Ottelia + Fodder - Restaurant in Penola, Australia
Recommend by a number of locals many of which have not yet made it there themselves. Food was excellent not large portions but not overly expensive so top marks from our group.
This place is seriously good… do yourself a favour!Burnt butter gnocchi and wood fired pizzas are elite.
We had received strong recommendations for this place. The fish was Extremely overcooked and dry. We also ordered the pork. I think the chef must have dropped a full container of salt in the sauce or else we offended one of the wait staff. I suggested somewhere else.
Lunch at Ottelia appears to be on nearly everyones list of places to go for lunch in the region. Theres probably a good reason for that - its fantastic, and fantastic value for money. Some of the dishes in the chefs menu we enjoyed on our visit would give better known regional restaurants (Im looking at you, Braea real run for their money. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were great, and the wine was good. What more could you ask for?
Fabulous lunch. Grazed through the small bites ending with the most amazing pizzas. Each small bite was perfection - beautifully presented. Roger is a delight....and entertaining!
Great spot in Coonawarra, we did the walking trail and had lunch half way. What an awesome stop off, food was sensational. Ricotta gnocchi and the steamed buns were the stand outs. Service was fast and all the staff were very friendly. Highly recommend
This place really lived up to the reviews we’d read, the pizzas were great, and the highlight was the chili chutney, which they don’t sell but definitely should. Staff were lovely and Roger is an absolute vibe and a lovely human. Would recommend for sure 10/10
Wonderful staff, fantastic wine and the food…. Amazing!!! We went with chef’s choice.
Delightful food! Great staff! Lovely wines
We had the chefs menu with paired wines and it was fantastic fine dining. The Thai style pork belly salad was a favourite.
This cozy, interesting and friendly cellar door restaurant is without doubt a hidden gem. Having spent a 2 hour long lunch sampling the wines and numerous dishes, I will be back. There are some strange partners on the plates and the Chef has an imaginative, bold and successful approach to his dishes, all presented with oodles of ‘WOW’I tried to dodge the Sourdough ice cream but was cajoled into trying it by the confident, informed and experienced Maître D. It was the right choice and a stunning culinary experience. If you’re driving by, don’t! Make sure you pay this place a visit before it starts getting booked out.
Fantastic wine tasting experience and great wines. It was a seated tasting experience and the wines were explained well. Wed eaten there before but hadnt made a booking this time so ended up having takeaway pizza and wine in the park next door which was actually fantastic - I would recommend if it is a nice day. Lovely staff.
Incredible wines, absolutely delicious food, fun and friendly staff. The Chefs feed me menu was well priced and a delight for the taste buds. Was caught licking the plate but no regrets.
There is something for everyone’s taste and budget here. The staff, Gabby, Melissa, and the chic gentleman, whose name I unfortunately cannot remember, are a hoot! They are knowledgeable about things to do around and the place, and have exquisite taste. Try the Graciano! It is so flavourful, from nose to finish, with a backbone worthy of any CrossFit champion. Sensational! Thank you for the great memories.
Had the chef’s choice ( aka feed mefor $65 per person.Good value for money. Extremely tasty with all courses hitting the spot. Would have been 6 stars if they included a glass of wine!Highly recommended
What an amazing place to stop for a meal. We had the wood fired pizza. Delicious.. next time the well be taking home some of their wood fired bread loaves. The food, the wine and the beautiful old building. Have to recommend.
Can’t believe they are ‘only’ rated 4.6. With a wheat allergy I’ve tried many many gluten free pizzas over the years and this was the best base of the lot. Traditional style, great toppings, even the little one was singing about her kids pizza.Must do if you are in the area. Soaks the wine up well.
Amazing food by chef Hugo Chang! His creativity and thoughtfulness have shone through each dish with beautiful presentation and well balanced but interesting flavours, showcasing fresh local produce! A must in Coonawarra!
Amazing long lunch, good wine, very friendly staff. Get the tomato salad (trust me!and hollowed out potato. Highly reccomend everything.
Great service, friendly and welcoming. The pizza was the best ever. Lovely atmosphere. Cant wait to go back.
We did the wine tasting and then lunch, everything was amazing. This place is the gem of Coonawarra. Great work!
Three for lunch, no booking, no problem, staff were great. Sydney siders who love eating out, were not disappointed. Very happy.
Had a great experience here. Staff accommodated us on short notice. The restaurant is beautiful and has delicious food. We had the burnt butter sage gnocchi and milk poached pork tortellini for mains. For dessert we went with the sourdough ice cream and miso sauce and the Shiraz Turkish delight. Turkish delight was amazing not too sweet either. Sourdough ice cream was really nice but would prefer a smoother texture to the miso. Would recommend Ottelia to anyone visiting the region!
There was initial confusion, because according to some local advice they were closed on Sunday. Fortunately, this proved to be wrong. We went there for lunch and had a great time. Jane looked after us and we called past later for a coffee as well. The pizza and chicken tortellini are great, but we got the impression that everything on the menu is pretty bloody edible. Hats off to all the staff - typical of Coonawarra, top-class folk.
Absolutely amazing food and service. We love this place. Have visited many times and always have our favourite dishes but today we went for the chef’s menu…..so worth it. Thankyou!
Beautiful place with a great atmosphere. All the staff were amazing - they were so attentive and pleasant even though it was clear they were very busy. Food was fantastic and beautifully presented. Great place to stop for lunch!
Look the food is delicious. Very savoury and flavourful. But be prepared the portions are tiny. $9 for one 2in anchovy “toast”. $17 for 10 pieces of gnocchi. My recommendation is just stick to the pizza. The wine was decent, the girl serving us (Gabbywas probs the best thing about the place!
The Best Food in Coonawarra Bar none.. Go just book and go
I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at this resturant. It is Tapas/sharing style with 2 dishes or one pizza being enough per person. I would highly recommend getting the bread and butter with the tomato salad and doing a DIY bruschetta. The photo is a small piece of the tomato salad.
For groups of 8 or more a booking is recommended. The pizzas here are divine! Think light, fluffy wood fired sour dough base with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The waiter who served us was lovely, very accommodating and knowledgeable of local places to visit. Would go back again to try the other options on the menu 🤗
We had their pescatarian "Feed me menu" for $60, well worth the money. The Riesling was outstanding and the service top notch. Only one small starter dish with fish in it, rest was vegetarian (even with plenty of notice). Very happy overall 👌
Group of 6 booked in for late lunch, so happy we did! We came here mostly for the pizza, which was probably the best Ive had outside of Italy. Pizza (no 5was awesome - were planning to go back for more. The rest of the dishes we had were also terrific, not the largest portions but none of left hungry. Desserts were a highlight, the Yoghurt syllabub being the favourite. We all enjoyed the food and wine here, thank you!
Beautifully set within a field of vineyards, choose the feed me option and let the chef woo you with an abundance of on and off menu dishes. A selection of wines you can’t go wrong with, I personally recommend a bottle of their Riesling to pair well with the foods. Lovely and attentive staff with local knowledge. Well worth the trip.
Well worth a visit. Eclectic menu, local wines, friendly service in pleasant surroundings. Pizza is authentic, wood oven, sour dough base with fresh and non traditional toppings. You wont regret a meal in this venue.
Ok, so you need to eat their gnocchi. I mean, the rest of the food is good, it’s great even. In fact you could have a solid lunch here without having the gnocchi and you’d be thoroughly satisfied. But you’d also be missing out. This summary is based off of several lunches as well, I rarely ever review a place and only if I’ve been there multiple times. Anyway. This place does the gold medal of gnocchi. I’m not talking a Steve Bradbury gold medal where everyone else falls over and you just happen to wing it, the gnocchi here is the Cathy Freeman at Sydney in 2000 in the 400 metres of gnocchi. Starts well out of the blocks, holds its position well, finishes strongly and leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling that you’ll be talking about for a while. The wife and I have decided when we next return, which we will be, to order a server each because you’ll fight over it.
The fried zucchini slices were dry and a few of them burnt to the point of being inedible. The aioli was bland. None of the food was enjoyable. The toilet was appalling. It is very hard to get to Fodder without a booking but dont expect a soap dispenser and liquid soap. All I got was a dry leftover of soap bar.
Amazing food, we had the set menu so got to sample a lot of the smaller dishes, they were amazing. The wood fired pizza is amazing and a great selection of wines.
Had the chefs menu for lunch. The flavours were clever and the food was excellently cooked. Service was friendly and efficient (on a quiet day).Highly recommended- the pork "chop" was brilliant.
Fantastic place to dine while in the Coonawarra region. Ottelia + Fodder offers a cosy and inviting space. Delicious food and importantly, exquisite an range of white & red wines. The staff were absolutely lovely. Try and book in advanced to secure a table if youre staying in the area or planning a visit, as they can get busy. Well be back soon!
Stopped in for a quick bite to eat, place was packed but the friendly staff managed to find us a seat. Wood oven pizza was perfect, right amount of topping, base was 10/10.
It is not the sort of place I can view very well. The door service was very average, restaurant half empty and they had trouble working out seats for two. Wine choice is limited to their wines only. We had an over priced pizza each.Base was tasteless and in fact both our pizzas were possibly the worst pizzas we have eaten.Just no flavors. They dont serve tea and coffee which i thought very poor.Forget about the place if you are vegetarian. It seems to have a good name with the locals, but there again there is no competition to compare it with.
So dissapointing. Pastry was undercooked and oily as was the wait staff. When I asked about the burn bits under the pizza i was informed that it was burnt Semolina and was normal. Hmmm I personally dont like it.Was also surprise when asked if we had a booking... given that there were only 2 other people seated at 1pm, somehow i would not have expected t hgat a booking was required.
Wonderful service. Especially the knowledgeable waiter. The pizza and duck salad was absolutely delicious as was the scone aand cream. Will recommend any one to book and enjoy the best service and food.
The wine is decent but there is a tough competition in Coonawarra when it comes to wine. Compared to other wineries in the region Ottelia is fairly average. In terms of food there is very little competition and to find a decent place for lunch is almost impossible. Don’t come without booking, they’re almost always full. You can get a takeaway pizza and eat it in the nearby park. Pizzas are made in woodfire oven, cost $22 and despite being fairly average, probably your best lunch option in Coonawarra, unless you’re happy with a cold platter (in that case go to Di Giorgio). We had pizza here twice. The biggest issue is the base (my benchmark is a very authentic, inexpensive place in Rome, Italy). The dough is too heavy and the sauce a bit off ballance. They use different cheeses. First time we had way too much cheese, which made it quite oily and cheesy. Second time a lot of salami, not enough eggplant, hardly any artichokes (these were the 3 toppings). But I appreciate people come to Coonawarra for Cabernet Sauvignon and not for pizzas. Overall, a solid 3 star experience.
OMG! We had the chefs menu, and alI can say is "WOW"! Super fresh, local seasonal produce, great wines and fantastic service! An absolute hidden gem, ill definitely be a repeat customer.
Love the pizzas here. Fresh bases, fresh toppings and really good wine. Will be back!
phenomenal! the most delicious food, pizza and share plates (we were even given bread to ensure we got everything off the plate! highly reccomended especially with one of their own wines!
DELICIOUS. Did I mention delicious? Pizza is awesome wine is fantastic!
Fodder is an intimate, while still comfortably casual restaurant just outside the township of Penola, located in the beautiful area of Coonawarra. Fodder boasts Great personalized service with wine tasting available on site. The great range of wood-fired pizzas and tapas are made mostly from fresh ingredients from their very own garden.Fodder is a great place to suit a casual get together with friends and family or even a romantic meal with your significant other
Fantastic pizza! Tasted real like an Italian home made pizza. Dough was soft and yummy with great salami on top. If i go to Coonawara again, definitely my next lunch place.
