Absolutely one of the best steaks EVER! Service was great, LouAnn (?sp)was cheerful, helpful and always there checking on us! Highly recommended the spaghetti!!!
Never disappoints. Always great food and service.
I’m sad to leave a two star review! The food is AMAZING and always has been. I brought my boyfriend and family in to show him the famous steakhouse in my hometown. Like I said the food was and is still great but the service was some of the worst I’ve ever had anywhere. Our server never even checked on us and only came to the table twice the whole time we were there. Our drinks sat empty and dirty plates were not cleared. The second time I was literally just getting up to go find someone when she came back. I tipped less than 20% which is something I never do. I work in food service and know how challenging it can be but this was just unacceptable.
We had the filets and they were fantastic-great flavor and tender. Great service.
Truly a Mason City icon! Any time I get to pay a visit to Northwestern Steakhouse I’m reminded why it’s one of my favorite eateries in the state. The steak is always cooked to perfection & the Greek spaghetti is a must! You won’t regret the wait to dine here!
Amazing staff and WONDERFUL food. We were from out of state and Northwestern Steakhouse was HIGHLY recommended by two people. When we arrived we were greeted and did not know we should have called ahead for reservations. We were squeezed in and the food lived up to exceed our expectations. If we are in the area we will be back and will tell our friends of our GREAT experience. The staff is also very kind to one another and work well together.
Love this place..ribeye like butter, the bread is amazing,I will definitely return.
Flovor is fantastic. Get this place on your must do list. Check out hours and reservations before you go. Seating is limited.
Ask most people, theyll tell ya best steak house around. They are pricey, but everything is delicious. Keep in mind, everything is saturated with butter, Greek style. I suggest the chicken if steak is not your cup of tea! Oh, and I like the sirloin, medium, my fave!
Love the food here dont get me wrong. Used to come quite a bit. Beat steak ever. We drive 45 minutes for it. But now they have made it so its not possible unless we wanna camp out outside the place early. Cant make reservations like we used to and got there tonight to be told cant get in until 8. Its 5 right now.
The Northwest Steakhouse is the best! If you’re visiting from out of town, this is a MUST visit! Such amazing steaks, chicken, and spaghetti! 🤤 This will forever be one of my favorite restaurants!!! The filet is so tender you can cut it with a fork! We love the nightly specials during the week!
Spaghetti is to die for.Steaks are delicious.Employees are great.
Great food, service. Not quite like the supper clubs I remember.
Absolutely amazing; stacks up against any steakhouse in the country.
Went there on Thursday evening at 4:30 and got a table right away. The petite filet was 10dollars off.Have been going here since 1954. It never changes. Had the filet and spaghetti side. Absolutely wonderful. Cooked to perfection and delicious. Great service too!!
Ok so, Ill start out by saying that the atmosphere is very nice. It was decorated well and and it was very nice. That being said we ordered the specials which were the new York. I had a side of rice my fiance the baked potato. The steak was cooked to the right temp but I guess I wasnt expecting the amount of what I assume is olive oil to accompany it. It wasnt something Im used to and I didnt care for it. Also Im not sure if the rice was supposed to be that texture but it felt overcooked and mushy. Maybe they were trying for risotto and missed the mark alittle Im not sure. It just wasnt my cup of tea. The hostess with the purple hair was amazing, super friendly.
Excellent exceptional steak, very quaint atmosphere, dont miss a great experience!!!
I take my fiance there 1 to 2 times a month for our date nights and they are always amazing to us the food is phenomenal I recommend to everyone the northwestern steakhouse
We were a party of four and all of us ordered the Petite Fillet. It was the tastiest most tender steak I have ever had. It melted in your mouth. If you are in the area dont miss this restaurant. The wait staff was wonderful.
You will be so mad at yourself if you ignore my review! This is a steak lovers heaven! I had the best steak of my life...perfectly seasoned and cooked for the Gods! It made me do that little happy dance EVERYTIME I TOOK A BITE!!!!! The staff is kind and generous ...the chefs are magical...go here...or forever wonder where youll find the best steak ever!
It was my first time at Northwestern Steakhouse and I had the Cobb Salad, Spaghetti and Top Sirloin. What a fantastic experience. The Sirloin was absolutely perfect. Perfectly aged, seasoned and served. What a fantastic crew. Unbelievable experience. I was lucky to experience a walk-in opening, I strongly recommend a reservation, because the place fills up quickly.
Delicious steaks. Side salad was simple-lettuce, tomato slice, half hardboiled egg and small half pickle spear. Pricey $37+/plate. $25/plate would be more reasonable, in my opinion.
Best food ever. We have never left disappointed. Before I found NWS I didnt think I liked steak and would have been fine if I never ate it again. I seriously love this place!!!
I have never once had a bad meal here. The steaks and Greek spaghetti are always absolutely amazing! Perfectly cooked steaks for our whole table. Seriously the best steak Ive ever had anywhere!
This place is worth seeing if for no reason other than the history here. This is the real, original Mason City. It helps that the food is excellent and exceeds the standards of even highest priced steakhouses. The venue is small, make reservations if possible. The menu is small so everything is the house specialty. Seating time is limited, so take advantage of it to read the articles on the wall, look at the pictures, and ask your server for a history lesson. Try the spaghetti, you won’t regret it.
Hands down best steak I have ever consumed. Cooked perfectly, great service, food came quickly. Zero complaints. Best steak in Iowa. I would recommend to everyone. I’m assuming reservations are preferred as it is that good. We did a reservation for 6 the day of but couldn’t get in till 8 but was worth the wait.
Make a reservation or get here early. Small place with limited seating.Ribeye was amazing as well as the Walleye.
Great food but horrible service our waiter was rude one of our party didn’t know the meal they ordered came with a salad and side and our waiter just stared at them rudely not telling them they had an option of a side and salad like they where supposed to know. It was very loud as a table of drunks where next to us al though that’s not the restaurant’s fault was a little annoying to be having a birthday dinner with the family. The waiters kept trying to kick us ASAP while in the midst of opening two birthday presents. We love this place but the service isn’t what it used to be!
When we went it was fine, not amazing, but it was something I always wanted to try. The steaks are cooked in olive oil, so they are going to be more on the soggy side, which wasnt bad, just not how I like my steaks usually. It was a little pricey for what you get in my opinion. The sides were good and the service was good. Something to know going in is that they only have bottle and can service, or at least they did when I went last. Obviously its very popular and most people speak very highly of it, it just wasnt my cup of tea.
The Best filet Ive ever had in my entire life!! And this even beats David Burkes filets! Im from Boston so when we come to Mason City to visit family and this is one of our first stops! We love this place and will definitely be back again!!
A 100 year old classic in Mason City. The menu’s simple, the interior is cozy, and the fillet and side spaghetti are amazing! So juicy and flavorful. There really is no place that cooks their steaks like the NW Steakhouse! In fact, we drove a 3 hour round trip from Rochester, MN just to eat dinner here and it was worth every bite.Tip: show up at 4pm if you want to be seated right at 4:30pm when they open because there’s always a line. Otherwise, call a few minutes before 4:30pm and they’ll let you make a reservation for the next open slot that night which is usually 5:30pm (if you’re the first person to call).
Friends told us it would be pricey, but also the best steak we ever had, they were right. You have to get there when they open at 4:30 or have a reservation. 90 minute max time at the table because of the great demand. Homemade ranch dressing for their side salad is delicious as well. See pix of menu for pricing. With 20% tip our bill was $99.95
Was never a huge fan of steak until my sister took me there for my birthday years ago and Ive been going ever since. Anyone who sees this is just a simple Bar is missing the point. They are focused on making the best steaks around and people come from everywhere just to wait in line to get some. The best Greek steak and spaghetti Ive ever had.
My wife and I were referred to this restaurant as we were travelling. We had a disappointing experience. The noise level was unbearable. We had to shout across our table to communicate. The food (we both ordered ribeyewas cold, over cooked and swimming in oil, water and butter. The salad was served in a plastic bowl. A poor presentation of the food. Overall not impressed.
THE BEST STEAKHOUSE/RESTAURANT/EATERY/DINER/WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT! People come from all over the state to eat here and are never disappointed. The food is consistently amazing. Venue is small and cozy so have a reservation or get there early.
Arrived 10 minutes before they opened and we were the 4th in line. Fast service & delicious food. Soft bread & butter was served immediately. The salad came with an egg slice, slice of tomato & a dill pickle. I ordered a rare filet which was delicious, almost melted in my mouth. Husband ordered a medium rare ribeye which was also fantastic. Michelle our waitress was awesome, very friendly.
Absolutely a great experience and even better steak. I would say its a little like waiting in line for a very popular ride at an amusement park which in the end was well worth the wait. Staff was very friendly, beef was sourced either within the state or when possible locally. Top grade beef as well. The atmosphere was very cozy and inviting. Was a first timer that was brought by people who new the place well. While there is no reserve seating, there is a considerable wait time. Its recommended that you put your parties name in and the host/hostess will give you an approximate time for when youll be seated. Ie. Show up to the restaurant at 6:00 they might assign you a table for 7:00. So plan appropriately and make Northwestern the last but most delicious end to an evening. As was stated, the wait is well worth it! Would definitely like to go again and definitely recommend!
It def lives up to all of the great reviews.Tender meat, no matter what cut you get.The Rice has mint added, which sounds odd but is delicious! We got there right before 4:30 waited outside in a short line, but managed to get right in when they opened.
Prime rib was absolutely amazing. Walleye was done perfectly, baked potatoes were very good. Dinner salad tasted fine but basically iceberg lettuce with a tomato slice and pickle spear. Service and reservations were excellent! Highly recommend.
More of a bar that happens to have food than a steakhouse and "fine dining". Minimal options on sides which include spegetti, potato, french fries and rice. Starch starch and more starch. There are 12 dinner choices, 8 steak 1 chicken, 1 salad, 1 fish and 1 shrimp. Your meal includes one side and a small salad. There are about 80 alcohol choices, soda coffee and instant tea.Steak was ok, I dont mind the prices but there are expectations of better food and options.Lower your expectations and it is an alright high priced place.Oh, you get your own personal spray bottle to sanitize your hands right on your table.
Wow! Amazing Steak and an even better value. Excellent service by Lou Ann. She knew the menu well and her advice was spot on. Due to the CovAids fiasco, outside seating is available. Ill be back for sure. Thank you Northwestern Steakhouse!!!
Ordered the Ribeye and Top Sirloin with spaghetti. One of THE best steaks I have ever had. The spaghetti was spectacular, the service was amazing. Great history behind this place. Will be going back.
Very good steak. Ive never had a steak that was sitting in a type of sauce, but it was delicious, kind of reminded me of au jus for prime rib. Excellent bread that comes with the dinners. You also get a salad, choice of potato. They also serve alcohol so you can have a relaxing drink with your meal. We found this place on Google maps and glad we went 25 minutes out of our way to try it.You may want to call for reservations first as it seems to always be busy as we got the last table and it was during a Tuesday night.
A hour after ordering, two friends recieved steaks that were quite good, but one was rather dry and without flavor. Service was generally lacking. Atmosphere was loud, warm, and crowded.
Great food, great service... prices are a little overwhelming. That would be my only small issue.
Venue is small in size and seating can get tight in places. Customer service is top notch. Waitng lounge upstairs is spacious (see pics).Excellent quality meal with good portions for the pricing. Had a fillet cooked to medium rare and it was done to perfection. The meat was very tender as well. Baked potato was as soft as mashed potatoes it was prepared so well. Pre-meal salad and bread were decent also.Getting in is a process so be prepared but restaurant is definitely worth the stop.
Highly over cooked steak, however the butter and olive oil saved it! The steak in the picture was ordered medium rare, which apparently means rarely any pink. Flavor was still enjoyable but lost so much being over cooked. Side spaghetti ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ very good!
The absolute best steak I have ever had. Their filet mignon melts in your mouth. And the combination of Greek seasoned steak jus and clarified butter bathing the filet are so delicious. This iconic North Iowa restaurant never disappoints. If you get within 100 miles of Mason City, do yourself a favor and make the trip. You will be glad you did!
