Wat Ounalom, Ly Yoat Lay St. (172), Phnom Penh 12000, Cambodia, Phnom Penh
Monumental Buddhist temple compound, opened in 1443, featuring elaborate stupas & a monastery.
The complex has a book store too. Some of which are printed in English. They answer basic questions about the Buddhist ideologies which is like Buddhism 101 for non-buddhists. The temple shrine is especially beautiful because of the symmetrically placed multiple status of Buddha and the overall decoration of the space.
Home of the Supreme Patriarch of the Mahanikaya sect of Cambodian Buddhism. Behind the Vihara is a modified Angkorian Era which now looks like Chedi.
I wish it could be more refined and delicate.
Lovely pagoda in the heart of the City. But a bit noisy with lots of construction. Not very many signs telling or describing the history. But at least it’s free.
Like the nearby Saravoan Techo Pagoda, this place is under renovation as of February 2020, but its still far more enjoyable than the aforementioned place. However, the main building is out of order, and apparently visitors are not welcome in any of the smaller buildings.I made that discovery once I came across a smaller building with shrine and cushions. I meditated there, and then was discouraged from being present by some local people who seemingly occupy or work on the upper floor of the building.Right now if you want to meditate peacefully at a temple in Phnom Penh, your best bet is to go to Wat Botum or perhaps Wat Lanka. This city simply doesnt compare to Bangkok when it comes to having a large quantity of temples - especially ones that are operational, not undergoing renovation, and open to visitors.
Beautiful pagoda and statues. Its a complex of several buildings.
Impressive colorful temple
Place to chat with da many and the ones pass, say hello or give update...to your people in the other side...granted you catch da Buddha listening pass your message on or give a helping guidance ... This is the land of 7/24 praying...
A very beautiful pagoda complex near a market, you’d be satisfied even if you’re just strolling around because it is quite big and has many stupas. You can get in and around for free. I’ve met a boy who sells bracelets which were made by the monks (he said so). The boy was very friendly and able to speak english well. We played with a temple dog named Apil. I think this site is a must visit when you’re in Phnom Penh!
Located near riverside consists if buddhist temple and stupas where ash of dead are stored. Nice architecture and could see some peacock too.
Nice temple but not worth going to see this only. It is fine if it is a part of a tour.
Dont know the history but its a nice pagoda to visit, very picturesque, you can also have one of the monks there pray for you and you may donate at the end.
A famous pagoda in the town. The bone of the famous CAMBODIAN monk who published the 1st Khmer dictionary is being kept there. It a little bit hard to find parking during the big religious event. I found a recycle cage for keeping the bottle there. Interestingly, the boy who live in the pagoda keep it for selling. That’s why there is no hole for throwing a plastic bottle into it. And some children look after your shoes when you go in. We have to pay them some tips when we leave.
Sitting on the capital’s riverside, Wat Ounalom is the HQ of Cambodian Buddhism, serving as the library of the Buddhist Institute in its early life. Founded in 1443, it is made up of 44 structures which recently underwent a make-over. A huge number of monks call the pagoda home, with the leader of the Kingdom’s Buddhist brotherhood living there. The pagoda was almost destroyed by the Khmer Rouge, who destroyed almost the 30,000 books in the library and murdered many of the 500 monks living there, including Huot Tat, the fourth patriarch of Cambodian Buddhism. A statue of him can be found on the second floor of the main building.
A lovely Wat by the Riverside. There r also some really nice statues and displays inside the grounds.
Nice , serne , beautiful.Make sure to wear clothes that cover up to your shoulders and knees.Photography prohibited in some areas.Do not touch or disturb a monk.
A peaceful Buddhist temple and monastery close to the royal palace this is well worth a visit
Lovely people and the place is amazing, there a childrens class in the morning where they teach buddhism as I think, and also English
Its a beautiful, widely pagoda next to the royal palace. Youll find peace and purity when walking around.
in another name call golden temple, It is very beautiful pagoda. When you enter the main gate on the right hand side there is a big cage for white and green peacocks.
I have to admit i was at peace when i sat quietly in the main hall looking at the beautiful painting and buddha statues without doing anything. Give it a try to see if you have the same peace moment like me☺
The best Buddhist temple for Sangaraja of Cambodia stayed in Phnom Penh
In between grand palace and ohana hotel
took a peaceful walk here.
A nice temple to have a walk around. I spent about 15 minutes and only went in as I happened to be passing. I would not make a specific journey just to visit. Some nice statues of Buddha and some nice architecture.
One of the many wats located in the city.
Beautiful holy place where there are many monks living around. The place is open and accessible to the public 24hrs a day. Also inside you can visit but out of respect you will have to take your shoes off. It is one of the larger temples in the area close to the royal palace.
One of the biggest and most famous temple in the city centre. Beware of some tout offering the same stories like I’ve been to your country before to gain your trust.
This Pagoda looks so nice view and it is in the opposite of the river and near Royal palace as well.
A holy place that dates back to before the French colonial area. This pagoda is the place where Cambodias greatest monk Choun Nath wrote the Khmer dictionary. It is one of the most beautiful pagoda out there and has also become a tourist attraction as well. This pagoda is marvelous and can be equivalent to Saint Pauls cathedral as well.
Free entry and its worth to see. You can go inside and pay the sacrifice for Buddha. A word of advice, the tuk-tuk driver around the temple is very annoying
Really nice temple. Entry is free and it’ s worth to see.
It is one of the old monasteries in the capital city of Cambodia. It was also a resident of one the most venerable Chuon Nath, Khmer literature scholar. A lot of Buddhist monk are living there.
We just couldn’t find the charm & the peace other people were talking about. It was more like a construction area. We also couldn’t see any structure dates couple of hundred years back.
Big Buddhist temple populated with many monks. The place has a nice energy even if the architecture is not much different from the other temples in the area
The temple is quite ok. But BEWARE OF THE TUK TUL DRIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They offer stg like an hr package to explore the city and i told him no, it’s ok I will walk. Then he start to explain about the things in temple, and i said it’s ok, we will walk around ourselve! But he keep on tagging along and eventually he asked us to take his ride to other places when we said no and walk out of temple he keep accusing us wasting his time?! Im like “what the heck?????” We told him earlier and eventually he asked tips from my bf. After my bf tips him and he said not enough that i have to start argue with all the nonsense that he did!!!!! Eventually I storm off because I am super angry and he stopped following us!!!!!!!!!!!
Fun fact: there is an ancient temple made from sandstone in the pagodas compound.Sad fact: they modified that ancient temple that it is almost impossible to recognise that it is an ancient temple. This pagoda is a wealthy pagoda. It house so many stupas of scholars and great Khmer people.Overall landscape: it is nice.
Okay place. The Wat looks nice from the outside but dont expect too much if youre a tourist. I had the feeling that they prefer people to come for prayers rather than visiting. No explaining signs or guides around. At the moment a third of the Wat is undergoing construction work.
It was also nice place for who love to see the Buddha statue inside of temple. There are many restaurants around here. But, it was unlucky for me that I came too early on morning. Because restaurants here open around 11 am.
Buddhist temple complex with lots of golden painting on statues, walls and decoration. Watch the nicely decorated floor also. This is one of Phnom Penhs oldest pagodas and with a particular location. Shooting pictures inside is allowed.
It’s Amazing Wat Ounalom located in Phnom Penh City of Cambodia.
It’s the first temple we visited in Phnom Penh. It was just refurbished with the golden painting on every tower and door. Looks amazing and with history background. Photography is allow to take inside.
Have new building construction in side pagoda
This is a nice little respite from the bustle of the capital. There are also vendors on the western most wall selling haircuts and drinks.
The oldest pagoda among other pagoda in Phnom Penh, and the stupas of the popular king of monk Samdach Chuon Nath rested here.
The oldest pagoda among other pagoda in Phnom Penh, and the stupas of the popular king of monk Samdach Chuon Nath rested here.
Quite rundown. I didnt find it interesting to visit at all. We walked around it and didnt get much out of the visit. Not a must-see.
A pagoda that stands out on the riverside among tourists bar and restaurant. Very nice.
Big Buddhist temple of the city where the monks are staying in.A place for religious celebration on Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben day
Considered as one among ancient pagodas in Cambodia. The creation was traced back to 15th century. One special things of this pagoda is the uniqueness of its structural building and comprising ancient temple. This historical landmark is highly recommended for tourists who wish to understand the culture and religion of Khmer people.
