There is a sense of the history here. Unfortunately a lot of clothes/curios shops are now set up in there, with crazy prices.

Underwhelming!Small structure, nothing great about its architecture.Multiple curio shops inside, which spoil the overall look and feel of an ancient structure to a modern day bazaar.Open air theatre is good.Tip: Can spend 15-20 min here. Shops are selling items at around 50% higher rates - bargain persistently.

Makes u appreciate the skill , the art , hardworking spirit of Africans to have done all these by their hands. Yet saddening knowing the magnitude of suffering they went through :(

Great place to hang out with friends or even by yourself as there are not many vendors who might approach you once you are inside. A beautiful historical monument.

Interesting place but when I tried to enter on my own the guy at the front desk asked me to pay 10 dollars. I turned around to leave but he said I could pass for free. Be aware!

Zanzibars old fort was built by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1699. It was used as a garrison and prison in the 19th Century. Also used as terminal of the Zanzibar Railways 1905 to 1928. A new guard house was built in 1947 and used as a ladies club. And an amphitheatre was added in the 1990s.When visiting Stone Town, you cannot miss the old fort. Its history tells the story of Zanzibar in a nutshell. It is free to visit, and cultural festivals and happenings are often organized in the inner courts of the fort.

There are not so many touristic highlights in Stone town, the old fort is one of those few (just sign in at the front desk for a free walk)...dont expect too much, a 10min walk will be enough, but take a look in the front tower for some nice paintings.

A piece of ancient history at the heart of Stone town. Built by the Omanis in the 17th century it has had many uses over the years. Now it is used as a traditional market where local items are being sold including paintings.More information about the place should be provided so as to educate the tourists visiting the same.

Stone town in general is beautiful for its history, and a world heritage site, but not well taken care of by the locals. Be sure to visit with your own personal guide so that you can tour at your own pace and leisure and avoid visiting with tour groups such as Africa Stay. You will be dragged around in the hot streets at a pace that doesnt suit you to stock standard spots, and will not be able to discover or enjoy the hidden gems.

Its beautiful and must visit place in Zanzibar.Only walls of fort are remaining and most of the space is used by the local shops selling variety of clothings, earrings, zanzibari doors, paintings and other small small things. Be the good bargainer if youre willing to buy things. The open stage is best example of ancient construction. If youre lucky you will find local artists performance.

Built or modified in the 17the century, this 400+ year old site is a must visit while in Zanzibar. nearby is a huge market where u can find literally anything. Just be prepared to strike a hard bargain. If u chance one of the numerous performances in the amphitheater within, its quite memorable. outside is a food market, the highlight is the sugarcane juice freshly squeezed with a ginger and ice.

Strategic monument on Mizingani road, this structure dates back to the Omani era of 1700. Used as a garrison for the Sultan and later a prison, this old and neglected site ought to be utilised for more functions and as a tourist attraction. Preservation is key to passing on history.

Well, the Old Fort is definitely a place to visit in Stone Town. Full of historic moments, full of story telling. To enjoy it fully, you really need a guide. We paid 10 000 tanzanian shilling for the Tour.

The Old Fort gives one a glimpse of what the Island must have been like during the time of its colonial occupation. The structure has a history onto its own, and is well worth visiting to gain a thorough overall insight into the earlier life of this great Island. Also, of course, it makes for beautiful pictures!

Great historical place. Coral and stone fortified. Wonderful atmosphere. Important point in the history of Zanzibar. Shopping opportunity in the fort though most expensive for the same regular stuff you will get elsewhere. Great amphitheatre inside the fort. Every year a music/ film festival organised here. Dont forget to climb the tower.

The Fort is one of the Oldest Structures in Zanzibar and dates back to the time when the Omani Arabs expelled the Portuguese. The Fort served as a depot during the construction of the 7 mile lone railway line to the village of Bububu. No remnants of the railway line appear to have survived. After about 09h00, shops and a gallery open in the courtyard and one of the towers.
