Photos, maps & other artifacts trace NYC history from its 16th-century birth to the present day.
Currently my favorite museum in the city. The exhibitions are incredibly thoughtful and interactive shows that invite you into different experience of the city through its infrastructure, objects, and people. It’s both delightful and impactful.I would highly recommend the current exhibit on the systems that support NYC prior to digital technologies. Really lovely artifact-based narrative. And don’t miss the balcony accessible through the main floor exhibit.
Very informative galleries, i feel like I’ve learned more history here in these few visits I’ve had than in all of my time in school. Analog city is fantastic, i never would’ve known that with all of our present day tech, the NYC subway system has never been upgraded to digital… Go figure.
The best thing about this place is the included tour. The tour guide was amazing and so knowledgeable! (Forgot if she mentioned her name but she’s the school teacher). It’s hard to really get a understanding for the exhibits and true sense of the history without her.
Its a beautiful venue. I went to an after hours Halloween party yesterday and had a great time. The museum allowed us to walk through the exhibits in addition to dancing in the interior courtyard.
I love this museum. Their exhibit are very interesting and informative. They have a great cafetería that offers delicious pastries and sandwiches. This museum also has the best Halloween party . You will have fun at this location. The crowd is very friendly and cheerful.
Very good customer service and it’s good you can pay as much as you can afford. There is lots to do and the viewing of the documentary is a must do. The exhibitions were really interesting and good. I also liked the artwork.
If you want to discover NY history, you are in the right place. Super interesting, history of immigration, technology, food. Perfect place to visit in rainy days.
This is a less known, less appreciated museum. It details the history of NYC over the years. I loved watching the movie they show which features how NYC evolved. It was very interesting.
Really interesting history of New York. Not the biggest museum so you won’t spend too long here it’s but worth the visit. It’s advertised as free/pay what you think but they actually suggest a price of $20 per adult when getting a ticket at the entrance. It’s okay considering the size
interesting museum - great film about the history of NYC.We really liked the expo about activism in NYC, different topics and people with their stories showcased. They also have a great photo expo
We had an incredible (complimentarytour of the “NY at its Core” exhibit (maybe the most engaging tour I’ve ever had at a museum anywhere). There was also a great 30 minute movie that’s worth watching as well, to summarize everything you learned throughout the exhibits. I ended up buying three books from their bookstore I was so impressed! Definitely a must-see museum for anyone new to or visiting NYC.
AWESOME pay as you wish Museum. I thoroughly enjoyed the NYC food systems exhibit. The 30 min overview of NYC is also a must-watch!The exhibits are well curated and contemporary. Also, the cafe on the 3rd floor had amazing carrot cake for $6!
Pay what you can museum, near the northern end of Museum Mile on 5th Avenue. Beautiful building. Several impactful exhibitions: history of New York, food in New York, dollhouse by a New York artist family, Stettheimer, and more. Nice cafe on 2nd floor. Video on New York in theatre on lower level. And two gift shops!!
This location is for everyone that are over what you see in right now historic other neighborhood Landmark it could be data on you will like of something like it was just like the same one in Brooklyn Manhattan and the Bronx something instead of where you didnt notice is something instead of it is that never see it but now youre already saw it its for everyone that will visitors and movers and even the new take care of our owner that are well it looks very nice the outside but it can transform it inside of a futuristic of well a house or apartment a one two and three floors and especially that theres some land or it is a viable to everyone you will see anyway because well theres so many space that the Bronx have and the Bronx is going to be having it is growing it is better and its going to be like a for couples loved ones children families and the beginners of families and other the start of family and to raise a family you will see
MCNY is my favorite NYC museum for repeat visits. Always learn something new & intriguing (rotating exhibits are small and easy to consume in a single visit; latest, "Analog City", is full of weird and startling facts, especially for GenXersand core exhibit (join a docent-led tourare enjoyable and not too dense. On site cafe is good, (and awesome Frenchys bakery is 10 min walk away!). Easy transit via bus or train from midtown.
The best museum in New York, a great exposition! I strongly recommend it to everyone who wants to know more about the history of NYC
The museum is pretty cool. You can buy the tickets from top view or from reception, and you also get free access to another sister museum. It is fun if you are really interested in history and old artifacts.
Wonderful museum that captures the spirit of the City and does a great job of curating and updating their exhibits. The place is just a few floors (3 or 4, I cant quite recalland is set up so that there are just 2-4 exhibits per floor. This translates to a great stop-in for a few hours; not one of those museums that are overwhelming. I tend to drop by on Saturday mornings for a few hours before walking across the street (literallyto the park for a lunch stroll. Two little museum shops on the ground floor and a small cafe on the second floor. Never crowded in all the times Ive visited. Tickets can be bought upon entry or in advance online, with frequent deals offered via Groupon-type platforms.
Ive visited twice and its been amazing both times. The first floor fixed exhibits are super interesting if youre an NYC history geek like me. You can easily spend 4 hours here (including the 40 min intro film, which if definitely worth watching). Most events from the Dutch settling the city to present day are covered. There is lots to read, look at, and interact with, athough I wouldnt say that this museum is super kid-friendly -- its very information dense. The revolving exhibits are fascinating, and this time there was an 80s NYC music exhibit (Hip Hop, Soul, Electronicand a super interesting "Analog NYC" section.
Lovely museum with interesting artifacts and endless information spanning centuries of NYC history and culture. Be sure to watch the video on the lower level before starting your journey -- its excellent!
Love the exhibition here❤️ The gift shop is also a nice place to get some NYC stuff 😍
This museum contains a great history of the city on the ground floor, covering its formation as a city from the Dutch days. Theres not much information from before that period. It goes all the way to the present (or 2012 ratherwith exhibits on the stock exchange and music of the 80s.Theres a lot of small details and artifacts that it can take a large part of your day to explore all of it.
I love museums and this one is housed in a beautiful building with gorgeous architecture. Unfortunately, I couldnt find much to get excited about here. I visited in order to understand the history of NYC, which is mostly confined to one gallery. The gallery is primarily black with limited lighting and the artifacts are in glass boxes. Its hard visually to read and see the items and descriptions because of the glare on the glass across almost all of the displays in quite a dark space. Its an old-fashioned approach to museum science when youre required to lean over and squint. I learned more about New York by visiting the NY Historical Society & Museum, who have a far better collection and a superior user experience. Ill visit MCNY again one day to try again, but I went to six museums during my week in New York and this one was the weakest by far. And yet it was similarly priced. Theyve got tons of physical space and not a lot in it. The possibilities are exciting. It would be nice if they visit the Museum of the American Revolution in Philly and reevaluate their collection and overall strategy. NYC was such a key player in the revolutionary war, for example. Ill be back to try again. Maybe its possible to get a guided tour.
The museum is a must-see for New Yorkers. I especially warmly recommend watching a film about the history of the City, created by Stanley Tucci (Stanley Tucci search for New York, joke)))
It was a beautiful moonlight Movie event. We would come back for other events.
Quite disappointing. The 30 minute video about the evolution of New York is definitely the highlight and very interesting to see. The other exhibits are not very interesting some are okay, however, nothing stands out. The museum has a lot of potential, unfortunately this potential is lost and makes it an average museum.
I found this museum by accident walking alongside the central park. I decided to walk in and wow I was amazed. This museum is so well done and fascinating! The digital parts are great and the design too. If you are curious as to how New York became what it is today I recommend it very much!
Last time I had visited was 40 years ago. Its a totally different experience now. Changing exhibits were very good and really enjoyed them and spent more time than we had planned. mol Especially the Analogy NYC, which had lots of hands on for adults and kids.
very nice museum, pay as you wish in person4 floors, takes about 2-3 hours to see all of it
Lovely museum with tons on display. The first floor is just what you expect, the history of NYC over time. Loved it. Then they had other exhibits. I quite liked the New Yorkers history of protest exhibit. The cheeky post it on the right to womens health care was a very good touch, and was very relevant. Worth your time.
I enjoyed it! It’s a little baby museum, compared to others, but still has a nice concept, layout, and artifacts. It’s always a nice touch when they acknowledge the history of the area for POC.
The guided tour was great, we really appreciated it. I want to thank our guide for that. However the staff did not warned us about a wedding was about to happen inside the museum. Our experience in the museum was wasted by the technical staff who was shouting while setting up tables and audio devices loudly in the hallways. We then were kicked out before the official closing time. We could not finish the visit and paid the full price for that. When, we exited the museum, I said to the staff we were disappointed. They answered "come back tomorrow at 10am". We are tourists and leave NYC tomorrow... Bad customer service
I loved every moment being here! Ive never heard anyone really talk about this museum much so I didnt really have much expectations. Its small compared to the museums down the street, but so worth the visit especially if youre from NYC! They have a 30 minute film about the beginnings of New York in the lower level which was really interesting. I personally loved the 80s music exhibit and the activist exhibit. Also the Celebration of the City photography exhibit was amazing. They have other exhibits on view as well thats really cool. I didnt get to try the cafe as it was closed, but the seating area for it is bright and spacious. Highly recommend!
Pretty cool experience about the history of new York. Lots of cool exhibits. Would recommend
The museum is a lot of fun. I visit every time I go to New York because the exhibit seem to change pretty regularly!
The Museum of Life in New York ..very interesting .An interesting exhibit including a film about the development of the city.
If youre looking for an interesting museum in the City, this is it. They have some really cool exhibits. I originally went to see the Puppet exhibit (which unfortunately is now overbut found other gems here. The interior is gorgeous as well! Its a great place to go if you wanna learn about NYC.
If you like new music, fashion culture, MTV in 1980s, youll get more background knowledge here. History of New York city is presented by projection tech. You might react with projector screen. There is one thing I thought NYC could be better at other topic of exhibitions, such as doll house exhibition.
Of the museum experience I’ve had in NYC I will say this was pretty lackluster. There were good exhibits but it seems like we only got 70% of the museum. It just was not exciting. I learned a little, not more than you can find online. The music history exhibit was pretty cool but overall I will skip it next time.
Especially appreciated Rising Tide and Port City exhibits-- both very well done and engaging. Port City in particular uses technology well to allow the viewer to explore at your own pace. Super engaging museum and fascinating way to learn about the city.
NYC centric history, lots of fun facts about live music moments, super-cute little arcade (2-player miss pac-man table), great old building. Worth a stop in!!
I really enjoyed the museum. All of the exhibits were very good especially the New York, New Music, Stettheimer Dollhouse, Activist NY and NY at its Core exhibits.
Love this museum! It’s great for people who want to learn more about this iconic city. They also have online exhibition. Visit their website! I got a free ticket from CulturePass.
Small but great museum if you want to learn more about history of New York City. Pay as you wish to enter with suggested price of 20$. Exhibits are informative and engaging. Has a NYC music history exhibit, puppets of NYC, history of the city, a theater with a 20 minute video of how NYC of today was formed and a games arcade. Will take 2-3 hours to go through the exhibits. Would recommend a visit.
Small museum that features New York history, music and arts. We explored it in just 1 hour. The staff are nice and friendly too.
Beautiful museum. The exhibits are engaging for both adults and kids and show different facets of New York. We especially loved the dollhouse exhibit. The 30 min video was very informative and interesting. The museum is designed in a modern and inviting way. A fun trip and unique experience. (Pay what you wish if you ask at ticket counter :great gift shop too.
I would definitely recommend this museum if you don’t want to get overwhelmed like with MOMA or Met and want to learn about the NYC. There are three floors, I would recommend to start with the first one and then the collections will go chronologically. There are also couple of special exhibits, e.g. one about puppets. There is also a pretty cool museum shop and there was a small cafe.
Great pay-what-you-wish museum. We only got through the first floor in an hour (the exhibits document the progression of NYC over time). It was great! Lots of cool artifacts to see from the 1800’s up to 2012. We’ll definitely be back to do the rest of the museum!
I thought this museum was really cool! It tends to get overlooked because it has to keep up with the Met, MoMa, etc. This is unfortunate for them, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing for you, as the visitor. You probably won’t be stuck in crazy lines or crowds, so you can move at your own pace with comfort. As far as the content goes, I really enjoyed the breadth. They had fantastic exhibits regarding the history of the city, a basketball exhibit, an activism exhibit, etc. I could go on about all of the exhibits, but you’d be better served to spend a few dollars to go see, and learn from, them for yourself.I will say that they had a futuristic exhibit that was closed due to COVID (in September 2020that I’m bummed I didn’t get to see. With that said, the museum is still worth experiencing. It is very well maintained, and the staff are more than happy to give you some supplemental information if you ask for it.
Born and raised in NY, Ive never heard of this museum. I ran across a groupon for it and took my son here while visiting for the holidays. It was amazing! All the history. We happened to be there on a day where a famous hip hop legend was giving a tour there and interacting with the patrons. We had a great time here. I love that my son had fun interacting with the audio/video and the hands on learning tools. What a great experience.
