Negwegon State Park - State park in Alpena, United States
Beautiful beach. Never too crowded. Bring your own chairs/blankets, no picnic tables.
The place is beautiful. Not much to do. The only thing we didnt like was it was a pain to get to there the road was horrible.
Amso e park and nice beach kind of out of the way and secluded
This is a rustic State Park! Very pretty, not a lot of people! The trails are easy! 7 miles of unspoiled beaches!!
Such a beautiful place to relax and have fun!
The beach is beautiful, sandy, and huge! This is a bit hard to find, but its worth it.
Totally awesome as usual and we had the entire beach to ourselves except for zillions of hard biting flys that were relentless. Your only escape is in the lake which is still a bit chilly.
This place is tucked way back in, you have to take seasonal roads to get to it. There are some wonderful hiking trails and 4 tent campsites that can be reserved. Two of them were right on the water, I believe the other two are as well but we couldnt take the trail due to nesting eagles. Its also a dark sky preserve, so its probably gorgeous at night.
For our first backpacking trip, hike was perfect. The hike in/out was quiet and beautiful. Of course there were bugs, but with the proper repellent, we sustained minimal mosquito bites. The hike took just under an hour, with some occasional stops to soak in the beauty. Our site was South Point #4, which was very secluded. The site receives a lot of wind, as you may see in other reviews, however it helped greatly with bugs/mosquitos. The wind prevented most insects from being able to fly, so we had virtually no issue with bugs/mosquitos at the actual site. If we adventured from the site, that was a different story. Repellent is highly recommended. Some additional positive points. The fire pit has a rock wall built to help block wind and help start a fire. A bear box is included about 100 ft from the actual site, along with a vaulted toilet. I know you cant ask for much, but the toilet was def a single star. lolOverall, this trip was Perfect... Perfect... Perfect.
A lot of horse flys this time of year. Beautiful park with a big beach.
Out in middle of nowhere.A great place to get away to clear out your stress.
Drove an hour to walk the dog.....first sign in big letters?....no dogs allowed.....
If youre willing to take the trail to get back there, you will not be disappointed. Minimal human intervention in the park. A lot of hiking possibilities and the beach is quite nice. All campsites have to be hiked to. Very quiet and peaceful Back there.
What a cool hidden place. So glad we checked it out. Better have a vehicle with some ground clearance to get there and thats in good weather. If its wet or snowy, you better hace 4 wheel drive. But getting there was part of the experience. Signs posted, no dogs on the beach. Wish i would have known that ahead of time. But its one of the most pristine beaches ive seen. Stars are incredible at night.
This place is a true Michigan gem. Its lovingly cared for, wild, and scenic. Great swimming in many areas. The back country campsites are spectacular. They are primitive and remote.... Expect to carry in or filter water from the lake, use a vault privie with no roof, and either hang your food from a bear pole or use a bear box (both are provided. Be prepared to cut (down and deadfirewood if youre camping.... Bring a saw. I had to hike a bit from my campsite to find anything to cut. So youll probably need to cut and carry firewood from some distance. The trail in is easy .... Flat, well used and marked, with bridges over mucky areas, and a few benches. The public beach is lovely, theres good rock hunting up toward the point if youre into hiking to other parts of the shoreline. Great trail system. The drive in on the two track sand trail road is ok most of the time but I would imagine you need 4 wheel drive occasionally. Its all sand.
Such a nice sandy beach. Great walking paths and best spot for a quite walk down the beach
As always with these beaches just gorgeous and the walk on the beach was awesome
Road is narrow and rough. Caution met cars on road and have to pull over. Lots of private property keep out signs on way in. We came in from the south. Glad we did There is a parking lot and lots of signs no pets. Walk a shortbit and beach looks empty but behind the dunes is a beach Full of people and there dogs unleashed. Photo worthy beach is clean. Leaving as two minivans came in with there kids about 8 and 10 sitting on the top van roof as they drove in. Everyone ideas ready to have fun.
Great trails.
The roads to get hear are pretty rugged: one lane dirt with few turnouts north of the entrance, but several turnouts to the south. Good to have a 4WD with good clearance. Park has nice beach and restrooms. The hiking trails are very nice, with nice views at the south point of Thunder Bay. Highly Recommended.
Absolutely must to visit place for clean quiet beach lovers! About 3 miles walking beach. The road is very narrow and sandy. No pets.
Absolutely gorgeous and great hiking trails! 10/10 recommended. Might need a 4wheel drive to get back there very sandy and soft in some parts of the road.
Amazing camping if youre up for the hike. Amenities are very well kept. The views cant be beat!
The backcountry campsites are beautiful. We stayed at campsite #4 and it was amazing falling asleep to the sounds of Lake Huron. Our site had a picnic table, fire ring, bear pole, and toilet. The trails are pretty well maintained and we only saw a few other people.
Amazing as usual! We love this park!
Really remote but worth the drive. Totally unspoiled Lake Huron beachscape
Very nice, clean relaxing and quiet beach. Scenic all around. Hiking, swimming and exploring more of Michigans splendor. Outhouse, no grills and no picnic tables. This park is well off the main road. Driving to the main entrance can be tricky. Room for one car only, but there are places to pull off and allow traffic by.Great for star gazing. Caught a meteor shower, Mars and Mars reflecting off the lake...What a sight to see.
Negwegon State Park is a wilderness exploration waiting to happen! Several miles of trails go deep into wooded area full of pine trees and Birch trees. There is a lot of beachfront to explore too, and dispersed campsites for people who really want to get away for a weekend in the deep woods. It is a several miles long rough dirt road to get to the gravel road where the Park entrance is, it is really just a two-track trail that will be a lot harder to drive on in bad weather or in wet seasons. There is a small parking lot and a few vault toilets and it is a Dark Sky Preserve which has a great view of Lake Huron. This Park is for people who like wilderness camping, exploring wooded trails, and enjoy a long beach walk.
This is a great place for beginners who are interested in hiking out to camp. The trails are well maintained and the campsites are beautiful. Our site had a fire pit with a cast iron grill attached, a picnic table, a "treasure box" toilet, and a bear box to store food. It had beautiful white pines for shade, and it was right next to a nice sandy beach. I was always under the impression that most of lake Hurons shores were rocky, but this beach has beatiful sand. We saw several bald eagles, and I highly recommend this site if you are looking for some peace and quiet.
Best beach around! Great hiking trails too.
So much beach, so few people. The parking lot was full of vehicles when we got there. However the beach is so big, everyone could spread out and not feel crowded.Only four stars, because not everyone could remember to use the available outhouses to go the bathroom making for some smelly bushes.
Most excellent camping- only 4 spots so reserve early- what a beautiful place
Beautiful remote park. Drive in was fun, basically a one lane road through the forest. If you come across cars someone has to find a spot to pull off but there are lots of them. We hiked the Potawatomi Trail. Nice and flat and only saw 2 people on a Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend!
Very nice place for backcountry camping. We stayed at south point #4 and is by far the most private. This site is right on thunder bay and overlooks a couple of islands. At night you can see the lights of Alpena in the distance. The beach is rocky, but there is a relatively sandy area to swim in. Id bring water shoes. The campsite itself is a cleared sandy area nestled in trees. The picnic table, fire pit with grate and pit toilet made this a comfortable site. The walk back to the site was an easy 2.2 miles with our packs. Bringing a wagon could be an option to this site, but would be easier to sites #1-3. The path gets rockier out by site #4, but is pretty smooth to sites #1-3. Site #4 faces north, so things got kinda choppy and we werent protected from the winds blowing from the north. The other sites have a more traditional beach feel and are less windy, as wind rarely comes from the east. However these are more closely spaced together. You really cant go wrong with any site. While there, hike the Chippewa trail. There is the most beautiful birch forest on that route that cant be missed. All trails are relatively flat. There are areas of muck so wear sturdy shoes and bring mosquito repellent.
Beautiful beach that is untouched. There are a few trails that you can walk on as well.
This park is really cool, as far as being remote, having a great beach, and options for hike in camping. The trails are beautiful. The problem: deer flies. Seriously, you cant enjoy the place when youre swarmed with flies.
Loved the beach and water. Didnt get to walk on the trails, but hope to next time. Plenty of parking. A nice long drive to get to the park. Vault toilets are available on site, but no garbage cans. If you bring a lunch, then bring a bag to carry away your garbage! Very peaceful with only a few people around.
10 out of 10! Secluded, good trails and a wonderful beech.
Waterproof boots and larger vehicles only. This is a fairly flat walk but there is a lot of swampland with standing/flowing water on the trail, particularly on the western part of the loop, and with that comes mosquitoes. Definitely could use some attention from the trail crew in spots, although DNR may want to keep this one more undeveloped.
Absolutely love this place. I camped at South Point alone for two nights in late June and it was incredible. Great view of Thunder bay and Lake Huron. Awesome woods. And the campsites are spread out so far you really are secluded. I saw one person the whole three days! There were only two downsides: the bugs (but bug spray worked fine for me), and the literally thousands of seagulls out on an island in the bay never stopped making noise so loud I could hardly sleep at night. I found out when I got home it is called Bird Island. Haha I think I just went the wrong time of year for that. Either way, Ill no doubt be back!
Negwegon is awesome, secluded, peaceful. Thoroughly enjoyable beach day!
Love the beach! Sandy and quiet! Hidden back in the state park quite a bit. Great for our dogs to run and play in the sandy water because theres plenty of room between people.
My wife and i camped at blue bell campsite. This is one of Michigans hidden gems that must be seen!
Beautiful park way back in the woods. Spent the day swimming, fishing and picture taking. RUSTIC. There are 4 pack-in pack-out camp sites. The beach is amazing. Vault toilets. There is a running fresh water spout.
Awesome secluded views of Lake Huron. Its quite a beautiful drive to get back there as well.
Absolutely beautiful beach!! Not a lot of people. Nice and quite
Amazing place to camp, but I definitely agree with Jeff, bring your bug spray if you plan on hiking. My cousin and I stayed at campsite #4 (South Point), the view was incredible! It cant get much more "remote" than this, if youre looking for a place where theres no one around then this is it.
Amazing place to camp and relax with nature
Good place for day hikes and for an overnight. We setup camp early and then carried day packs around. Relatively flat park/hike. Great views of the lake and all sites are beachfront. Do not skip the North Point. Also cool to hike on the old railroad tracks to the south. Will be visiting again.
Another great place to get away from everything. Rustic sites a mile apart from each other. Great trail that loops around. Hard to find, unless you end up on Google Maps. And a gorgeous beach that you can have all to yourself most of the time. Pure Michigan at its finest.
