National Museum Cardiff in Rhondda

Free to visit with only a recommended donation of £5. There is plenty to see in here and for the fellow (or felletwhovian there is plenty to notice from filming in the main concourse to the art gallery where "Galafrey falls, no more". Countless episodes have been shot inside and out...

I had a phenomenal time here when I went on a trip to Cardiff with my school! The exhibitions were completely outstanding, Ive never seen anything like it! The facts on the boards surrounding the artifacts and the dinosaurs were very interesting and I found my trip here very educational! I highly recommend going here and as someone from Pembrokeshire who was visiting this was completely marvellous! It also had a really nice gift shop! Didnt have the time to buy anything though it was severely tempting! If youre looking for an educational visit with little ones or even a fun day out with your family this is definitely the place for you! (The felt animals are extraordinarily detailed too which adds an extra layer of magic to the museum!)

Popped in whilst we were in the area and checked out some of the natural history exhibits. Some great taxidermy specimens and dinosaur skeletons! Interesting exhibits in both Welsh and English.

Good museum, got scared by the big shark, having seen a similar scary shark at the national marine aquarium in Plymouth when I was young which instilled a mild phobia of models of sharks. those of a nervous disposition like me should be aware that the models are realistic, but comforted that they can do no harm.

Wow! I wandered in after a little research and expected to be out again after an hour or so. How good can a free museum be, right? After having walked around for almost 4 hours (including lunchI can conclude I was very wrong. This museum is very good and well maintained, I highly recommend both the art and natural history parts of it.

Great day out for children. Staff are wonderful. Options for English or Welsh throughout. Art galleries are always great, and the exhibition (The Rules of Art?on when we visited was incredible.

Cardiff museum is one of the best in the United Kingdom in my opinion. Its a great free, fun and interesting option to have, and good for all weathers.The classical art section here is excellent with many masters on display such as Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Turner and more. The display is well laid out and comes with information about each painting or sculpture.There is a prehistoric section with information about dinosaurs, mammoths, fossils and so on. And the museum has rotating special exhibitions which change every few monthsThe building is also gorgeous, a fine example of Victorian era architecture

Great exhibits and friendly helpful staff. Lower levels probably more enjoyable for the kids, the art gallery upstairs may not appeal. Free entry too which is great initiative

It’s a must visit. You haven’t been to Cardiff unless you’ve been at the national museum. You could spend all day here and not notice time flying by. Cafe available inside. Toilet available, free and secured luggage locker,admission is free, photographing allowed but no video. Great and awesome staffs who are always ready to assist and help you enjoy the experience.

What a great museum for all ages! From the start of life up to the present day, its very informative and the displays are set out great. What I didnt appreciate was a £28 bill for 2 packs of sandwiches, 2 slices of cake, 2 packets of crisps and 2 hot drinks. Good tip, take food or eat out elsewhere. There a lockers there but need a coin to activate.Other than the hit from the cafe, was good for a few hours out.

We found it easy to drop off at the Museum from "City Site Seeing" bus. We had 4 children with us on that day so we decided to see the ground floor which contains free access area. The place is massive, and are so many things to see. Access to the toilets is from ground floor with stairs to underground level.As many reviews have mentioned, the ground floor contains the natural history geology, zoology and botany. Both, historical and current creatures of land and water. Dinosaurs, Mammoth, ocean creatures and strange plants and fungi all there.There are cinemas with short videos (in English and Welshabout various things such as volcanoes and formation of various rocks and metals.Also enjoyed the video about how mountains are formed quite amazing.Being with children, I think it was a good idea to stick to the ground floor at this time as I am sure there is a lot to learn and to process already and they would have gone tired and probably bored if we had to continue to the upper floor and visit the art gallery.After enjoying the ground floor visit, you could have a rest in the dining zone or onjoy the gifts and items displayed in the souvenir shop.For us, it was easy to get the "hop on hop off" bus from there back to our parking area at Cardiff Castle.

A beautiful place with some really very interesting and impressive exhibits. Paintings on display from such artists as Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Manet, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Gainsborough and Lowry.

A fantastic, FREE, place to visit.The displays are really well put together, loads of information and the staff are v approachable with loads of extra info on the exhibits. Def worth a visit!!

Went to the museum about a year ago and was very disappointed. But was very impressed this time, a lot more interesting exhibits well layed out.

Definitely visit when you come to Cardiff.The museum is relatively small. There are two floors: 1Nature/Science/Formation of Wales, 2Paintings, sculptures & pottery. It will take around 1 hour to fully see each floor.The highlights were the geological formation of Wales (floor 1and Impressionist paintings (floor 2). You will also ger a glimpse of Welsh landscape painter - Richard Wilson - works.The staff were very friendly.

Explored the museum for roughly 4 hours, lots to see with both the natural history and the art. Loved the art section most. Cafe was nice and the gift shop was great. Both coin press machines were out of order which was sad but okay. Definitely recommend as it’s free and lots to explore and learn

Enjoyed the French Impressionism paintings in the top floor of the museum; it hit my trip to Cardiff. The admission is free and the staffs are very friendly and helpful. Lots amazing collections in the museum and worth to spend a day reading and appreciating all the artwork and the historical background and creation ideas about them.

Nice museum. Staff very polite. There are many antiques to see like a Christian cross from X century as well as some famous paintings like Van Gogh, Monet or Botticielli.

I attended this museum today (27.7.2022), and was pleasantly surprised by what I found herein. Despite there being a dearth of staff, which was due to the pandemic, the staff were both helpful and courteous to me. I have Autism Spectrum Disorder, and the woman, who was in charge at the time, helped me greatly. Her kindness allowed me, and my father, who was with me, to have what I found to be the best gallery visit in the whole of Wales. She was excellent, and so were the artworks on display. However, I have one problem, namely the excessive price that I paid for a cupcake at the museum cafeteria, which was £3.60; I thought this was much more than it was worth. Overall, I thank the staff who were running this museum, for this is, in my opinion, the best art museum in Wales.

A very nice museum. The bottom part is all natural history and exhibitions (you need to pay to enter the exhibitions), the upper part is all art like Botticelli, Monet, Van Gough, etc and some pottery. The museum is very clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. Lovely selection of gifts at the gift shop!

What a fantastic museum. Artworks are fabulous and exhibitions are really worth visiting. You can take non-flash photographs which is great.

Huge museums with diversified exhibition, from natural history to contemporary art. Great to pay a visit when visiting Cardiff.

Very highly recommended for a lovely experience with the kids. It’s free admission for all and let’s the kids learn along the way. Lots of activities around.

Fascinating range of buildings and insights into Welsh life in the past. Lovely grounds. Pictures I have are only from around the castle.

A pretty big museum for adults and kids to explore. They have a great art collection on the second floor. The history of everything from the big bang to dinosaurs to geolgy and animals on the first. Gift shop and cafe on site as well. Free entry but can donate if you wish to.

Easy to park, pay and display parking. Free entry and a great display of various creatures, fossils, crystals and our favourites were the dinosaurs and mammoth. Perfect rainy day activity and if you keep an eye on the website you can see the latest exhibitions.Clean toilet facilities. We didnt use the café but it was full so perhaps a sign that it was good. Gift shop available to take home something to remember your trip. Id recommend going, just expect for your littles to want to jump to more exciting bits.

We had so much fun on our visit. The exhibits were really engaging for the kids and my 5 year old loved interacting with the ladies on the show and tell stations and particularly enjoyed holding the replica woolly mammoth tooth! 😊

Half Term break in Cardiff is not complete without a visit to the National Museum.Great experience for the kids and adults alike. Nicely setup and each section is quite well displayed.Currently building a new ramp for wheelchair and buggy access so should be even more welcoming and user accessible.Just across the road ftom Hilton Cardiff

Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the museum is worth a visit. Take time to enjoy this exhibition and get a perspective of some of the grit people out into capturing beautiful, thought provoking and impacting scenes.Be like bear, have a look what others see through a lens.

A really good visit to National Museum Cardiff today. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice too !

Huge varied collection. It can keep both kids and adults equally engaged. No tickets....just walk in and enjoy.

It has free entry. You can easily spend two hours there. I liked the evolution of the earth section. It also has another section with artwork and paintings

This is a brilliant afternoon out. Set in the heart of the city, theres lots to see even with some sections being closed off due to covid restrictions. Great place to bring the kids.

The content of the museum is similarly curated to impress a sense of awe and thoughtfulness. Whether your a group of tired friends looking to relax and goof around with modern art as a backdrop, a thoughtful individual looking reflect on life and renaissance art, or a young child looking to see some cool dinosaurs, Cardiff museum has it all. There’s a reason this is one of my favourite places in Cardiff, never mind the fact it’s free. In fact, I might head down now…

Check the website before you go for tickets (freeand see whats on. I didnt but as it was midweek it wasnt a problem. I enjoyed the commentary on the Rules of Art after I had seen the exhibition - it added understanding for me! The Natural History Halls are a separate entity packed full of facts and and interesting displays for younger folk. The crystal display is wonderful - nature is amazing. Pictures dont show the beauty of the formations.

If you like art, you will fancy to visit this museum: a good collection of impressionists, works of world famous painters, sculpture of Rodin and much more.If you enjoy nature and geology, you will find some interesting things to look at too. I am sure kids will love big prehistoric animals there.So its the universal museum for all people.Its free but you need to book your visit in advance.

The museum itself and its content are great to view but staff, especially front of house need better training. There is now an Eventbrite booking system due to COVID, which is totally fine until youre told they cant find your ticket - because they werent paying attention. Though tickets were booked in advance, the place was pretty much crowded. The one-way system is neither efficient because it is not signposted to direct you where you are and where next. No adequate signage for toilets nor lifts. Some of the staff were absolutely professional chatting with the younger ones, but others could not event bother giving the direction to the toilet, except by pointing towards it and still looking on whilst a kid was crouching in desperation. I had to ask them to assist. We didnt feel welcomed, as this security agent was literally on the neck of the group when moving through a number of rooms.

Amazing and interesting place. I would advice to book at least two hours of you want to see everything. We only read few plaques and in 1:45 h we couldnt see everything and had to rush to exit while we were upstairs as they were closing museum at 4:45pm.

I didnt know anything about Wales. Now after half a day of fun walk about in their site. I have more questions than ever!!😃

Great place if youre interested in natural history and/or arts, one of the best ones Ive visited, would definitely go back again to spend there more time.

Very friendly staff, we didnt realise we needed to book a ticket (obviously we should have really but hey 🤦‍♀️). The gentleman on the door booked us in there and then no issues.The lady at the start was very friendly and interacted with my son looking at the stars etc.My son loved the dinosaurs (but what else did we expect).Very clean throughout.A brilliant free day out.Shop is a tad expensive but considering its free to go to the museum, its to be expected as thats their income.

Went with a group of other students, and I had a very splendid time. Was simply educational and had a fantastic display of imagery and information. Free entry was complimentary and there is a gift shop and cafe inside too :)

Fabulous art collection a lot bequeathed by the Davies sisters. Some great Impressionism works including Monet. Less interested in natural history section. Quite a few galleries closed unfortunately. Why it’s being rehung now when they could have done it months ago when closed is a mystery. Free.

I loved the whole experience although it felt a little rushed, as people were coming in all directions so couldnt stand and look at all the exhibitions for too long. Probably best to avoid on school holidays. Other than that brilliant day out and very educational

place of a lot of learning, everything about the beginning of everything in nature, very well maintained, pleasant clean environment and all the staff are attentive and helpful, I hope to be able to come back soon to dazzle the sessions that were under maintenance, in general it is a beautiful and nice museum to learn many things about our beautiful nature.

Great museum!! Many things for you to see and learn. I liked the planet part which I found it very informative. Some parts in the museum are closed due to Covid restrictions. You have to book in advance, and it’s free. I highly recommend the National Museum Cardiff to anyone looking for interesting things!
