Museum is about the 1963 Earthquake which destroyed the city almost entirely. The building itself is remarkable, such a shame it will be surrounded by some newly constructed mall/apartment building. So bad this could happen with heritage sites. There is also a guide in the museum, Mihaly who will guide you through the history as a true master of his trade. Great guy, great stories. A new café/souvenir/book shop would be nice to be open in the future.

Very interesting museum about the earthquake in 1963. It’s worth visiting to understand why Skopje looks the way it looks today. Free entrance. On Google it says “temporarily closed” but it is opened.

Closed. A staff member indicated there were no exhibits to see but there was a language barrier. A recent review shows photos of an exhibit so I can only think they are old photos. Arrived at 4pm on a Tuesday. Very disappointing.

Closed as it indicates on Maps. The clock stopped during the earthquake in 1963, but I went there around the same time, so automatically thought the clock had the right time and it was still early.

The city of Skopje suffered from a terrible earthquake in 1963 that is still in the minds of many people who live there. To keep that memory alive and to avoid going through a similar experience, the Museum of the City of Skopje honors the 1070 residents who died in that event. Being the old train station at the time of the earthquake, the building of the museum is connected to the same past. There are other exhibitions and happenings that take place in the same building, making it worth the detour.

From other reviews I must conclude some exhibitions were closed or has been removed, since there was nothing about skopje on display when we visited. Not sure though as there was no info or anyone there who were interested in informing us.As it was when we were there, it was probably the least rewarding place to visit for anyone interested in this city. One star earned for being free and small!

The 1963 earthquake makes Skopje unique place. This tiny museum in half destroyed railway station must be visited. Strangely there are ancient relics aparat from the story of earthquake and city reconstruction.Museum is for free and in 30 minutes one can grasp what Skopje experienced.

A small museum in the city center, worth visiting. Entrance fee around 100 MKD. Many photos and detailed info, also in English. Main focus on the earth quake 1963, but I would like have been more info regarding other things too. Therefore, one missing star.

Really interesting museum located in the old railway station half destroyed in the 1963 earthquake, the clock is still at 0517 which is when the earthquake struck. Loads of interesting artefacts and information, and an insight in to life in old Skopje. I would recommend locals and tourists visit it. Entrance was free when I went.

Interesting artefact from different periods of Macedonian history... unfortunately the place looks derelict, labelling very small, dark rooms, lacks organization... most understandable part is related to the earthquake. Entrance was free.

Built in 1938. It was the most beautiful train station on the Balkans, until the earthquake in 1963. Left ruined, but preserved. Today museum of the city of Skopje.

Nice museum in old railway station which was partly demolished in 1963 earthquake. Just a right wing is available, the rest is demolished. Inside are just 4 rooms, 1st is some necklaces and so, second is dedicated to 1st elevator in Skopje from beginning of the 20st century and you can also step into the elevator, which is nice. Secondly the ground floor is from period before Christ. 3rd room is dedicated to earthquake, which is really nice and detailed with pictures and newspapers from that time from all round the world. 4th room is empty dedicated to some art, which is not there. Entry is free! Overal nice, but building need reconstruction soon.

Located inside what’s left of the old train station, City Museum currently features two small collections on two floors. At ground level, the museum offers the briefest of insights into life in the city before WWII. Exhibits include costumes, photographs andpersonal possessions from a number of Macedonian minorities including Jews, Albanians, Gypsies, Serbs and Vlachs.Down the stairs there are few dimly lit cases showcasing some fine examples of ancient bits and bobs dug up in the vicinity. The pride of the museum is the 6000-year-old, 15cm-high clay “Adam from Govrlevo” statue, which was discovered in 2000 and put on display here in later 2006. The statue is ranked among the world’s top 10 Neolithic artefacts, as it is perhaps the earliest representation of a human figure - with ribs, spine, belly button and a regrettably chopped-off erection.
