A menu featuring an array of comfort food, cocktails, & weekly specials in a traditional setting.
So glad we could not get a table next door, one of those fantastic spur of the moment decisions. Had a wonderful evening with family, excellent food, menu, service and relaxed ambiance.
Atmosphere was great, food was fresh and full of flavour, portion size was bang on. We genuinely dont have any reason to complain, everything was fantastic and priced fairly. Well worth a visit.
After having a trauma of a car accident the barman Henry was really lovely and made sure we were looked after. Thank you so much for being kind and understanding.Drinks and coffee were great too!! Thank you for your great customer service and support today.
Nice place to eat, delicious food really enjoyed the fish. Great loacation. For five star it was missing service(you need to pay 10% service charge, if you want second drink you need to chase waitress, nobody ask or everything allright or you want something more. But I guessing every restaurant service struggling now due of shortages of experience hospitality people.
Brilliant afternoon meal with cocktails, food out of this world, staff friendly and happy to help out, would book gets busy.price was not to bad.just give it a try.
Lovely inviting place with a friendly staff.Food was excellent, fresh and tasty ❤❤❤
The service here is excellent. We arrived without a booking on a particularly busy evening and the young man working advised when we could come back in order to be seated (less than an hour). We returned around 20 minutes later intending to wait at the bar until the table was ready, but were pleasantly surprised when the sane young man found a way to seat us so that we didn’t have to wait and we’re able to order straight away, which was great because we were starving. The food did not disappoint, the crab bisque was delicious and the sea bass was wonderful and cooked perfectly. We were too full for dessert but didn’t want to miss out, so we took dessert home with us. All of the staff were lovely and gave fantastic service, even though it was very busy and they had a large table of difficult customers to deal with!I’ll definitely be returning any time that I’m back in Torquay and highly recommend this place!
Food was delicious, unfortunately had to wait almost 10 minutes for a childs pizza after adult meals were served. Always better to serve children first! Some delays in general service as not really enough staff, but all were polite and friendly
Good food but a very confused menu with many extra supplement charges which is a big turn-off. Excellent Moules and very good Vongole Linguine and fresh fish of the day plus Arancini too. Sadly you are forced to have at least two courses meaning a minimum £30 spend which is cheeky to say the least and they stop serving very early. This is a big problem in Torquay which meant we had one night with no food at all. Terrible if you are under 70 or working. Brexit staff shortages are screwing this town completely and it is now so clear! Despite this the staff were kind an friendly despite the challenges. I would return again if in town but they need to clarify the menu. Sadly a very limited real ale choice - nothing on draught in a region full of great ales.
Fresh seafood, caviar, steak, incredible view, place and staff! Three courses for £35. Bacon cheeseburger was undercooked for my taste but i didnt ask for my usual over cooked, even still they offered me a free cocktail to make up for only being able to eat half. Very generous with the mussels on starter menu and the scallops delicious
This is the worst food Ive ever had in my life. You will feel shocked about the quality of the food. The seafood is not fresh at all. This restaurant should be fined for serving poor quality food to tourists. Whereas the price is very expensive, even more expensive than central London. It’s insane! Our good mood was totally ruined. We still feel very angry even when we came back to our hotel. Avoid this cowboy restaurant!!!
I wasnt going to leave a review, but Ive been thinking about it so much, I just want others to be aware. This restaurant used to be hands down my favourite in the bay, having been only a handful of times as it is such a treat and quite expensive. We went last night to spend a gift voucher I was given, having not been for over a year. They have completely changed the menu, now with a more "main stream" feel, and more choices, but the options are ultimately, seafood or pizza. The starter and focaccia was honestly delicious, but we both had a pizza and it was completely rubbish. Overcooked base and difficult to cut and eat, and the tomato sauce just tasted of raw tomato puree. There was dried egg yolk spread on mine which was really off-putting. Embarrassing that each of these would have been valued over £20 if prices were listed on the menu. Looking at other reviews, Ive seen others have had a similar experience with pizza there. As we had the voucher, for whatever reason, we didnt get given a bill and only realised after paying the rest that a 10% service charge was added without our knowledge. £81 for 2 arancini, 2 pizzas, some focaccia, one diet coke and one beer...The service was alright and the staff were friendly but they were mostly dressed very casually with no uniformity and this certainly didnt add to a high end feel which is how they have always marketed themselves. Finally, the layout of the restaurant has been changed and the new bits added around the original seating area feels very cheap and rushed, like you can tell this was not meant for patrons eyes initially. There was very little toilet paper and one of the locks on one of the toilet doors was broken. All added up to a deflating evening we had really looked forward to. Very sad to say I will not return nor recommend it again.
So disappointed on what was only our 2nd visit. Our first visit was many years ago before the change around of the restaurant layout (and possibly owners?).Food was mediocre and definitely not worth the high price. The set menu was not very exciting and choices limited. Some of the items were unavailable also. And for a coastal restaurant the fish offering was poor.We were charged a supplement of £15 for a steak ordered on top of the set menu price and when it arrived we could not see why we were charged so much extra for such a paltry amount of meat.On our first visit as we ate the food we were in heaven… not this time… we were really hungry so ate the food anyway, but we couldn’t wait to finish and leave. They say you should never try to recreate a memory and in the case of On The Rocks that statement is true! Why didn’t we complain on the night… we didn’t feel like it would have got us anywhere. The staff were polite enough but didn’t seem engaged in their role. They seemed to care more about fitting as many people in, which actually added to the poor experience as several tables were left waiting for a long time for food and for service.Perhaps we caught them on a bad day… who knows… we live 5 hr drive away and would only go there on a visit to family living in the area. Next time we will choose somewhere different.
Walked in to find out about gluten free options. I was talking to a lady and she was doing fine and a man walked over just interrupted our conversation, talked over her and started saying it’s all on the menu repeatedly. I had no opportunity to ask about cross contamination etc. with so much choice/competition in the area I am surprised that they can afford to be so rude!
Had dinner there and it was great. Great food , great service and lovely waiters! Recommend to eat there .A small issue was the time between starters and main
Food very nice especially the seafood. Service could be much better (thats the reason for my 3 star ratingconsidering mains were brought out at different times with no apology & a 10 minute delay. Also check your bill as they like to add an automatic 10% service charge
Eaten here before and it was lovely, but this time it was terrible from the start, staff didn’t have a clue what they were doing, i had the Brixham cod cakes to start and one of them was completely frozen!!!When complained the waiter to be fair was shocked and very helpful. And said he would knock it off the bill. When the bill came out it wasn’t knocked off tNd when we asked one of the other waiters as the original waiter had gone home she was extremely rude about it. I wouldn’t go back plus is grossly overpriced £30 for two course! There having a laugh
Mussels were plentiful for the starter however that was the only alright part of this joint. My main course pizza was very underwhelming. The upstairs was baking and the service was extremely slow. Do not recommend.
Another fabulous place to eat out in Torquay. It my be slightly more pricy than some other places, but well worthwhile, especially if you enjoy fresh fish
Had to wait 1 hour 45 mins for food and when it arrived the pizzas were overcooked. I didnt have a starter so paid £30 for a pizza, which I wasnt very happy with. The staff tried to be obliging with offering a free dessert which our group didnt really want so they gave us a bottle of prosecco instead and said thats it, it was very disappointing and its such a lovely location and very nice inside. I think they couldnt deal with the amount of people they had booked in but it was not acceptable to have to wait that length of time for a meal.
We always have a great time here , Rafael is always amazing, and today we were helped by Joe and he was great 👍 the polenta cake 😋
Absolutely amazing place, delicious food, friendly staff... we had good time there
We had a lovely meal here whilst on holiday in Torquay. Harry was our expert server who gave us a very detailed guide through the menu. Joe and Raf were also lovely guys, definitely created a feel good atmosphere.Awesome food accompanied by amazing service made it a truly lovely experience for my partner and I. Thanks guys!
We had the bisque and scallops for starters and sole & seafood pasta for mains. Great food, great service, would highly recommend.
If I could leave one star I would. Both members of the party are without a father, so booked a meal for lunchtime rather than spending the day sat at home upset. Wish I hadn’t bothered as apparently on the rocks only reserves decent service, any type of service actually, for those dining with their father on Father’s Day.Heavy rain and heaters switched off outside meant that we asked to sit at one of five empty tables in the bar area. They said they were reserved for “walk in drinkers” ?? I said please could we eat our food there. The manager (allegedly, very short man with round glasses and dark hairdecided to shout across from where he was making drinks to tell me no. I said please could you reconsider as it was quiet and we just wanted to eat and go quickly. He rolled his eyes at me and said no and I’m too busy for this. Too busy to deal with a customer? Ok. I said if it was going to cause an issue I will just leave, bearing in mind, I was clearly distressed at this point and he just shrugged his shoulders and then the second my back was turned started talking inappropriately about me. What great service!!!!!!! Not.Ironic that the people sat outside were talking about how overpriced it was for such poor service. Maybe they find another way to justify £30 for a starter and a pizza. Who knows.I would remind them that you don’t know what every day means to people and whilst the “130 diners booked in across the day” that are apparently dining with you today are clearly a priority, I hope the exceptionally poor management here and the rude waiter (don’t know his name, the one with the diamond earring and mullet if I remember correctlylearn to treat people better. Food last time was average, wish I had never considered going back.
Had lunch here yesterday with a friend & it was excellent! The service was great & they were happy for us to share a main course (whole Sea Bass cooked to perfection& we also enjoyed an excellent carafe of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc! Highly recommended.
Excellent fish chain dome right. Right next to the river they have an extensive selection of fish and know how to prepare it. I happened also to see them teaching three of the staff how to prepare lobster so they have industrialised the teaching too. Come and try it.
Very disappointing with meal yesterday, salad consisted of lettuce cut in half with mayonnaise, asked for j potato got chips, fish was cooked ok. My daughter had seafood pasta which tasted like spaghetti in passata. Particularly dissatisfied because had previously been five weeks earlier and had a lovely meal (same choices for starter and main). Didn’t stay for dessert. Waiting staff were pleasant. Given this restaurant is relatively expensive Will not go back to chance it again!
First impression average. Food tasty and enjoyable, service with a smile but not really value for money. We enjoyed our meal but will not return.
The restaurant was clean and well presented. The staff were smartly dressed and incredibly helpful. This was our first visit and we will definitely visit again. The food was impeccable. Incredibly fresh from the Brixham market that morning. The fish was so beautifully cooked, delicate and fell away from the bone. Will definitely visit again.
This was a special find. Great views over the harbour on the first floor. Fabulous fresh fish (we had mackerel and brill), scallops & for meat eaters slow cooked crispy miso pork. Also pizza & pasta & options for all. Great value at £30 for 2 & £35 for 3 courses. Fantastic friendly staff. Great service 👏
Really decent food and drinks for a reasonable price, service was quick and easy. No let downs. Would recommend and go again.
Went here on Christmas day. Food was excellent and the decorations were lovely. A real effort had gone into these. The service was a little bit slow, although this could have been because it was Christmas day.Would go back at another time and take our friends here.
Fantastic food, great service and very reasonable price considering the quality of everything you receive. And a great view too!Couldnt recommend highly enough ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Good food. Good staff Great value. The service was a bit relaxed and we picked a cold evening to sit outside but the views were still good
Fantastic! The food was lovely (even if 2 courses at lunchtime was pusing it slightly). The scallops were perfectly cooked in their shells with a lovely breadcrumb coating and the mussels were amazing. Highly recommended.
Quite a small menu but very tasty. Fresh seafood, well cooked. Really enjoyed it. As is common in Torquay service is sedate. However, would be more than happy to return and would definitely recommend.
Fantastic restaurant. Been coming here each year for past 5 years. Food is always fresh, delicious and of a high standard. Staff are super friendly and attentive. Love the new menu this season.
What a lovely place to come and eat. Situated on the water front with the upmost of accommodating and friendly staff. (Especially Melody)Varied and tasteful menu.GF and adapted to individual taste.Chocolate and Pineapple dessert a must!
Lovely restaurant with an amazing atmosphere! Food was exceptional especially the arrancini! The experience of eating here was made all the more better by Raphael the waiter who was so nice.
Great meal, excellent service cannot recommend more had a great time, I was dining alone and sometimes that means you can be overlooked a bit but not an issue here staff were excellent.
Nice selection of food, staff and service was great also. Top tip get a table with a view upstairs and its usually much quieter too compared to the rest of the venue.
Amazing food! We were lucky to get a table without booking as they seemed busy. Went on a Weds night. Food a little pricier than I usually eat (£20/2 courses, £25 for 3but so worth it. Everything we ate was delicious but especially the mussels. Portions were huge! I got the scallops starters and mussels main and struggled to finish them! Food was so tender, so well seasoned, really felt like a treat. Only downside is they were so busy it took a little while to get our food.
Wow... That a lovely restaurant this is, great value for money, clean, covid friendly and the staff couldnt do enough for you. Would definitely recommend
Had an incredible meal here during our afternoon visiting Torquay. Delicious local scallops to start followed my a huge bowl of Mussels. Desserts were superb too.Service was friendly and it was fantastic being sat outside in the sun watching the world go by.Two three course meals with a lovely bottle of Viogner came to £88,which we felt was excellent value for money. The playlist was bloody awful but I can forgive them for that considering how good everything else was.
We first visited On The Rocks last August and absolutely loved it. The service, the lunchtime set menu and the quality of food is incredible. We should have posted a review last year as we revisited just last week and despite being fully booked, the team (and the cool barman with the beardwere able to squeeze us in on both a lunchtime and on Friday night also. It was our last night on Holiday and one of our highlights of the week. The menu is simply amazing and there is something for everyone. The presentation of the dishes was what I can only describe as Michelin Star.We tried the Lamb Ragu, Oysters (which are the best we have ever eaten), Squid, Scallops and the Crispy Belly Pork for starters (had the Belly Pork and Oysters on all visits as it is all so good). For mains, we opted for the seafood linguine, West Country Rump and the catch of the day. All served hot, fresh and simply delicious. The service is welcoming and friendly and whether seated inside or out on the decking, it truly is a relaxing place to be. The different staff that served us were all equally professional and attentive and the owner was also serving tables and looking after her team and customers. We just hope there will be an "On The Rocks" opening in Southampton soon. We will be back!!Booking in advance is a must especially with the added COVID situation as these guys are booked up to 2 weeks in advance. I hope the photos do the food justice as it was simply incredible!
Went for lunch and we had such a lovely experience. Lovely food as you can see and view was lovely too.The only thing to critique was the service - had to wait 30mins + for a flat white which we had to chase twice
Lovely view of the harbour, freshly made food, dog friendly.Limited menu but good value, as 2 courses for £25 or 3 for £30. Only bad thing was the linguine was swimming in olive oil. Overall, was lovely and would definitely go again, lovely place.
The food is very elegant but not that filling, the Monk fish with mussels and black liguini with the very special sauce was to die for , so much we have visited twice. Not dog friendly so had to sit outside in the cold and were tempted just to pay up and leave after the first course but we were hungry, so stayed for the chocolate dessert, it was worth it. We cant understand the rules about dogs some restaurants are fine and some treat us like smokers!
Best roast pork Ive ever had (and that includes ones cooked by Michelin star chefs). Meat, amazing. Vegetables were great (a nice twist with the cabbage and peas). Insane cauliflower cheese (sorry nanna). Splendid potatoes and nicely balanced gravy. All for a great price and superb service. Hats off to the head chef, bravo.
