Nice place to visit for art lovers and it’s a great place to visit if you’re interested in learning about other cultures. The paintings were probably the best part of the entire gallery. It would be a useful visit for schools whose curriculums include asian studies.

One of the coolest FREE art galleries I have ever been to. Huge fan of the giant red room of paintings. It was glorious. Really loved this place. The information desk gentleman was also so patient and competent. He suggested starting at the top floor with contemporary art and moving downstairs as things get more ancient. I was a huge fan of the queer artists feature they had at the top floor. There was an amazing dance video with shiny curtains and the whole choreography was played backwards symbolizing how regressive our society is. Although I do identify as queer, anyone can appreciate how empowering it is to bring to light the struggles and voices of queer artists. Anyways, my favorite floor was the European painting floor. THE SHEEP SURROUNDED BY CROWS. Brilliant. I love art.

We visited the National Gallery to see the Winter Exhibition, which didnt disappoint us.The Picasso 100 years gave us a great insight into the age of Cubism and Surrealism.Painters such as Dali, Tanning,Miro, Fernandez and of course Picasso began a new age of art interpretation.

A world class gallery. Definitely Australia’s best with a very nicely curated collection that changes 2-4 times per year. Good interactive environment as well as holiday activities for kids and big kids to keep themselves occupied. Currently showing parts Pablo Picasso’s collection, including his works and his days compatriots and colleagues. Amazing

The museum is magnificent with a huge water wall as an entrance and very captivating architectural elements like a suspended glass roof and sculptures composed in the triple height foyer. The mezzanine floor had a nice food court and the floors above were catering to an exhibition space which was free for all. The area covered Asian, Japanese, Chinese and British exhibits and a Queer exhibit. The entire area was accessible via ramp, lift and escalator.Amazing place for an informational trip, like learning about designs created from notable architects and designers like Hoffmann, Le Corbusier, Rohe, Kem Weber, Perriard, Majorelle etc.A must visit place for all!!

Amazing art gallery! We went and saw the Picasso exhibition. A lot of mind-blowing works of art. A limited number of people viewing the art at a time would of been better and there was a lack of signs around the gallery so it was not clear were to line up. But overall great experience!

I proudly joined as a member here after attending a show. The members lounge is cool, with an espresso coffee machine and areas to relax and delve into the arts. Well worth the price to join the NGV considering all the perks and you support the arts in Melbourne. You receive a complimentary tote, which you need to pick up from either St Kilda Rd or the Ian Potter Centre at Fed Square. The NGV exhibition I attended was excellently curated, what a treasure this gallery is. It was the Picasso show, I went with a good friend who organised the tickets. Could have spent all day in there. Take your family and friends in and absorb and immerse yourself in the history and culture! We didnt go to the café as there were too many people and no free tables but the shop was interesting. Surrounding scenery is beautiful also, being close to the Yarra River and in Southbank precinct.

NGV is awesome. I spent about 3 hours there and really didnt want to leave. Next week Ill be visiting again. The main exhibition (Picassorequires tickets, $30/person which I believe is good value. There are 2 X f & b outlets, a cafe and what appears to be a restaurant. I didnt ask but both were well supported with patrons. The shop and bookstore are popular also. There really is alot to see. Greeters on the ground floor are unrushed and helpful. They have an extensive knowledge of the Gallery and the exhibits and love to chat.

As a tea drinker, I enjoyed walking around the gallery. There are many teawares from different countries & different eras.As a Korean, I found directories a bit confusing and disappointing. Before entering the Asian Collection, which is only written as Chinese Collection, Indian, South & South-East Asian Collection, and Japanese Collection, I thought there was nothing from Korea (East Asia). However, when I entered the room, there was an entire block of the Korean Collection...Also, I am not sure whether it was only on that day or if its been like that. The lights for Asian Collection were poorly done compared to the European Collection. The light works in the Asian Collection are killing the charm of whats exhibited, especially the moon jar, celadon, and baekja in the Korean Collection.Overall, its still a nice gallery to spend some time in. I recommend checking it out.

Its always a delight to visit here, and it was one of the must-sees on my brief trip from London.I had forgotten the beautiful layout, particularly if you ride the escalators to the top floor-- then walk down, using the beautifully lit stairwells to each floor.I hadnt been a great fan of aboriginal art, but found the temporary exhibition of womens bark painting entrancing. Particularly the rooms of abstracted works and totemic poles, which radiated an unnamable mystery..The cafe and shop are always worth a visit, and the current Queer Art exhibition-- the overseas and local installations reminded me of the hidden and overt expression of gay experience throughout history. I laughed and cried.

I was there on a mission to see a particular Australian painting which the very nice fellow in the information booth said was in the wrong building. We had to leave the Swanston Street building to get to the Federation Square building and then could only find security guards to ask but they couldnt help. But theres a satisfactory ending to the story when a staff member knew absolutely everything about the painting and where it was. We found it and spent quite some time admiring Frederick McCubbins work. It was worth the search. Every painting 🖼 perfectly hung with lots of info.

We went to the museum because we wanted to enjoy our night outside. The place was nice we couldn’t imagine we were at the museum. They made good use of the outdoor space by offering a small pink “swimming pool” with a sculpture in the center. Everyone, old and young, was in the pool to cool off.The atmosphere was very nice. You can order drink or food but they aren’t cheap. You can go for the aperitive with your friends , sit on the garden and enjoy the place and the music. The DJ is at the entrance of the museum but you can listen to his music in the garden because there are the speakers.

Went to see the Chanel Exhibition. An awesome display of Cocos fashion can be viewed here along with her life story.Truly worthwhile.Did not attend the main gallery on this occasion. Also tried the gallery cafe. Coffee was fine. Food was a bit overpriced as these places often are. Quality was good. All round an excellent experience.

We went in expecting it to be your usual museum with vast galleries and paintings but it is very big and has 3-4 floors filled with exhibitions, art, modern and contemporary exhibits. You could easily spend 3-4 hours here and possibly more if you like their exhibits. When we were there, 3 floors of the exhibitions were free and there was a special floor for channel which requires admission fee.

Great place to explore the 3 levels in the Gallery and amazing place for a day out with the fam. If you want to be able to see everything it isnt a 5 minute job so make sure you have plenty of time to come here. But would not expect nothing more. Its got a nice food place on the ground floor prices are average but still isnt cheap like some places. Got some great Photos while I was there. Most recommended

I love this place! The permanent collections are great and get changed up, so definitely worth a visit if you are on the city. The absolute highlight are the exhibitions which I recommend you visit if the subject matter appeals. Tickets are only around $30/ person and they are phenomenal!! Large but well spaced, all exhibits explained with background and its the famous works. Depending on your appetite to go in depth and enjoy the displays, its easily a great 2 to 3 hours
