Museum of Edinburgh in Greenock
Description
Privilege
Love their exhibitions of Old and New Town. Free entry
Small museum dedicated to specifically Edinburghs history I will say.I prefer spending a whole afternoon in the national Scottish museum
MoreLovely little museum. Great diaroma of old town Edinburgh. Loved the silver collection too.
MoreGreat little museum focused on local Edinburgh history. About 2 hours if you go through properly - maybe a bit less.
MoreVery impressed with this hidden gem. Full of Scottish history and I feel like it is arranged perfectly. Loved the section on Greyfriars Bobby.
MoreA free museum in Canongate, worth stopping off at if coming back from Holyrood Palace. It is within some of the old buildings that line the Royal Mile and worth visiting if only to see the interior of these. There are some interesting exhibits concerning the history of the immediate area (Canongate / Holyroodin particular.
MoreExcellent find. Loads of information and the artifacts on view were so fascinating. I love all that stuff. The only negative was not enough signage to tell you were not to go and the route to follow through the museum but well worth a visit.
MoreNice little museum on the Royal mile, some good exhibits, friendly staff and another free one
Morea nice museum located in an old house,(see picture with inside balconywell displayed history of old and new town of Edinburgh. My advice: worth to visit 😏👍
MoreNice little museum. Free, so worth popping in if youre in the area.
Amazing exhibition. The old house, or should I say houses/stories, just gives so much atmosphere. Old, historic, comfy. Very nice!
MoreLovely museum . I personally thought that there was a lot to see and it was very interesting . I was pleasantly surprised that it was free . The staff was very kind and helpful . The building inside and out was beautiful and despite the buzyness of the street it was very quiet inside which I truly appreciated . The outside exhibit in the garden was also a very beautiful touch .
MoreLovely place. Very quirky. No lifts but you can leave prams or wheelchairs downstairs.
MoreIt has the richest collection of items and information to help you to understand the history and culture of Scotland.
MoreIn my opinion a must see if you visit the city for the first time
If you are I to old pottery and silverware, than this is a great place for you.I however prefer the permanent painting collection at the Edinburgh Gallery or Mary Kings Court
MoreBeautifully kept small museum showing the history of Edinburgh through the artifacts. Worth a visit - conveniently placed along the Royal mile.
MoreWe couldnt get inside because there were no tickets online and on site. Hes handsome out there. I recommend buying tickets much earlier.
MoreFirst of all - its FREE! I mean winner winner for this amazing building to wander around never mind the museum it contains which is also excellent. Check out Greyfriars Bobby without the crowds around the real one!
MoreReally nice small museum. Lots of interesting things including wooden water pipes.
MoreFascinating stroll through the history of Edinburgh and its famous characters. Free to enter. Really cute gift shop. Whats not to ❤
MoreIt is useful and necessary to knowing aborto the origen and history of Edimbugh
Great section on urban planning of Edinburgh. If youre into that youll want to see the original New Town plans
MoreThis was a sweet little museum with lots of interesting tidbits. Their gift shop & the staff there were quite nice.
MoreLots of information about Edinburgh... Good for adults & kids as they have a room to colour, etc.
MoreMost museums are free we discovered. This when is housed in an original structure dating back to the 1570s. There are so curious artifacts here. I was most interested in the model of Edinburgh as a walled city from 500 years ago.
MoreFantastic place to find out the history of Edinburgh. Staff are super friendly and informative, beautiful building thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Oh and clean toilet there too. Would highly recommend as its educational and free to enter.
MoreGood museum free to go in lots to see
Great museum, free, even smells historical! Nice walk-thru, if you want to read all the blurbs in detail I would suggest 1-1.5h.
MoreFree entrance but do donate when you get out and buy from the shop. A good number of collections from the different eras of Edinburgh.
MoreDepends a bit on what you like. Starts off with proper history, which I really enjoyed. Im less excited by silver craftsmanship and Earl Hague, but thats me not the museum.
MoreGreat start for visitors to learn about this amazing historic city. Details on so many aspects of the people, culture and history. Excellent displays of a beautiful diversity of highly crafted items. And it’s FREE
MoreLoads to see walking from the castle down the Royal mile to Holyroodhouse. Lovely city well named the Athens of the North
MoreIt was a nice eye opening experience.
I was not very impressed by the collection. I guess it showed pretty well how the life must have been in the old days of Edinburgh and what kind of possessions they people must have had. But I need more sign to tell me what I was looking at. Very charming old house though and it was free to enter so I guess thats good.
MoreWell worth a look around. It’s a great little museum with tons of different things to see. It has a lot of information about Edinburgh and the history of it. Friendly staff and a cute little gift shop at the end. It’s free entry and a great way to spend an hour to so, especially on a rainy day.
MoreGreat staff, beautiful little museum with some interesting things, well worth a visit.
MoreGood experience but was a lot of information about one guy Earl Dougie Haig. Like all about his life and Im just like I get this guy did a lot but why is he worth so many rooms in this museum. When we did a vaults tour the guide told us all these things barely mentioned in the museum like the public executions, the prison, the copper bricks, the sanitation issues, like I felt I got a more broad authentic description from that than looking at Haigs pictures and clothing and weapons and all these things. The museum really did not present a full or broad view of the citys history. I really think it needs an overhaul. Also it was free but I would be willing to pay entrance fee for some updates in content.
MoreAn interesting place to add to your list when in Edinburgh. Allow yourself a couple of hours to wander about the quirky layout and see the exhibits. Not really suitable for peeps who cant do stairs. ... but it is free - but remember to throw some £s in the donation box.
MoreLovely house to know an interesting and different points of history of the city
Well worth a look if you want to find out about the history of Edinburgh. We stumbled upon the Museum whilst walking up the Royal Mile and very glad we did. The Museum has so much to see in it and goes into a lot of detail of the history of Edinburgh. George, one of the museum attendants, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the pieces on display. There is so much to see we are going to make a second trip back (at least!to see the rest of the pieces there.
MoreMuseum is located in the very old building, have a interesting parts , but little bit small for capital city and such a long and rich history
MoreThis is a very old building and there is no way you could creep around unnoticed as every floorboard creeks...the building needs some tlc but that would ruin its natural aging... Its a little museum in comparison to most Ive visited, but still has lots to offer regards history of the area. You probably only need 1 hour here to have a good look around, maybe 90 minutes at a push.
MoreThe museum is a small but well organized space. It takes you through the ages of how Edinburgh evolved . Great place to spend a few hours
MoreInteresting place to visit. A little bit too small though... I found too little information about history of Edinburgh and my suggestions would be to do everything in an interactive way - just perfect for nowadays children who do not want just look and read, they want to get the information by playing.
MoreIt looks small from the outside, but theres lots to see in this free museum! There is a gift shop with decent priced souvenirs, so be sure to make a purchase to support the museum :)
MoreNice museum to explore the ancient history and the importance of Edinburgh in the old ages. There are some interesting collection of antique and vantage pieces; paintings, glasses and old maps . 👍🏻
MoreThis little free museum is a gem. Filled with history of Edinburgh with an interesting collection. Including a very nice interactive play area for children. If you would prefer to avoid stairs however this may not be the museum for you. Worth a visit. The staff was extremely friendly.
MoreA small museum, its alright. Worth popping into if you were passing, Id say but I wouldnt plan a day around it. You wont need any longer than an hour here and Id give the shop a miss entirely.
MoreThis tiny building sure packed a lot of historical gems inside! Pretty impressive collection of historical artifacts. The museum has a big room with all kind of hands-on activities for kids too and even a dress up closet. Definitely worth of visiting. And its free.
