We had a wonderful meal here. The food was delicious - the roasted beetroot is a must for a side dish. The waiting staff were very friendly and helpful.Highly recommend this restaurant and perfect location if youre attending a show downstairs.

Been visiting Barbican centre over many years but never really sat down for a proper meal. The restaurant had a nice vibe, staff seemed great and knows their wines. With it being evening, the church looked picturesque across the way.I think for London city, the set menu prices were reasonable. For starters I choose the scallops, they were delicious and well complemented. I loved the touch of fresh seaweed, the smell taking you to the ocean.Mains I went for the Pappardelle pasta, braised venison, pecorino cheese, toasted hazelnuts - super tender and sauce was delicious. Being a cheese fiend I wouldn’t have minded a little more pecorino (just not sure if it would have been frowned upon), nevertheless was still tasty.Tried bit of the pork loin, lovely and tender, with a delicious sauce and various vegetables to complement it. Though I’m still not a fan of the type of ‘popcorn’ style crackling people make, I much prefer the mixture of the traditional crunch and melt in mouth textures.I’m happy to return on my future visits.

Nice atmosphere and location but the food wasn’t impressive. My soup was odd-tasting and plain but the risotto was quite nice. Service was quite good and the menu wasn’t exciting.

Slow, with 30 mins from starter to main, without care or explanation. Average food except a tasty chocolate bombe.

Went Saturday afternoon before show Friendly staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Food was excellent. In particular the pea risotto. Reasonably priced. A quality restaurant in a great location for barbican shows even by London High restaurant standards.

Firstly they were quite busy so service was slow.Tried their veganuary set menu which was hit and miss, and quite overpriced considering the cost of the ingredients. My selection was nice though, the gnocchi to start and courgettini main. Both had nice flavours. My wife had the orzotto starter and the cauliflower main. Both were very bland and disappointing. As I say, hit and miss.

If youre Italian avoid this place like the plague...which Ill do in the future. The ossobuco I had was to be accompanied by polenta, but got a gooey bit if something not even the head waiter could recognise. The cost for just one miserable piece of ossobuco and a couple of carrots was astronomical....this is not a great representation of what the words Osteria really means!

Went before a theatre visit. We had an hour and a half to spare and were given the pre theatre menu. There should have been enough time to have a three course meal. As it turns out, we only wanted two courses but when we had to remind them to take our order after 20 minutes, time was getting shorter. The food was excellent but the service let it down. We ended up asking for the bill and paying as we ate our dessert. It was not their finest hour and for that matter it wasnt ours either.

Very strange greeting, trying to talk us out of eating there even though the restaurant had many free tables. We were then only given the a la carte menu and had to ask for the theatre one. Pasta was nice. Squid and salad hugely uninteresting and dry. Zucchini was delicious. Will never visit again.

Views of the Barbican make this a unique experience. Remarkably tranquil for central London. You get a bit of space, the food and drink is good and the service is great - all at a reasonable price. Recommend going for a walk around the Barbican complex after dinner (and maybe look up its fascinating history and architectural design if you like a bit of a guided walk)

Nice food in a surprisingly nice setting in the Barbican culture & arts centre. Ive had the chicken with gnocchi, accompanied by a glass of rose, and I enjoyed both very much.I would advise to get some side dishes as the my main course was a little small. The desert (tiramisuwas quite large in comparison.

It must be so much fun to work at this place. As the staff spend more time talking to each other than serving customers. Very poor service for somewhere that pretends to be high quality.

Lunch set menu is good value, particularly liked the wild boar tortellini and apricot and almond tart. Let down by service however. As a pre theatre meal led to a panic and having to chase for desserts and bill at the end. From when we sat down took 20 minutes for our drinks and meal was over an hour with rushing at the end.

The food was ok, but not as exceptional as youd expect for the price. The staff were simply lazy. It took forever for them to take our order, bring the bill, bring the wine etc - there were plenty of them, but they mostly stood around talking or just moved with no sense of urgency.I suspect this place, like much of the food/drink at the barbican, is full of people who want to work in the barbican not in catering. Sack the manager, put in place someone who knows what theyre doing as the location and view are excellent and with proper management and a relaunch this place could fly.

Quite poor. We had a nice table for a pre-theatre meal. Chicory salad and soup starter were both good. Mains were abismal. Pasta was clearly not fresh and undercooked. I sent it back and received no apology. It arrived back on the table in a state that I would describe as only marginally improved. My partner ordered a courgette dish that was greasy, water-logged and flavourless. Good wine selection mind you. Unlikely to return.

A pleasant oasis of calm within the Barbican arts complex offering those attending plays and concerts somewhere to have lunch, dinner or just a drink. The food is quite good, though it is the location rather than the food that puts bums on seats here. Portions are a little small, but adequate. On a recent visit, we were not offered bread at the start of the meal, but other than that, service was OK. Though as often is the case these days, one got the feeling that the place was operating with a couple of staff less than would be ideal.Do give it a try if you are visiting the Barbican.

Four out of five dishes were excellent. Chicken was still pink/bloody inside and was sent back. Everyone was very good about offering alternatives and taking it off the bill, but it shouldnt have happened. Hopefully this was a one-off.

Nice setting in the Barbican complex. Obviously handy for the theatre and the flow of patrons reflects that. Views from window tables. Service patchy for no clear reason but food better. Modest range of items on the menu, well cooked and reasonably priced.

Great food and wine at a decent price. Nice view over the Barbican gardens. The only complaint I have is that the mains portions are rather small - they clearly expect you to have 3 courses, which rather inflated the price of the evening.

Visited here with partners family for a birthday meal on Saturday evening. Surprisingly quiet by 8 when we ate. The round table was very social for six. We ate from the set menu which had a good choice and vegan options.Service was friendly but unobtrusive, portions were generous.Quite expensive but not excessive given the location and quality of food.I imagine it does a lot of pre theatre meals earlier in the evening so might be much busier then. A good venue for a special occasion. The Barbican centre is quite a complex place to find your way around in and a fair walk from parking if you not very mobile but is well served with lifts.Great views over the central water feature of the church and st. Pauls dome between the high-rise buildings.

A great place to eat before a concert at the Barbican. Whats really good is that you pay for a three-course meal and have the last course after the concert. You can also do the same with bottles of wine, start one pre-concert and then finish it during the interval and/or after the concert.Food is good with a reasonable choice on the fixed price menu.

Osteria is a restaurant located on the second level of the Barbican. The restaurant serves predominantly Italian cuisine and wine. I can honestly say that the place far exceeded my expectations. We ordered the salmon, peas and mint risotto, two side salads, and a lavender cocktail and moscato Rosa. Everything was superbly prepared and very fresh. The salmon was a perfect pink and seasoned with sea salt, on a bed of soaked zucchini and aubergine, which was exquisitely prepared. Likewise the peas and mint risotto was beautiful - fresh peas and well-seasoned sprigs of mint. The place was quiet on a Tuesday evening and service was fantastic throughout the meal. Great views of the city as well. Will definitely be going back. As an added bit of fun, the wash basins in the restrooms are controlled by foot pedals. Very cool place.

arrived 30 mins early for pre-paid meal, told by officious manger we could not sit at a table, order food before 5pm or even look at the menu.Told rules is rules and he would not budge on this issue. We said we were in a hurry and would like to eat and leave quickly to which he replied thats your problem!! Nice to feel wanted.........! If wed not pre-paid wed have left immediately. Waitresses lovely & charming .Manager needs a holiday or a desk job well away from the public.

We went as a family with teenage kids. The food , service and setting were all good but somewhat spoiled by the presence of a very tenacious mouse running around under the tables. The staff did come out to look at the mouse but apparently couldnt do anything . Also do be aware that if you are at an evening concert then the restaurant is probably going to be closed before you get out. Strange but true, for a restsurant that is meant to offer an after concert service, but we had to leave the concert before the end!

Disappointed. The decor and ambience were just okay. The food on the other hand was below par. The fish dish, although cooked properly, lacked flavour. It needed a sauce to make it more interesting. The courgette fries were chewy, not crispy, and the accompanying sauce was bland. The prosecco wed ordered didnt arrive so we had to go up to the waiter to ask for them. Never again!

I liked the interiors and the quiet atmosphere at this restaurant, which was a nice surprise when we tried it after a concert without really expecting it to have a spare table for us.Prices were in line with what I expect from a London restaurant, and food, while maybe not extraordinary, was still pretty good, standard Italian cuisine. I liked their bruschetta, with really tasty tomatoes, found the squid starter a little underwhelming (particularly because of the abundance of rocket, which is the default resort of uninspired chefs who want to "italianise" a dish), and thought the "primi" were pretty good (particularly my bucatini with pork ragù).Lovely view over the Barbican canal, fast and pleasant service.

I can only comment on the cocktails as Ive never tried the food here. If you are visiting The Barbican Centre and fancy a tipple or two before or after your exhibition or show, Osteria offers an extensive cocktail menu that are all carefully and unhurriedly made at the bar.

the restaurant has a lovely view of the Barbican. Sadly thats the only good thing about this place.Very very small over priced portions. I ordered pork belly with potatoes and mushrooms. I think I had one potatoes slice on my plate. My bf ordered a large pasta and it was tiny I dread to think how small the small was.The food was not good and not a lot of it and very expensive.

Its really good, but they closed at 2230, so rushed the bill, and removed the candle on the table before we left. We left at 2223, so not that good for a first date...

By far my favourite cocktail bar. Its significantly quieter to pubs so you can have a quiet conversation with a friend while relaxing by the view of the Barbican centre. Elegant but cosy interior makes it a good place for a date.

Has nice views of the Barbican, but this doesnt make up for the tiny portions, which are far too small taking into account the price and quality. They dont make up for it the service either, not bringing ordered drinks.

Went for team lunch with high hopes and expectations. How sorely disappointed we were. The service was surly and dismissive. Our waiters informed us that we must all order of the Christmas menu or A la Carte. Additionally we only had 30 minutes to order and couldnt wait for members of our party. Not because the kitchen was closing but that was policy of the restaurant.Food was uninspired and the Sea Bass was rubbery. For those prices I would have expected something special. Then we werent allowed to stay for a drink at the bar (3 pm), it wasnt even that busy!Such a shame as we were really looking forward to it

Ive been to Gin Joint a few times; with friends and family, when it first opened and months after opening, and it is consistently good. The gin options on the food menu are a novelty but still worth a try. Cocktails to start are pretty much mandatory at a place with a name like this, and cocktails this good. Martinis from the classic to lavender are tasty without blowing your head off.The stand out dishes I have tried include a cauliflower rarebit side, but I believe this is a vegetarian main too. There was a cherry and chocolate dessert that was amazing, but sadly missing from the menu on my last visit. One dish which wasnt well received was a mushroom custard, but we expected it to be an odd dish anyway. One thing to remember is that Barbican residents and arts centre members get a discount, making this place a definite regular.

This place is very very posh but has amazing service and very yummy food. I went there for a christmas style lunch and it was both beautifully presented and very tasty. The view from the top of the portrait gallery is amazing, you can see the whole of london, very good if youre a tourist! I would highly recommend this restaurant but it is a little on the pricey side.
