1860s governor's mansion, now a museum with a collection of art by William Robinson & a chic cafe.
Old Government House in Brisbane
Description
Privilege
One of the grandest sandstone buildings I have seen. Kudos to the architect
Beautiful and lovely house, especially from the outside. The decor and design and the general architecture is amazing. The inside is a little barren and bare but theres enough information to tell you what each room used to be for. The carpets and lighting especially in the entrance hallway are amazing. The information about the formation and flags of Queensland are brilliant. Friendly volunteer at the front desk although two random members of security tried to kick me out before realising that the building actually was open that day so they dont seem to coordinate very well. Some areas seemed to be closed off.
MoreA building located in QUT
A good free activity to learn about local government history. There is a good explanational video about the building and it is next to the botanical gardens.
MoreToured this beautiful building during Brisbane Open House 2022. Volunteers, tour guides & all involved were very welcoming & knowledgable. What a treat!
MoreReally great tour and space. A bit of colonial history open to all.
A lovely building in the QUT grounds
Great venue.. Dont think it was best suited to fashion show I attended but I love the place and its history....
MoreThe historical house has been beautifully restored and is amazing that it is open to the public for free!
MoreI was fortunate enough to attend a concert here last night and fell in love with this piece of Queensland heritage. Someone cleary takes a lot of pride in caring for it and presenting the historical items while providing a majestic entertainment space for events. There are quite a number of historical displays that are well worth a look (the building is open to the public during the day), especially in the old state room, though thankfully the history hasnt been whitewashed either. Alongside the beautifully painted ornamental screen and old documents in the state room there is information on the running of the house, the servants and supplies: the nitty-gritty behind the dignified front and politic gravitas. Across the courtyard the storerooms and trade entrance have been preserved, but rather usefully now double as the toilets as well. This place shines at night, and if you were considering a classy function this would be a distinguished atmosphere. The chandelier is brilliant, and the old woodwork glows in the soft lighting. For an event of up to about a hundred people (though I imagine you could squeeze in more if you wishedold government house would be small enough to be intimate, but spacious and well apportioned enough to allow for fluid event organisation. The acoustics are resonant and flattering for live music.Truly a beautiful place. I feel priveleged to have been able to see it at night.

MoreBeautiful building, lovely art with friendly staff.
Would recommend for a wedding ceremony
Old Government House is beautiful. It is restored and now houses The William Robinson Art Gallery. Many of Robinsons paintings are on display. Funny, beautiful, clever paintings, a real treat.
MoreVery interesting. Saw the table where the flag designs were discussed. Each room had a story to tell.
MoreLove the William Robinson exhibit, and its also interesting to wander around old government house.
MoreWell presented historic building that often displays art by famous artists
Thank you so much to Elizabeth, Rachel & Jessica for working with us to plan our wedding. Right up to the end Elizabeth was communicating with us and making sure our special day would run smoothly. We were not disappointed at all with our wet weather option as it was set up beautifully and the guests were so surprised with the staircase entrance! We had the most wonderful day and having the support from Elizabeth, Rachel and Jessica made this possible.Kind RegardsRenee & Tim
MoreReally worth a visit. The art exhibition with Australian artists was spectactular.Imagining what went on in the rooms in this historical house was lovely... the staircase and ballroom ect.
MoreA beautifully restored historical building surrounded by the Botanical Gardens.
Lovely old building and friendly staff. Basically an empty building. Could have more info/history. Worth a look for free.
MoreBeautiful art gallery occupying the building at the moment. Yet it still allows to showcase the old Governors house
MoreThoroughly enjoyed both the William Robinson painting exhibition and the architecture of the historic building
MoreWe had a networking evening there and I totally enjoyed it. The paintings are lively, so is the surrounding. Great place indeed.
MoreBeautifully designed House displays interesting facts about this heritage building.
MoreWe were brought here by our Brisbane Greeters volunteer guide. He told us that apparently people in the olden days were small sized which explains the really unusual design feature found on the doors in the government house. All the doors were really low with bulb handles located at hobbit height. I’ve never seen anything like this!
MoreBeautiful building and restoration, great gift shop, friendly staff. The history video introduction is very well done. A highlight is the William Robinson gallery upstairs, which has new exhibitions a couple of times a year.
MoreHad my Australia Award dinner right here last October, and had always wanted to return to really understand its history. Had the most amazing time visiting it again today as a regular guest. Awesome and polite welcome by the staff all round. Amazing!
MoreLove this building. Well worth a look around and we were lucky enough to enjoy a free classical music concert too.
MoreBeautiful old building, nice gift shop and an art gallery upstairs
Nice historical building. Worth a look if you can get inside
Awesome restored govt building. The renovated building preserved the characteristics of an old building and definitely takes you back in time.Upstairs bedrooms are converted into an art gallary and displays the work of australian artist William Robinson.Downstairs there is a cafe with courtyard converted into open sitting area with big stone walls.Cellar room in basement is preserved well, the narrow stairs with low head gap is spared rennovation and it goes so well with entire scheme of things. There is a virtual room that has 3D model of entire Govt house that you can navigate on screen using a xbox controllerHeritage well stored.
MoreBest historical visit in Brisbane! Great representation of the old government house, combined with video, directory map,3D visual technology, you will be able to explore and understand the old government house daily functions in the old times.Highly recommended ~
MoreI visited The Bowerbird and The Bride Exhibition which was a wonderful experience well worth the time to visit if you enjoy fine fabrics and fabulous craftmanship
MoreA beautifully restored piece of Brisbanes heritage. Modern and functional inside rather than being turned into a museum. Great event catering.
MoreThis is such a wonderful location to visit, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens in the city, with cafes, exhibitions and close to the walk bridge that takes you across the Brisbane River and onto Southbank. A must visit part of the City of Brisbane. There is currently an Exhibition of Miss Fishers Murder Mystery fashion, which is perfect for this location.
