Nyköpingshus - Historical landmark in Nykoping, Sweden
Lovely beyond all measure
Take a stroll along the Nyköping river and find Nyköpingshus. It is a Beautifully preserved castle that you can go into.
This amazingly old castle is probably very interesting but no tours are offered in English. Read up on it before you go if you don’t speak Swedish. The outdoor Danish cafe on the grounds is excellent.
Lovely place
We came late so we couldn’t get in the castle but the view was nice for a little family getaway. The place was surrounded with lots of restaurants and cafes, too.
A great museum and fantastic beautiful surroundings
Free entrance. Museum in the tower of Nyköpingshus. The exhibitions included medieval times and the peak period of the castle. They also offer free guided tours.
Classic
Nice castle
Paid parking required for a historical castle with a bloody history very similar to the red wedding in the game of thrones. Although the architecture was great and the castle itself is free to visit with a fair selection of historical tidbits, in all honest truth it was not something that I would visit again or vividly remember in the future.Food at the Cafe on the castle grounds was good, but a tad pricey.
Queit nice museum but a bit small. Very friendly museum staff.
This is just beautiful. A place full of history and culture or just to catch some sun in the summer.
Fantastic 😍😘♥️🌹
Nice old castle, havent been inside, but beautiful on the outside.
Just as expected
An old castle that has burned down a couple of times. Not as impressive as it used to be (I assumebut still worth a visit. Three different exhibitions in the castle; the old days 13th century, the renaissance and modern time 19th century when the castle was used as a prison. We also took a guided tour of the castle named “walls, besieged and defence “ that was really good. Also stroll over to the pond where you can see the rare red water lilys,
Very interesting historical site. Excellent staff, ambitious exhibitions and good for kids, too.
An iconic, historical place, a must-see when in town. In the summer, there are markets with merchants and actors in costume.
Well kept and beautiful.
Nice, with Swedish history all over.
Stillness. Beauty. Sweden.
Historic place. Not so much to see
Good time looking into the prehistoric history of Nyköping. It’s free and the staff are very friendly.
Great castle and the museum!
Beautiful old swedish house in the castle. Free to visit
You can learn many things about the history of this place and the city
Very nice and free entrance.
Very nice place
Nyköping Castle in Nyköping, Sweden, is a Mediaeval castle from the Birger Jarl era, partly in ruins. The castle is mostly known for the Nyköping Banquet which took place here in 1317.Construction on the castle is thought to have begun at the end of the 12th century, when it was built as a sort of castellum. It is thought Birger Jarl expanded the building to a larger castle. During the reign of Albert of Sweden the castle was held as a fief by the German knight Raven van Barnekow, who made important improvements on the building, and later by Bo Jonsson Grip. Further reconstructions and expansions were done during the late Middle Ages. Gustav Vasa strengthened the castle further for defensive purposes and a round gun tower from that time remains today. The medieval castle was rebuilt in the end of the 16th century by Duke Charles (later Charles IX of Swedeninto a renaissance palace. The palace burned down with the rest of the city in 1665. It wasnt reerected; in fact some of its bricks were used in the construction of Stockholm Palace. However, parts of the castle were sound enough to be used as county residence until the 1760s.Parts of the castle were refurbished in the 20th century. Kungstornet (the Kings Towerand Gamla residenset (the Old Residencecurrently house the permanent exhibits of Sörmlands museum (the Museum of Södermanland). A restaurant is located in the banquet hall and Drottningkällaren (the Queens Cellar).
Great place for those interested in Medieval Swedish history. The kids loved the rat-hunt.
This is castle is by a rivers and is a great history lesson.
One of the good destination in the town . You can go there and take good pictures . Peaceful and silent
Wow museum with a lot of interesting info and awesome paper models of castle and some scenes of life.
Quaint little city close to Stockholm Skavasta airport. We were waiting for our train to Stockholm and had an hour so went to a nearby castle. The history was rich and there was also a stream outside of it. Spent a good hour.
This is an unexpected gem in the town of Nyköping. The museum is located in the Kings Tower part of the old castle. We thought we would be there 15 minutes. We spent over two hours. Admission is free. English language guides are provided on each level of the tower. You can learn a lot about the last thousand years of Swedish history outside of Stockholm. For example, what crimes would put you in jail in medieval Sweden and for how long? Another plus, no tour groups.
The guided tour that had some parts acted out was good, but the place itself was not that impressive to me.
Good familj event, kids loved the guiding
The place itself is well planned. Obviously. I guess kids would like it very much.
Nice museum with friendly staff. Castle was closed for an event, I wish they had put that on their website or opening hours, which I searched for.
We visited on a sunday, coincidentally there was a special activity for children where you had to find plush mice and rats. The children had a lot of fun searching and counting them. For their efforts they got a cool coloring with the image of an old print. The Museum itself is small but very nice, the information is well presented and there is a lot to discover. Sometimes the presentation is a bit dark. Lightwise as well as imagewise, so sensitive children might be a bit intimidated. On some weekends, there are theatrical tours with actors, guiding though the history of this place, very nice idea!
Very nice mediaeval castle with beautiful surroundings
Superb castle with a really top notch catering staff, buly the way.
Interesting historical place. Nykoping banquet and dungeon lock, plot to historical crime.
Nyköpingshus is a great place to visit and get the feeling of royal life in past.
Hope to be blessed and fortunate enough one day to get a opportunity to have my path lead me here, I pray every day without fail to Our Father, God Almighty, to strengthen my faith that He will provide me with a path to follow to assist me on my journey of forgiveness and redemption.
Very nice to walk through and around. Though the information could be more present in english as well.
Nice place , you can walk around here for free :)
Downtown of Nyköping is small (the town itself is small), not much to do or see, but proximity to airport makes it a good opportunity to escape for few hours.
Please note that the castle is open every day at 11 AM until 5 PM between June 1 until Agust 30.
The old castle has a ritch history. In the summer they have a show called Nyköpings gästabud that you cant miss if you woul like a bit of history about old swedish kings. If its a sunny day its perfect to have a picknick blanket and basket with you to chill a bit in the sun and in the winter you can go skating on the pond or go down the castle ramparts with your sleigh.
