A very good religious place. This is a place where most christians want to come to. Other religions also visit here (Im a buddhist but i visited there.This church was made in Dutch period. However, this is a really good place. Its also safe to bring your kids here.

About the same time another 700 Catholics migrated from Jaffna peninsula into Wanni forests. When these two communities met in Madhu they installed a new shrine with the statue.ExpansionsWith the revival of Catholic faith by missionaries such as Saint Joseph Vaz, Oratorian priests expanded the small shrine in the late 17th century.With the arrival of British to the island, the persecution ceased, but the number of Catholics remained small, with just 50,000 members in 1796.In spite of such a small community the shrine at Madhu started to attract pilgrims from all over the country.The stifling of Jesuit authority which had started in 1773 in the subcontinent led eventually to the suppression of the Society of Jesus in Madhu by 1834.The building of the new church was initiated by Bishop Bonjean in 1872 and his successors built a facade, a spacious presbytery, a restful chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Madhu church is a highly venerated place of worship with many miracles attributed to the miraculous nature of this holy church which is frequented by a large number of Catholic devotees from all over the world.The mass timings is from morning 6am to 1pm and 3 to 7pm. The shop for candles and administrative office is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm. The cheapest way to get from Colombo to Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu is to train which costs Rs. 2400 - Rs. 3200 and takes 5h 12m.On the arrival they will check the ID and Bags, also Mask is necessary. Shoes are not allowed inside, photography is not allowed also inside the church. There is no seats inside the church however it’s clean to be seated outside. Candles and other necessary items are available in the shop.They are huge seating outside and Ave Maria statue outside is divine. The candle lit place on the right side of the church.Please check the website for timings and important days. However it’s pleasant to be there with the family. Important tip - please collect the blessed mud from the church.

When the violence escalated the people sheltered in the premises had to flee further north; and the sacred the statue itself had to be moved, and was returned to the shrine at the end of the war.

Considered as the most sacred church for Christians in Sri Lanka (although it is thought to have been constructed over an ancient Hindu shrine).The church houses a statue of the virgin Mary carrying baby Jesus. This status is believed to be brought here in 1670 by Catholics fleeing Protestant Dutch persecution in Mannar.The Madhu church was affected by heavy shelling during the civil war and the statue was taken out of the church for safe keeping. When the war ended the statue was returned to the shrine.For more than 400 years, Catholics as well as non-Catholics have gathered around Our Lady of Madhu and it is believed that this holy shrine has miraculous powers.Madhu church is located 11Km from the Medawacchiya - Mannar highway. During the festival days there are private busses that operate on this 11km road to Madhu church. There is also a daily public bus ,(Mannar - Madhu churchthat leaves the Madhu road junction at 10.00am. The same bus leaves the Madhu church to Mannar at 12.15pm.If you are coming from Medawacchiya side, to catch this bus you have to take the 8.30am bus to Mannar from Medawacchiya and get down at the Madhu road junction.

The tourists visit this well-known spot in Sri Lanka. Before entering the church, the Sri Lankan army will conduct a security check. Backpacks and luggage are not permitted, and masks are required. Measurements for Covid have been set up. Parking is free and there are lots of spaces. Showers and restrooms are available.A very divine and tranquil site to visit with 400 years of history. Respect the guidelines as there is no photography allowed here. This is where you can receive holy water.Signboards in Tamil, Sinhala and English are provided. The lady of Madhu and various statues of Jesus Christ can be found in this lovely location.There is an indoor and outdoor canteen available. The priests blessing is available, but you must wait in line. It is possible to purchase candles and prayer books. Seating is offered on benches.

Well known Place for Christian. Needs to go around 11km inside from the Mannar-Madawache hwy. Nice place with many of statues of Jesus Christ. Prayer going on with both Thamizh and Sinhala. So many crowd and the place for waiting arrange by stone bench. Fully checked by SL Army before entering the Church. Parking is available on the place. Many entrance to Go to the Church. We maintained bathroom. There are food cafe also available outside and inside the Church area.

Madhu is a mystic jungle shrine dedicated to Mother Mary lying on a remote area in Mannar. The church is one of the few churches which is visited by Buddhists as well as Hindus from all over the country.The history of Madhu is interesting. The Portuguese invaded Sri Lanka in 1505 and missionaries started poring in to the country to convert the Buddhists and Hindus in to Catholicism by various means. Many on the coastal region converted to this new religion for favors from the new masters.Many Tamils from the North too fell in the hands of the catholic missionaries. In 1640 the Dutch took control of the coastal regions of and started spreading their form of Christianity in form of Dutch Reformed Church. in 1670, the dutch took Mannar under their control and some 20 Catholic Tamil families from Mantai fled inwards with a statue of Mary from the coastal town and settled down on an area called Marutha Madu which was then a small village on the Royal Ramessaram-Kandy route and a custom house for the Kandyan King. Later a group of about 700 tamil Catholics fleeing from Jaffna also joined this group.During this period, Madhu was Devale dedicated to Goddess Pattini which probably has been existing since the Anuradhapura Kingdom. Godess Pattini is worshiped by Sinhalese and Tamils irrespective of the religions in Sri Lanka.At some point of time a church was built on the ground of Pattini Devale and the devale disappeared without a trace. With the invasion of the English and the subsequent defeat of the Dutch from the coastal areas the Catholic prosecution stopped and the annual possession of Madhu was started in 1870. In 1876 foundation stone of the current church was laid down.

Very hot environment.you can enjoy the river bath in two place on Kala oya, one is (on the waynear Thanthirimale & the other place near the Madhu church.When u are using oyamaduwa road, please drive slowly. Very sacred place of Catholic people which is situated at a very far away place. Very hot climate, take a lot of water there if travelling. Alcoholic beverages usage is prohibited and please conserve the environment.

Catholic devotees believe this church to be miraculous. There are houses around the church if you wish to stay for more than one day, and a rent should be paid. Or else devotees can camp in the camp zone. But the place needs to have better sanitary facilities.

National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Madu..It is a miraculous place one of the biggest Catholic churches in Sri Lanka and this place having a great historic value.There was a huge wat had in the Sri Lanka and this was carried out by terrorists, but it was not possible for them to perform merciless damages to this miraculous Church. For many years I have come to this holy place and have not lost any of the people who have come here for years.This HOLY PLACE is located in MANNAR and you can go there by BUS or TRAIN it takes up to 6-8 Hours (Approx.You can get the ROUTE NO : 04 bus to go MADU JUNCTION and there are many more buses to go to church. This is sacred place to all the Catholic community. This church had a big history and a lot of miracles has happened in this premises. So believe in God and enter the premises so your prayers will definitely be heard.

This was my second time. I feel blessed after visiting Madu Church ♥ This place is filled with miracles and lots of blessings of Mother Mary ( Our Lady of Madu. There are masses in both Sinhala and Tamil languages. Sundays (6 am Tamil Mass, 7am Sinhala Mass, 10:15 am Sinhala and Tamil mixed Mass). And there are houses where you can spend days after booking from the church office. Price range 500LKR and above for a night with Normal basic facilities. I believe that as the Catholics, facilities dont matter, only the Blessings are enough. Because you cant think of comfortability all the time.

Very sacred place among Catholics. Located in the middle of nowhere and for years under war church was inaccessible for most. Yet in the seasons the place fills with devotees. The church has lots of accommodation facilities for visitors.
