Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide - Museum in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
One of the most emotional museum I visited. I highly recommend it if you are in Sarajevo.
Excellent museum to learn more about Bosnias recent sad history. Full of incredible testimonies to understand what real life was during the war period.
If you are in Sarajevo, you must visit this museum to get some sense of the atrocities in the early 90’s in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The museum has a lot of information, videos, and paraphernalia showing these crimes. Parts are disturbing—as the actions were quite disturbing. The exhibits go through the preface, military actions, and war trials.
Would be a travesty to visit Sarajevo and not visit this museum. Worth allowing at least a couple of hours to explore properly. The history is mostly given through artefacts and personal stories of those who struggled through the period. There are also a few videos - mostly interviews and original footage from that time.It is worth visiting early on in your stay to provide context for visits to other sites you may make later on. Definitely do not leave Sarajevo without checking it out.
It was a nice museum about the Bosnian Massacre and its effects. There are many topics to talk about and these deep issues have caused the museum to be very busy. Its a bit confusing and hard to follow. Apart from that, you understand the value of the museum very well. Especially seeing such a great destruction of our recent history will help you to establish a stronger bond.
More attention needs to be given to the displayed text and pictures. The lights quality is poor and glares what’s displayed on the walls. Not good value for money. Deserves better presentation.
Kinda depressing, yet very informative. Would recommend everyone to visit to know about the history of Bosnia & Herzegovina (Particularly the siege of Sarajevo).
A very sobering experience of what happened during the Sarajevo siege. Such intimate accounts of what everyday people went through during the longest siege of modern history. The staff care a lot about the place and tell you their stories. It is a must see if you want to truly understand the history of this extraordinary city.
A must see in Sarajevo - one must not forget what happened so recently. Better be mentally prepared, this is a ride through history and the atrocities done after the declaration of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina in early 1992 until 1996. Still a mandatory visit.
The Museum is fascinating; there is a lot of content, many things to read, and a perfect movie about the war. Everything is very touching and crucial to know to remember and never repeat. Its a simple museum; the gallery is near and compliments this experience in the best way.
The visit It is sadly worthy. It shows the cruelty and sadness of war and how humans can turn into animals. However, I find really controversial the fact of making business with that. The entrance should be free. No more comments.
Harrowing but so needed to bring to light the horrors of what happend to the Muslims of Bosnia. Very detailed account of war and the siege. A must visit if in Sarajevo or even Bosnia.
You should not miss this place when you visit Sarajevo. The exhibition of objects, photos and videos is worth a few hours of your time, and you may come out thinking about past but also current war times…
it is very scary, it must be seen, there are articles translated into Turkish and English inside. everyone must see it. I saw with my own eyes that there are still people with this bad idea.I would definitely recommend visiting the museum.
Excellent way of displaying Bosnian history. Touching and connecting.
Harrowing experience, and difficult to rate with numbers. Its a raw museum with graphic images of what happened in Bosnia near the end of the century. It consists mainly of personal stories, accompanied by items and photos of horrific events and injuries. Its important that visitors can see what happened without sugarcoating it, but be prepared to watch these images before you enter. There is an interesting discussion to be had on whether the shock effect of graphic images is a good or bad thing. I would have enjoyed a bit more historical context, like details of troop movements or statements of ideologists. On the other hand, the many personal stories will touch every visitor.A difficult, but important visit if you can stomach graphic images and stories.
The museum shows the horrors of the 1990s war though personal stories of survivors and family. Not very large, but still too much suffering in one place. Must visit if youre interested/know little about the war
Its very, very sad, but definitely worth seeing to educate yourself on the realities of the horrific war and horrors of wars in general.
Something to learn so much about the Last war and Genocide between 1992-1995.A must see in Sarajevo.
Absolutely mind-blowing, devastating experience. You should absolutely visit this place and spend a good 1-2 hours here to understand local history.
Hearth touching experience. When in Sarajevo its a must.Per non dimenticare!Fight war not wars!
No need to say that this place is a must if you are planning a visit to Sarajevo. I strongly suggest to the visitors to get an idea of what happened in Bosnia during the 1990s so that you can really comprehend the purpose of the museum. The place makes you really reflect on the mistakes and the evil humanity is capable to do. Not a light experience but necessary in my opinion.
Not if you happen to pass by, but you should definetely go and visit this museum. It is beyond a museum.. I spent two and half hours and it hurt me a lot reading and seeing all things and stuff and realizing how sufferred Muslim people in the 20th centery just in the middle of civilized Europe! Put this museum on the top of your visit list.
It was very strong experience for me to visit this museum. You could feel the heaviness inside. In the museum, there is lot of stories, memories, clothes and equipments.
Very informative and heartbreaking museum about the genocide that happen in the early 90s in Bosnia. Entry fee is 12 marks per person. There is a room where you can write on post it’s. However, some of the information about what happened was hard to read due to the lighting and height of the photos with captions.
Such a touching place... I would absolutely recommend anyone visiting Sarajevo to give this museum a try... I was not very convinced at first but eventually I spent more than 2 hours inside and could not see everything. From real life objects and remnants from the war to real footage and photographies from this daunting episode of our recent history...
this was a truly moving experience. i learned so much about the war and genocide in BIH that I didn’t know anything about, and also learned about modern forms of torture. the museum was well laid out and had lots of different types of artifacts, models, and pictures/video. i wouldn’t recommend to take small children here but otherwise i think everyone should experience this.
everyone must have seen! The surviving war victims never received any compensation - on the contrary! they have to see a Bosnian head of state claiming that the genocide in srebrenica is a lie! This museum gives a voice to the victims of war & shows them that they have not been forgotten. Thank you! ❤️
No words can describe or prepare you for what you will see and learn there. Even if you are well learned and versed in the history of the war in 90s, you will get weak-kneed and devastated. But still please persevere. An absolute must-visit place.Kudos to the team behind this herculean effort.
Very informative and moving. A well balanced mixture of information and personal stories as well as objects making the history speak for itself on this important matter. A must when visiting Sarajevo.
The museum is great, thanks for letting me know more about a piece of history that should not be forgotten, and the service of the staff is also very friendly
I was shocked how plastic they showed the crimes against humanity. After the visit i needed some coffee, Baklava and time to think about what I just saw. Nothing for weak nerves.
Its a breathtaking experience with a sad taste after you leave the museum :-( Its unimaginable to see what humans can do to humans. I hope that this museum was not needed at the first place. I could spend hours and hours inside to read each and every text. Ill definitely visit it again next time Im in Sarajevo.
Finally a museum that captures the horror that happened to Bosnia. It is important to remember the atrocities that happened here to remind people of what a war looks like. The stories of the war are told through numerous personal items that were donated to the museum. The receptionist was very friendly and knowledgeable and made the visit even more worth.A visit to remember for life.
Very well organized museum. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. I recommend visiting, because it is important that we remember the horrors of war. Lots of personal items that tell the stories of lives lived and lost in those terrible massacres that happened in the Bosnian war.
Really disturbing but powerful exhibition. A must-see to understand the Bosnian History better! I would advise sensible people to mentally prepare because of the graphic images. 😊
Its an extremely touching exhibition with artefacts from victims and survivors of the war. Theres no audio guide, but there is English captions everywhere, I spent about 1 hour there.
This is the real deal if you want to know about the calamity that happened on Bosnians Muslims. The other venue is just a photo gallery but this one is a museum and has much more detailed information and cheaper entry too. Highly recommended
Amazing and heartbreaking museum about the war ..Small but will organized
Intense and shocking, as it should be! You can understand in depth the horrors Bosnians underwent during the war...
Intensive, shocking and well prepared. Not only collecting of artifacts and documentation. The original diaries from different perspectives, locations and people make the horror of this war to reality. Absolutely worth the time!
Very interesting museum it was small but perfect it showed everything you need to know about the brutal way the civilians Bosnia people lived through the war. It was also very cheap 8 mark for students and 10 if you were not a student and the staff was very helpful and polite. If you like to know something about the Yugoslavian war then you should definitely visit this museum🤩
Not sure how to rate this place. I expected a somewhat historical museum but this one focuses on people stories, not historical facts (there are some but very little and Id say very selective). People stories presented there are of course tragic but then there is very little historical context on what has really happened in Bosnia and why we are even reading about the horrors people went through back then. I was familiar with the history before visiting this place but I can imagine that someone with little historical background on the 92-95 war, wouldnt learn much from a visit there. If youve ever been to Auschwitz or Tuol Sleng, youll be dissappointed with this place.
This museum is a testament to the horrors of the Bosnian war on the population of this country. It elicits the same kind of feelings for me as my visits to Auschwitz and the Genocide museum in Cambodia. There is lots of personal accounts of the suffering together with artifacts and photographs/film taken at that time. There is a room full of post-it notes where you can write your impressions of this place. One interesting thing I discovered was a letter written by Arnold Schwarzenegger to the son of a famous Bosnian bodybuilder paying tripute to his father and giving encouragement for the future.
Amazing museum, eye-opening to those like myself with minimal knowledge of what happened in Sarajevo and the Balkan region. Tickets are 10BAM or 8BAM for students, very much worth every BAM! Note, it’s cash only, they seem to have accepted Euro’s from another group €10 to be exact. I spent 2hours here, but only because I read every single thing in the museum, to give it the time and respect it deserves. I highly recommend this to all tourists, perhaps after having a walking tour of the city to give you a better scope of the history of this country and the tragedy that once was.
a museum shows the awful war that took place in BiH, it is sad and intense, but everyone should visit it to see how this country developed after that war.it is inspiring.God Bless BiH
The museum is very well organised and decorated. It was great fun visiting and learning about the history. All the objects on display have detailed English explanations. There are plenty of pictures/videos to give you the personal touch. The museum tells personal stories of survivors during the war so you will have the first hand experiences. But keep in mind that it may be subjective and only shows one side of the story.
A very sad sad and shocking experience. The level of evilness, just like that committed by the Nazis was horrific and beyond comprehension. How this was allowed to happen as recently as the 1990s is beyond belief. This museum captures every little shocking detail.I would not recommend bringing children here as there are many images of dead, decomposed , burnt and mutilated bodies, although when I was visiting, there were some small kids there too.Just like Auschwitz, I think this is a place every adult should visit. We should never forget these atrocities.
The Best of the 3 Museums we went to about the war but also the most depressing. This is a very informative display but it really shows the dark side of the conflict. This is not a place for children unless they are old enough to understand the true horrors of war as some of the exhibits and artifacts are very graphic
Depressing, shocking and appalling = what it is meant to be. I felt sick after leaving, rightfully so. I recommend this museum to historians, and those who simply want to learn about BH’s dark recent history.
