Old cathedral dating to the 16th century, now serving as a museum of religious artwork.
Great place for dinner or drinks!
Excellent place to explore and learn a out the Old cathedral. Walking inside was an experience thats worth the visit. You can also climb the stairs to the top of the observation level. Family friendly atmosphere with a wonderful view of the Park and El Centro. Definitely recommend while in Cuenca Ecuador.
Beautiful
The colors in this church are simply spectacular. The restoration of the church was impeccable. The attention to detail is amzing
On one side of the square, youll find an older white cathedral from Spanish colonial times. It is said that many of the stones within the churchs foundation were taken from the Cañari/Incan ruins nearby - before people realized they were destroying ancient history. The Antigua Cathedral is now a small museum, which costs a couple dollars to enter. They also host concerts, including free symphony concerts by the University. For more recommendations on what to do in and around Cuenca, find our blog posts by searching: "Intentional Travelers Cuenca"

Wonderful venue for symphony.
Enjoyed free Cuenca Symphony concert there. Nice ceiling paintings.
Beautiful Architectural History.
Beautiful and friendly city
Magnificent architecture, life-size statues of Jesus and the disciples, amazing acoustics. If you like history, plan a visit. They even hold concerts here.
What an incredibly beautiful concert by Coro MusArteh directed byAlex Rodriguez!! Wow!! 🎶💜💜💜💜🎵
Beautiful church nice architecture
I highly recommend the $3 tour inside the Old Cathedral. My tour guide presented fascinating information not only about the history of the cathedral but also interesting information about Cuenca. Through the admittance fee you’ll gain access to places most people wouldn’t think about. Enjoy walking up the spiral staircase to see the pipe organ up close or walk below to discover where many church members found their resting place starting back in the late 1500s. This church is often overlooked because of the newer and bigger cathedral across the street. But don’t miss this wonderful tour. And don’t forget to tip your tour guide.
Loved the 16th century architecture of this building. Sadly I didnt get opportunity to go inside, but the exterior was beautiful!
Decent old curch, worth the two USD in entrance
400 plus years old, and in great shape, but pales in comparison to the "new" cathedral across the square.
One of the best museums of religious art, it has pieces of Sangurima and Velez, who were known by the realism in their wood sculptures. It was really important for the French Geodessic Mission in 1736, thats why you can see a sign that says "Más célebre que las Pirámides de Egipto" it means more famous then the pyramids in Egypt because it helped to prove the correct shape of the Earth.
One of the greatest cathedral Ive ever seen.
More entertaining than the new one. Check the side rooms and go up!
Very interesting museum representing catholics beliefs. I was lucky enough to see the orchestra rehearsing on that day. Theres a coffee and souvenirs shop inside it.
Lots of amazing historical facts about the city and the cathedrals.
This is the New Cathedral (official name: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción). Its towers are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect. If they had been raised to their planned height, the foundation of this church to the Immaculate Conception, would not have been able to bear the weight. In spite of the architects immense mistake, the New Cathedral of Cuenca is a monumental work of faith that began to be built in 1880. It is in Neo-Gothic style, and its blue and white domes have become a symbol for the city. Its facade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy). When the Cathedral was first constructed 9,000 out of Cuencas 10,000 inhabitants could fit in the building.
