Necropolis from 9th century onwards with thousands of tombs, many underground with painted frescos.
Necropolis Banditaccia in Cerveteri
Description
Privilege
You dont feel Necropolis in here. It is a big park with a lot of trees. Not creepy at all.We came with kids. They had plenty of space to run.You can pay only in cash.It is open on Tuesdays ( Google says otherwise)
MoreIncredible site that you must go visit! Just make sure to bring cash because, sad to say it, they dont take anything else! One of the most beautiful and biggest necropolis in the world and they have to survive with pennies! Shame!
MoreFascinating, thought-provoking and peaceful place. Very enjoyable visit.A 10 euro ticket admits you to the museum as well as the necropolis, which is a great deal. Be advised that they only take cash.
MoreVery atmospheric! Perfect for wandering around. Cash only for admission.
Wonderful piece of history uncovered. Huge efforts have been put in the exploration of this area but unfortunately it is going downwards quite rapidly. While the tombs survived thousands of years quite good, the buildings, infrastructure, signs and so on built in 2007 / 2013 with EU funds are falling apart in many places. Give it 10 more years and everything is ready to be rebuilt. Crazy...A shame that the multimedia projections are not working any more.Good to know: some of the places outside of the fence that are preserved by voluntary helpers are in a better condition than the official parts.
MoreVery good place. Open in Sundays
First, be prepared. Second, limit your expectations. Opens only on weekends, despite what the official site says. Can only pay in cash, no card accepted. There is no water fountain anywhere in the huge site, no vending machine anywhere, and the bar is closed "due to COVID" (? currently, all bars in Italy are open). No personnel around, except from the grumpy ticket lady. No guided tour available, no map given: we were told to "just take a picture of this (tiny outdated, black and whitemap here" at the entrance.Outdated info panels around the necropolis, some of which were missing positional info and some showing an old path no longer viable. The famous 3D Multimedia tours curated by Italian documentarist Piero Angela have long vanished: all projectors in all tombs were missing, or out-of-order and literally thrown in a corner.Again, "due to COVID", the didactic, Multimedia and sculpture rooms were closed. I visited many other archaeology sites and museums this week and this is the only one where such a massive closure was enforced. This was clearly for lazyness and lack of personnel. The site is beautiful, but largely left to itself. Be prepared with Wikipedia or your own private guided tour.I am extremely disappointed from the management of this astounding UNESCO site. Sadly, it is exceedingly clear how the public fundings are somehow diverted "mafia style". Poor Italy.
MoreNice walk for 30 min, could not get inside the paid section as it currently only works on weekends (COVID times)
MoreAbsolutely amazing Etruscan tombs! There are different types of tombs from different periods of Etruscan history. The written explanations arent very detailed, so its worth getting a guide to really understand what youre seeing. You can get there from Rome by taking the train to Ladispoli-Cerveteri, then theres a bus to the necropolis.
MoreBeautiful place will come back soon
Very nice place to visit
One of the best preserved Etruscan necropolises. The whole necropolis has been constructed in a volcanic tuff deposit. Consists of burial mounds built by digging into the ground, leaving the mounds intact. Each of these mounds consists of an inner space where carcases and grave goods were deposited. Some are very complex while some are simple. It depends on the social status of the deceased.
MoreAn ancient Etruscan city of the dead. It is located in a picturesque location but access is on foot from Cerveteri if you have no car. It can be seen on a combined ticket with the local museum. There are public toilets of the squat type but no water is available on site, an issue in warm to hot weather. I was declined water at the ticket office and was assured that the staff had no water either (!). Of course, I dont believe a word of this. The grounds are beautified by stone pines, cypresses, arbutus etc. Access from Rome by public transport is via CORTAL bus to Cerveteri, or train to Ladispoli station plus local bus or taxi (if availableto Cerveteri. Overall, the museum and necropolis are worth visiting as a pair. Cerveteri has numerous worthwhile places in which to eat.
MoreGreat site using sound and light to explain the burials and shows paintings on the walls using virtual reality. The tumuli are huge and give an Indiana Jones atmosphere
MoreVery nice. But difficult to find and get to. Possibly best to hire a car in either Rome or Fiumicino. Large area so you might need to spend 2-4 Hours there. Also necessary to read up on the site before a visit
MoreAs an American, Ive never heard of this place. It was an incredible experience. On the August day we went, we only saw four or five couples walking around the acres of tombs.
MoreWe were there 5years ago (pre-smartphone!and were overwhelmed with the beauty, history and culture we could soak up. Serene, shady roads, exquisite art inside the tombs. There WAS a small food service inside the necropolis back then. Make the effort to get there... you will be amazed.
MoreAmazing Necropoli with many old Etruscan influences. Really good price. This is something you have to see when you visit Cerveteri. A little bus is going from the town to the Necropoli for free. After that, visit the museum too.
MoreFascinating place with thousands of tombs. Beautiful.
The legacy of peoples 2600 years ago, documenting their honouring of the dead.
Very interesting, English explaination. Too bad that some of the multimedia did t function.
MoreMagical!
Great place for people interested in ancient culture. Quite and calm with very few people. No restaurant.
MoreGood to visit
Such a pitty! The reason that I dont give this beautiful archaeological park 5 stars that it deserves but only 2, is for this:We enter through the ticket office. You will only receive an audio tour after issuing an identification. With this you can hear a sound fragment in various tombs. We are entering the terrain. It is really a beautiful necropolis! We enter the first tomb with audio. What is being told is very interesting and gives you a lot of background information. This is how we enter 3 tombs. At no. 4 is audio and video . Unfortunately, it doesnt work. But there are 6 other tombs with video where it might work. But unfortunately, nothing works at all. Im going back to the ticketoffice to chance my locker for 1 that does work. Then the lady at the desk, who is only very busy with her whatsapp, tells me that all videos do not work. They are broken. But, we can watch a movie in the restaurant. I go back again and we continue our way through the park. When we arrive at the restaurant everything turns out to be tight. On the paper at one of the door we found out that the film is only shown 4 times a day and we were just too late. The next is only after waiting 1 1/2 hours, and we had now seen everything. Why didnt this lady point me to the limited "show" times? Why was it not told beforehand that nothing worked and that only in 3 tombes audio is available? Then I read on the map we got by entering the parc, that you could also visit the tombs with video and audiowith a guide, for free. When I asked the (boredwoman behind the counter for this option, I was told again that this was not possible. Nothing just works. As an excuse, she indicated that they had just changed owners and that they have no staff. They were only 2 people. Yes? And? She has let us buy an entrance ticket without further mentioning that almost nothing works in the audio and video field. It has also not been pointed out that a movie is being played in the restaurant, but that it is only shown 4 times a day. This type of important archaeological site must be managed by the state and not by private individuals. See the decline here! Such a shame !!! Because the place is magnificent and very special.
MoreAmazing place! I visited it at the end of January - and there were barely a soul there, it added some additional atmosphere to this necropolis. Some tombs has multimedia installed inside which uncovers some facts about Etruscan civilization, their habits and of course funeral traditions. This place was a very good surprise for me and I recommend it for a visit.
MoreImppresive etruscan necropoli. Must visit if you want to imagine what was the place before Rome was build.
MoreVery cool place to visit and see how the Etruscan people buried their deads. Theres a lot to see and explore, you will certainly feel a little bit like Indiana Jones! When we visited, there wasnt a lot of people, and as the necropolis is huge, you feel really like its all yours. The parking is not a problem, free and big.The only downside was the audioguide. They have a system that you have to enter certain tombs and some explanations will start, with lights and some video in some places to better describe the important stuff. Well, this system only worked in 2-3 tombs. And it wasnt only ours, as other tourists experienced the same issue independently of the language.
MoreWhat an amazing place to visit. The area is covered by graves carved into the rocks that have been shaped into round tombs. The main area is focused around the reception area and car park at the end of a long track. Alongside the track are other examples of the tombs. The only downside was the unhelpful staff. The underground tombs can be illuminated by a sound and light show but only if you are provided with the correct remote control. They don’t give it out a lunch time, but don’t say. Don’t arrive at lunchtime.
MoreEtruscian tombs, fascinating place! Big parking lot, directly at the entrance. friendly staff.
MoreAn amazing place to visit and Im surprised it isnt better known globally. The Etruscan tombs date from about 600BC but are very well preserved due to the local climate. The Etruscans inhabited the area before Rome and the Romans took over. They were an advanced culture with great artistic abilities. I have to admit I do not know much about them but visiting the Necropoli has prompted me to discover more. There is an entrance fee but it is very reasonable. The site is large and youll need at least two hours to go round. If you visit the museum as well you will probably need four hours. There is a film show which is usually in Italian but if it is quiet when you visit other languages are available. A guide will also show you around some of the tombs and this will include an animated slide show in the tombs to demonstrate Etruscan culture. There is a cafe on site for refreshment if it is hot. There is a large free car park and a small gift shop in the ticket office. All this and it is only 3km from my in-laws. I will be visiting again.
MoreVery interesting and educational. We spend a good couple of hours looking at the necropolis
MoreThere is no way I could begin to explain how well this site is explained to the visitors via map, signs and the "audioguide" that I want to recomend to anyone who likes to explore in their own pace. The key toombs have an automatic light and sound tour that you can activate at your leasure.I found that the heritage of the Etruscans was treated with respect and dignity by the designers of this exposition. Nowhere did I get the sensation of exploatation noore "graveradtourism".A word of warning:The site is HUGE (bring good shoesand the experience can be stressfull on hot days (bring shade and water). If you bring kids remember that the tombs, though empty and mostly well lit, can be scary to enter and bring fourth a lot of thoughts and emotions that might return later in the days (and nightsto come. There is allso no way to see everything in a day. Go for the main tombs and see more if there is time.Allso see the video presentation. The museum is not close by ans is for another day in my opinion.Alltogether it was a very profound and educating experience for the whole family.I would recomend this to anyone. The only sad thing is that the tombs being like they are, they do not seem accessible for example a person in a wheelchair.
MoreMust view for all students of archaeology and tourists alike, the ancient tombs gives a deep view of the beliefs of the mystical practices
MoreMust visit. An real insight into life, or should I say death, 2500 years ago
If you love history youll love this place.
Amazing place so much history pleased to have made the stop
You need some time and a good guide. There is a lot to learn about the Etruscans.
MoreAmazing! Totally unexpected, awesome place!
Incredibly interesting place. It is hard to believe that the Etruscan empire was so highly developed and went through so much trouble by building large cities with streets and apartments just for their dead-people. I definitely recommend everyone to come here!
More1 of most amazing places Ive been to and only cost €16 for family of 4. Free shuttle bus to and from cerveteri castle museum and nice little town. A full day required here. Use cotral bus to get here.
MoreIt was so cool to walk through this ancient burial grounds and see just how massive it was. While you are in it the whole place feels like being on a movie set or being transported to the past. Dont pass up the chance to do the audio visual to they give you! Its much more interesting than you would expect.
MoreI cannot explain without expletives how absolutely awesome this place is. If you are a history nerd and ruins nerd this is the place for you. I came in February and was virtually alone and the weather was perfect. Try to get the movie showing in English in tombs 7 and 9 from the very nice man who shows you the movie in the main building, as they are truly wonderful. The Etruscan people still are very much a mystery to us but it is evident they cared for their people and ancestors. See the beautiful underground tomb with the chisled pillows. Bellissimo!
MoreMy trip to Italy changed my view on the ancient civilizations. This necropolis is beautiful and mind blowing
MoreBeautiful place easly accesible from Rome. You can reach it from the Cornelia metro staton taking a Cotral bus. First buy the tickets in a nearly newsstand. The journey takes about 45 minutes. You get off at the last station and walk for about 15 minutes following the marks. Soon you reach the area and you are able to admire tombs, which are not fenced before entering strictly protected site. To enter you pay 5 EUR and this is definitely woth it.
MoreBeautiful site and extremly nice staff.
Astonishing experience! We heard at least one couple whistling the Indiana Jones theme song... apart from all the good historical and cultural reasons to visit this site, you should just do it to feel like an adventurer discovering an overgrown city of the dead constructed a few hundred years BC!
MoreVeeery nice place to visit. I rent a scooter to go there from Rome and it was an amazing g day. If you have one extra day in Rome and have done the main attractions there, I totally recommend you go to the necropoli.
MoreSimply an amazing place! Our 5-year-old was so enthusiastic that he was sorry that we had to leave after about three hours of wondering in the graves. The area is huge and, unfortunately, we didnt have time to visit everything.
MoreNice historic placeEasy to get there and visit
