Oliver Hill Battery - Tourist attraction in Kwinana, Australia
A often forgotten piece of WA history. A good guide to fill in the details helped.Important for me as my grandfather spent time here in WWII
Friendly volunteers. Great to see our military history maintained
Very fascinating with the information about Oliver Hill Battery in WWII and how this historical place protected the Fremantle Harbor in case of any attack as Fremantle Harbor was the Port of all our Navy submarines and ships
This was part of the Grand Tour on Rottnest and was extremely interesting with knowledgeable volunteers hosting tours of small groups.
Really enjoyed the tour by the volunteers there, very interesting about the history :)
Brilliant
Volunteers tske you around. Very knowledgeable. Train ride there.
Great tour
Amazing history and great view
Interesting history to this beautiful spot.
Nice that theres well maintained history for everyone to see.
Great. Great to see. Guide was very informative.
The battery looked really nice and preserved with small surrounding buildings. Unfortunately closed due covid.
Everyone should experience history.
As a visitor and Guide I can highly recommend this as thoroughly interesting and unique restored WW2 gun emplacements H1 and H2 with access to underground tunnels and magazine, pump and engine rooms.
Winter morning sunrises always worth the very early trip to one of the highest hilltops on Rottnest Island W A
Super amazing and unbelievable place. If you go to Rottnest Island, U need to go there. Good place to take a photo.
Awesome tour of the inner workings of the gun turret. Seeing the tunnels is amazing.
Great tour guide! :thank you.
Great fun, very interesting, a part of Perths history.
The volunteers are amazingly well knowledged and enthusiastic. Thank you for the tour. A highlight of our Rotto camp.
Super knowledgeable guides. Very interesting.
A fantastic experience learning from volunteer guide Ian, a trip back in time to what it was really like to be serving at this emplacement. Worth the sma tour fee, a must see when visiting Rottnest if you are a history nut!
Recomend seeing. Very Impressive.
Took a tour with Sharon, one of the volunteers. It was great. A refresher for me and the kids learned a little bit of history of Perth and Rottnest during WW2. Highly recommended.
Interesting insight into local War Time History
Great workout on the quads to get up the hill, spectacular view for 360° as the reward! Recommend the tour too, amazing history...
Historic military spot! We somehow walked to the Battery and had a chance to take a tour and we were really lucky to join the great tour guided by John! We wouldnt have known the history of this beautiful island full of quokkas if we didnt visit the Battery.
Old soldier explains H1 gun. He is humorous.
Worth a look around for the interesting world war two history and great views. You have to leave your bike at the bottom of the hill tho.
Second time on the island didnt know it was here the first time 2 volunteers were very helpful and had great knowledge
Really interesting tour and fun train ride ..
This is a must see when visiting Rottnest Island. It’s a couple of kilometres from town by bike or there is a bus and train you can take to get there. This hill was deconstructed so the tunnels could be built and then rebuilt to house the Gun.A guide tour is definitely recommended as the guides are very knowledgeable and make the tour interesting and well worth the $20 for a family ticket. You will be in awe of the effort that went in to protecting the Port of Fremantle before and during WWII.If you are riding there is a pretty big hill to walk up to get to the top but it’s not to difficult. There are a few steps along the tunnels to negotiate.
Was fantastic learning about the history and getting close view of the guns, machinery and tunnels during the tour. And hats off to Peter the volunteer tour guide. Awesome
Very interesting tour of the battery and tunnels. Well worth the visit!
Great to do the tunnel tour. Cool history
Detailed tour explaining the operation of the gun battery and its role during World War II
Big 9.2inch 172kg projectilesLots of ww2 history
Interesting gun placement relic from World War 2 hidden away on rottnest. Guided tours available or you can just have a look around as you ride your bike. Gives an insight into Australian war preparation though you would think that an enemy force would just go around an island.
I went on a guided tour through Olvier Hill Battery. The tour guide was relaxed and very informative. We got to see the inner workings on the guns and also when the guns were set up by the British. Please take the tour because you will find out about our colonial Australian war history.
Great part of Western Australian history, very informative tour guides.
Wonderful volunteers running the tours, very informative.
Very well preserved and maintained historical object. We had a guided tour of the whole place and it was very insightful and informative. Really good place for people interested and uninterested with war and historical objects.
Great tour of one of the few remaining big guns in the world.
Very interesting. Worth the walk from the light house.
A tour everyone on the island should explore, recommend to get the train or the walk up the hill is hard.
Great restoration.
Went on the underground tour. Excellent! John was a great guide too.
When me, my mum and little brother went to Rottnest Island, one of the things we did was go to the Oliver Hill Battery. We road on bikes that we rented to the bass of the hill where we parked our bikes and walked up the hill to the gun. While we waited for our tour to start I looked at the many World War II news clippings such as the Pearl Harbor Bombing. to what I learnt Fremantel was a in-portent harbor and Perth was under threat of a Japanese invasion and the gun was made to keep it safe. The gun is 3 stores. The bottom loaded shells while the top fired them. some of the tour was under ground and the stored shells their and had their dinning room there and many other things.
In my youngest years I painted the gun. With olive green paint. And working in the bunker was fun. I reckon you should visit this site. Because theres a bit of historical value here 😀.
