New York Deli - Restaurant in Christchurch, New Zealand
Wow, I wondered why this shop was always empty when I walked past. I got ripped off just to find out that its just plain terrible.Got a large sandwich for around $16, and it was ripoff. The ingredients were poor quality, the bread lackluster, service not fantastic, seating arrangements not thought through well.Id recommend that you dont go here, even subway has better food.
Great food and friendly service. The hero size sandwich is great for sharing between two people with a bowl of fries. We love the pulled pork grilled cheese. Flavourful and juicy spiced pulled pork and melted cheese in a ciabatta roll. The fries are always on point with really nice seasoning. Only reason it loses a star is because its not always the cleanest, but considering its in the middle of town and we often see them packed for the lunch time rush its understandable it can be hard to keep up with clearing tables.
Horrible horrible service. 85% of staff were talking and on there phones. They messed up my order 3 times. And refused to answer my question about how many carbs and sugar is in the bread (Im type 1 daibetec)
Visited first time. I had a newyork slider for 10.20$ about 4 to 6 inches of bread. Filling was just some sauce and cabbage with 3 pieces of meat. And then had jalapeño bites. With cheese. 5 pieces for 7.95$ plus 5$ coke 330ml.Total bill 23.05$I’d say high overpriced for a place / offering. There r better places in town.1/5 for taste and value
Sort out your opening times. Website wrong, door wrong waste of a trip. Told staff and he said that’s the old times. Maybe update them.
Always come here for a pulled pork grilled cheese. One of our favourite lunch places to treat yourself to in town
Disappointing basket of chips now half the amount, bowl not even full, but same price $4.90 wont be returning.
Popped in for a bagel and had the pulled pork and wow it was delicious! Great balance of spices without being too spicy. Great place, would definitely come back. Would recommend grabbing extra napkins as the pork was full of oily flavour!
Vary good
Such a great place for a brunch! Lovely place and delicious food and coffees!
Coffee was great But oh my the deli sandwich was flat dry and filling resembled food scraps No sandwich artist there
Good food, good service, reasonably priced
Love going to this place. We visit it every time we come to Christchurch, highly recommend
Had to wait what seemed ages for my order and in the end forgot the side order...
Good food but prefer the other New York deli in chch as they make it in front of you, and can do the selection step by step process. 2/4 times now have had order not quite how It was wanted..
Disappointed. Came here as it was recommended by a friend - she was also disappointed. Ordered the Bronx Beef - Lacking filling so lacking in flavour. 2 small pickle slices, literally only 3 capers, a small smear of horseradish and about a teaspoon of cheese (I even took a pic as it was ridiculous). Meat was nice tho. Chips were delicious. Service was lacking - couldn’t get a rapport with the person behind the counter despite trying. Maybe she was having a bad day. It showed.Edit - I’ve just gone through the photos of Hero’s on other reviews and I’m now feeling super ripped off! They all look so good - what the heck happened today?!?
Yeah certainly could be better hygiene. Same gloves used to prepare everything handling fish and other meats and buns. We watched for 20minutes no glove changes or utensils used instead of hands. Food preparers long hair flicking around everywhere. Also ran out of hot dog buns. Dirty water glasses. Hopefully it improves could be good.
A New York style diner that had run out of hotdog buns!! I couldnt have a hotdog. Prices on the menu in the window different to those displayed and charged inside. Ok but not great.
Slow waste of time. I was here at 1pm. Avg busy. Took over 25 minutes to make a hero.Backwards ordering system. Paid $15 for a sandwich i couldnt pick the toppings on.Dont waste your time.
A few keto options other than the crackling would be nice. Food was delicious Coffee excellent
Yep pretty decent smoothie, had the tropical smoothie. I would have given it 5 stars but they had a plastic straw. The little Italy slider was bloddy good, hit the mark on that one. Great service only waiting 5mins.
Nice spot fast service but thats because the food is not that great had the cheese steak hero wasnt toasted and cheese was unmelted for the price it was below average friend had vege bagel again wasnt toasted and not much filling not to be racist in any way but if Asian people want to open a franchise that is American food based they should really research what the food is was very disappointing, and if someone wants there left over food in a takeaway bag dont throw a bag at them do it for them its hospitality
Different to the other two located in Christchurch, cant order and pay at the end. Good bagel
An hour and a half before closing they turned their ovens off, which limited the menu. The priority of the staff was to close early, not to provide customers with food.
On a cold, winters day theres nothing better than a Harlem Flank!Great choice of breads (gluten free includedand vegetarian options too.
Great food. Good service
I ordered a salmon hero pity only half the hero had salmon in it ....poor be going to subway from now on !!!!
The menu is a little overwhelming, the sandwich I got was overly sweet. Sausage lacked flavour.
Delicious although new tastes for me
Great amd tasty bagels !
Make pretty good sandwiches, as well as crispy hot chips. Eat in or takeaway
Very busy lunch time cafe! Good bagels.
The food at New York Deli is absolutely delicious. I had the pork sandwich (New Yorker Porkerand it was amazing. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked, and had little bits of crackling throughout. Service was helpful and quick, even during lunch rush. We also tried the BBQ hot dog, the kids ham lettuce and tomato, and the cheese steak. All were loved.
Good location, indoor and outdoor seating, looking out at the courtyard of bnz centre. Sandwiches are average. Good service, easy ordering for take away.
yea unlike all other New York Delis they dont make the sandwich subway style where you rock up and have them make it in front of you.. instead you place your order sit down wait and wait and then get your sandwich... my only guess as to why you have changed this from all other stores is so they can do what you did to me cheap out on the salad toppings and not give people the option of picking and choosing what they want.... not going to be going back to this one... would recommend the Lincoln Rd or Riccarton rd stores as you get a much better deal.... also asked for added jalapenos which is didnt get.... i guess another bonus of them of not making the product in front of the customer
Food taste good but value for money not good.
Damn tasty sandwiches and nice coffee
Unlike every other New York Deli they don’t ask you what you want in your sandwiches, you just order and they make it, didn’t want half of the stuff they put in it and they never asked me.They even forgot to add extras until I asked, very bad service!! Will never go back to this New York Deli and I would tell others to do the same
Very nice.More than a little pricey at a slider, fries and in-house drink over $16, however it was tasty and beats other sandwich, slider or sub providers.I will return a few times but again wouldnt be too often due to $ point. Dont get me wont I am the same with other providers.
One of the worst meals Ive had in New Zealand. $16 for a salmon and cream cheese bagel and a flat white. I only chose it because I was craving a bagel and read the positive reviews. I feel like I was in a weird episode of the Twilight Zone where the New York Deli I went to isnt the same one everyone else is talking about. Where to begin?1. All the seating is uncomfortable, and the restaurant is so noisy its quieter in the courtyard.2. The employee behind the counter rushed me to order when there was no one else in line.3. My plate was tossed down in front of me loudly enough that the other customers turned to look, and the top of my bagel slid off. I would have been offended, but the guy next to me had his dropped down in the same way.4. I hesitate to call it a bagel. It was a doughnut shaped slice of bread. Texture and taste of basic sandwich bread, no crust, given only the most cursory heating rather than a proper toasting. McDonalds offers a more authentic New York bagel experience.5. Literally three little pats of cream cheese given only the vaguest suggestion of being spread.6. I specifically asked for it without capers. Picking them off isnt good enough, the juice had soaked into the salmon.7. My coffee was five minutes behind my bagel, and the bagel wasnt exactly quick.8. They were out of water glasses.9. I needed the water because the espresso was sour as heck.On the plus side, the salmon was tasty and in the three bites I could actually taste the cream cheese, it was too. Everything else about the experience sucked. Maybe the sandwiches are better, but I wont be returning to find out.
delicious sandwiches and chips! have been here a couple of times when in Christchurch and the food is always good.
Im surprised that they do good coffee! Quick service during lunch time with fresh taste food, good place to grab a meal when walking through the city centre!
3 star because the ordering system here sucks, should be like Lincoln road new York deli where you know exactly how long youre going to wait. Good sandwiches, its up to the franchise quality but the ordering system just makes it less than ideal.
Very tasty food. Staff pleasant.
Didn’t feel as if the service was there. $14 is a reasonably high price to pay for a sandwich so would expect a quality serving. Would put on par with a subway run by a circus monkey.
I know food is expensive in NZ, but 2 measly slices of pastrami on a big sarnie gives NYC delis a bad name.
Great food and good coffee
New York Pork hero. Only one of many tasty treats at this funky joint.
Fancier than Subway but about the same sort of price.
Different to the other New York Delis, but I like it! More of a restaurant vibe than a subway vibe. Service is crazy during lunch time, the place is full but still get food under 10 minutes. Definitely a staple lunch place for me!!
