National Railway Museum in Gawler

Great walk down memory lane with my Grandson. Well set out and great people working there.

If you like trains this is the place for you! Whether your 1 or 100 there is something to do or learn here.

You can’t go in as many of the trains as you used to, there’s more signs (and less creepy manikins :( and it’s not what I remember but it’s well looked after, run by people that are passionate, and a cheap day out 👍👍👍

Two train rides and a huge place to cover. Lots of historical trains and its engines on display. Looked at everything in one day. Took almost 2 hours to complete the entire museum in details. Did not take a volunteer with me. Coming from India where train rides are very common, I loved this place still.

We took our 5 year old grandson today. He was very bored. Unfortunately there really isn’t enough interactive stuff for a 5 year old. He enjoyed the train ride but that was about all.That’s not to say that the place wasn’t absolutely wonderful for any adult train enthusiast. The work that has gone into the exhibits is unbelievable!

This museum was canned recently by a rail person. I disagree. Mr Tim Fischer was correct a very good an well presented rail museum.

For a start there is no point in visiting if you have been in the last 5 years, nothing has changedAlso be aware most of the people in the shop are very grumpy and dont like if you forget your membership card.Also dont volunteer because if you dont get along with some of the higher people, they will bully you until you leave and also try and stop you from talking to friends that you have made while you were there.

The night time ghost tour with Adelaide Haunted Horizons is great fun. You get done excellent history of the site, machinery and why its believed the site and items are haunted.Ill happily come back in the day, or night!

Had a great time with the young lad. Lots of great trains to see. Lots of information about the history of South Australia’s rail industry. Highly recommend you take the kids to see this museum.

Great day out! Fun little train ride around the whole place. Being able to walk through some of the trains was pretty cool too!

Went along as they had a day where the old 2000 "Jumbos" would be open to the public. I used to catch these every day in the 90s and early 2000s and had always wanted to look inside a drivers cab of one and I finally got the opportunity!Other than that, NRM is always a great visit, Im a fan of trains and always love visiting and seeing them all.

A place to bring kids to understand about the Australian Rail history

Fantastic place for families, great historical trains, set out very well, and all the volunteers should be so proud, so go on have a look you want be dissapointed and kids will love it

Amazing collection of trains. You really need several hours to properly look at everything. You can climb onto some of the trains so there are fun things to do for kids. I love the little exhibit about Bob the Railway Dog.

This place was amazing. Was cool to see all the older style trains and get to see what it was like inside some of them and learn a bit about what life was life living and working on the trains.

Seems like theres a good story to tell here, but the museum is disorganized without a real direction to it. Most of the volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly, but we had a less than pleasant run in with a Tony who seems to have few interests beyond verbally abusing children.

Such an interesting and fun visit for the whole family. My son loved the mini engine ride around the museum and pretending to dine in the dinner carriage. Very quiet. Many of the trains were closed, and we would like to come back another time. A tour would be wonderful.

Great time for the family, had a blast. So much to see, take a trip back in time. Have a few rides on the little train, fun for the whole family. Highly recommend going.

Loved the small steam engine we got to ride on and the displays were a good historical interpretation. A kiosk serving hot food would have been nice.

This is an awesome explore and the little railway is so much fun no matter what size kid you are. The exhibits are mostly accessible but some areas are not. That museum is volunteer run and they do an awesome job at keeping the maintenance up. I totally enjoyed my visit. It would be handy to have a little more interpretation but whats there on about half of the exhibits is good.

I did the Adelaide Haunted Horizons paranormal tour last night( 28/1/22This is an amazing site! So much rail history, something for everyone! The guide Mikki was fantastic, each section was something different! Highly recommended, an experience you can’t get anywhere else!

Wonderful experience!!We get to have free ride on the little train 🚂. The old gentlemen work there are very nice and welcoming. We get to see real locomotives 🚂. No need to mention how cool it is to sit in the cabin and pretend you are in Agatha Christie’ s book. One little pity is that, due to the COVID restrictions, we didn’t get to visit the dinning cabin. 🥺🥺 Overall, definitely recommended!!

Great place to visit if you love trains and nostalgia. Three different train rides to experience, old trains to explore. The staff are extremely friendly, theres adequate facilities and great refreshments, the atmosphere is fun and friendly, perfect for a family day out!

If you are a train lover, this is the place to visit. Loved it, the displays were fantastic. I was in Train Heaven. The staff were great. I have nothing else to say but, come and visit and see for yourself how good this place is.

Very good collection of rollingstock and railway paraphernalia. Ride the miniature railway for a short thrill then wander amongst the collection of engines and carriages. Basic food and drinks available on site.

A great place to spend 2 hours with family. Free touring train in the museum, worth the visit.

Both my children loved their time at the National Railway Museum - very accommodating and friendly staff. Lots to see and enjoy.We really enjoyed the small model trains🥰

The museum was lots of fun and very informative. Well worth the money if you like trains.

Great collection and pretty good presentation, needs a bit of an update and to be brought in to the 21st century, but otherwise very much worth a visit! Would 100 percent recommend it to any rail fan or family looking for something to do, try to allocate about 1-3 hours depending on how much you like to look at things. They also have a miniature railway for kids to ride that is sometimes steam hauled.

Great place to visit if you are a fan of trains. The little train is great for kids. A wealth of information about railways in Australia.

Good museum to visit when in Port Adelaide. Interesting rail history is on display. Kids will love it too, especially the train ride around the museum grounds. The museum shop is interesting & the volunteers are friendly & helpful. There is plenty of parking on site. Plus the amenities are available & are clean & tidy.

Great place to bring the kids. My kids love riding on the trains and exploring the old display trains and carriages. They have often have events with some great activities for kids.Awesome at Night with the Haunted Horizons Ghost Tours and Paranormal Investigations. Had some pretty creepy and unexplainable things happen!Definitely recommend day or night.

A great museum, staffed by knowledgeable volunteers. A large selection of Australian history spread across a number of other sheds. Occasional running days where you might get a ride on a red hen or a steam engine, and a small train doing rides every day. Food facilities are limited, and covid has forced them to restrict access to some exhibits.

A nice detailed experience sharing the history of Adelaide and interstate rail way life. Its nice to see a glimpse into what life was like back then as well while drawing in railway connections where applicable.When you walk in, you are in the gift shop with a wide range of kids toys and railway related memorabilia. Its wonderful to see a great supply of kids toys so they can engage in the culture. You can then walk towards the first main shed which takes you over the mini train crossing that weather permitting offers families a great little ride around the site.Inside the two main sheds there is plenty to see and do for you and old alike so you can easily and freely walk through at your own pace while you see, touch and smell our railway history. Off to the side of the main shed are exhibits with engaging stories and images of our rail history as a nice addition to the vehicles on display.Coming from a family of railway workers, this place will always hold a special place for me and its great to see it only grow and enhance the visitor experience to encourage more people to learn about our history.

Really enjoyed walking through here and the kids had a ball. A lot to see with some food and drinks available. We went during an event so there were additional shows and stalls to look through.

Sensational day at the family fun day. Cracking weather, friendly, helpful amazing staff. Bill and team at the mini train, we went back a few times, super friendly, engaged the kids and an absolute wealth of knowledge. Thanks NRM for putting on a family affordable, value packed event. Worth a membership, for sure!

The National Railway Museum is a very good museum to visit in Port Adelaide. They are in the process of making some improvements to the Museum.

A very interesting museum to go to and learn about the history of trains. Its cool how you can go inside the trains and see for yourself how people used to travel on them.

Great place to bring kids at any age. I went on a special day where they had plenty of extra activities and food.

It is a ok place to take the kid for a bit fun. Not much train you can actually step in. A short Mini train ride was the most attractive thing for the kid. family ticket is not too expensive but just do not feel worth it

Great place for family who love trains. The reception lady is very nice and friendly. You can take a ride on a little train which runs every 30 minutes. The only problem I found that it is not a big place and kids does not have enough activities but they still can experience a lot though.

Great experience. Really helps to appreciate the scale of trains etc. Would be really good with kids. Eye opener on South Australias rail history.

The trains were so full of our history which was very entertaining. A fantastic example of the accomplishments and ingenuity of Australias trains. Very cool to spend a day there so much to do.

Theres so much history to tell. Love the history and on how they keep this place running. There was a short train ride and it was cool 😊
