O Tasco - Portuguese restaurant in Funchal, Portugal
Authentic, good food and friendly staff. Been here several times now, and never dissapointed! Must try: octopus. Fresh fish always good. Compliments for the chef ;-)
We went without booking a table and even though all the tables where reserved they fitted us in within 20 minutes. The service and food was excellent and the staff friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.
Loved the place! Its my birthday today and the guys were absolutely amazing! They prepared the table very quickly. The dishes were fantastic and at the end they surprised me with a birthday cake and sang happy birthday! Made my day! Highly recommended! Best place in Madeira.
We loved this cosy local “off the beaten tourist path” restaurant. They bring you in and show you what they got fresh that day. Everything is prepared right there and is totally fresh!
It was potentially a 4 star. But we are pretty sure we got sick from the snail. Half our group had it and they were sick for days.
We had a lovely meal, consisting of a few starters, mains, sides, and a dessert. Everything was wonderful; especially the fresh, perfectly cooked fish varieties. The fried corn and sweet potato were both excellent sides and the fish nuggets & octopus tasted delicious. The wine recommendation was good. Tasty, filling, & affordable meal for three w/reservation (€82.50)
Excellent food. I normally do not eat fish but the fish I got in this restaurant was one of the best.Very nice staff and reasonable price for the quality.
This place is an absolute gem, few steps from a road full of tourist traps. Just walk a bit more, go up the hill and in few hundred meters you will find excellent fish, fresh, cooked to perfection. People working there are really honest and kind, I strongly suggest everyone to go there.
Amazing cozy restaurant and really nice staff. You have to order at the bar where the waiter explains you about all dishes. Especially good were limpets and octopus snacks. We have ordered different fishes as main dish and all of them were exceptional. Best side dish - beetroot salad. Passion fruit mousse and cheese cake was delicious.
Soup was frozen from the freezer, hogfish and sweet potato was very good.
Stopped for a octopus sandwich a drink, really really nice food. Was taken in to the restaurant to see the menu and some of the food on offer, the kitchen area is right by the bar and the smells coming out were amazing. The staff were very welcoming and friendly will definitely be going back for an evening meal.
Very nice food, good price. Nice friendly staff.
The restaurant is very nice and the people are very friendly. The food was quite good and the way they present the menu is cool. Only when you sit outside it can get loud from the cars driving by.
Fantastic fresh and local food. Atmosphere is calm and welcoming. Really like the fact they took the time to talk you through the menu.
DELICIOUS.Super fresh fish from the market - typical cuisine from Madeira, but with a concept : no real menu, instead they will explain the offering and fish of the day inside in front of the kitchen. Just choose different sizes of the dishes (mini, medium, largeand share the food à la tapas.Nicely situated - a bit outside of the busy center and über-friendly staff.
We arrived there a quarter to 9 pm and they had a table in the restaurant for us. They excused in the beginning for a delay to place the order. So what the hell if the drinks come in time. We were asked to get the choice of menu at the bar. What a nice service. He spoke German English French and explained everything very nice and made us easy to decide. The tuna was more than perfect.. It was brilliant with the herbs. The parrot fish was good as well. And the starters were a good choice. We try to get a reservation for tomorrow because this was a highlight for us. Thanks to the chef thanks to the service. We love you

It was recommended by my hotel lady and I came for breakfast and it was delicious . Everything is super fresh , the service is wonderful , the place is a bit far from the center and town but if you have a car or would like to walk 15 -20 minutes , totally worth it for coffee and just relax . There is nothing around but the restaurant but I truly enjoyed the atmosphere ..
Amazing food, great service, fresh lemonade, cold beer and good wine selection. Octopus salad was amazing and the chips were the best weve had in Madeira so far
The food was very good, but nothing really special to be worth walking all the way to the end of Green Line road. No menus, just a list on the wall. Very good artisanal beer though. Not busy during lunch, but the owner recommended reservations for dinner.
O Tasco offers an amazing selection of local dishes in a superb quality. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant is located at a small and quiet square where you can catch the last rays of the sun in the evening.
So good I went twice during a short one week trip. Cannot suggest strongly enough. Wonderful seafood with inspirations from all over the island. Obviously a chef that cares, is passionate, and has a vision. On Tuesdays they have live music, which during my visit was a violinist playing really enjoyable takes on modern music. Staff was great, helpful and friendly.
The best dinner experience that we had on Madeira. Limited menu (3 types of fish, meat skewers, and half a dozen sides, plus delicious looking seafood plates to share). Everything was fresh and tasty, and service was simple yet friendly. Quality food and wines. Outstanding, really!
So great. Great music. Great service. Excellent food! We listened to violin play Bohemian Rhapsody while enjoying our first scabbard fish roe. Such a lovely evening.
Found this lovely place on our first night of our holiday to Funchal on our way home from dinner and stopped for a drink. Very lively place, and lovely, friendly staff! came back on our penultimate night, and when we said we had no reservation they said wait 5 minutes and came out with a spare table outside for us! lovely food, very well laid out display and description/recommendations of the food. My Beef skewers were incredible and the drinks were just as good! Overall a very enjoyable meal for all, Muito Obrigado!
We had to make a reservation as the restaurant seems to be really busy during weekends. The food was tasty, we had tuna steak and beef skewers with octopus and fish tapas as appetizers as well as chocolate/lemon cake as deserts; nothing special but everything was fresh. Good house wine. I especially enjoyed the staff and the violin ambiance was something else. As downside I have to mention the awfully "menu inside order outside" as its just stupid. It was also somehow more expensive than its rivals. Still, I do recommend it.
When we arrived they did not have any free tables outside, but they offered to put a table out for us in five minutes while we waited at the bar - absolutely professional! The menu was kind of interactive in the kitchen and the choices all looked very delicious. We went for the fish and have not been disappointed. 100% recommendation for this awesome place. Waiters speak good English and cards are accepted.
Simply put: Probably one of the best restaurants on Madeira. Fantastic fish, extraordinary service and very relaxing atmosphere. Wonderful!
Service is good and friendly. I had tuna as main dish and potatoes, sweet potatoes and octopus as side dishes.Everything is very tasty.
We are sitting outside O Tasco right now and are stunned by the atmosphere and the outstanding quality of the meals. Highly recommended if you prefer a unique place afar from touristy spots. Very attentive staff! We will come again. Make sure to reserve a table at the weekend.
Had a lovely evening service here with a starter choice of pulpo, atun and scabbard nuggets, followed by the tuna skewers. The wine selection was excellent and the view on the cliffs from our table outside were very nice. The staff are extremely friendly, speak seemingly any co conceivable language and are very attentive. Definitely coming again! :)
We prebooked and on arrival were shown straight to our table and then were left there for 10 minutes before being attended to, okay it was quite busy but thats the only bad point. When the waiter came, he explained the system then took us through to the kitchen and showed us the choices. We had the four taster dishes for starters which were lovely then both had tuna skewers for mains. He seemed delighted when we asked for them rare and they were beautifully cooked and delicious. The food, wine and service were all perfect after the slow start.
Great restaurant, best fish we had in Funchal. Fresh and prepared with care. Very reasonably priced for the quality of food. We came back two evenings in a row because didnt fancy eating at the tourist traps in Rue da santa Maria. Locals eat here too. Definitely recommend.
Very interesting restaurant. They are a fish restaurant and do not have a written menu, but take you to display by kitchen and talk you through different size portions, and local catch of the day. The manager is very hands on and discusses everything thing. He went right through the wines on display to suggest a suitable one for my wife and I.We had chicken on a stick, with vegetables and french fries. The food was hot and tasted delicious.
Great out-of-the-way eatery. Great staff and a unique way of explaining the menu. May be the best place we visited in Funchal.
A hidden gem!Had lunch here today and was extremely tasty! Not the cheapest place to eat but certainly not the most expensive ether! Well worth it. Everything cooked to order, lovely atmosphere and very friendly and attentive staff. We hope to eat here again before we leave Madeira.
Delicious food and reasonable price - we chose sharing tapas starter and then fish which came as a large slice cooked simply with steamed vegetables. Good atmosphere and busy restaurant - they were happy to fit us in even though they were fully booked.
Simply one of the best restaurant experiences I can think of, from start to finish. Friendly service, including by the owners, who take you to the service counter to show you the options for the evening. Choice of several Madeiran specialities, including fried polenta (divineand grilled limpets (please, do not knock until you have tried!!! Think somewhere between calamari and mussels, and more flavoursome than either). Excellent fresh local fish; fried scabbard fish nuggets, dry aged tuna, trigger fish, parrot fish and sea bass, and the best Poncha we tried the whole time we were here. Also with the best selection of wines and Portuguese beers, and dessert to die for. Its like being invited into a new friends house for dinner, without all of the usual tat and tackiness you might expect from a more tourist oriented restaurant. Here they have decided to do a few things really well, and they have pulled it off brilliantly. Will definitely be coming back soon. Obrigado!!
Everything was great! Flawless service, nice menue with a good selection and nice and clean toilets. And wonderful location.
2018.02.06. Excelent dinner with friendly staff! 5 star, absoutely recommended! 2018.02.08. Another day, another amazing dinner in O Tasco! We ate grilled limpets as starter, than trigger fish, parrot fish with sweet potato and mixed vegetables! My wife told me about the taste of the fishes: I hope this moment will never end!😁😂 So OBRIGADO Marco and all the staff!
Very very good! Lapas were a bit chewy but the variety of options were great, and the price was excellent. Sea snails were lovely, fried roe was unlike anything Id ever had before and it was delicious.
The Best limpets on Madeira. All dishes is great. Good prices and staff.
Our favorite restaurant in Funchal!! We came here twice on our trip and tried most things on the menu. They do a chalk board menu and walk to to the kitchen counter to show you all the food. Our favorite was the parrot fish, fried maize, broad beans salad, beetroot salad and the octopus! The service is very good and the patio is lovely! Please go here on your trip!!
Amazing food at a great price just a short walk from old town. The food is the daily catch and has just amazing flavours without too much fuss. The prices are about half youd pay in the touristy old town, the restaurant nicer and it also has a nice and calm feel. The best restaurant Ive been in in Madeira. When taking price into account Id say its even better than Uva.Strongly recommend a visit here. Also, technically has an ocean view :)
Everything we had was great and he only comments we could et from our neighbouring tables was "it is simply divine"
Well worth a few yards walk up the hill from the end of Santa Maria. Friendly host talked us through the menu - showing us samples of dishes. Fish is the speciality here, but meat dishes are also available. We enjoyed good fresh fish simply cooked with sides of milho frito and fresh mixed veg. Good food, good service, good atmosphere - reasonable prices - multilingual, but not a tourist place - filled up while we were there - popular with locals and visitors alike.
Great little restaurant, with nice staff and amazing food. Its all fresh and has an open kitchen, so what you see is what you get.The O Tasco is in the beautiful old part of Funchal with a nice view to the sea and some walking minutes away from the annoying promotion guys.So it a really nice and quiet place to eat great food, many locals know enjoy this place, too.
Nice and good little restaurant! Staff is very friendly. There is no menu, you get everything explained by the waitress. Very cool! Fresh and tasty fish with a lot of sides. Unfortunately there was on all dishes a little to less salt.
Very good restaurant with friendly staff. They have samples of food to show, so you know what you are ordering in advance. We had Lapas as starter followed with tuna skewers for my wife and parrot fish for me. Everything was perfect.
Very quiet and nice restaurant in the limits of Feichal. The fish is fresh and very tasty and the octopus one of the best I had in a long time completely adaptable to your needs. It is slightly more expensive than other places in the city but it is worth it.
