Greek archaeological site dating back to 7th century BC with acropolis, palace & tomb remains.
Beautiful ancient site! There are many informational signs to tell you more about the history of the site. The site is on a hill, so it provides a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. There is some shade on the site thanks to the olive trees. Theres a small museum, but its kind of hidden. You have to walk to the left a little after the entrance, but I recommend visiting if you have the time. It has artifacts that were found during the excavations of the site and give you insight on how the people lived here 3,500 years ago. This site is different from most ancient sites in Greece because its a lot older, most are from 500 BC or later, while this site is a thousand years older. You can tell by the different materials of the artifacts and different building styles. I also recommend walking to the shaft thombs that are right of the entrance, past the grave site. Make sure to go inside, the dome inside is of impressive size!
Truly a fascinating site and museum, charting the history of the Mycenaen capital and site. It is uphill as evidenced, but for the most part the path is uniform under foot.
An ancient location (one of the oldest in Greecewith excellent signage in Greek and English. Archaeology museum also had a small two story building stuffed with artifacts and replicas.
The site is a bit overrated in my opinion, it is beautiful but it has a very huge lake of information, the only sign we saw were just describing what we where seeing, literally.Only the museum had some interesting things to show us
An absolute must see for any history buff. I had seen this site in textbooks, but nothing prepares you for the real thing. Stunning, impressive and incredible to walk through. We went with a guide and had some free time as well.
The site has become hugely popular and naturally commercialised. The museumwas built in 2003 and desperately needs a renovation to get up to modern Greek standards. Decent lighting is needed. There are many free sites in the area which I was lucky to see through George and his dad at Klitimnistra Hotel. If you have time look at some of them
Popular tourist place. It was a little bit crowded, but there was enough space to park a car. The ticket costs 12eur. The ancient city remains worth visiting to feel the history. It will not take much time to walk around, but be prepared. Bring water and sun protection. Beaware, the paths are slippery. Some stones are slippery even in dry conditions. For the ticket price WC is terrible. Doors have no handles and locks - you have to hold the door with your foot to avoid a surprise visit while you are doing your stuff 🙂
Historical place, made extra special by the friendly cats youll find there!
Its truly said that this is one of Earths energy spots. So dont be surprised to feel.. strange. In general, the ruins of Mycenae civilization illustrate how strong, straight-forward and uncompromising these people were.
This is one of the oldest cultural and archeological sights in Europe, dating as far back as 3700 BCE. It is deeply tied to Greek mythology. It is said the city was founded by Perseus and a later king Agamemnon was the leader of the Greek armies in the war against Troy. Truly a marvel in the history of the Western world.
Mycenian culture was one of the most known and developed culture in Antic times. We could say it was golden age of Antic Greek culture. Sadly after Mycenian era ended (1500-1300 before New EraAntic Greece fall into dark ages.
Great site, beautiful walk and views. We loved learning more about the history and construction of this well preserved archeological site.
Wonderful site, with lots of signage in Greek and English. We spent the entire morning exploring the site and the museum (on site). Amazing honeycomb tombs, walls, carvings, and the cistern at the far east end of the site. You can just envision the Mycenaeans looking out over the fertile valley they once ruled.
Of you are interested in ancient monument its a place you must visit...by the way is a nice place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view
The people of this time must have had some incredible strengths and intuition to build the way they did. The stones carved are huge and the tools used so basic
Very good views of the top and can visit small museum on same ticket 🎟Went with a group. Need lots of water 💧 on hot day if climbing up the path.
Very enjoyable trip to famous historical site. Probably 1-2 hours needed. Great views both is the site itself and also the surrounding area. The place wasnt too busy, although we had to wait a few minutes for a parking space. Bring plenty of water as we couldnt find a water fountain on site, although there was a small shop selling drinks.
Must see place!!! We were in weekday so no lines no crazy crowds, quiet as I like! I loved little souvenirs shop and small museum!
While most of it was quite flat after ages of wheatering and a disaster or two, it still managed to keep by fascination. An age wasnt named after the city for no reason. This site is really for history lovers but if you expect to see large imposing constructions dont. The fascination with this site, much like that of Thebes comes from its story and what few pieces are left to tell said story.
Mykene is a fun place to be, lots of old buildings, not all that much to interact with, but hey its a historic site build at least 1300 BC. Worth a visit.
One of the most impressive archeological sites I have been! Especially the tombs, the cistern, and off course the lions gate are amazing! A concrete path makes the archeological site well accessible, however it is a big climb up. In summer, go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Amazing setting, the view is breathtaking, one can really feel the history of the place... Be prepared for some mild hiking and burning sun in summer.
Fantastic site, but make sure you dont miss the Tholos of Clytemnestrae which was, with the Lions Gate, the most impressive part of the site for us. The on site museum contains a range of excellently preserved items, as well as a replica of the mask of Agamemnon. There is a snacks and drinks vendor in the car park but you cant take drinks on to the site, so if you buy an ice slushy, be prepared to drink it before entry
Here you can breathe a magical air.You walk in the same places as the great heroes of Mycenae. The site is large and worth a visit. When you cross the Lions Gate it is like entering another dimension. The explanatory signs are well marked and are in Greek and English. To get to the Palace, you have to walk a little uphill but the view from above over the whole site is worth the effort.Once you have descended, do not miss the area before the Lions Gate, the grave of Agamemnon and the remains of the artisans area. The Museum is a few steps from the main entrance and, even if small, its interesting to visit because it is modern and does not clash with the archaeological site.I highly recommend Mycenae!
Very interesting, well presented and popular with a fantastic museum to cool down in afterwards.
Nice ancient Greek destination. Not a must see, but definitely interesting. Mostly foundations survived but the site provides excellent views of the surrounding areas. You really feel like standing in the middle of history. There is a path around the hill where the palace was built as well as the path to the top. Everything is supported with additional information about historical facts.
A place full of history remainds us how ancient people were good architects. It can be easily reached by car
One of the oldest cities on European mainland, clocks in at over 5000 years. You get great structures as well as a beautiful peloponnese landscape to admire. Some of the structures here lead into very deep ancient basements and give you a great Indiana Jonesian feel to it.
Amazing place from the bronze age. Awe-inspiring views and gigantic walls allegedly made by Cyclops. A must see archeological site and monument of Unesco
great experience ! We were lucky..it was cloudy so the temperature was only @ 28°c.. 😀 to be seen on the road from Olympia to Tolon. The price is quite expensive compared to what we paid in Athens..but still free for our teenagers as members of UE.
One of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Greece. Do museum also next door.
Inspired. Stone witnesses of meetings of important people. Agamemnon, winner from Troy, killed at home. He was successful in politics and business, a failure in his personal life. I think we know it. Simple, stone reflections
Wonderful view. If you are European and 24 or below you can enter free. Then i recommend to go to agamenons tomb.
This was one of the unexpected delights of our trip in Greece. I was not aware of this archaeological site prior to visiting, but it ended up being my favorite. The tomb is breathtaking due to its sheer scale and level of preservation. The rest of the site is on a steep hill, which was very windy when we visited. The views are amazing and the ancient site is very interesting. I recommend visiting with a guide.
Dont just go through the gate. Before that on your right, there are two very impressive tombs. Outside the archeological area, there are more scattered tombs.
It is a pity that such places of exceptional world historical importance and beauty are closed to visitors / tourists on holidays (Labor Day)!
Mycenea archaeological site is very impressive , the arena echoes by just the sound of hand clapping the steps are so well done , they are very well balance to go up till the top .constructed with hand crafted rocks the place is magnificent.
Breathtaking to walk the halls of Agamemnon and the house of Atreus. You can feel the epic of Homer here. The ruins are in pretty remarkable shape and well labeled. The site has a museum in walking distance. One thing I higjly recommend is to go to the center of the two tholos style tombs (Atreus and Lion). The acoustics are amazing.
Amazing site to visit. Be ready to climb the hill but it is doable and worth it. Good museum on site.
The UNESCO heritage site of Mycenae is some 20-30 min drive from Nafplio, so it makes a great half day excursion.Bear in mind the site consists of two parts - the main archaeological site up the hill, and the Tomb of Agamemnon which is beneath it down the road (you pass it when driving towards the main site). A single entry ticket of 12 Euros is valid for both. The main site is pretty big and demands some walking uphill - count around 1,5 hours for a visit including the museum. After passing the famous Lions gate you enter the ex-residential area ascending towards the Citadel, built by Cyclopes according to the legend. The site dates back to 2 millenium BC and is set on Argos plain between two hills. The tomb of Agamemnon is a very small site requiring only 10 min to visit
I fell in love with this place; I went twice in 2 days!So much to see, any historian or otherwise would be enchanted. The artifacts and premises are kept exceptionally well, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly.I would love to return one day, God willing!
It is very difficult to find words to describe the emotions this place evokes. To walk around the ancient Acropolis of Mycenae meant walking in the footsteps of my ancestors and admire what they had achieved. The route around the ruins took about an hour and each location had an information board describing what each building was. The views of the valley were breathtaking, and the tombs along with the Lion Gate were awe-inspiring.
Interesting historic archeological site. Enjoyed the museum and the walk along the ruins. Definitely an important stop when visiting the Peloponnesian Peninsula
I definitely suggest to come to visit it in the lower season, from November to March, the tickets are half price and you can move around without the Greek heat. What remained in my mind were the Lion gate, Atreus Tomb and the water cistern. It is really convenient cause you can enter everywhere, even in the museum and the Atreus Tomb with the same ticket.I would suggest to combine the visit also with the city of Nafplion, the first Greek capital, in this case maybe is better if you ask the ticket that let you enter many places in the area (especially if you visit in the High season)
This is a must see. Today it was raining off and on this morning. So good sturdy shoes were a must. Walking on the stone steps and paths can be slippery. In spite of the rain, this site was spectacular.
This site is worth the walk but plan to take some time if you are not used to steps or are orthopedically challenged. This is a long climb up but the site is amazing and very well described and the museum is excellent. So much history that is not as well known. Worth taking some time to read the plaques that are in both Greek and English. If course, the Lions Gate is a must see.
An extremely unique, preserved ancient settlement, very well managed and administered. The Greek government should be commended for their perseverance in keeping these sites open for the public to view.
If your interested in history this is a must! The ticket is fairly priced and the museum is small yet has impressive artifacts. If your not interested in history, a stroll through the ruins is also very nice as they are also impressive and on top of that, there is the view: spectacular panoramic view, which on a clear day is probably breathtaking. We arrived late around 18:00 and they closed at 19:00 and it was enough for the museum and the ruins, but it’s better to arrive sooner. The plus side of arriving late is that the place is less crowded.
As marvelous experience discovering the links with the Ancient Greek myths I read as a child. The huge lion gate took my breath away. The ruins are marvelous to wander around, and again standing inside the mausoleum inspires a sense of wonder. A small museum has artefacts and provides information about the whole site.
It’s a great site that also offers some great views of the area. The museum is small but very interesting. Don’t forget to visit Agamemnon’s tomb on your way out since that’s this site’s highlight. Wear a hat and have some water for the climb.
