National Gallery of Jamaica in Kingston
Description
Very good spectacle of Jamaican art
A peek into Jamaicas culture and talent. They feature new art collections every few months so once is never enough.Do go see.
MoreThe tour was very informative. Nice, clean gallery.
Its worth a visit with some interesting exhibits but the gallery falls short with poor text/interpretation that supports the work on show. I recommend they spend more time on developing information for visitors about the works and artists. Improve text labels and give the walls some tlc to show of the best of Jamaican art. The historical gallery is in need of a signficant re-think it presents colonial Jamaica and especially the period under slavery with absolutely no interpretation or context about its legacy. I would of thought it would be the leading centre of slavery history and material culture on the island. There is so much information about almost all the works in the historical gallery which would create a fascinating exhibition and help people to learn, debate and reflect on Jamaicas past.
MoreI enjoyed my experience at this gallery. I love learning about the arts and history!
MoreGreat experience,Good information, excellent art!
One of my favourite places to visit
Went to the Kingston Biennial ! It was lovely. Definitely a most see!
Small, but excellent collection. One of the best I haver seen in Latin America.
Visited the National Gallery after two years of being MIA because of COVID. The gallery holds a special place for me and as a patron I was proud to see the selection of young and recurring artists. From sculpture & installation, to painting to photography & film and mixed media to textiles, the Pressure, exhibition forces us to think.I am however particularly perturbed by the gallery’s position to only allow invited guests for this instalment of the Biennial. Although I am proud of the young artists being represented, I don’t think this 2022 exhibition was that intersectional… especially in terms of who is being seen on the walls.
MoreIts currently being renovated as such, you dont have as much access & due to Covid19 Protocols, you no longer get guided tours, besides all that, the exhibits are great to look at
MoreThe Jamaica Jamaica exhibition experience is worth it! Interesting to see the development of Jamaican music over the decades
MoreA modest art gallery with a focus on Jamaican artists. Spent over an hour touring their permanent exhibit on the upper floor, unfortunately their temporary exhibit was under renovation while we were there. The price to enter was fair and they have a small gift shop and café.
MoreVisiting here is like going back in time, reliving historical memories and events. If you should ever make it to Kingston, ensure to make a stop here, and bring your camera as well. Very welcoming staffs, excellent hostess and a welcoming atmosphere.
MoreThe new Jamaica Exhibition is a must see, its so exciting, it really takes you back in history and highlights great contributions that uplifted Jamaican music. Overall lots of (he)art and history to see
MoreThe National Gallery is a must visit if you want to dig beneath the surface to uncover Jamaicas art, roots, history and culture. The exhibits are always phenomenal and I never leave without learning or experiencing something new.
MoreIts not just an art exhibition but its a peep inside a peoples history from a colonial past to the resilience built and the courage that led to using talent as a medium and language of protest and release.
MoreTake your entire family here. Lovely place bearing a vast collection of historic Jamaican paintings and sculptures. The pieces are properly placed and the gallery is very clean. Most of the pieces are displayed upstairs though so for persons who are not able to walk, that will be a challenge, but otherwise, every art lover must visit this place.
MoreThis was my second visit and it was as good as the first. Another great experience I am recommending to everyone as much is depicted through the various pieces of work on display at any given time. There are pieces for everyone to appreciate.
MoreIt was pretty good. Its deceptively larger than it looks when you first walk in. I think theres an opportunity to install art outside and around the building that makes it more of a destination and opportunity to take pictures. A permanent exhibit on the history of Jamaican art, including the original peoples would be interesting as well.
MoreRich history and thought provoking pieces of art on display. A must visit for all Jamaicans and visitors who love and want to learn more about Jamaican culture.
MoreConstantly evolving and impressive collection with a balance of Jamaican classics and contemporaries. Very kind and attentive staff. Belisario is a must see.
MoreA beautiful gallery giving you a sampling of Jamaicas great artistic wealth. A must see when you visit Kingston, the capital of Jamaica.
MoreOne of my favourite places in Jamaica for my spot of visual and performing art, especially on Last Sundays.Love the new exhibition
MoreThe national gallery is a lovely place. We should really visit the exhibits more often. There are some beautiful pieces in the collection.
MoreA relaxing comfortable atmosphere, a recommended visit for art lovers of whatever level of sophistication. They frequently have exhibitions and showcase different local and regional artists from different disciplines. Great for families or solo visits. There is an attached Cafe for snacks and refreshment as well as a boutique gift shop. A recommended visit.
MoreGreat place of culture and learning. Also optimum for entertainment. Check the Last Sundays held the last Sunday of each month. Free for all to enter
MoreLast Sundays are great. Drew admission.
An exquisite exhibition of authentic Jamaican 🇯🇲 art 🖼 They have different exhibitions, for various times of the year. The ambiance is great and the gallery is very spacious. Students and senior citizens with ID enter free otherwise, there’s a $400 JMD entry fee. They have art pieces at an affordable cost as well as handmade jewelry.
MoreThe gallery was an awesome experience. I went back in history with the Taino, Spanish & British displays. The current Reggae Month art exhibition from around the world was very impressive. The different styles and representations of reggae made me feel very proud to be citizen by birth of Jamaica.
MoreWent randomly and found a random reggae exposition. A great deal of designs for reggae from all over the world.
MoreI was quite surprised at the fact that there ware such beautiful exhibits at this very nondescript building close to the waterfront in Kingston. We had some trouble finding the building, initially, but everyone we asked for directions was very friendly, and provided us with directions which got us a little closer each time. The gift shop had a nice selection of art, including fiber arts, books, postcards, and jewelry created by local artists, many of which were reasonably priced.
MoreA lot of history and art is their taking my children too, the next visit
Exquite art. Loved the Edna Manle section
Its a breathtaking place to look at all types of wonderful art.
Persons working nearby can enter and not worried about cost. The representatives are courteous and professional, a refreshing experience. Inside is nicely kept and the tour guides make your visit worth the effort
MoreNestled in the heart of downtown is a prized building housing our nations largest collection of various art forms including paintings, sculptures and carvings. To behold is to be left amazed even breathless. Your visit will include guided tours, lectures, panel discussions and children art programmes. Please visit and take the family along, you will be happy you did.
MoreWonderful arts u must come and see them.
I loved it here, such a beautiful place with all those incredible artwork of the talented local artist. It is so worth spending a day in the gallery full of so much history and culture. Loved it.
MoreAs the largest art gallery in the Anglophone Caribbean, the National Gallery doesnt disappoint. It boasts 4 permanent galleries and usually an additional temporary exhibit showcasing the talent and richness of the Jamaican art scene from 1000AD to present. Admission is JA$400, except on their Last Sundays special programming held on the last Sunday of every month which is free. Paid parking is available adjacent to the gallery. Definitely worth several visits!
MoreIts exactly as the title says - the curators do a great job of showing all varying levels of art in Jamaica from modern photography to Taino carvings. Very engaging and informative tours available. Appreciate the research and display that is put into each collection. Another feature is their Last Sunday Show which adds the element of Performing Arts where a live show is held.
MoreA cool breath of fresh air in the middle of dilapidated Kingston. Well put together with professional staff. Always love the Edna Manley sculptures. Now has a nice gift shop and small cafe.
MoreIt is amazing, all different types of art with a little history. The price is also very reasonable.
MoreThe experience was very good. There is so much things to learn just looking at the art.
MoreI am not really an art person. But I generally visit on a quiet Sunday afternoon just to view the exhibits. Its always very clean and the workers are quite pleasant.
MoreI cannot begin to talk about how impressed I was with this gallery. The art work was thought provoking and the curator does a fine job of selecting and presenting the art work. I was there for an hour and I felt like I needed more time to absorb the artwork. If you are an art or history lover, please stop on in! Entry fee was very reasonable too.
MoreIn Downtown Kingston youll find the national gallery, home to many unique artistic works by local & intl artists. The venue is quite big so set aside at least 2 hours if youd really like to walk through & see everything.
MoreTour of the gallery gives you a great snapshot of Jamaican culture through the decades to present. The Biennial is a must see and after can stop by the gift store for some great coffee & sandwiches.
MoreWide variety of artwork and other presentations
Personally I love going to the Gallery. My cousin has had several exhibitions there but the historical significance is why I return. Kingston is a wonderful city
