180 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne VIC 3006, Australia, Northcote
Public gallery with vast, varied collection of noted Australian and international art and artefacts.
This is an awesome place to visit with the family. Lots of interesting exhibits. The Picasso Century exhibition was excellent. Great way to spend the day.
Amazing place !!!! You must go!!! The variety of the Arts around the globe. So so good. Recommend spending half day here. Love the cake as well.
Highly recommended! We saw the Picasso exhibition and it was a great collection. Having been to the Picasso museum in Barcelona and Paris there were works here that I’ve never seen before.
The beautiful paintings and art of Australian artists are really spectacular. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can get there easily by tram or train.
Nice place to visit for art lovers and it’s a great place to visit if you’re interested in learning about other cultures. The paintings were probably the best part of the entire gallery. It would be a useful visit for schools whose curriculums include asian studies.
Absolutely wonderful! I loved the garden and arts collection. Please do visit while you are in Melbourne. I do also recommend attending free guided tours at 11 am and 1 pm (if Im not mistaken.)
One of the coolest FREE art galleries I have ever been to. Huge fan of the giant red room of paintings. It was glorious. Really loved this place. The information desk gentleman was also so patient and competent. He suggested starting at the top floor with contemporary art and moving downstairs as things get more ancient. I was a huge fan of the queer artists feature they had at the top floor. There was an amazing dance video with shiny curtains and the whole choreography was played backwards symbolizing how regressive our society is. Although I do identify as queer, anyone can appreciate how empowering it is to bring to light the struggles and voices of queer artists. Anyways, my favorite floor was the European painting floor. THE SHEEP SURROUNDED BY CROWS. Brilliant. I love art.
We visited the National Gallery to see the Winter Exhibition, which didnt disappoint us.The Picasso 100 years gave us a great insight into the age of Cubism and Surrealism.Painters such as Dali, Tanning,Miro, Fernandez and of course Picasso began a new age of art interpretation.
Huge museum with lots to see. Free cloaking service at the entrance. Went for the Picasso exhibition. Simply amazing. There were some free exhibitions too on the upper floors. End up spending a good 3-4 hours here. The staff at the counter are really friendly and helpful.
Went to Picasso exhibition. I loved it. Many different Picassos along with other influences of the time. Not to expensive, well worth being able to get up close to painting and sketches
An excellent gallery to visit.Picasso Century exhibition is on going during winter 2022 in Melbourne. An opportunity not to be missed.Highly recommended for all visitors to Melbourne.
I hadnt been here since it was renovated years ago. And wow what a world class gallery we have in Melbourne. So much to see in the free section, I loved it and will definitely be back for the paid exhibitions in the future!
Ever changing kids exhibition thats interactive and loads of fun.Free exhibitions all year round and tickets exhibitions too.Great indoor (and freeactivity for the family
A world class gallery. Definitely Australia’s best with a very nicely curated collection that changes 2-4 times per year. Good interactive environment as well as holiday activities for kids and big kids to keep themselves occupied. Currently showing parts Pablo Picasso’s collection, including his works and his days compatriots and colleagues. Amazing
The museum is magnificent with a huge water wall as an entrance and very captivating architectural elements like a suspended glass roof and sculptures composed in the triple height foyer. The mezzanine floor had a nice food court and the floors above were catering to an exhibition space which was free for all. The area covered Asian, Japanese, Chinese and British exhibits and a Queer exhibit. The entire area was accessible via ramp, lift and escalator.Amazing place for an informational trip, like learning about designs created from notable architects and designers like Hoffmann, Le Corbusier, Rohe, Kem Weber, Perriard, Majorelle etc.A must visit place for all!!
I like it very much. The beautiful paintings and art of Australian artists are really spectacular. I enjoyed the environment very much. Highly recommended for those who like to get familiar with art of aboriginals and signs used in their crafts and paintings. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can get there easily by tram or train…enjoy it!
Amazing art gallery! We went and saw the Picasso exhibition. A lot of mind-blowing works of art. A limited number of people viewing the art at a time would of been better and there was a lack of signs around the gallery so it was not clear were to line up. But overall great experience!
I proudly joined as a member here after attending a show. The members lounge is cool, with an espresso coffee machine and areas to relax and delve into the arts. Well worth the price to join the NGV considering all the perks and you support the arts in Melbourne. You receive a complimentary tote, which you need to pick up from either St Kilda Rd or the Ian Potter Centre at Fed Square. The NGV exhibition I attended was excellently curated, what a treasure this gallery is. It was the Picasso show, I went with a good friend who organised the tickets. Could have spent all day in there. Take your family and friends in and absorb and immerse yourself in the history and culture! We didnt go to the café as there were too many people and no free tables but the shop was interesting. Surrounding scenery is beautiful also, being close to the Yarra River and in Southbank precinct.
Beautiful building and architecture. Epic free exhibitions and good to see the first people of this land and the art of their people. Just wandering through this place was a great adventure
NGV is awesome. I spent about 3 hours there and really didnt want to leave. Next week Ill be visiting again. The main exhibition (Picassorequires tickets, $30/person which I believe is good value. There are 2 X f & b outlets, a cafe and what appears to be a restaurant. I didnt ask but both were well supported with patrons. The shop and bookstore are popular also. There really is alot to see. Greeters on the ground floor are unrushed and helpful. They have an extensive knowledge of the Gallery and the exhibits and love to chat.
The kids and I walked around for 2 hours. Taking in the paintings and all the gallery had to offer. We had a great time. Highly recommended place to visit
A stately place where you definitely can learn history from a lot of artwork as evidence. You might hear something from some people, but it might be a Distortion of Thought! Seeing is believing. Just moving! Seeking what you wanna know!
As a tea drinker, I enjoyed walking around the gallery. There are many teawares from different countries & different eras.As a Korean, I found directories a bit confusing and disappointing. Before entering the Asian Collection, which is only written as Chinese Collection, Indian, South & South-East Asian Collection, and Japanese Collection, I thought there was nothing from Korea (East Asia). However, when I entered the room, there was an entire block of the Korean Collection...Also, I am not sure whether it was only on that day or if its been like that. The lights for Asian Collection were poorly done compared to the European Collection. The light works in the Asian Collection are killing the charm of whats exhibited, especially the moon jar, celadon, and baekja in the Korean Collection.Overall, its still a nice gallery to spend some time in. I recommend checking it out.
A great place to visit and really look at the exhibits. There is gore .there is humour .there is history. Dont rush take your time..make sure you wear comfy shoes.
Its always a delight to visit here, and it was one of the must-sees on my brief trip from London.I had forgotten the beautiful layout, particularly if you ride the escalators to the top floor-- then walk down, using the beautifully lit stairwells to each floor.I hadnt been a great fan of aboriginal art, but found the temporary exhibition of womens bark painting entrancing. Particularly the rooms of abstracted works and totemic poles, which radiated an unnamable mystery..The cafe and shop are always worth a visit, and the current Queer Art exhibition-- the overseas and local installations reminded me of the hidden and overt expression of gay experience throughout history. I laughed and cried.
Great museum. Free to enter. Both first and second levels are full of paintings , sculptures and other art pieces from Europe and Asia.Only a few minutes walking from city center and very close to the train station.Highly recommend it to anybody in Melbourne.Minimum time is 3 hours.
National Gallery Victoria is a very big gallery that have four floors with different kind of art items form around the world, also it is free entry, places that you should visit when you come to Melbourne
Everyone is welcome in this art museum place exhibits and collections. General entry is free. Some special exhibits have a cost. There’s a cloak room where you can leave your bag or umbrella. We went here for Gabrielle Chanel twentieth century fashion all in all experience was fun.👍🏽
I was there on a mission to see a particular Australian painting which the very nice fellow in the information booth said was in the wrong building. We had to leave the Swanston Street building to get to the Federation Square building and then could only find security guards to ask but they couldnt help. But theres a satisfactory ending to the story when a staff member knew absolutely everything about the painting and where it was. We found it and spent quite some time admiring Frederick McCubbins work. It was worth the search. Every painting 🖼 perfectly hung with lots of info.
We went there to enjoy our rainy Saturday and was amazed by the beauty of the place. Lovely place full of art work and nice cafés.I will definitely go back to check the space again.
Amazing time to spend amongst great artHave a cloakroom as well to leave your bags at the door.Hand sanitizer at Evey corner.Fun group activity and child friendly
I always enjoyed that place. Even just to meet friends and walk around the permanent exhibition. Recently I saw the Chanel exhibition and I think it was great!
Masterpiece design of victoria Gallery,Nice place for Kids, who could be inspired by regular Arts Tour SRO learn more about the world elsewhere.Always nice to buy some corresponding booklet afterwards for each art show in souvenir store.
Beautiful gallery that displays art work. Architecture is pretty and the ceilings are stunning. Staff too is helpful. An expansive, modern space to keep kids engaged. A must visit place if near Fed Square.Best part, entry is free but producing proof of vaccination is a must.
Beautiful Gallery with a stunning permanent collection.I particularly enjoyed the Yolŋu Bark Ladies exhibition. I loved Noŋgirrŋa Marawili’s bark paintings with the bright pink pigments. Will be back when I’m next in Melbourne.
The best museum in Victoria, it was amazing, I saw the Japanese shells painted with gold, I loved it. Also I was in the pink pool, is a great spot to take instagrammable pictures. Just enjoy!
Recently visited for the Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto exhibition. It was a very memorable experience, and gave me a lot of insights about her earliest work, life and overall artistic vision.
Great collection of arts, paintings and many more. One could spend hours and hours to read on the history. Gain lots of knowledge in this trip.
The national gallery of Victoria is one of Melbourne’s go to location for both locals and international visitors. There are multiple floors to visit and unwind in. Great place for people of all ages. Most exhibits are free although many of the paid exhibits are worth attending too. Would highly recommend doing some background reading on the pieces of art before coming here.
A Wonderful Magical Sunday in Melbourne. After a delicious brunch at Federation Square we headed off and visited the stunning Channel Exhibition at the NGV. Afterwards we checked out its beautiful rear Gardens And the quirky pink water splash pool. There was a cool bar & Funky Music filled the air. It had a great festive vibe. It was great to see Melbourne fizzing
Beautiful, clean place. Lots of staff around. Great place for all ages to explore. Kids loved the Pink Pond[er] Pool, an immersive art installation, reflective of Australia’s pink salt lakes.Entry is FREE. Bring a towel. Open to all ages. There are tables and chairs to sit. Theres also a small play area for children. Lots of shade.NGV, St KildaGround Level, Grollo Equiset Garden
We went to the museum because we wanted to enjoy our night outside. The place was nice we couldn’t imagine we were at the museum. They made good use of the outdoor space by offering a small pink “swimming pool” with a sculpture in the center. Everyone, old and young, was in the pool to cool off.The atmosphere was very nice. You can order drink or food but they aren’t cheap. You can go for the aperitive with your friends , sit on the garden and enjoy the place and the music. The DJ is at the entrance of the museum but you can listen to his music in the garden because there are the speakers.
Went to see the Chanel Exhibition. An awesome display of Cocos fashion can be viewed here along with her life story.Truly worthwhile.Did not attend the main gallery on this occasion. Also tried the gallery cafe. Coffee was fine. Food was a bit overpriced as these places often are. Quality was good. All round an excellent experience.
We went in expecting it to be your usual museum with vast galleries and paintings but it is very big and has 3-4 floors filled with exhibitions, art, modern and contemporary exhibits. You could easily spend 3-4 hours here and possibly more if you like their exhibits. When we were there, 3 floors of the exhibitions were free and there was a special floor for channel which requires admission fee.
A fantastic place to take shelter & step into other worlds & other times. The outdoor area at the rear was packed with happy kids splashing around in the pink water on a summer’s day.We meandered through the galleries, from first century pottery to British & European works & then mid century to modern works.
A stunning building with well-curated art exhibits. Many are free, and a couple have entry fees. Worth a visit!
Melbourne’s another Just Wow! Experience Wouldnt want any of a better experience. Great service wonderful artwork and the culture in this place is very strong. Great place to explore the 3 levels in the Gallery and amazing place for a day out with the fam. If you want to be able to see everything it isnt a 5 minute job so make sure you have plenty of time to come here. But would not expect nothing more. Its got a nice food place on the ground floor prices are average but still isnt cheap like some places. Got some great Photos while I was there. Most recommended
Relaxing Sunday afternoon wandering through the collections. Great atmosphere, well designed - even the transition between different floors was smooth. So good its free entry, bags can be left at the cloakroom. Spent about 2 hours exploring and still have more to see for a future visit.
National Gallery of Victoria (NGVis the oldest and most visited art gallery in Australia. It has lots famous art work from International artists like Picasso, Monet etcThey have a massive collection spread over 3 floors can keep you engaged for few hours. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the city.
I love this place! The permanent collections are great and get changed up, so definitely worth a visit if you are on the city. The absolute highlight are the exhibitions which I recommend you visit if the subject matter appeals. Tickets are only around $30/ person and they are phenomenal!! Large but well spaced, all exhibits explained with background and its the famous works. Depending on your appetite to go in depth and enjoy the displays, its easily a great 2 to 3 hours
