Comfortable restaurant serving inventive & traditional sushi creations plus bento boxes & udon soup.
Impossible to do business with. They are closed when they say they will be open and will not pick up their phone, or forgot to pay the bill so customers can call in for reservations. Avoid this place and hit up one of the other many sushi spots in town. They actually want your business.
I am so happy that ocean sushi has been able to stay open! The takeout service is efficient, and the safety practices to prevent virus transmission are well established. I highly recommend that you call in your order rather than walk up place it and wait for it cuz that will reduce your exposure to other people. But if you cant call it in go put your order in and its really fast. Aloha
My husband I visited here for lunch. He branched out and tried some new items hes never had before and enjoyed it all. Im a much more picky eater and stayed safe with the teriyaki chicken. The sauce was very good, and the rice was exceptional!
Really awesome food and great prices and friendly atmosphere
The Sushi is great, but the service not so much. The restaurant wasnt very busy, but it still took along time to get our food. We where going to order desert, but where told that it would take over 15 mins for us to get it, so we just paid and left.
This was one of my favorite restaurants in Hilo. They have the best California roll and Ive not found a better one on the mainland or Japan yet.
They have great sushi and the staff is generally very good. The atmosphere isnt top notch, but I give it 5 stars because it is my go to spot. Lots of nice memories here.
Great sushi and bento box!
Decent food and reasonable price. The Udon had a lot of noodles and stuff, broth had hot temperature.
Went in here and waited over 40 minutes for my food to arrive. I would have left but the waitress kept insisting my food was almost ready. Sushi is meh! You get what you pay for. Sushi seems like a good deal but then you see the portion, and it’s tiny.
Take out experience : It was horrible. We had to wait 40 minutes for take out (!and the restaurant was not even full.Sushis had WAY too much rice its incredible how much there was compared to the rest.Little 6ml soya sauce are super small, ask for more !BUT, during the 40 minutes waiting, everything served to other customers looked delicious so I may return there to eat in.
Impressive sushi, sashimi, expansive menu of Japanese and Hawaiian healthy preparations. We love the local tuna roll with macadamia nuts, bento boxes, and all the sushi options. Really nice service in a cute clean place. Busy during dinner hour and weekends, best to make reservations then. BYOB Take out is so ono.
Good sushi and nigiri, didnt try sashimi. Price for rolls decent. Nigiri prices good. Tempura platter overpriced.
The sashimi was so good! There was definitely a location tax, being in downtown Hilo, but I was glad I got to try it, anyhow. Rolls are a bit small and service is a tad slow, but the atmosphere was nice, overall. They had better sashimi options than, other restaurants whose menus I looked at.
Its our go to sushi place!! My Hubby tried the Oxtail soup for the first time and he was surprised how delicious it was. As for me, I always order the same...Chirashi deluxe. Plus we share the 15pc assorted sashimi....yum! Oh and the service is always great! Friendly and attentive staff
Very good sushi! Very affordable prices, too! Nice clean modern atmosphere, friendly staff. Very unassuming exterior, might be easy to miss but I wouldnt miss it if I were you.
The sushi is awesome, my favorite. The wasabi is pretty weak though, always gotta ask for more
We walked in at around 8:45 pm on a Friday. Most all other restaurants in the area would not have seated us. There was even another walk in after us, but decided to order take out rather than sit. Only place in Hilo that had salmon on their regular menub that we could find online. It could be prepared several ways. Pan fried was what we were looking for last night. The plate was served with 3 pieces of salmon, 2 scoops of rice and i chose tossed greens, garnished with lemon slices. The 3 pieces were approx 4 oz each. We ordered a sushi roll, hosomaki and shumai as well. They served the sushi and shumai in about 10 min and said it was last call. We were very hungry but felt we had ordered enough. The salmon came a few minutes later. I ate everything except 1 scoop of rice. My girlfriend brought home 2 pieces of salmon, rice, 1 each shumai and hosomaki piece. It was GOOD! We were the last to leave. The friendly staff had closed the doors about 9:15, but we didnt feel rushed at all. We walked out around 9:30. Our bill was $50.81. I was so pleased with the menu, service and food; i left a 20% tip. I woke up this morning wanting to go there again for more sushi. bc
Good food. Quite busy which resulted in along wait for food. Staff was pleasant and attentive. Making sushi takes time so if you dont mind a wait when they are busy eat there. If you are in a hurry check the number of patrons before you sit down.
Reasonably priced, however the sushi was was luke warm. Not recommended.
Great selection, service and prices! Delicious!
Warm fish and rice, sashimi was small thin pieces, rolls look terrible, and stay away from the deep fried Mochi ice cream which is missing the ice cream.
Great food and reasonable prices. Big selection to chose from. Our Ohana was visiting Hilo for a funeral and we all went here for dinner after the services over 20 or us. We already had reservations and it was all ready once we got there. Service was great and there were no complaints. I orders the deluxe Chirashi. It was one of the best Ive had. Rice was perfect and a variety of raw fish, ebi, uni, egg, etc. Will definitely go back next time in Hilo! 🤙🏽
Awesome food! For dessert, their green tea ice cream is the best!
Dined in with a party of 5 around 545pm on a Saturday night and got lucky with a no wait time, with a few tables open. Ordered the Platter "U" (top in 2nd picand Platter "G" ( bottom in 2nd pic), also ordered Platter "M" (first pic). Way too much for our party but we were fine with taking the rest to go. Everything was tasty and made to order. No hard rice or stale fish pieces. The staff was friendly and always checked on our drinks for refills. It did get a little warm as the fans were not spinning at full speed with a lot of people seated. Clean dining area. I love this place way more than Genki and found the portions bigger too. 5 stars for the great food and service.
Decided to give them another try. This time it was better than my last experience. I like that we can bring our own alcohol beverages. The waitress serving us was nice & friendly. The place was clean & I enjoyed my shrimp tempura & teriyaki chicken plate. It was super delicious. 😁
Somehow the sushi here is both beautifully well made and inexpensive. The service is also great. Dont know why I waited so long to check this place out.
Very good food and great service. We ate here for our anniversary. Best sushi I have had. Next time we visit the Big Island we will come back.
My favorite place to eat out at!Rolls are always fresh and delicious! Everything is priced perfectly, even for those of us frugal folks.Great for family meal, or night out with friends! Byob and sushi- my kind of night out ;)
The food was very good, however the service was slow. We were seated for at least 8 - 10 minutes before someone brought us water. We had to wait another 5 to 10 minutes before our waitress came by to take our drink order. We did not get to the restaurant until 8 pm, and they close at 9. By the time we received our food it was almost 9 oclock and I felt rushed to finish eating and leave the restaurant. Our waitress was friendly and the food was good.
If you want to eat and a real hand crafted, fresh sushi kind of place this is where you go. Huge variety. Good tasting food. Its not only sushi there too, they have Japanese style plates for people who arent really fish eaters.
Service was kind of slow, even though there werent that many people at the restaurant. Some of the raw tuna had visible blood vessels, which kind of freaked my husband out. (Weve eaten lots of sushi, and had not seen this before)
The fish here did not taste fresh, and when you first walk in it smells like a bathroom. This place has dim florescent lighting. Service was ok, presentation was better than the food. We ordered nigiri only to see what the fish was like first, and was glad we did. The fish was exceptionally fishy instead of fresh, and flavorful. I dont know what the competition is like here, but Id skip this place all together
For the price, you get good sushi and friendly service. I love the ahi salmon chirachi, the deluxe is also delicious. They have the classics and some specials...hospital roll? Yep, yummy!
Had way higher expectations for this place. Sushi was very dry tasting. Service very slow(busy place). Good thing is BYOB! And prices are not bad. Won’t be returning though.
Wonderful place in Hilo for Japanese favorites. The food was fresh and plentiful.
We came to Ocean Sushi on our last night in Hilo because the menu looked promising. We were looking for a few rolls and a quick bite. When we arrived it was busy and it took 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged, there were three other groups/couples that arrived after us and were waiting to be acknowledged as well. Finally one person went to the take-out counter to request service. A few minutes later the take-out person arrived to write our names down, the person was seemingly upset, not friendly and had as minimal interaction with us possible. We were seated within five minutes of our names being written (20 minutes after arrival and by the same upset silent person). Once we were seated, we were immediately served water - but did not meet our server for another 10 minutes. Our server was kind, but, like everyone else working, looked overwhelmed. Finally after 50 minutes since we walked in the door, we were discussing leaving, even though our order was already placed - because we did not want to wait any longer, and we had not been acknowledged once since our order was placed. During that discussion our meal was brought out (ironic timing...and we discovered our only positive experience there that night - which was that the rolls were excellently crafted, very flavorful, simple and fresh. Very delicious. However, one of the rolls ordered was supposed to include macadamia nuts (the Big Island roll), and macadamia nuts could not be found. We were highly disappointed in our service experience here. And though the food was absolutely delicious, it was not worth the time and lack of acknowledgement. We were kind to the staff, when we actually interacted with them.... but ended up paying and walking out without anyone noticing.
Okay sushi. Okay prices. Tea was kinda weak. There servers were nice. The place is very nicely decorated, minimalist modern design aesthetic.
The sushi was delicious! The staff wasnt thrilled to be there- and it was busy, but our food came fairly quickly. The first time Ive ever seen a BYOB restaurant, wish I had known to bring my own!
The food is reasonable and tasty. Not too expensive for what you get. Wait time was a little long. Wait staff was friendly and courteous.
Great prices and high quality sushi. More rice in rolls than expected and they dont serve alcohol, but you can bring your own. Wish I knew that before going!
We got there 30 min before they close between lunch and dinner but the staff were super friendly and very pleasant. The sushi. Is. Amazing. And cheap!Definitely worth the stop in Hilo. There were lots of locals here so clearly they agree. We plan on coming back next time we visit the big island.
Serving previously frozen salmon must be some kind of crime in Japan, but obviously not in Hawaii..... I had the worst Salmon Teriyaki ever in this restaurant. It was so dry and chewy I had to send it back. This should not be allowed to happen in a Japanese restaurant. To their credit, they replaced it with some vaguely decent chicken after I explained how bad the salmon was. I understand Hawaii has some special logistical issues regards fresh produce, but even if the Salmon was frozen, there are better ways to defrost it so it doesnt lose its consistency and flavour. Not good enough.
Best sushi on big Island, hands down, and very affordable. I go here everytime Im in Hilo and just feast on delicious sushi.
Had this and Dragon Kitchen on consecutive days. The poke chirashi has a lot more rice here (perhaps meant as a solo entree?). If youre looking for sushi (albeit with less optionsId recommend Dragon over Ocean, theyre only a few minutes apart.
Picked up some take-out tonight. The rolls taste great but portions are pretty skimpy. Must have a pretty sharp knife to cut the sashimi in such small pieces.
Super nice staff. Great sushi and the price cant be beat. Theres other very good sushi places in town, but this is still my favorite. 🍣
The quality of the service and food have definitely gone down. I hope the wait time to be seated & served shortens next time, but I doubt it will. My friend and I became impatient just waiting around for a waiter to bring us a glass of water (took over 40 minutes after constantly asking for it). Some of the waiters are also very rude & tend to be forgetful. Also, the noise level gets way to out of hand in there! My friend and I were basically screaming at each other in order to have a conversation.
This place has affordable and good quality sushi. The look of the place here and at the old location was always undecorated white. Sometimes the sushi is really good, but more often just good. If you live in town and just want some sushi this is a good place to go. If you are a tourist and want fresh Hawaiian delicacies and cute decor, look elsewhere.
Incredible! Dont be fooled by appearance. Extremely high quality fish and creative, delicious rolls at insanely inexpensive prices. Im very picky about sushi and have eaten at Nobu, among other places, and I would gladly eat at Ocean Sushi over them. Excellent miso soup as well.
