A free museum in Canongate, worth stopping off at if coming back from Holyrood Palace. It is within some of the old buildings that line the Royal Mile and worth visiting if only to see the interior of these. There are some interesting exhibits concerning the history of the immediate area (Canongate / Holyroodin particular.

Excellent find. Loads of information and the artifacts on view were so fascinating. I love all that stuff. The only negative was not enough signage to tell you were not to go and the route to follow through the museum but well worth a visit.

Lovely museum . I personally thought that there was a lot to see and it was very interesting . I was pleasantly surprised that it was free . The staff was very kind and helpful . The building inside and out was beautiful and despite the buzyness of the street it was very quiet inside which I truly appreciated . The outside exhibit in the garden was also a very beautiful touch .

Most museums are free we discovered. This when is housed in an original structure dating back to the 1570s. There are so curious artifacts here. I was most interested in the model of Edinburgh as a walled city from 500 years ago.

I was not very impressed by the collection. I guess it showed pretty well how the life must have been in the old days of Edinburgh and what kind of possessions they people must have had. But I need more sign to tell me what I was looking at. Very charming old house though and it was free to enter so I guess thats good.

Well worth a look around. It’s a great little museum with tons of different things to see. It has a lot of information about Edinburgh and the history of it. Friendly staff and a cute little gift shop at the end. It’s free entry and a great way to spend an hour to so, especially on a rainy day.

Good experience but was a lot of information about one guy Earl Dougie Haig. Like all about his life and Im just like I get this guy did a lot but why is he worth so many rooms in this museum. When we did a vaults tour the guide told us all these things barely mentioned in the museum like the public executions, the prison, the copper bricks, the sanitation issues, like I felt I got a more broad authentic description from that than looking at Haigs pictures and clothing and weapons and all these things. The museum really did not present a full or broad view of the citys history. I really think it needs an overhaul. Also it was free but I would be willing to pay entrance fee for some updates in content.

An interesting place to add to your list when in Edinburgh. Allow yourself a couple of hours to wander about the quirky layout and see the exhibits. Not really suitable for peeps who cant do stairs. ... but it is free - but remember to throw some £s in the donation box.

Well worth a look if you want to find out about the history of Edinburgh. We stumbled upon the Museum whilst walking up the Royal Mile and very glad we did. The Museum has so much to see in it and goes into a lot of detail of the history of Edinburgh. George, one of the museum attendants, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the pieces on display. There is so much to see we are going to make a second trip back (at least!to see the rest of the pieces there.

This is a very old building and there is no way you could creep around unnoticed as every floorboard creeks...the building needs some tlc but that would ruin its natural aging... Its a little museum in comparison to most Ive visited, but still has lots to offer regards history of the area. You probably only need 1 hour here to have a good look around, maybe 90 minutes at a push.

Interesting place to visit. A little bit too small though... I found too little information about history of Edinburgh and my suggestions would be to do everything in an interactive way - just perfect for nowadays children who do not want just look and read, they want to get the information by playing.

This tiny building sure packed a lot of historical gems inside! Pretty impressive collection of historical artifacts. The museum has a big room with all kind of hands-on activities for kids too and even a dress up closet. Definitely worth of visiting. And its free.
