Nur - Moroccan restaurant in Fes, Morocco
The worst meal in Morocco. A huge disappointment.
Great restaurant in the Fez Medina. Hidden behind a door in one of the many alleyways lies a modern upscale Riad-style restaurant. We had the 9 course menu: the food was delicious, well paced, and overall had a great evening. This is probably not for everyone - it is on the pricier side by Moroccan standards, and while “Moroccan-inspired” sometimes it is not Moroccan food per say.
Decent food. Super overpriced.
I wish I could post 0 stars. We prepaid for the 3 glass wine pairing....we waited for over an hour and didnt get a single glass of wine or a single bite of food. We had to personally get up and walk around to try and get some water. When I was asked about allergies, I listed the white fish that is an issue, and the staff was visibly flustered and offered a vegetarian option...it took just over an hour to get out the first course, which was a raw slice of bellpepper and sauce next to it. After a long day of walking in Fez, we were so hungry we had to head out...and Nur kept most of the deposit, because the white fish Im allergic to was on the menu, so they wanted me to pay for the unused fish. Horrible in restaurant service and even worse customer care.
Update: just went tonight after it had been closed for COVID. Had the 3-course bistro menu…absolutely amazing experience!!One of the best restaurants in Fes. There’s an 8-course gastronomic tasting menu, which is beautiful, creative, and delicious. The chef uses fresh ingredients found in the souk each day, but it’s not what you would normally consider Moroccan cuisine. I believe it’s possible to request fewer courses, depending on your budget. And from time to time they have a 3-course bistro menu. The setting is also lovely...a small traditional Fes house decorated in an elegant modern fashion. It was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal as one of the "Worlds Most Beautiful Restaurants."
Amazing food in an amazing space! If you only have one night in Fes make sure you eat here!
Very deceitful experience, given the price paid (240€ for 2pax).Most dishes were barely warm, and there were huge differences between them: a few of them were really good, but many of them lacked coherence in terms of taste, not technically very interesting. The place itself : I was litterally freezing, and since we had to stay there for 4 full hours (hard to believe how slow it was...I got a pretty nasty cold.Service : staff was very friendly but pretty unprofessional, disorganised, inefficient.Wine: well, the wine pairing is a scam. I was charged 10€/glass for pretty standard wine that had barely any interest and which actual full bottle costs around 8€...
We had enough authentic Moroccan food to last a lifetime. Then, we arrived at Nur. To say that this was a beautiful, modern oasis in the middle of the Medina is truly an understatement. We had signed up for the menu accompanied by wines ( to much wine for just two of us - so order the wine when you arrive).Every dish was not only a work of art, but the combination of flavors were amazing. Every dish presented was flawless. My husband and I ate every morsel of every course (even trying things we normally don’t eat. I only wish that we could visit again!
Hello Sharing With u my Review. Amazing Place i enjoyed the dégustation menu in September. One of the Rare place that u Can see a very créative chef. Bravo fr the gros work as son as i go tout Fez o will comme to visite. BRAVO. THE ONLY THING i didnt like is When the waiter asked if would like the drinks menu web answerd no were gros with San Pell we were vert inconfortable with hes réactions. Small thing but sometimes it ruin the expérience. Other than it was all cool.
We booked on tock and had to pay in advance for the dinner a total of 240€ for 2 Merry tasting menu and wine pairing of 2 wines. So we were expecting an amazing culinary experience. While, the products are tops and food delicate, savory, and very well prepared and presented, none of the dishes arrived warmed, but they were all lukewarm. Service is very very long, we stayed 3 hours and a half. Service is also unprofessional, they forgot our wine pairing, finally served after the 5th dish when I asked a waitress about it. They also regularly forgot to change or to bring cutlery when they bring new dishes to the table. And the worse at the end of the dinner, there was supposed to be a surprise: a wooden box filled with chocolates and candies from Spain. We have seen it on other’s guests tables. We and the couple next to us, did not received the surprise. Instead we had to pick the chocolates and candies directly in metal boxes. Why not treating ourselves like the other customers? We paid the same price! Probably because it was almost 00h30 and they wanted to close the restaurant, but we customers should not be paying for the slowness of the service and/or kitchen. Especially when u pay so much money. Remember we are in Morocco, 240€ for 2 persons is a lot of money here! I was very disappointed by the experience. You should not spend your time and money there. I am not recommending this restaurant despite the fine cuisine.
Really, really good. Let them know your allergies (not fun, but necessary), then just enjoy whatever the kitchen want to put on your plate. Lots of amazing fish, excellent wine, lovely people. Not cheap, but good value if you want to splash out
What a fabulous place, deep in the twisted tiny dark alleys of Fez! We ate here three times in the 2 weeks in Fez; the food is innovative and delicious - maybe Moroccan inspired but very international edgy. The chef had just been to Barcelona (for one day!to get an award when we attended a cooking class- just me, my husband and her (& staff doing the full hits for us!). Amazing woman and really worth it if you are a foodie. Staff delightful and attentive.
Worth the money for a delicious 8 courses. Best restaurant in Fes.
Best restaurant in Fez with excellent display of techniques with high level skills. Special applauses to the floor staff.
As a Moroccan, I wanted to bring some friends back to their hotel after they finished their dinner, I was surprised by the staff of this restaurant asking me to leave...and they told me that they don’t accept the guides inside their restaurant as one of their policy, It’s shame to be treated like that in your own country...it’s ridiculous.
One of the best experiences, has an incredible essence. The food is spectacular, the service excellent.Magical
The food is really delicious. It is sencational experience, every detail in the food, in the service makes it become one of the best dinners.
They say its 11 courses, but they only delivered 8. It took almost four hours, with sometimes 30-45 minutes between courses. The food was not good. I tried cancelling three times and they refused. My credit card company called after to dispute the transaction and the Manager, Maria, said shed refund the charge, which they didnt. I would highly discourage anyone from wasting their money at this unimaginative, mess of a restaurant in this beautiful city.
Had my birthday meal there and it was fabulous !The menu is very creative and tasty, the dessert was to die for (not very sweet just the best end of a nice culinary experience)Must do when in fez !
Nur is a gem in the heart of Fes. If you’re looking for a unique culinary experience, hurry and get your reservation now!We chose the tasting menu of eight courses as well with a flight of wine. The menu is very much on the fly and table staff are unsure what is being served until it arrives at your table. We saw some tables that had similar dishes, some with modifications and others had something totally different. The flavors were unexpected, the presentation was beautiful and the restaurant staff was so wonderful to interact with.Don’t miss this restaurant on your visit to Fes.
One of the finest and memorable meals of my life. Bests Michelin rated spots I have visited. I will come back to Fes just to dine at Nur again!
Amazing! Incredible restaurant, with the est chef in Marrocow!! A must see and try for anyone coming yo Fes.
We did the 10 course tasting menu and it was an Absolutely incredible experience.
This place is definitly a "tourist trap". The claiming of best restaurant in Morocco is 100% wrong. The restaurant is in the old Fès Medina. Behind a "secret door" you find a lovely fusion decorated restaurant. Staying on the visual aspect, the plates are very well presented. A very good work has been done on this side but positive aspects stops here. This restaurant is the quintessence of the Instagram era: everything "looks" nice, you will have nice pictures, but the content is poor, if not absent. The price is totally abusive for the quality of both food and service. You could get way better value for money in the city and in the country. The flavors are randomly dispatched and there is 0 harmony in it. Some plates are ruined because way too sweet (eg: The Safran Meringueor with poor arrogant choices (eg: the shark filet with no tastes)The cuisine is (be careful on that95% NOT inspired by Morocco so do not expect to be on a Moroccan gastronomic journey. The waiters cannot explain properly what is in the plate and the "pairing" with the Morrocan wines is just to avoid. They just bring you wine, no pairing. We do not recommend.
Highly NOT recommended. I just wanted to take a look inside the building as it is Palais Mnebhi in the first place, then the restaurant. But the guy standing in front of the door didn’t let me even quickly check interior, even just through the door. He was extremely rude and very unkind... At the same time he invited restaurant guests with his (dishonestsmile. I bet this is the true face of service in this place.
Supper difficult. On the restaurants website it says *Named "Worlds Best Moroccan Restaurant 2017"!Nur offers fine dining in the Medina of Fes featuring the flavors of the Middle Atlas through a creative lens*The problem is just that most of the courses did not have anything in common with marrocane cuisine or where that much in the background, that it does not fit the restaurants description anymore. When we have asked for the marrocane components of the courses, the restaurant even lied to us.Don’t get us wrong, some of the courses where pretty good in taste, but nothing exceptional (classic upper class restaurant). Also for the price -about 150€ for a fix menue, we feel cheated again on the description. You are not paying for a satisfying food experience.Same courses contained a lot of caviar for example, this was hilarious in the arrangement of the course. It felt like „we need to put the caviar on the course“ to explain the price for the menue, because in the total composition it didn’t make any sense considering the taste. We travel all over Marokko for food and this was super much disappointing for us.
Amazing selection of food. The place is gorgeous and the chef is one of a kind
We ate here for Christmas dinner and is was a HUGE disappointment. We asked for salt and they refused to bring any and said to use the almonds they brought instead. Its like the chef has gotten so in to micro preparing each dish, they have forgotten they are a restaurant. Also, our guide told us it is in a bad area of Fes. So after walking away hungry and disappointed, not mention a hugely priced bill for Morocco, you have to worry about how to get back to your Riad. This is the only review I have ever posted on Google...thats how marginal it was. Our Riad Dar 7 Louyat had far superior food and carried the "superior Moroccan wine" NUR serves.
Contemporary Moroccan degustation. Fantastic food! If you are looking for a fancy dinner then I recommend this place over other degustations in Fes (or all of Moroccobecause it still keeps the food Moroccan rather than French or more international.
Well that was a waste of health and moneySo, where to start....First, we came to this place for the CV of the chef, Alinéa, El Buli and others with also quotes from Ferran himself. We thought it would be a wonderful experience, even though the price was 10 times more expensive than average price in Fez.Food:Their website describe it as such:Nur offers fine dining in the Medina of Fes featuring the flavors of the Middle Atlas through a creative lens.So obviously, we were expecting getting close to Moroccan flavors. Here is a non exhaustive list of ingredients which were surprising to find: shittake mushrooms, red caviar, black caviar but why not if it make sense in the story of the dish. But it does not.You feel like dishes have been put together without any thoughts behind, as copycatting minimalist plates from 15 years ago without work on how to make it their own....Only one ingredient per plate would be connecting with Moroccan roots....It just does not work. The apotheosis of deception was the first dessert, it feels like they did not know what to choose on this plate so they basically throw everything on it...The second one was marshmallow with chocolate on top... Like we are 12 in the campfire....The wine:1 glass was 11$..... For ok wine. The service:Chaotic. The English although not their native tongue should be understood well enough by the staff to explain us the dish not just give us the ingredients its the base of fine dinning... The management should train their staff better.I am not a native speaker myself but I know how to explain my business in English if someone is asking. They did not have any Logic in changing the cutlery. Sometime yes sometimes no, sometime you get a meat knife... and they serve you mushrooms...Sometimes they change yours but not the lady with you...As it is forced to give 10% of the meal for service you do expect a good one for $20 dollars only for service for two in Morocco. The location:We are in Morocco, land of amazing mesmerizing riads, those were not making any sense. They looked like someone completely destroyed a beautiful building and took out all the colors....The toilet did not make sense, bad User Experience as you cant close them completely and the sink has an opening on top which is not the one you are supposed to use.And health.....I still feel bloated after going to the restaurant yesterday evening. Ive got cramps and all. Which I never had after 5 days eating in restaurants all over Fez and else.To conclude: when you pay 240$ for this service you expect an positively mesmerizing experience. Not to leave a bad bad review on Google.
This is the first 8-course degustation-style meal Ive had, so I dont have much frame of reference, but I really enjoyed the experience. Keep in mind that you get small portions of everything, and the focus is on the sensory experience and mixing tastes. Therefore you probably dont want to arrive starving after a long day of walking around Fez.The restaraunteur was very friendly and came by our table every couple dishes to give us context about the ingredients, the recipe, the chef, etc.Im not going to post photos with this review, because my phone camera wont do the dishes justice!
In North Africa, behind the walls of the living museum that is the Medina of Fes, a hidden gem can be found. Restaurant Nur, a small kitchen is guided by the creative force that is chef Najat Kaanache. The experience starts before you even sit down at the table, a member of the team will lead you through the twists and turns so you don’t get lost in the 9400 alleys situated in this ancient city.Arriving at the restaurant you are shown to your table in an internal court yard of a traditional Moroccan home.Between the two of us, we know all of two words in Arabic, the front of house team however made us felt welcome and accommodated our lack of Arabic throughout the whole dinning experience. The menu is a reflection of Moroccan cuisine and that of the chef experiences, it is a welcome break from the tourist presentation of typical Moroccan cuisine as simply tagines and Moroccan salads. The dishes were thoughtful with balances of flavours and textures the wine pairing were local wines that were refreshing and very much suited to this style. The menu changes frequently depending on what is in the market and what the donkey can deliver on the day, yes I said donkey as car can not access these narrow alleys. My dish of the night was the duck with the beautiful mushrooms which was still slightly crunchy, but the pumpkin was exquisite not too soft, still a bit firm but a nice balanced sweet and slightly tangy taste.I highly recommend this delightful dinner experience.
This restaurant was hyped to be one of the best restaurants in Fes so we booked it for a special occasion as the last of our 4 nights in Fes. We were intrigued and excited tosee what a menu costing £60 per person (no alcoholwould entail in the medina. We had been spending around £20-30 per person for our evening meals. When we entered the restaurant we actually thought we had got the wrong place. The riad had sadly been white washed over and had little atmosphere except for a trickling fountain and some birds in a cage in the corner. It was unfortunately going for a “trying to be western” vibe. With regards to the food, there were approx. 10 courses ranging from a refreshing mint drink to a piece of steak. The menu was experimental to the point of being gimmicky (desert chocolates were served in a postal box). One of the biggest disappointments was the restaurant’s vegetarian option for each course. The restaurant just simply removed the main part of that course eg a prawn, or caviar, and just replaced them with extra salad leaves. This isn’t how you treat someone opting for vegetarian. The wine list also started at 5000 MAD (which is approximately £45). For a local Moroccan wine this felt unnecessarily expensive, especially as a starting price. This restaurant is hugely overpriced for what it offers and you would be better going to your riad to eat dinner.
I really enjoyed my dinner at Nur Restaurant in Fez. It’s situated in a beautifully renovated riad in the Medina. There’s a coherent design philosophy which is applied to pretty much everything. The setting of the restaurant both contemporary and traditional, and both impressive and intimate. I really appreciated how much thought was put into every aspect of the experience. We took the full tasting menu and spend about 3.5 hours in the restaurant. Each course was highly technical, diverse and naturally incredibly tasty. There were a few recurrent themes of which the beetroot infusion (e.g. with gingerstuck with me the most. The courses were playful yet also delicate and naturally very tasteful. The staff was very attentive, kind, and helpful. Our waitress spoke English perfectly, was very knowledgeable, and really seemed vested in giving us a great experience.
Its a place that blend between the ancient and the. Modern, they have good services, and so delicious meals😇
..........Chef Najat brings great flavors to the table of NUR. The 7 courses served wont leave you bored. Your eyes and stomach will be amazed. Excellent staff on her team, who take the time to explain each dish. Fine dining in a relaxing atmosphere. Try both her restaurants for a wonderful dining experience in Fez Morocco........... Excellent place with great food and great prices. Its inside the Fez Medina. Check out Mama Burrito too!😊 Nur is Moroccan food and Mama Burrito is Mexican food. The chef runs both. Food in pictures is from NUR and MamaBurito (Mexican food). Worth the trip guys!!!
The place itself has great atmosphere but the food is only average given the price. Almost every dish has similar taste. The most disappointing part is the time between each course. We spent 3 hours there for only 8 courses and no one came to check on us in between . Service was below average. We also ordered two glasses of rose , each cost 12 euros but the waiter only filled 1/3 of the glasses. I don’t think it’s normal even in the US. Wouldn’t suggest this place at all .
Will not recommend. We’ve been to truly fine dining restaurants in US and Europe. Apart from the dishes were nicely decorated (that’s also the pictures on google), the food was very heavy-flavored that was almost conflicting, and the waiter was constantly trying to sell.To benchmark, the “fine dining” restaurants in Marrakech with way way better food is priced at $50-$70 for 2 persons. This dinner at NUR was $160 with very confused flavors and strong bombs. We call restaurants fine dining not because of the price or decorated dishes, it’s becasue how the chef could manage to respect the true flavor of food and work with it.
Nice atmosphere and the restaurant was packed when we got there. Overall while the experience was generally well executed, we felt the quality was not aligned with the price. Leaving us feeling overcharged and underwhelmed.Although each dish was tasty (but often a bit too salty), the same Chinese sauce was used in 3 dishes in a 8 course meal, and other ingridients were used several times. There is no table cloth or knife rest, yet we are given only one set of cutlery through the meal. It means we had to put our cutlery directly on the table. The biggest problem was communication. The servers, while we applaud their efforts, simply didn’t have enough English to explain what we were eating. (And we recognize perhaps we should learn Arabic. At one point they plopped the plate down and simply said — I don’t know what this is, before laughing and walking away. Ok, fine for a $10 meal, but unacceptable for a $70 meal. The pacing was very uneven and we ended up wondering multiple times if we had been forgotten.Overall, we recognize what Nur is trying to do and think the potential is great, but the current execution leaves much to be desired. And as such can’t recommend it in its current form.
(Be careful, many of the 5-star reviews are for the restaurant that was here *before* Nur.)I really wanted to love Nur after reading the review in the New York Times but … it just isnt ready for prime time as of January 2018.The cost / deliciousness ratio is misaligned (we had many incredible dinners in Fes for 200dh for three but of course did not come to Nur looking for a "deal"), and further derailed by a lack of capable staff (several dishes werent explained at all). Im only being critical because they are aiming for a high bar and charge 10x what dinner would cost in any other nearby restaurant. As such youd expect them to live up to that level of quality.Perhaps the overall experience will improve later this year, so dont completely write Nur off. Its exciting to imagine this kind of tasting restaurant firing on all cylinders but, for now, its difficult to recommend.
One of the best restaurants Ive been. Amazing and unexpected Morrocan food (not Tajin).
Tremendous experience. Artisanal preparation, exquisite execution and superior design. Tremendous exploration of Moroccan taste in an explorative structure. This was truly worth the journey to Fes alone. A very carefully crafted tasting menu that explores the tastes and textures of Morocco. So impressed! The chef is a star and this place will certainly land some Michelin Stars in the near future. Catch it while it is accessible...
Amazing gastronomic journey thanks to Great Chef Najat. One of the best Great Restaurant Ive ever been. Deserves largely a star
The decor, service and food at Nur Restaurant 7 were all sublime and very unexpected - especially in central Fez.The chef/patron is teaching young moroccans to appreicate fresh food and quality and be innovative and deliver great customer service - inspirational
This is a brave new Morocco! I had never tried shark but it was amazing, served with caviar and fermented soy creme fraiche, just over the top. The space is very alive with colorful art, parrots and a marble waterfall. Not just a gem, a diamond!
We had an amazing experience at Nür Restaurant! We were the only people in the restaurant and were treated like kings :If you get tired of cous-cous and tajine, this is the spot! We had a tasty 5 course menu of fusion cuisine from Mexico and Morocco. The restaurant is elegantly decorated in B&W and its an oasis in the middle of the Medina.Price was around 1000Dh for two with beer, over Moroccan standard but worth it every cent!
As of 9/2/16 this place has closed down and is no longer open for business. We went to the Ruined Garden which is nearby and it was excellent. Really friendly staff and a great dinner.
Great food, lovely fresh ingredients, warm friendly service from the chef. Set menu of five courses. Stylish interior. Decent selection of Moroccan wines, some by the glass. Not cheap by Moroccan standards, about 1000 dirhams for two with wine. Well worth it if you want a western style dining experience in Fes.
Rotating guest chefs every few months, a changing menu, and a black and white tiled space-- a nice oasis from the world outside.
Nice place and atmosphere. The food is nouvelle cuisine of morocco which I liked it.Pretty nice project!
