Orbelian Caravanserai - Historical landmark in Gavarr, Armenia
There is not a lot to see, but worth a visit. You have a great view of the surrounding mountains. Also, we met a friendly local couple, who sold fruits, jam and sweets.
Beautiful!
Part of historic silk road, in nice mountains with beautiful view 😊
I am a fan of old structures built centuries ago and still standing up to this date. This was built for the use of weary travellers passing at the mountains in the province of Vayots Dzor in Armenia.
One of the most mystical places in Armenia. Its better drive from Sevan region, for using this road will let you see the whole beauty of the area, feel the spirit of old travelars from Silk Road.
Good views and nice stop over on the way to Tatev
Fascinating look into what travel was like a thousand years ago
Amazing that this is still standing.Well worth a drop in.Locals sell great brandy at this site.
Wonderful place
Great historical place
Magical
Free vodka. Avoid the mulberry.
13th century
Beautiful, well preserved monument. This is a stop over to the traders using the Silk Road to take rest with their animals. Nice views of the valley from here.
Cool historic site, also slightly creepy. A must-stop if you cross the Selim pass.
Very nice and thought-provoking
Very interesting. Medieval hotel from Silk Road days
One continues to think how amazing I must have been in the old days.PROS1gets one back to the history of the Silk Road and its role back in the days2on the side of the road as one drives on3beautiful scenery, unique architecture and interior layoutCONS1I wish there were plans or explanations about how did the interior layout served the purpose back in the days
The Drive from Areni to Orbelians Caravanserai is one of the most beautiful trips you can make in Armenia! Just make sure you fuel up with gas before you cross the mountains! The scenerie is epic and the landscape changes every 30 minutes!
Fabulous views.
This stop on famous Silk Road is really breathtaking. This is end of March. When you imagine medieval caravans of traders passing here in winter you understand how it was awfully difficult and dangerous to do trade that time. This stop was built on the highest point of the Vardenyants passway to accommodate traders and travelers. Surely this facility saved hundreds of lives from snowstorms, rain, wild animals etc. To enjoy its architecture and enter into the facility it is better to come in summer. To see and feel the extreme of that time and enjoy some adrenaline welcome in deep fall, winter (if you are to much adventurousand early spring.
Because it shows the important rule in silk road and it is a Persian word; so, this ancient relic shows the territory of cultural Iran.
It a place of history an actual part of something build by great empire, otherwise its just a place, no restaurants or cafes or market or any part of civilisation exempt road.
We visited this place in early December and though we didnt get to go inside, the outside itself was superb for us. This was the first time we experienced snow up close in Armenia which made the point a magical surprise for us, the entire family enjoyed this point. Definitely recommended to go only before complete snowfall will start or at the end season if visiting during winter otherwise in summer it would be a beautiful drive with lush green on either side of the roads.
nice place and view
Amazing, mystical, really nice place with a great panoramic view of the mountains.
Historic place
Part of Silk road. With incredible views
Very impressive
Very nice view on valley and mountains
Impressing. Allways worth a stop.
Perfect view, very old building for trading. Nowadays they call "Trading Mall"
Super Interesting! A beautiful building with a lot of history and an amazing view
Beautiful ancient building with a spectacular view. You must go there on a sunny day and have a picnic just outside.
Silk road era inn in a mountain pass. Beautiful view of the valley towards yeghergnadzor and an interesting building. There are a also a few signs around giving some historical background and significance. Definitely worth stopping at but I wouldnt go out of my way to see it.
beautifully preserved building
Stop if you drive by, but not worth a trip itselfs.
The real deal
Very unusual Kervanserai. Part of the silk route
Beautiful view. No tourists.
Drive in the mountain in Armenia is a good experience, landscapes changes almost every curve and they are widely different. The 50km long drive between Martuni and Yeghegnadzor really worth the rental of the car. In the middle of the road you can find this caravanserai, not beautiful outside as it is inside. Cold and spectral, it has no special description about the activity but the structure let you imagine yourself how this horses garage worked.
Nice spot, if you have a tent you are free to use it there (with beautiful view to the valley). Caravanserai building were renovated and it is easy to get there. Just do not sleep inside;), there are a mouses;)
Original caravanserai on the silk road with a massive view
A great place! It is a good caravanserai. The scenery here is awesome! You can check this place while moving from Vayots region to Gegharkunik. You can also spend the night there.
Really nice place
I did not expected such building on this place . IT is a bit dark in THE building
Exceptional place! Visit if you are on the Selim pass
Beautiful nature, amazing bas-reliefs. Arabic letters above entrance were destroyed by locals who believed they were Turkish. Arabic was a Franca lingua in this area of trade routes
One of the most stunning views Ive ever encountered in my life. Come from the north over the Selin Pass. Quite dangerous in winter
