Addis Ababa Arada, Ethiopia, Korem
Ancient relics, contemporary paintings & the famous fossilized bones of the early hominid Lucy.
Brief comments on the stories of the objects. Good.
The museum is worth visiting if youre in Addis Ababa and have extra time, but overall it is not well organized and its a bit underwhelming, especially as a national museum for a country that has such a long and rich history as Ethiopia. There are unique pieces important to the history of Ethiopia but many are not well-preserved, are unlabeled, and the museum did not provide history and context for a lot of what they were displaying. The most impressive displays were the fossil remains of early humans and I thought this section was presented much better, with much better explanations. Unfortunately, at least when I visited, the majority of fossils on display were fakes, with signs hung saying that the real fossils were elsewhere in the museum being studied. Looking at a copy of Lucy is not the same as looking at Lucy, so as necessary as it may be for preservation or study or what have you, I did feel a little cheated.
It was the best I recommend you
great place but. our country needs a bigger National Museum in my opinion!!
I’m really disappointed.. It’s not well maintained and clean; it’s very sad that the historical treasure is treated like this.. There are dust everywhere as if it had been closed for a long time..The fee is around 50 BIR, you can get the ticket in the museum
A very insightful visit, I learned a lot! I especially enjoyed the lower level on the origins of humans, but the rest on the history of the countrys history, people and culture was also great.
Amazing to see oldest human fossil. Lucy.Museum could be better displayed.
It was cool museum and selam look like really and I just scared to see her 👀
If you want to see the oldest human skeleton in the world, please visit the national museum of Ethiopia at 5Kilo Addis Ababa.
Simple but rich in history. Political, economic, social, cultural history of Ethiopia. 50 Birr at the entrance.
This museum is very informative and has plenty of rare and valuable items but it’s not preserved well. Also there are items that are not labeled so I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. It is dark and dusty inside. The staff are not very helpful. The ticket lady at the entrance wasn’t professional at all. Entrance is 30birr for locals and 50 for foreigners. Overall, for 50birr and 40 minutes of your time, it’s worth a visit.
An interesting thing to find one of the most important discovered items in the world.
The land of abbysinia and her rich cultural background, are on full display. The museum boasts several floors filled with archeological items found in Ethiopia. Written works and vast array of historical features are available for viewing. A must for anyone on a short visit to Addis.
It has a lot of history of the civilization. A route path should be created on the floors. More guides should be employed to explain the events of the past and how it effects the present. Lighting and overall look to be improved
Loved my visit to this museum, its well organized, clean and staff is very professional. Lucy fossil is displayed here.
The garden around the building is very lush and beautiful, almost worth a visit on its own. The museum is quite nice - we especially liked the range of art displayed on the first floor. And of course, Lucy :)
Not bad. Yet needs to step up in many ways.
I had a chance to see it from entrancing till my last steps to leave the museum, I was bombarded with the Royal Dresses, the artifacts, the cultural instruments, the stools... I took my daughter when she was 3, so Id show her what Ethiopian history is, but in middle our tour I completely forgot to tell her anything as I too was amazed, mesmerized and joyed with what I was seeing. I must visit again and give yall pictures. Till then ✌️
I visit the museum for the 3rd time and it is under renovation. As always I love and impressed by our ancestors and archaeological finds of #landoforigins. Hoping that the renovation and new building really represent Ethiopian rich culture and tourism resources in magnificent way. the entrance ticket is really cheap for students and local residents.
A very touching and beautiful historic scene.
Proper first place to visit in 2014 Eth.C as the spirit of holidays due to our Ethiopian New Year, I figured to start from our very own National Museum of Ethiopia💚💛❤Where I learnt about the rich culture and variety of my peoples history that is preserved properly. It is a great experience, a walk through our history due to the exhibits and various collection of objects and materials of cultural, religious and historical importance. It was definitely an enjoyment as well as education for me.
4 Stars because of the great collection of hominid fossils, including the famous "Lucy" and the more recently discovered "Yellem."The hominid fossils are in the basement, and if you reallllly take your time and read every label and plaque, it might take all of 35 minutes to see all.If not for this (impressivefossil collection, this museum would not be worth the 50 Birr admission.
The basement was very interesting with a representation of Selam and Lucys bones. Some of the elements on display were unfortunately not lit.The first floor is interesting despite the lack of information on the artists names and the year of the paintings and sculptures. The second floor is very interesting and would benefit from additional information on the ethnic traditional dresses.Overall very good experience. It is sad the books at the boutique are out of print.
Awesome place of interest. An area to get first-hand knowledge about the rich history of Ethiopia.
See the famous “Lucy” the over 3.2Million years old lady skeleton preserved to date.Meet the old century kings, artifacts: farm tools, clothing, warfare tool, cooking and cutlery, family setting and all.Various paintings are also assorted. The entrance fee charged is very very minimal and affordable
Home of the famous prehistoric fossil Lucy (Dinkneshand others. All the prehistoric fossils, different shapes of stone from the stone age are found in the basement. Art and artifacts are on the 1st, 2nd and 3 third floor. If you love post cards, you can get them for just 2 ETB from the 3rd floor. You can get books published during hailesilassie era for just 25 ETB.
This is a place that you must visit during your stay at Addis Ababa, full of history, full of heritage, I like all items specially LUCY and outer yard art works.
This was a major highlight in my visit to Addis. I got to know more about the rich history of the country; their kings, the struggle and wars fought. And I met Lucy and her lineage.
What a good reminder to everyone who might have forgotten that humanity started in Ethiopia. Worth taken time to visit.
Its a good chance for me to visit this museum.. I feel that we are as Egyptians are sharing the same culture and the history as well .. I will come to this place one more time.
A must see place if u find yourself in Addis Ababa. The price is crazy cheap, and toilets should be improved.
Home of the world famous "Lucy". Unfortunately very dark and with poor lighting so the pieces do not get the exposure they deserve...Unfortunately, it is so gloomy that the exhibition pieces cannot be viewed well. Thus much potential is given away. Even with polarizing filter, wide angle fixed focal length and post processing the pictures are still quite dark. A pity considering the significance of the exhibits.
Some great paintings and photos from history. Exciting building externally, but may need a bit of an update internally
Its interesting to visit the National Museum of Ethiopia. It trys to show an over all image of the country. Heritages in the Museum have been collected from different areas including south Eritrea.
Low entry price and lack of suitable alternatives in this city make it a worthwhile visit. As per the pictures, there are some stunning artworks housed there, and other artifacts. The building is a bit rundown but other than that it was a pleasant stay.
Was a beautiful experience. Saw the remains of Lucy and other historic artifacts.
Honestly you’ll only spend an hour or less here. The basement floor is full of great fossilised remains from extinct beings and also houses the well known “Lucy”. We aren’t totally convinced that it’s actually her and not a replica though. The upper floors are filled with the usual museum artifices - pottery, royal outfits and furniture, jewellery etc. There are minimal English explanations though so you end up strolling through them pretty quickly. If you have the time, I’d pop in but otherwise give it a miss.
This was such a wonderful place to visit. I really like the history that is held in this museum and would visit again when I am in Ethiopia next year. The one thing that I did not enjoy was the state of some of the artifacts. If they keep them with all this dust they will not survive very long. We really need to donate some money here.
10 bir. Very run down. Lots of history pieces that seem piecemealed together. But at least you can say you saw Lucy. Very anticlimactic
Nice visit and it worth it!! But... if it is a piece of National Heritage , it must be much well presented, I think Ethiopian history deserves to written and exhibited much better, the place is interesting but must be reformed completely .
It is worth checking out, if youre interesting cultural history & artifacts (though it is small - but it is well worth it)!!
Loved my time here and the fact that I got to see Lucy was amazing! The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable! Not very expensive to visit either.
Excellent museum in Addis Ababa that is cheap to enter.Expect to find historical artifacts from the Ethiopian Empire and bones from the hominid Lucy ~3.9 million years ago. They also have an Olmec head donated from Mexico.Amazing that the originals are on display with minimal security and there are priceless paintings on the top level with no glass protection
Great place to drop by. Head straight to Lucy downstairs before the crowds arrive. Then make your way upstairs (which tend to reduce in information the higher you go). Luckily for us we traveled the north before coming here so it made sense what we were looking at.Head to the Lucy restaurant afterwards which is worth it.
Ethiopian history in an hours time or so, good place to appreciate where It has come from as well as a havent for anthropologists of course.ust visit.
Dont expect to much. Upper floors are better. Entrance fee is 10 birr
Contains many interesting exhibits. The likes of some youll not find anywhere else.
Interesting but mostly terribly labelled collection. The basement section on early evolution of humans is the best. You don’t need anymore than an hour.
Very poor museography, old, kept in a very bad state, with broken lights and dirtiness. Nevertheless, the explanations in the basement are quite ok, and there are some interesting pieces like: “Lucy”, some carved stone artifacts and a couple of religious icons. It really needs a makeover.
Great place. You should bring a basic interest in history and paleontology. Four floors with "a lot of bones, stones and artifacts" that give a guideline through the countries amazing history, including the world renowned Lucy.
