AL, Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, Tiranë 1001, Albania, Lushnje
National art museum displaying works by Albanian & international artists in a contemporary space.
Under construction. May be in 5 years.
Currently being renovated and you cannot enter. Nor can you see the Stalin and Lenin statues. Theyve been moved somewhere.
Trying to find the way to get in because of construction outside we face a security guard a very unprofessional guard that start screaming “ It’s close it’s close don’t you see that is close. We try to explain to him that there is not any sign to show it there is not any damn sign all around building but he kept saying loud very loud ITS CLOSE ITS CLOSE DONT YOU SEE IT …. This story happen on March 30/3022 10.30am. Now after reading all reviews here I think whoever is in charge of this Art Gallery has to step down because is shame, even hundreds time maybe thousands time this Gallery is nail for lock of displaying the art still is the same situation, shame shame shame….
Si bad closing it, we couldn’t visit it in winter 2021- 2022.
The gallery is nice but now is closed for some renovation works and the facade and the yard are in terrible conditions due to the lack of maintenance. It is a pity that it has degradated in this way.
The place is closed for renovations for two years, I was walking around for 10 min trying to find the entrance, no one bothered to tell us until we asked, the least they could do it simply update the status on Google Maps!
Great gallery. Really helpful staff, who were willing to show us around and discuss the sculptures and paintings.
Great variety of Albanian paintings and sculptures during recent history.
Havent go in, as it was out of the working hours, but the place looks nice and the statues outside are nice Idea.
I didn’t vist it however my family did. They like it.The price is reasonable and very cheap for students
Nice place, not the best art this time round, but maybe that’s just me
REALLY VERY VERY APPRICIATABLE WORK.PHOTOS ARE ALLOWED BUT VIDEOS NOT.WORTH VISIT THE GALLERY.AMAZING ART TO SEE AND FEEL THE HISTORY .
Most of the paintings were covered and there was no information about the paintings just look and leave
This could be highly interesting for anyone that would like to know more both about albanian arts before and after communism, but they simply lack the knowledge how to manage a good exhibition. It is way too warm and humid inside for all the paintings and the sheer mass of pieces needs at least a bit of explanation for visitors.Since it is no museum, but a kind of open archive, we didnt expect detailed information on every piece of art, but an information desk every now and then would help any person that is not studying albanian art history. Conclusion: too many pieces of art, not stored properly and no sufficient information for the visitors.Hope this helps for further improvement, the pieces of art are awesome and theres so much to learn about it.
What I could see was nice, but half of pictures were seeked and nobody had informed me about it.
Generally worth to see, but i was hoping to see some different exhibitions but there were only like paintings about war, which were mostly the same. Still it is better to see than pass it.
Very very interesting exhibition about albanien paint art of various centuries. Most from communist times. Nice building too. Entrance fee 200 Leki. Highly recommended.
Lots of sculptures and portraits. There are some interesting works. One staff in there kept following us wherever we go, in a way that it feels like she is monitoring us, make us felt very uncomfortable.
I wasnt blown away but I enjoyed nonetheless. Some paintings were covered but most were viewable.
Very good museum to learn about art during the communist era. Many paintings and sculptures on display however the museum is undergoing some needed repairs and some of the paintings on the upper floor are covered. I still would recommend if you want to spend a couple hours.Loses one star for the state of the building and the lack of information on the pieces exhibited.
I absolutely loved and enjoyed my tour here. Everything is archived very well and good english speaking staff is willingly helping you and gives you a description for everything very well.Besides the national heritage and historical paintings and sculptures from the communist era, youll have here two contemporary art galleries.. the one I was inside was about rhe quick development of Tirana, urbanizing projects and on which costs and risks the labours are working. An interesting point of view, mostly not seen from anyone. Despite heavy injuries and low payments and bad sometimes without insurance at all the labours are still working.Ive posted here some of my favorite paintings and sculptures from the gallery.
Ok theyve covered up many of the paintings which is certainly unusual, but after spending some time I gradually came to like the idea. The covers are slightly see through so you get a teasing view of whats below and they periodically change what is on show and have grand unveilings with a talk, so maybe it all adds excitement. The building itself is beautiful and worth visiting for that alone (though at the moment there are many cracks from the Nov 2019 earthquake). So for the incredibly reasonable entry fee Id say it is a must see.
Very clean and well maintained.
Thats a nice modern art museum which hosts a permanent exhibition with paintings mainly from the socialist era but has temporary contemporary exhibitions.when visited most paintings where covered with a low transparency cloth as a part of temporary exhibition which was an ok idea. But I liked to see also the socialist paintings (Ive seen a part of them in athens documenta and wanted to see the full collection).the "cloud" sculpture in front is very nicethe building need a renovation the walls are cracking
Would you visit an art museum where almost all the art are covered-up? What you see on the exterior of this museum now is what youll see on the inside as well! The reception tried to justify it by calling it "modern art." I call it total BS! Forget about wasting your money, dont even waste a minute of your time here. Its the WORST excuse of a museum, EVER!
7/8ths of the paintings are covered. Apparently theres a new curator who thought it would be a great idea to cover all the paintings so you cant actually see them. The way the woman selling tickets said it, its clear there ha e been a lot of complaints. Maybe this is fine if you live here and can visit regularly enough to catch them all uncovered at some point, but as a visitor, its pretty frustrating, and doesnt seem to honor the paintings and artists. Though it was just about $5 for two adults and a senior citizen, I dont think its worth visiting until the paintings are all uncovered.
Unfortunately on the 11/12/19 the Gallery was closed. However, no informative notice explaining this. Luckily, I met a lady at the library that told me that indeed, the gallery was closed and that she didnt know when it will be reopened. It could take one, two weeks or even more. Anyways, it would have been appreciated to know this before hand.
Unfortunately, just the first floor with the little exhibition was open because the were doing repairs on the second
National Art Gallery is a collection of Albanian art covering a wide range of styles, tastes and historical periods.
Some truly awful Communist era propaganda art. Interesting politically, artistically terrible.
Im very fond of this type of museum. Not particularly because of the quality of the paintings but because of the importance to save these relics of the past for future generations. The historical theme tableaux and the socialist realism never cease to amaze me. Recommended if you want to scratch the surface of Albanias history. Some of the most stunning artwork Ive seen up close, particularly from Kilica, Ceka and Hila. And only a few bucks to enter!
Temporary exhibition was cool but the permanent stuff was pretty samey
Great place to explore art from the Communist period. Staff is very professional and polite. Be sure not to miss the modern construction in front of it. Price of admittance is 200 leke
20th century propaganda art. Apparently Albania has no art before 1929.
A fascinating look at Albanian art from the Enver Hoxha period. Some of the paintings were more vivid and vibrant than I expected, though clearly all of them were the product of artists working fervently to stay within the good graces of the regime. Looking at these paintings made me wonder about their struggles. One particular painting presents Enver Hoxha as a god-like figure being looked up to by every segment of society. You could easily substitute for Hoxhas face the face of Stalin or Mao . . . or Kim Jong-un. That painting would have served their respective personality cults just as well. Seeing such a thing up close was kind of bizarre. Not all of the art was of the so-called "socialist realism" variety. There was also a floor showing some abstract and conceptual works, mostly from the late 80s. By then Hoxha was dead, but his regime was still in power, so Im guessing these were works done privately and kept private, but Im not certain about that, and there was no written info about them.Be sure to check out the statues behind the building. They look rather forlorn, but interesting.
Beautifully arranged gallery of historically significant art.
The best communist-era art Ive seen in the Balkans. Nicely displayed but could use -any- descriptions like most galleries have next to the art but I guess they lost it werent supposed to credit any specific person since all work was for the greater good of the future of society at large.
At the moment, only socialist-realistic paintings. With confident, musculine workers and engeneer woman. For that, its nice...
Interesting art from Albanias communist era, but little to no information in English. Would be 5 stars if the app worked or there was a little write of for the paintings. Has great potential and is worth a visit regardless.
Was there for the Edi Hila exhibition. The cloud was still in front of the gallery. On the second floor there is an good collection art/propaganda from the communist era. Worth a visit.
Exhibition of Edi Hila wasnt bad. Albanian art isnt only composed of communist art. They have more than that but you cant see anytgh else in the gallery.
Great place filled with paintings. The grat thing is in there you can find the original painting of “MOTRA TONE “ painted by Kol Idromeno witch is stated as the albanian Mona Lisa
What a gem! This is a wonderful museum with very interesting and beautiful work. No abstract paintings, just realistic paintings of the history of Albania. Some propaganda and some depictions of normal Albanian life. I did not know any of the artists, but they can surely measure with international painters from the same period 1880-1970. It was very quiet in the museum. The entrance does not look to be open and the doors have mirrors, not very welcoming. But behind the doors is an unexpected wealth of nice art pieces.
One of the biggest art gallery in Albania.
No photos are allowed. Its a nice gallery however its not air conditioned.
Nice selection of classic art and the temporary exhibit was really cool. However, there is little to no context or descriptions available in English - There is a free app that is advertised to guide you through certain pieces, but the wifi doesnt work in the gallery. Also, the staff wasnt particularly helpful: The bathrooms werent working(?in the gallery and no suggestions were offered on where else might be available, they chatted rather loudly as we wandered the exhibits.
Check the socialism-realism art painting very attractive and unique
Love it! Just wish the opening hours werent so random and constantly changing! Worth going round the back to see the giant communist era statues literally stored outside!
Had some interestingly stereotypical communist art which shows Albanias history but would have liked have seen some modern curation too
The National Gallery preserves and conserves over 5000 artworks. Besides the permanent collection which is focused on Socialist Realism art, famous Albanian artists, international ones and important collections have been part of the different exhibitions in the NGA
