Old Toll Bar Cafe - Bar in Carlisle, United Kingdom
Old Toll Bar Cafe in Carlisle
Description
Our new favourite cafe! Just over the border into Scotland with great coffee and lovely food to choose from. Less than 60 seconds from M6 exit 45 (north bound only).
MoreLoved it a lovely place food was excellent
Had a lovely lunch yesterday nice food at good price very friendly staff
So worth a visit, lovely place, plenty of parking. The two young girls, one being the chef and the other looking after people, are very friendly. Food is very good, we usually stop off here for a cooked breakfast on route to our holiday destination. They also have homemade cakes, which look delicious. It does get very busy so you may have to wait some time for your meal. Children are welcome. Only comment I could make is they could do with more staff.
MoreGood food and friendly, helpful staff
Decent breakfast, just on the Scottish side of the birder.
Lovely place to stop off for coffee and scones on the way down southVery friendly staff and very clean
MoreFriendly staff.reasonably priced great choice of cakes
Lovely cosy and welcoming. The staff were fantastic
I had a coffee, cake and soup for less than £10, the soup was really great! nice clean and welcoming place and lovely girls serving. Defo recommended!
MoreLovely café right on the Scottish/English border.
Nice setting and good food at a affordable price with very good home baking .Service was very slow though
MoreLovely ladies had a nice chat, amazing potato scones
Lovely lunch stop off here on the way home from holiday. Sat outside with the dog. Food lovely but could do with some sunshades as there is no shelter. Dog bowls out for the canine visitors.
MoreI cant understand why this place isnt packed. Its a lovely building with great coffee and food.
MoreStopped here for brunch and cakes on our way through to Falkirk. Delicious scones and caramel cake. Lovely friendly staff. Highly recommended
MoreMy son and I were at Gretna Gateway (Caledonia Parkand decided to call in here for a bite to eat. After looking at the menu and asking what the soup of the day was we decided to have soup and a sandwich. We approached the serving area and asked if we ordered there or at a table and were told it was table service. As we walked away the woman then said there was no hot food. This was despite the fact it was 1 oclock yet the notice said they were open until 3!!!I then asked what about soup which she said she could just manage 2 of. We then asked about sandwiches in case they were in short supply and with a look of disgust on her face, eyes rolled to heaven and a loud tut - oh well o.k. Ill do that then, then said to the boy tell them to sit down, completely ignoring us.It was obvious she couldnt be bothered to make up sandwiches but was going to make a big effort for us.......Her attitude was a disgrace and we told her to forget it and walked out.I would have thought people would be happy to be back at work after the long covid spell. If you dont want to treat customers with some respect - dont forget we are the ones paying your wages - then dont work in hospitality. We went into Gretna and had a nice lunch where staff were happy to serve us. Needless to say we wont be back.
MoreLovely location food didnt match.
The staff were so friendly and amazing service especially for it being the hottest day of the year! The food was lovely and well priced, will be back again!!!Edit: came back again the next day and the food was even better than the day before!
MoreDogs are allowed to sit outside and water is provided. This is by the main though. The food is nice and a good choice of meals and cakes.
MoreA coffee while cycling from Penrith to Dumfries. The first and last cafe in Scotland. Very nice coffee and very nice staff.
MoreTea room, for good breakfasts and snacks, great cakes.
Excellent food, great service from friendly staff
After visiting Gretna Gateway we popped into the Old Toll Bar Cafe for something to eat. We were too late for the Scottish breakfast which was served between 10am and 11:30am. We ordered a round of sandwiches and chips each, these are served between 11:30am and 2pm. As you can see from my picture the food was fresh with a good amount of sandwich filling, I enjoyed them very much along with the shortbread that came with our hot drinks. The service was good. I have only given the cafe four stars because I found the menu choice a bit limited, it seemed to have been scaled down from what Id seen online. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this would be a much better option to stop for refreshments than a service station but you really need to plan your visit to arrive between 10am and 2pm if you want something substantial.
MoreGreat Scottish Breakfast and a lovely pot of tea, staff were very friendly and it was very clean and tidy, can’t wait to go back.
MoreThis was a half way point for us from Gloucestershire going to loc Ness. We stopped in for breakfast, we ordered two Scottish breakfasts, with a pot of tea for the both of us. The lovely young lady, cooked with perfection and served us with professional approach. It was my first time trying the haggis and potatoe scone. I loved it all. The wife and I will be back when were ext in the area. Thank you 😊
MoreVery friendly staff. The full Scottish breakfast was excellent.
Beautiful traditional Scottish breakfast at a really good price, good quality food and good service too... recommend highly
MoreReally lovely place to stop for coffee or lunch. Gorgeous food and lovely friendly people :)
MoreUnacceptable. On Google the opening time is listed as 9am. On our way north on Tuesday, my wife and I called in at 09.50 to discover that the cafe would not open until 10am, so we and two sets of families waited in the rain outside for the cafe to open. We saw people inside at a table and just after 10 a lady looked at the queue outside, but still the cafe didnt open. At five minutes past we all gave up. Clearly the staff have no respect for their customers.
MoreGood food good service 👌
Excellent food! Reasonably priced and friendly staff! Would definitely recommend and will be coming back when next in the area.
MoreWay a fabulous little place this is can recommend this enough. I had the chilli chick wrap with salad and chips and my partner had the cajun chicken sandwich with cajun chips. Both were fabulous. You must try this place
MoreGreat staff. Very good place for a food taste and relaxing before back to the road again
MoreArrived at around 1.30 for lunch. Was very quiet (Sunday afternoon).I had macaroni with chips and garlic bread.Daughter had the same.Partner had the all day breakfast. Not one single complaint. Everything was the perfect temperature, all well cooked and so tasty. We werent stopping for long but will return, definitely. Place was clean and orderly. Staff are very pleasant.Obviously a place of interest but as I said it was a short visit.
MoreWhat a fabulous cafe! Extremely impressed with the food, drink and service from all of the staff!Stopped by the cafe for some breakfast and was immediately taken with the decor and cosy feel. The staff were attentive and catered to your requests. Food was of high quality and well priced. Would highly recommend to anyone who is in the Gretna area to pay a visit.
MoreWent for a family full Scottish breakfast and it was excellent. Food was hot when served despite being busy. Well done to the Chef and Servers on the day. Would highly recommend a visit to last/first cafe in Scotland.
MoreLovely atmosphere! All the food was on the table within minutes and very tasty. Well done to Trish and the girls for doing so well under pressure in such a busy wee place. There was a table of three next to us having afternoon tea and the huge plate of overfilled sandwiches and super selection of cakes was phenomenal!!! I could even justify driving 90 miles just for that. We will always stop here now when we are passing 💕
MoreWhat a great little stop. The food was superb for both adults and kids. Very friendly staff. If your heading through there its worth a stop for a cuppa and the cairn next door was an interesting stop.
MoreDropped in on a whim as we were passing and glad we did. My wife and I had the sandwiches which were excellent very well filled and the freshest of bread. They were accompanied by a green salad crisps and a coleslaw salad. Great value lovely staff will be back next time we are in Gretna.
MoreFantastic sarnies. Nice coffee. We had to sit outside due to them not being dog friendly, but the rain stopped so we were ok. Lovely place and reasonably priced. Will definitely recommend and come again when we come to visit Scotland area again next year. We are from Leeds so only get up here once a year.
MoreSuperb lunch stop. Clean, pleasant surroundings. Lovely food choices and good value for money. Can recommend the soup and sandwiches combo. The afternoon tea on a nearby table looked very tempting too. Delicious! Would definitely return in the future. 😊
MoreGreat cafe with so much history. Location in Gretna is great for a stop off the motorway. Meals are all freshly made and the bread is good. Cakes are on the sweet side but very tasty. Staff are really nice and friendly.
MoreNice quaint tea room situated just over the Scottish border, at Gretna. Very clean and furnished to a hight standard. Toilet is very clean, however, its for all customers and is the only one. Very reasonable prices, staff very friendly and efficient. Food was average. Unfortunately I have had to mark food average due to the fact I discovered on paying my bill that several items on the breakfast were precooked and warmed through as needed. However i have to say I did enjoy my visit and would return for coffee.
MoreJust had a lovely breakfast here with friends. Very friendly ladies attended to us and accommodated my gluten avoidance really nicely without any fuss. Even have gluten free cakes so may return for afternoon tea . Thank you very much Old Toll Bar Cafe
MoreToday I had lunch with my family and my sisters family. We meet up at Gretna occasionally as its halfway for both families. Gotta say, amazing staff, lovely place, hot tasty food. Our waitress couldnt of been anymore obliging. Old Toll Bar will now be the place we go for lunch in Gretna. Great value too. X
MoreBeen to Scotland on numerous occasions and always in the past stopped at motorway services near Gretna for breakfast, not any more, this place was a vast improvement. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, even getting a cushion for my six year old to make her more comfortable over breakfast. The food was first class, best "full Scottish" Ive had yet. Definitely our new breakfast stop of choice.
MoreStopped for a quick breakfast. Very good Nd reasonably price with friendly staff. If travelling between England and Scotland on the M6 it’s just off junction 45 and well worth a visit.
MoreGreat place to begin your visit into Gretna and Scotland 🏴 Interesting history here where Marriages are still performed. Big shout out to Trisha who kindly took some photos to scare the family 😂
MoreLovely wee place with really friendly staff and great soup and sandwiches. We were looking for something fresh and tasty on our journey instead of a service station, we will definitely be back!
