National Museum of Nepal in Kathmandu
Description
Old and tired museum. Not worth the detour to go.
Closed. No indication it would be. Was told by the guard it was because of a national holiday. Pity no one else in Kathmandu knew what holiday it was.
MoreCouldnt see much as there werent any lights inside the museums. From the little I could see it seemed like there were a number of interesting pieces.
MoreIf you want a comprehensive history of Nepal while at a tranquil, out of the bustling city, this is the place to visit. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience and to top it of the tickets are around $1
MoreWe know our history through this museum
It is situated in front of the military museum and it has a parking space in front of the military museum. The National Museum is divided into three major areas ranging from Nepals historical artifacts, Lord Buddha artifacts, ecological, human evolution, and different tribes of Nepal artifacts. It is covered in a small area with limited equities like a washroom but no drinking areas or cafeterias are available. It has a few sitting chairs in the open space and there are lovers at the entrance. You need to pay the mobile charges too if you want to click the photo by mobile. The museum is small but equipped with good artifacts with proper information.
MoreNational Museum is the first museum that lies on the bottom level of Swayambhu, a holy hill of Kathmandu Valley. It occupies about 50 Ropani of land with different types of buildings, gardens, and opens space in its compound. Now it provides the service to collect and display rare and precious art heritages. The history of this museum shows that at the beginning it was an Arsenal house, built by Prime Minister General Bhimsen Thapa in 1824. After it, in 1926 Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher added two wings in the north and south of the main building and it was given the name of Silkhana Museum. Later in 1938 Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher changed its name to Nepal Museum and its doors were opened to the public on 12th February 1939 (Amatya,1999:45).
MoreI was absolutely mesmerized by the works of art in the museum. There are different rooms which depict the architecture and lifestyle of the 18th century. There are enormous colourful canvas, amazing sculptures, exquisite silver and gold jewellery and even kings and queens´ garments. This is a must visit place in the Valley.
Morelots of art from the 15th-20th century. No backpacks are allowed in the museum but they provide lockers which is lovely!
MoreI went there when I was in grade 7. I still remember King Prithvi Narayan Shahs "fight khelnu agadi ko luga".... was a very proud moment for me.
MoreThe space gives a glimpse of the past, and present of Nepal. Divided in different sections, it covers mythology, craft, science, among others. Photos are not allowed that gives a good time to read and learn from captions provided.
MoreDo not miss out on the doll museum inside and history about Buddhism
The National Museum has 3 buildings to visit. Kids will enjoy visiting the place. Combine National Museum visit together with Military museum which is opposite to the National museum. Need to pay extra fee if you want to take pictures inside the museum. The garden is beautiful. The place gets crouded during public holiday.

MoreGood khukuri shop in Kathmandu Nepal
Wonderful place to visit if you want to know about the history, ancient archeology, culture of Nepal. There are variuous sections inside the museum. You could find wooden scluptures, bronze statues, the entire monetary section showcasing history of money in Nepal. You get fasinated and feel as if you went back in the time. Even visiting once, you could learn so many things which textbook doesnt often tell you. Chhauni museum is piece of our Nepalese history. Looking at the ancient, historical stuffs, you could get a different perspectives on how you see things. The experience is surreal. Also, there is seperate building dedicated to Lord Buddha. Nepal, being birthplace of lord Buddha, there are many historical stuffs which is directly linked up with Siddhartha Gautama (Lord Buddha). I say, its a must visit place if you are in Kathmandu Valley.
MoreAffordable and nice experience. Good for seeing Nepal history and art. 150 for foreigners, 25 for Nepali. Grounds are Currently under development, but still really nice. Mostly idols and Buddhist things, but also some military things, natural history section and really cool Lifesize dioramas of various Nepali cultural groups. A really nice few hours. Fine for family. Could spend a whole day if you read everything posted. Parking across street at military museum.
MoreThe tickets are also very cheap and the place is also very beautiful both in historical and natural manner. For the visitors the monument serves to relive the battles fought on the grounds of Nepal. The main attractions are collection of historical artworks (sculpture and paintingsand a historical display of weapons used in the wars in the 18-19th century. The museum has separate galleries dedicated to statues, paintings, murals, coins and weapons. It has three buildings — Juddha Jayatia Khate Sala, Buddha Art Gallery and the main building which consists of natural historical section (collection of species of animals, butterflies and plants), cultural section and stamp section.

This Museum is one of the most important and very useful to gain information about Nepalese History. This is one of the best Museum in the World.
MoreI think this museum is one of the most well maintained museum in Nepal. Where you can find history of the country. The place is very clean with staffs looking after the place. The only drawback is that for every building you have to get a separate ticket for each, but that is just a small matter compare to the epic elements the museum has to offer and its worth it.
MoreI have gathered some nostalgic memories of the place and there are things from the history of Nepal that can be found here and it is just fascinating to learn and look at it.I suggest you to get a guide to explain things if youre not familiar with the place.

MoreThis is the largest museum in Nepal. It has located in Chhauni. This has very kind of historical arms, coin, clothes, statue, book and many more. The last earthquake had destroyed it very badly. Only two block is open for tourist and one block is closed now. The closed section had coin. So if you go there you are not able to see old coins.
MoreVery clean peaceful with informative and interesting surroundings. Workers out there are very helpful as well as friendly to share information they know. Amazing experience roaming around there.
MoreA museum that history and art enthusiast should be visit. Lovely premises. However, theyve closed a section for renovation. Hopefully, it gets done in a couple of months.
MoreBefore of couple of months ago, I have been there. This museum is a good place to visit with kids. The museum has statues, paintings, murals, coins and weapons. MoreThis is the place is the National Museum. there is huge collection of our ancient things. It delicately saves our history for the future generations.I am very happy to see the historical car, bullet, guns. The place is quiet awesome regarding rules and regulations. Army protected area.
MoreLove to spend time in this really great place. A lot of historical artifacts. You will learn a lot about history of Nepal from this place. The crowd is not very big if you visit in work days so making some time to visit here even during work days is not a waste. Visited more than 5 times, the great feeling being here never gets old.
MoreAmazing collection of historical artifacts divided into three buildings. Make sure to pay a little extra and get the permission ticket to take pictures within the museum.Such a well maintained and regulated place. All museums should have an official charge for allowing people to take picutres. The staff is wonderful and very friendly too.
Moreit is a beautiful place to visit where a lot of ancient paintings and sculptures of Nepal can be studied wellit is a must visit place of every art endeavourbut check your visiting dates as it is closed on Tuesday and it gets closed on Monday at 2:30Except these 2 days museum are opened everyday from 10am to 4 pm
MoreThis is a very important place for visitors whod like to know more about the history of Nepal and this museum has many artifacts from the medieval and modern nepal along with some ancient artifacts dating back to the time of Shakyamuni Gautam Buddha are on display. There are seperate buildings that house these artifacts and for the ease of visitors the museum has managed to develop different buildings for the arts and suclpture, weapons and ancient tools and the Buddhas hometown artifacts. These buildings were earlier built by the Rana prime ministers of Nepal about a 100 years ago and the combination of nepalese architecture mixed with neo-classical architecture can be seen. Theres a big garden for visitors to refresh afterwards so anyone can seat underneath a tree or on a bench and relax after enjoying the views of these old and valuable artifacts.. However in my personal experience after the 2015 April earthquake a section of these display remains closed due to the damage incurred on the second floor of that building and its a bit sad experience for visitors to not be able to have a glimpse of that particular section which had amazing things on display. We can only hope that the government of Nepal escalates the effort to fully restore that particular section so the visitors dont get disappointed. It is a must visit museum in Kathmandu if you wish to learn a few things about the glorious past of this country and very easily accessible from any part of kathmandu..
MoreMaintenance should be done. Good place to know about ancient Nepal.
Quite good with dedicated rooms & buildings.Lot of old, historical metal works, wood works, stone works, paintings etc...Sad to know that one of the storey is closed because of the effect caused by Earthquake.Overall, its nice & one must visit this place.
MoreTo be honest i never expected the museum to be that well maintained. More maintenance definitely needed and renovation of the main building needs to be done asap. I had a really good tine visiting the national museum of our country after a very long time.
MoreThis museum is also known as mini nepal as it describes sevral structures of Nepal and show history of Nepal .There lots to see - mostly religious statues and of course, the highlight is the Buddha Museum. One can easily spend over two hours just absorbing the culture and history of Nepal here.
MoreCollection of historic and semi modern weapons of Nepal. Lots of history of military of Nepal. Really worth the visit.
MoreEnjoyed looking at historically significant objects from different times, gives a good insight about Nepali History.
MoreThe National Museum of Nepal (Rashtriya Sangrahalayais a popular attraction of the capital city of Kathmandu. About a century old, the museum stands as a tourist destination and historical symbol for Nepal. Being the largest museum of the country of Nepal, it plays an important role in nationwide archaeological works and development of museums. For the residents of Kathmandu, the monument serves to relive the battles fought on the grounds of Nepal. The main attractions are collection of historical artworks (sculpture and paintingsand a historical display of weapons used in the wars in the 18-19th century. The museum has separate galleries dedicated to statues, paintings, murals, coins and weapons.[1] It has three buildings — Juddha Jayatia Kala Shala, Buddha Art Gallery and the main building which consists of natural historical section (collection of species of animals, butterflies and plants), cultural section and philatelic section.
MoreAs the name says, it is the main museum of Nepal. Great for history lovers and everyone who wants to have a look in Nepals history. There are multiple buildings for different sections. Opposite of Military museum, so can visit both in same trip.
