Seabird rookery with guided tours, whale- & dolphin-watching, a lighthouse & scenic coastal views.
Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve in Kempsey
Description
Privilege
Beautiful place - great views and whales playing out in the ocean.
The rewards here are:- full view of Coffs Harbour- walking through thousands of muttonbird burrows- potential sightings of dolphinsThe price was a relatively tough walk while battling strong winds to the lookout on the eastern end. While there is an elevated wooden boardwalk, it would be great if some railings are there especially on the downhill section.
MoreGorgeous views around the Coffs Harbour coastline and good exercise walking up the steep path.
MoreIf you’re visiting Coffs Harbour, you’ve got to get down to the Coffs Jetty marina to walk along the man-made BreakwallTo the top of Muttonbird Island. It’s free. East to moderate walk. There are minimal stairs - which makes only the breakwall accessible for people in wheelchairs. The view from the top is excellent. We visited in October and witnessed about a dozen whales breaching within about 300-400 metres of where we were standing. The whole walk to the top, and rest, took about an hour to do. But if you’re a fast walker, and you’re not liking out for whales, you could walk up and back within 25 minutes from the Park Beach carpark. There are some good eating locations along the breakwall - including the fisherman’s co-op which serves fish & chips. You’ll find a number of picnic huts at the Coffs end of the breakwall.
MoreGreat view from the top of the island.Worth the walk up even though was windy.
Nice reserve with lots of birds. We went during sunset and the view and the walk was great. The birds made strange noise like crying. Funny and scary experience
MoreFascinating island with lots of Burrows of wedge tailed shearwaters (mutton birds). Great views from the top of Coffs Harbour and the beaches around. The rack and walkway are well maintained. Well worth the visit
MoreLovely walk on formed and raised paths. Very good information notices
Very scenic and a nice track to get across the other side of the island
Have visited this island many times, very easily accessible with great views. Quite a steep climb to the first lookout, but great cardiovascular workout! Well worth the effort, great views up & down the beautiful coastline & of the harbour. The water is a magnificent sapphire blue. Only problem I have is you cannot take your dog
MoreAbsolutely beautiful and a great workout. The views are spectacular. My toddler loves the walk.
MoreOur morning walk! Just beautiful, such a spectacular place in the world at Muttonbird Island Coffs Harbour.
MoreThe best place to go to get a complete view of Coffs Harbour. Awesome views. A nice challenging walk. Just a warning its a high wind area but very well worth it. Also take in the Jetty as well.
MoreSuch an awesome stroll with a bit of steep climb to get to the top! Definitely worth going if you are around the area 😛
MoreThe path and boardwalk are so well provided that you could walk up this hill in your dress shoes! What a beautiful view of the marina on one end and the expansive ocean at the other. A must when you visit Coffs Harbour!
MoreGreat spot the view from the top is great but of a climb up but well worth it.
Great walk. Loved it.
Excellent walk to top!bit steep but you can always stop and have a rest, beautiful view when you get to top, havent been there during breeding season but plan to.
MoreJust today06-07-2021 TuesdayIt was really perfect day with my friend khudeeda & DaowdIn my town Coffs HarbourMuttonbird Island Nature Reserve
MoreBeautiful walk with nice scenery.A bit steep but not for long
We have visited the island each time we stopped over at Coffs Harbour. Its just a beautiful place to have a walk. The panoramic views of Coffs Harbour city, the coast lines or just the vast Pacific Ocean at the peak are just fantastic. The island is nesting site for seabirds but its largely abandoned by feathered residents outside breeding season. This is also a good whale watching spot so I was told but we havent visited with the right timing yet. The entire island is covered with green vegetation. Theres a strangely minty smell in the air which reminds me of some south east Asia dishes. The seawall connecting the island to the main land makes reaching it by foot very easy. It appears a lot locals walk the island as daily routine. However, after learning the seawall also enables rodents to reach the island for egg stealing I have a mixed feeling about it.
MoreA beautiful walking path across the top of the island provides a glorious view of the harbour and neighbouring beaches. There is a lot of movement around you with lizards, rats, birds and bugs scurrying about their afternoon activities. One thing to note is that at either end of the island the path can be quite steep if you are walking with people who may struggle with the angle. At least it is smooth and not uneven.
MoreTop place to go for a walk and see some nice views.
Great place for a walk. Very interesting island. Beautiful sunrises and amazing views of the coastline. Be prepared for a little bit of a walk but its well worth it.
MoreIt was a fun family outing + exercise, about an hour walk to the tip and back without rushing. Informative posters throughout, be prepared for the smell 🥴 Ocean views must be gorgeous at dawn. Beautiful overlook of the marina. Highly recommend 👍
MoreLoved this walk!! Must have some level of fitness it is steep but worth it when you get to the top!!
MoreIt’s a steep walk, definitely not wheelchair accessible. Good views and you can see dolphins in the water and nesting bird on the way up.
MoreAbsolutely stunning! We went on a family walk and it was definitely worth it. Gorgeous views, perfect walking length for a laid back weekend adventureThe only reason Im giving 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the fact there were a few dead pigeons that had been left at the entry which was an upsetting sight
MoreVisit at sunrise or sunset. We didnt see any of the local birds here though. Stunning views of the town and hinterland
MoreDrove up from Sydney the Friday afternoon and stayed close Muttonbird Island. Beautiful early morning walk. Amazing seeing the burrows and fauna. Was good to read up on the history of the island: when it was connected to mainland; major events like fire nearly wiping out all wildlife or the Queens visit doing the same ein the 1970s and why. Would like to take my kids back to show. The walk over to the ocean side is definitely worth the 20 min walk.
MoreWorth of 15 mins walk. Excellent view of Jetty and sea. If you lucky might encounter Mutton Birds. Walk bit steep but not hard at all.
MoreOne of the nicest vantage points in Coffs, with great views and information on the shearwaters that migrate here. Not a lot of birds around during the day, but the views are worth coming for. The walk can be steep (wind is also very strongso bring proper shoes and water.
MoreGreat experience. Although the weather was not good but very nice place to go.
Home to the mutton bird, the island has paved tracks and signage to inform you of the location. Take a stroll to the other side of the island for ocean views and wades crashing onto the shore.
MoreEnjoy stunning views overlooking Coffs harbour. Visit here early and sunny morning and its going to be a long lasting experience.
MoreAmazing views across the Solitary Islands as well as back across Coffs Harbour. A great place for a walk and sightseeing.
MoreLovely views! Educational! Toilets and free parking available.Restaurant on the area, take away shop or buy your own seafood and cook them.
Moregreat walk and views. around 1hour to 1hour 30mins return with pictures taken
Peaceful and beautiful views. Quite a steep walk and not suitable for wheelchairs.
MoreWhat a wonderful spot to look out to the ocean/ local area! May need to bring a jacket/ hair elastic because it can be very windy. Was able to see a school of fish in the breaking waves.
MoreLovely walk to this nature reserve. The view was spectacular and well maintained
Amazing walk, track very well kept.A great way to see the sunrise.
I walked up here in the dark to catch the sunrise, bit creepy due to the snake factor, but once the sun rose, wow, worth the walk. It is also a nice walk through the marina to get there.
MoreA great walk on a nice sunny day very interesting seeing all the nests. Also a good whale watching outlook during whale season
MoreShort walk along the causeway past the marina, steep climb but not far to viewing platform, panoramic if windy views of Coffs Harbour, the marina and shoreline from seaward side, further walk along the top of the island to another viewing platform built on rocks a few metres above sea level. Whales may be sighted from here; we didnt see any, I think you would need binoculars to get a sighting of them from there.
MoreOutstanding place to visit, surrounded by Pacific ocean, walk along the track through the Island up to the cliff, where waters meet rocks breaking into them, splashing and making unrealistic noise and breezes. Watch Coffs Harbours surrounded by hills and mountains from west, watch amazing beaches from above. And in addition its free.
MoreWhat a great outing... The walk along the jetty into the park is well worth it. Great information on the Aboriginal History and the Birds inhabiting the island... Do yourself a favour and visit, you wont regret it!
MoreBeautiful location. You can get a 360 deg view of the Harbour. Bit of a walk from the marina to the lookout spot on the edge of the island, but definitely worth a visit.
MoreThis is a relatively easy hike up a grassy hill. The views from the top, including the shoreline, beaches, and Coffs Harbour, are magnificent. If youre in the area, Id say this is a must-do.
MoreA great nature walk on a well designed path with explanatory signs to protect the mutton bird nests. This leads to a 360 degree lookout and extends to a lower cliff top ocean view. Well done. It will be even better when the break water works are completed making the entrance walkway even better. A must for anyone visiting Coffs Harbour.
