Mya Thein Tan Pagoda in Haka
Description
Some parts of Myanmar formerly known as Burma are still highly conservative, extremely cultural and the people still hold dearly to their old traditions. I loved a lot of things about this country, it’s laid back, which meant my introverted self gelled in very well. I somewhat felt at home cause of the kindness, respect, love and humility I got from Burmese people.Nothing compares to sharing your own story and learning about a country first hand.I made a friend Pyae, who also ended up being my tour guide for a few days.Pyae and I got along very well and sometimes ended up in heated debates about the different societies we come from. He asked distasteful but genuine questions. His questions irked me at first then I realized that stories about liberal women have not yet reached all corners of the world, especially not in this conservative country. I took this opportunity to educate him about my country, continent, freedom of choice and speech we have as woman. In turn I learnt a lot about the Burmese way of living. We all have a great deal of knowledge and wisdom to share as humanity. In the midst of our engagements he showed me some amazing places including Hsinbyume Pagoda. This pagoda was built in 1816 by the Bagydaw prince, the heir of King Bodawpaya as a way to show his love for his first wife – Queen Hsinbyume – who unfortunately lost her life during childbirth. In 1836 a major earthquake hit the pagoda and left it severely damaged. Later on, in 1874, King Mindon restored it.
