Stately Guatemalan history & culture museum, with educational displays & Mayan artifacts.
One of the most beautiful museums I visited. All the things you want to find around Maya Culture
Currently closed seemingly
Is this museum open now April 2022?
Archeology museum is still closed as of February 6, 2022
Esta cerrado ...it is close!
Currently closed despite it written that its open from Thursday to Sunday on the door :( we tried twice for nothing
I stayed longer in the city just to find out the museum is closed for renovation?
Nice little museum with a chronological history of the Maya. Many well-preserved artifacts and stele. Ethnology section however is dull and skippable. Very expensive for foreigners (60Qbut worth it.
It was a beautiful representation of history and culture of Guatemala. I highly recommend visiting.
Must see before you go to Tikal
Has improved a lot. The initial exposition. But needs ramp for disability people.
Interesting, but no wifi, or English help. Staff didnt seem to care and it was pricey for foreigners.
Great place to start, before you go to Tikal.
Beautiful and informative. Worth a visit and the expense.
A small sized Meseum, for the history and extend of the Maya Civilisation one would expect more. The sections are very easy to navigate and there are descriptions in English.
An amazing museum of ancient Mayan sculptures, stones, pots, jewelry and typical regional Native clothes
Excellent museum with a lot of stuff to see, courtyard with impressive estelas, the best Ive seen so far. You can spend a couple of hours or a whole day there!Highly recommend it.
They need to put more effort into developing this museum. I feel like they were either underfunded or not interested in improving the museum. Entrance fee for foreigners is extremely expensive. The local folks only pay 5q, but foreigners pay 60q. The white LED lighting is more appropriate for a jewelry shop, but in the museum can make everything dull. Arrangement of artifacts is not in any organized way.
It recolets lots of antique pieces. Dont spect it to be Louvre but I recommend all visitors and locals to come and spend some time!
You gotta go see the Mayan stuff right there...OMG. AMAZING.You dont have to pay for parking and the tickets are inexpensive.
Very nice museum where you can learn quite a lot about the history of Guatemala , specifically the Mayan. Most of the information plaques read in English and Spanish.
I hate the fact that must of the Mayan stuff was taken to other countries its just unfair how they took what belong to us as a country and as part of our Guatemalan Cultur. The place is good but they shouldnt close for lunch time as they have a few staff members. The just toldeni have to leave today x )
This museum is meticulously maintained as is a gem in the crown of Guatemala City. You can spend 10 minutes or 10 days there. The cost is very modest and the employees are very, very helpful.SPECIAL NOTE: some of the fossils and pre-Colombian artifacts are very unique.
Museum was well laid out and had many interesting artifacts and displays. Because of my limited Spanish I did not get as much out of it as I could have. While there were quite a few english translations oddly enough newer displays seemed to be exclusively Spanish. A good english guidebook would be of great benefit.
Nice spot. I had the chance to visit the yearly "Juannio" exhibit and not the main museum exhibition, but still enjoyed it a lot.
Fascinating looking at history that stretches back as 4 Millennia
Great art exhibitions, and ecellent museum. It is a must in Guatemala
Take a step back in time and learn about Mayan and other cultural things.
This was the museum night in Guatemala they do it once a year I think and it’s free it is really ni e they gave music shows and you can buy food there it is a really nice place thank you
Amazing collection! Very nice for history!
Ive been to a few Maya museums and they are all different yet so interesting. You might think that seeing one is seeing all of them but this is not the case, again in this museum something new and exciting. I really liked the modeled depictions of the life of Mayas in different life aspects, there is a beautiful mural inside, beautiful textiles and I really liked the art by Mena which ads a beautiful freshness to the museum! Although some areas would need a better lightning, there is a beautiful outside area where you can see some exibits in natural light! Its a clean and a professional place. Keep in mind that the price for foreigners is 60 Q and for locals 5 Q.
Amazing Mayan artifacts. A brilliant culture. A must if you are traveling in the city
Great museum, with Mayan artefacts from multiple sites, primarily around Petén. You could easily spend half a day here, particularly if youve been to one or more of the sites in Petén. There are lots of artefacts from Tikal. Be warned that the museum closes at 1600.
Beyond awesome! I think I took a thousand photos and none do it justice. Too good to describe!
This a good place to know Guatemala and have a personal moment to read and learn.
Best thing we did in the city so far! Compared to the palace this is 10 times better and much more interesting . Nice mix of artefacts , just missing depth as no real explanation of individual pieces or context.most displays were bilingual too :)
I really enjoyed my time in this quiet museum. Many great artifacts from Guatemalan history. He museum has some fantastic exhibits and some awful exhibits, with no Spanish, never mind English information. Worth a visit after seeing the large pyramids and other Maya sites.
Imteresting but very small, youll be done in less than 1h30
This museum you can spend a great chunk of time. Amazing collection of Mayan artifacts as well as preconquest items. The museum is not wheelchair friendly due to buildings age. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Nice quiet museum. Please bring cash as they dont accept credit cards.
Go there to have a good context before visiting Tikal or other ruins.
This museum gives an account of the Mayans, possibly somewhat through the eyes of the Spanish. The sections are organized chronologically from the earliest days through today. If you are interested in Mayan history, this is certainly worth a stop. Do not be surprised if you notice an unevenness in the quality and presentation through the different areas, as some were prepared with the help of US universities, and some done locally. The best sections are almost Smithsonian quality, but others disappoint. It helps if you read Spanish, or have Google Translate handy. Many sections are bilingual, but some are not. We noticed none are in the native Mayan languages. Some displays are well documented, but others, such as the effigy of San Simon, are not.
Great artifacts and exhibits, although hard to see everything as most lights were off in the galleries. I loved the courtyard lined with carvings and stela.
3 museum in the same place is perfect to visitors enjoy and learned more about history
Different prices for locals & foreigners. Explanations of artefacts in Spanish & English. Lots of ceramics, great model of Tikhal. Whats missing is evidence of Maya Warfare & sacrificial practices which are topics that are popular. Nothing interactive, just look but dont touch.
Nice place to know a little bit more about Mayas.
Great museum on the Mayan (and earlierarchaeology of Guatemala. The exhibits are world class and arranged in chronological order. Most of the interpretative signage has an English translation in addition to the Spanish text. There are lots of small portable items dominated by ceramic vessels as well as jade artifacts and obsidian blades and blade cores. A wooden temple lintel from Tikal is present. The scaled model of Tikal is quite helpful for understanding the immense scale of that site. The museum’s open courtyard has Mayan stelae arranged around the outside edge. A number of the stelae are from major sites that remain largely inaccessible to tourists. They were brought to the museum for protection by the Institute of Anthropology and History (IDAEH). For example IDEAH retrieved 19 stelae from Naranjo in 1972-1973. This acquisition was fortuitous because Naranjo underwent systematic looting in the 1990s. Enjoyed seeing the reconstructed carved stone bench-like throne from Piedras Negras. The Guatemala National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is excellent and highly recommended. Whether your stay for an hour or all day this museum is a must see attraction in Guatemala City. One tip - we took a taxi back and forth between the hotel and museum.
This museum holds the most important collection of Modern Art in Guatemala.
Excellent museum, and all of the exhibits have detailed information (available in English and Spanish).
Beautiful Museum
