Opened in 1981, the natural history museum offers an earthquake simulator & activities for children.
Lovely museum perfect for kids. Our best souvenir from Heraklion town!
Very informative on the wildlife and the geology of Crete, and you have to try the Earthquake simulator. Its a must.
Lots of stuffed animal displays. I liked the earthquake simulator and the little section with simple physics experiments.
A really interesting place for a reasonable price if you like going to natural history museums. Definately worth the money and time - you can easily spend 2 hours there.
Loved this museum! Great dinosaur section with the latest information, even had a few I hadnt heard of before.
Only the earthquake simulator worth to try, everything else is not really interesting. Maybe if you travel with kids below 8 years old, they maybe enjoying this type of museum other than historical type. But for adult tourist, no need to make the journey here.
For 7.50euro is bit expensive, coz it not much thing to showcase as a museum, if with kid this will be a great place, afterall can skip this place.
A good museum - it has mostly models of animals, but there are also other things, such as moving dinosaur models, an earthquake simulator, real insects and small animals, fossils (a piece of a deinotherium jaw is quite impressive), and info posters in greek and english. The posters cover a lot of topics: geology, dinosaurs, animals, plants, tsunamis/earthquakes. There was also an additional exhibition about phenomena related to light: colors, plasma, and optical illusions.Lots of stuff for kids: mini caves, archeological sites, camps, things like that. There is a discount for students. In general its a good place for both kids and adults.
Great place to visit although the day we went it was very hot inside....made it a shorter visit as a result
Great place to be visited. However there is no airconditioning inside, and it was too hot...
Surprisingly impressive museum in a well know tourism-oriented destination. Have some quite interactive sections like the earthquake simulator.
Beautyfull place to relax from beaches and sun. Interesting for adults and special for youngsters.
As national history museums go this is quite a simple one and - I would say - slightly overpriced at 7.50. But I’m guessing it would be great fun for children which is what it’s definitely aimed at.
Nice place lots of stuffed real size animals and made really well. Also a little bit of dinosaurs but that was actually less interesting. No air conditioner which was quite annoying
If you are interested in the flora and fauna of Crete and the south east Mediterranean region this is the place for you. It accommodates well children through a dedicated science exploration area that leads to a playground which acts as a nice break for the kids without the attention for all the “grown up” stuff that you find in a museum. The top attraction is definitely the seismic table, which explains what earthquakes are in a dynamic/reactive way which can be fun both for children and adults!
Its very nice to visit this museum at the beginning of your trip to Crete, because theres a lot to learn about the flora and the fauna of the island and I think its so fun to travel around crete and recognise things you saw at the museum!I went with my partner, were both in our twenties and we really enjoyed it.Its free for students (just remember you student idwhich is wonderful.A part from the exhibitions on plants and animal, theres a lot on minerals, prehistoric creatures and also physics!
Small museum but very interesting exhibits. Super area for kids.
Nice expositions, not very rich though, but a lot of them is pretty weared. On top of that there was no air conditioning, so its not recommended for a visit in hot summer days. The best part was the earthquake simulator in the lowest floor. I would recommend it to everyone to experience.
Really nice museum, with earthquake simulator, excellent kids area. Kind personnel and good gift shop. Beware the dinosaurs.
They close BEFORE 4:30pm! All museums I’ve been to let me in even 5 minutes before. Please change your timing and make it 4:15pm as 5 is not truthful
Its a very nice museum. It has interactive features and an earthquake simulator which is awesome!! There were very few people there so its nice to escape the tourist crowds.
Great! Also for kids! A must seen in Heraklion.
Amazing to see and learn the history of 9000 years back. The museum is well constructed and fascinating.
Great way to spend a couple of hours.Really enjoyed the Earthquake simulator, makes you realise how bad they can be!
Really nice.i love dinosaurs so for me it was an interesting experience.i really want to come here again and vist the museum.the dinos inside have moving parts so when you pass by they motion their head or tails.its kinda cute.i liked this floor the best.and the earthquake simulation was interesting as well.
Excellent choice to visit with young children! We spend 2h there and the kids were delighted!
More for the local students didnt leave with a great knowledge of Cretian natural history.
Awesome museum for families. Great interactive childrens area, lots of English interpretation. Earthquake simulation was really fun and informative. Worth a visit.
Great Natural History Museum. Exhibition is very well displayed, with good information for the visitors. Some interesting interactive displays. The guided tour makes everything even better.
Nice museum for kids, not really for adults. The earthquake-simulator was cool and helpful, especially if youve never experienced a strong earthquake. One (bignegative for me: the space for the mongal gerbils is way too small (in general, the exhibits were poorly made). They are active animals... I observed two trying to dig through the glass... Not enough space to dig, hide and run around. It was honestly sad and upsetting to watch. I hope they change this! I couldnt find the staff person anymore to talk about this. It also gives kids the impression that its ok to keep animals like this.
The best museum for kids we ever visited here in greece, my kids loved to see all, the diorama animal, the real life animal, the dinosaurus. They have place to kids explore and play and listen the stories, also the have a little library with kids book stories not only in greek, but also in english, germany and france. And we can try earthquake simulation. Worth visited with 7,5€ adult ticket, and 4€ for a kids.
Very nice museum. Children love it. It has a bigger potential than the way it actually is. Its possible to find interesting permanent and temporary collections.
When I visited here it was still quiet as it is not the official tourist season. There is so much information about the animals in there, which was great to read (I like reading all the info 😉). The earthquake simulator is a very good addition to the museum, if you have ever wondered what a real earthquake feels like.
The earthquake simulator was rather good! The stuffed animal in cases seem a bit old fashioned. The kids in the place seemed enthusiastic about the animatronic dinosaurs.
I grew up in Heraklion and it has always been one of my favorite places in the city. Whenever I visit Heraklion I try going back at least once. The museum team is doing an amazing work and they keep evolving and adding new things despite all difficulties that I am sure they are finding. My only hope is that they finish all of the exhibition spaces at some point to see the museum 100% complete.
Very nice place to see and understand the nature of Creta. You can see recreation of animals from ancient times to resent live ones. The building is big and well made. The earthquake machine is extraordinary experience. The museum is following the covid measures at the best way so its also safe.kind and helpful people are working here. Good job.
Great Place for the whole family. Very kind staff and really a lot to learn about history and science.
Not expensive, but we spent most of our time laughing at how bad most of the exhibits are. The optical illusion section was hilarious, the poor reptiles had dry water bowls, the earthquake simulator was okay, a *lot* of it out of order. There is no real natural history (unless you include the foam dinosaurs or taxidermy). Probably fine with kids, but not for adults looking to see anything meaningful.
I came there for the dinosaurs, but I end up talking about proto elephant with the girl from chlid scholarship section. It was really nice conversation. Thank you! 😄
A must for kids and anyone interested in nature. The museum is under renovation but most part is open.
The earthquake simulation is very useful for kids to be familiar with!
Great experience! It has all sorts of things like dinosaurs, animals with explanations about them and their natural habitats, light and sound experiments, etc. There is even an earthquake simulator. The personnel was also very polite and very helpful.
A perfect place if you travel with kids. My daughter 12 years old loved it. There is a corner for children which is interactive. Huge dinosauruses and earthquake simulation, real snakes and other things make this place worth visiting!
Natural history museum with a lot of local objects.. also earthquake simulation very interesting
If you have kids it’s a must visit place. If not you will enjoy for sure. You can see the evolution of the man, various dinosaurs, some cool illusions with mirrors and experience a live earthquake!
You can easily spend a bit of time in here. I really went for the earthquake simulator and it was an interesting experience. It was very interesting to experience what a 5 Richter earthquake feels like in different situations. But it was overall a nice way to spend an afternoon.
Nice museum. You learn a lot and there are good activities for kids. Make sure to take a tour into the kids area (lowest floorand the side rooms with interactive learning. Lots of anmals and dinosaurs. Nice for kids and adults. If you know english the cinema is interesting.
A great place to increase your knowledge about lots of animal species including dinosaurs. It makes it more interesting for families. Estimate around 3 hours for a full round. It is definitely worth it.There is discount for families with 3 kids and more. Unfortunately, no parking is provided. Dont hesitate to visit the earthquake educational simulator!
Nice museum. Guide very nice and competent. Lot of animal to see.even some alive. Lot of experiment to try by yourself (light.laser.plasma ball. Mirror.illusion....)also a earthquake simulator. Lot of fun. And good remembers. Dont hesitate to touch. To try. The science
Ideal for families! The earthquake simulation is a unique experience. Large variety of exhibits.
