Large theater with comfortable seats showcasing traditional Japanese performances.
All the staff is very friendly and helpful. It is medium-sized and comfortable. You have to pay for earphones, but you can use a SUICA.I was in the second row from the front this time but had some trouble reading the subtitles above, so I think rows 5 and 6 are better.

Traditional Japanese puppetry is exquisite. The late July/early August program always includes a show meant to entertain children and families (usually the first show, which starts at 11:00 AM). This last it included the old folk tale, "The Tongue-Cut Sparrow." The play featured puppeteers operating the large sparrow puppets descending by wire from above the stage. This year (2022was ""The Sound of the Bell"--a clever story about a kappa (legendary water creatureand two foxes, and another play about an enchanted girl and her dealings with an evil being. The National Bunraku Theater performs about five programs a year, each running for about three weeks, so, for a visitor to Japan, it is quite likely that there will happen to be nothing showing. For those who dont want to miss a puppet theater performance, a trip to Tokushima (on the island of Shikoku, but only two-and-a-half hours away by scenic and comfortable express buswill allow you to see a puppet performance any day of the year (two shows daily, 11:00 AM and 2:00 PMat Awa Jurobe Yashiki Puppet Theater and Museum. Buses leave from Namba and Umeda in Osaka. Or you may also see puppet theater at Awaji Puppet Theater on Awaji Island every day except Wednesdays. Comfortable buses (about two hoursleave from Sannomiya in Kobe.See Bunraku in Osaka if possible, but the trip to Tokushima is worth it (with many other things to do and see there if you go). The trip to either Tokushima or Awaji Island takes you across the longest suspension bridge in the world, the Akashi Bridge.
A big space, theater, that usually held cultural performance, such as traditional music, performance, also plays.
Specific theatre👹👺of Osaka
Nice athmosphere, interesting plays. Has bigger and smaller halls to see plays. Liked it. If you want to learn Japanese culture, you should definately see Japanese cultural dancing and singing.
no so good
I attended the National Bunraku theatre to see a Bunraku (puppetry performance). Three puppeteers work in unison to make the puppets come alive and a narrator accompanied by a samisen player narrates the story. Absolutely masterful. Highly recommended. Headsets in English are available with a refundable deposit.
If you enjoy Japanese traditional arts, you will enjoy watching a performance at the National Bunraku Thrater. Check online for performance dates, and become familiar with the performance subject. Large theatre, main lobby same generally as most better theaters, tickets, coat check, gift and performance shoppe, gallery, tea and dessert, etc. 2nd floor are toilets, rest and social area between performances. Theatre is located in a central location of Osaka, close to main train lines, with food, drinks, and stores in immediate vicinity. A great Japanese theatre experience.
A wonderful performance with explanation of the many aspects of the traditional art of Bunraku. Be sure to ask for audio translation and also check out the exhibit hall which offers a great deal of useful information.
I really enjoyed this Bunraku experience but the show is very long and not always available with an English audio guide. I purchased tickets for the 2nd act (there were 2 that day30 min before show time and about half the auditorium was available. I sat in the seventh row amongst the locals and did not experience any segregation or treatment as a foreigner as a recent post suggested. I was given a brief one page synopsis of the story but was warned that there would be no English subtitles for me to follow along with the dialogue, considering that this was a rare opportunity to experience this unique art form I still decided to attend. The show started at 2pm, after 20 min there was an intro to Bunraku experience in which a narrator introduced the roles of the singer, shamisen player and of course the puppeteers. There was a 10 min intermission and then about a 75 min continuation of the show. Not understanding the language can be taxing on your patience after a while, I even saw some Japanese people doze off next to me well into the show. I would have opted for the single act tickets if they were available as 15-20 min is really all you need to witness and appreciate the artistry. But I’m still glad I was able to experience Bunraku at the national theatre even though it was a little long and would recommend it to anyone interested in this very Japanese experience.
We had such a wonderful time watching the Bunraku show and learning about the theatre. The English guidance was really great too.
Worth a visit even if you don’t watch a show! Free small and informative exhibit about Bunraku (Japanese Puppet Theatre essentially), I didn’t catch any show but it was still fascinating to read about every aspect of putting the show together. There’s also free wifi, a toilet and nice seats if you want to make it a pit stop.
Amazing Japanese experience!Don’t forget to get the audio guide in English before you go in!I believe Korean, Chinese and Japanese* audio guides are available and some flyers with info are available also in French.*They have audio guides in Japanese because during the play the storyteller is speaking an old Japanese that is not completely understood even by local people.
Like other Japanese places, a very nice, clean place with efficient and helpful, tho with difficulty in English, staffs.I enjoy my time there.
Looking forward to theatre as I was going to Japan. What i can say, the play was very serious and long. Mine was the last play for the day, almost 2 hours plus with only ¥2,000. Love the place and mini museum. The only downside is the audit guide only provided the narratiob and content of the performance. If they able to provide word by word translation will be great.
Unique experience of Japan culture. Must have!
I didnt see a show but the museum part is interesting and free to view
A must go in Osaka!
Awsome show!
Ive seen about a dozen shows here (some bunraku, some gagaku and one kabuki performanceand all of them were topnotch.
Absolutely a must do in Osaka. We saw the 11.00 show and it was a fantastic experience. The puppetry and music are outstanding. Definitely get the English headphones for narration, they also include general details and history of bunraku.
Bello
It was a lot of fun but can be frustrating to get tickets. You have to be there to buy them and they seem to sell out quickly even on slow days. Id also strongly recommend getting a translator if you dont speak Japanese.
Japanese culture is brought to life in theatres like these. Puppets play out stories that were written by the best in Japan. The plays are long and serious and wonderful. The foyer has many little shops from where you can purchase Bento boxs to eat in the intervals of long plays. An essential experience for those wanting to dive into Japanese culture.
What a theatre! Staff is friendly and the shows are amazing. As a tourist Ive been to one of the final Bunraku acts, which was quite the experience. Definitely recommended for tourists in Osaka!
good
An audiovisual treat and a uniquely Japanese art form
Nice place~!
most exiciting experience
A nice experience if you appreciate traditional performing arts. The plays are pretty long, but there are tickets for small parts too.Audio-guides available in English. Very worthy since there is a lot of speaking. Funny to see all those old people wearing nice clothes and ready for a night at the theater and then many of the families sleeping during the performance.Dont forget to step by the small museum before the play so you can see how the marionettes are made and controlled!
I had no idea what was going on, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and one I would recommend for anybody travelling through. We just did the one act, which was more than enough time to enjoy it.
Amazing place, a living tradition. Highly recommended
I fiercely did not want to go for this, but my girlfriend did. I felt very apprehensive as we dont understand Japanese and I felt it would be a waste of our holiday time. It however turned out to be well worth our time and money. The amount of passion that the performers put into this is just unlike anything Ive ever seen. I didnt love the story much, but the art and passion put into this performance is simply stunning.
What a place and what an experience!! Enjoyed the elegant and meticulous performance of this traditional puppet art. All of the performance was in Japanese and it grows on you. Ushers brought us a. English translation of the story which made it more enjoyable. Our friends also helped us with a synopsis. The experience was unforgettable.
Beautiful venue, extraordinarily talented artists - both on and off stage. Their Discover Bunraku program for newbies to the theatre practice is well worth the few dollars they charge.
Japanese puppeteer has a long and illustrious history, the Osaka Bunraku Theatre is a world class experience, be sure to look up showtimes because some days they are closed.
cool osaka,cool japan
the performances are super long, so bring stamina.
