Place Gilleson, 59800 Lille, France, Lille
19th-century structure with a crypt & a sacred art museum including works by Warhol & Baselitz.
I cant say I love the facade, but in all other ways, this is a thoroughly enjoyable cathedral and plaza to visit or stop nearby for a coffee. The interior is well lit (due to the facade giving a diaphanous glow in the daylight), it is uncluttered, decorated and strikes a pleasant mix of classic and modern. The church hosts interesting events (a salsa dancing session was as on one evening recently). Location near old town is also a big plus.
Wow, such a magnificent blend of the old and the new! A credit to those involved in the restoration! Definitely worth a visit.
Really worth a visit! Even though this neogothic church was finished in a horrendish way with modern art and industrial-style building atthe front, which makes it look hideous from the outside, the interior of this late 18th to end 20th church is beautiful. So dont be fooled by the exterior and have a look inside when you can.Inside there is some interesting info on informationboards on the saints and the art dedicated to them in the seperate chapels of the cathedral, also in English (contrary to a lot of French musea). At the front there is also some modern art (not really my taste). This church felt like a little museum and you can really learn something about christian faith and the history of Lille, and it doesnt take too long to go through it all.
Nice tranquil place and worth a visit while in Lille
Well worth a visit. The Modern Facard hides a beautiful cathedral inside. If you time it right the Glass panels of the front will light up with the sun when your inside.
How did I end up here? Weird corrupted, but nice place.
Its a big relatively new cathedral with an interesting facade which is lighten up by sun in the afternoon.
Historic Norte Dame cathedral. Partially renovated. Just close to lille Flanders.
An impressive temple inside with excellent stained glass, large musical instruments.
It is really beautiful and you should visit this place. It closes exactly at 7pm.
Modern church.. quite interesting, lots of rather new sculptures and artworks which didn’t feel as convincing and impressive as those historical cathedrals.
Its a very dangerous city, they broke our car yesterday around 17h (daylight, people around,..and took all our luggage, we were parked at "rue des jardins" a place thats supposed to be nice and secure.. the police cant do anything about it, they say it happens everyday and they target specially the cars from other countries and they cant stop them... Advice: dont go there! No one told us that before, untill we heard it from the policemen, they said never stop here again.. it was a very bad ending to our trip!
One of the most beautiful cathedrals Ive seen. Its majestic and the central chapel is gorgeous 😍
I went in the evening.. did not go inside but outside there are restaurants and bars.. when was there someone is also playing live music.. the place looked lively..
Not convinced on the modernist take on the frontage but inside is peaceful.
A beautiful place to wander around. Its mix of old and modern make this quite a unique cathedral. There is enough to see whilst inside to make this visit worthwhile.Definitely worth the visit.
A delightful cathedral whose architectural and artistic styles stretch from gothic to contemporary. One is able to look inside as a tourist for free. There is a welcoming feel. The interior, like the exterior, demonstrates the mixture of styles that the church has witnessed through the centuries.
The facade might not be very inviting nor beautiful, but visiting the inside is definitively worth it. And at the end the facade gives it a weird but special mix of modern and neo gothic.
The cathedral. Majectic, cold and empty. Outside and at the front of The cathedral: hundreds of people. Beers, socialisation, and love in the air. How to handle this contrast? Life has the answer and may be you as well.
This cathedral is big and different. The style you will encounter is gothic and to be honest it did not excite me too much. After the destruction suffered by the war, the restoration that took place was a failure for me (externallyin the interior, some of the old parts of the temple have remained, but it is still a little .... different, I would say. There are also crypts in the ministry of the temple, but unfortunately when we visited it they were closed.
Really big, modern cathedral. Nice painted windows.
It is a very beautiful cathedral. Maybe the front entrance is not what you expected, but do not let it stop you from visiting the cathedral. The surrounding are also very beautiful, with nice cafés and a few shops.
Ugly exterior, mediocre interior, though the chapels around the choir were beautiful, as was the medieval altarpiece in the south aisle. The medieval statuee of St Mary was surrounded by red lights, which in the Netherlands, where I come from, conjures inappropriate associations.
No words can describe its greatness
Not so attractive from the outside, but the inside is absolutely stunning. The architecture is just wow and splendid. It is quiet and perfect for a little time with yourself for unbelievers and for prayers for believers.Right beside you have a good cafe to eat waffles 🧇 😋 sorry Im a waffles lover😄
So incredibly beautiful! To be honest the exterior had me thinking it wasnt going to be worth it but its gorgeous. Modern and old art in the same place. Lovely!!
I absolutely adored this cathedral. I had never seen a modern cathedral before. It was full of light. The art displayed was modern. If you are in the area, do take the time to visit.
Very impressive cathedral. The lighting through the painted glad its beautiful
An interesting cathedral combining past and present. Definitely a unique façade.
One of the most beautiful places I visited when I came to France is a place of worship and a very spiritual one and also provides a great history of the place. How much it was a trip worth the effort and rain to this church I recommend visiting it
A unique modern exterior featuring a large glass art window (instead of the more usual gothic rose window seen in most cathedrals of northern Franceand a magnificent sculptured copper front door open onto a more traditional interior. Inside there are many beautiful, traditional stained glass windows, a lovely mosaic floor and stunning altar pieces. The statue of Jean dArc is truly beautiful and is featured in this cathedral as opposed to a less ornate, almost obligatory, stone or plaster statue as seen tucked into a corner in almost every church in France.Well worth the short walk from the centre of the old city and highly recommended.
Very peculiar cathedral in the city center of Lille. The front got renovated and is a huge mosaic window which beautifully lights up the church once you are inside.Right in the middle of the cathedral there is also a gigantic kind of art piece hanging, which really gives it a modern touch.Very beautiful and definitely a must-visit if in Lille!
The front side of the church is different from most other churches that Ive seen!
Fascinating mix of old and modern with interesting displays, and excellent Nativity exhibitions at Advent/Christmas .
Such a marvelous cathedral. When I visited, there was a concert that evening. Loved this place.
A great cathedral to visit. Its just a couple of minutes walking from the centre of Lille. The interior is very impressive and a must visit when you are in the city. Especially the old mosaic floor and walls are amazing.
A bit underwhelmed, not sure what they will do w the from facade it is a mismatch (decided kot to take a picture of the new addition on the front)Inside was very nice and some great history
Well worth a visit. To me the cathedral is a little underwhelming when seen from outside the modern front wall. Its well worth going in and taking some time to explore a very beautiful building. The more modern curtain wall is certainly at its best from the inside.
The church has a lovely combination of traditional and modern themes, really quite intriguing. Look out for the stunning modern interpretation of the stations of the cross.
Second catholic cathedral where i felt myself very comfortable! And very beautiful
Impressive cathedral, with amazing stained glasses. It is definitely worth to see
I loved visiting this cathedral! The achitecture is incredible and just so beautiful. Its free to visit and you can just stay and soak it all in then have a drink just outside of it. You can buy a coin memorabilia for just €2. In addition, its just a short distance from the Grand Place. Talk seeing it all!
To me this cathedral looks weird, being made of two different parts. The exterior looks very modern while the interior is a bit more like you would expect from a cathedral, with very few touches. Im not saying theyre not nice, i just think that theyre both more beautiful individually than together. Interesting place nonetheless!
Weird cathedral than seems like a Frankenstein of a few different eras... Im a fan of modern interventions in old buildings, and there are good examples of church renovations that are a lot more interesting and well executed. That main door facade looks completely out of place and not exactly integrated with the original building...
Very strange and impressive kathedral. It is build in several stages. It has a modern front and inside you see different architecture. In the back it is build in a traditional style. Via the side of the building there is an elevator to get in with a wheelchair or whatever ♿️
Beautiful cathedral despite the modern facade on the front of the building I would strongly recommend a visit and recommend walking along Rue de Weppes and joing onto Rue Esquermoise as you will see some quaint houses.
Nice cathedral in Lille . Near to station and grand place . Not crowded , nice place to visit if you are in Lille . Arts and architecture are nice . Parking is available near by and lots of food shops next to the cathedral. Quiet and calm place . Choir is nice .
I like this cathedral better than the one in Paris mainly because it isn’t crowded and you can freely wander around. It has lots of chapels to look at and beautiful music plays in the background. The story of how this cathedral came to be is interesting too. Unlike other reviewers, I actually like the blend of old and new.
Outside the church is modern style but inside is combination with the historical.
