
Historical and beautiful
Much smaller than I thought it would be, but it leaves quite an impression of the beginnings of Catholicism back in its day. Its already been 150 years! (as of this writing)
pay to go in and around a church ? good enough to see from the outside
